Flat spin wave dispersion in a triangular antiferromagnet

The excitation spectrum of a S=1/2 2D triangular quantum antiferromagnet is studied using 1/S expansion. Due to the non-collinearity of the classical ground state significant and non-trivial corrections to the spin wave spectrum appear already in the first order in 1/S in contrast to the square lattice antiferromagnet. The resulting magnon dispersion is almost flat in a substantial portion of the Brillouin zone. Our results are in quantitative agreement with recent series expansion studies by Zheng, Fjaerestad, Singh, McKenzie, and Coldea [PRL 96, 057201 (2006) and cond-mat/0608008].

Anisotropic pyrochlores and the global phase diagram of the checkerboard antiferromagnet

We study the phase diagram of two models of spin-1/2 antiferromagnets composed of corner-sharing tetrahedra, the basis of the pyrochlore structure. Primarily, we focus on the Heisenberg antiferromaget on the checkerboard lattice (also called the planar pyrochlore and crossed-chains model). This model has an anisotropic limit, when the dimensionless ratio of two exchange constants, J_\times/J << 1, in which it consists of one-dimensional spin chains coupled weakly together in a frustrated fashion. Using recently developed techniques combining renormalization group ideas and one-dimensional bosonization and current algebra methods, we show that in this limit the model enters a crossed dimer state with two-fold spontaneous symmetry breaking but no magnetic order. We complement this result by an approximate ``quadrumer triplet boson'' calculation, which qualitatively captures the physics of the ``plaquette valence bond solid'' state believed to obtain for J_\times/J = 1. Using these known points in parameter space, the instabilities pointed to by the quadrumer boson calculation, and the simple limit J_\times/J >> 1, we construct a few candidate global phase diagrams for the model, and discuss the nature of the quantum phase transitions contained therein. Finally, we apply our quasi-one-dimensional techniques to an anisotropic limit of the three-dimensional pyrochlore antiferromagnet, an approximate model for magnetism in GeCu2O4. A crossed dimer state is predicted here as well.

Dimerized phase and transitions in a spatially anisotropic square lattice antiferromagnet

We investigate the spatially anisotropic square lattice quantum antiferromagnet. The model describes isotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg chains (exchange constant J) coupled antiferromagnetically in the transverse (J_\perp) and diagonal (J_\times), with respect to the chain, directions. Classically, the model admits two ordered ground states -- with antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic inter-chain spin correlations -- separated by a first order phase transition at J_\perp=2J_\times. We show that in the quantum model this transition splits into two, revealing an intermediate quantum-disordered columnar dimer phase, both in two dimensions and in a simpler two-leg ladder version. We describe quantum-critical points separating this spontaneously dimerized phase from classical ones.

Spinons in a Crossed-Chains Model of a 2D Spin Liquid

Using Random Phase Approximation, we show that a crossed-chains model of a spin-1/2 Heisenberg spins, with frustrated interchain couplings, has a non-dimerized spin-liquid ground state in 2D, with deconfined spinons as the elementary excitations. The results are confirmed by a bosonization study, which shows that the system is an example of a `sliding Luttinger liquid'. In an external field, the system develops an incommensurate field-induced long range order with a finite transition temperature.

Comment on "Critical spin dynamics of the 2D quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnets: Sr2CuO2Cl2 and Sr2Cu3O4Cl2"

We compare the neutron measurements of Kim et al. (cond-mat/0012239) on two-dimensional, S=1/2 antiferromagnets with the continuum quasiclassical theory of S. Sachdev and O.A. Starykh (cond-mat/9904354). The damping of the lowest energy spin excitations is characterized by a dimensionless number whose temperature dependence was predicted to be determined entirely by that of the uniform spin susceptibility. Theory and experiment are consistent with each other.

Thermally fluctuating superconductors in two dimensions

We describe the different regimes of finite temperature dynamics in the vicinity of a zero temperature superconductor to insulator quantum phase transition in two dimensions. New results are obtained for a low temperature phase-only hydrodynamics, and for the intermediate temperature quantum-critical region. In the latter case, we obtain a universal relationship between the frequency-dependence of the conductivity and the value of the d.c. resistance.

On the behavior of a Heisenberg antiferromagnet at very low temperatures

We present an analytical result for the ratio of the physical correlation length in a 2D Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a square lattice, and the one which is actually computed in numerical simulations. This last correlation length is deduced from the second moment of the structure factor at the antiferromagnetic momentum Q. We show that the ratio is very close to one in agreement with previously obtained numerical result of the 1/N expansion.

Conductance of a Mott Quantum Wire

We consider transport through a one-dimensional conductor subject to an external periodic potential and connected to non-interacting leads (a "Mott quantum wire"). For the case of a strong periodic potential, the conductance is shown to jump from zero, for the chemical potential lying within the Mott-Hubbard gap, to the non-interacting value of 2e^2/h, as soon as the chemical potential crosses the gap edge. This behavior is strikingly different from that of an optical conductivity, which varies continuously with the carrier concentration. For the case of a weak potential, the perturbative correction to the conductance due to Umklapp scattering is absent away from half-filling.

Crossover from $O(3)$ to $O(4)$ behavior in weakly frustrated antiferromagnets

We consider an anisotropic version of the $CP^{1}$ model which describes frustrated quantum antiferromagnets with incommensurate spin correlations. We extend the two-component spinon field, describing lattice spins, to the $M$-component complex vector, and show, in the $1/M$ expansion, that for arbitrary small incommensurability longitudinal and transverse stiffnesses tend to the same value as the system approaches the quantum critical point. For physical spins ($M=2$), this yields $O(4)$ critical behavior. However, if the spin structure is commensurate, the longitudinal stiffness is identically zero. In this case, the critical behavior is the same as in $O(3)$ sigma model. We show how the critical exponents interpolate between $O(3)$ and $O(4)$ values near the transition. We also show that the competition between these two fixed points leads to a confinement-deconfinement transition at a finite temperature.

Hole motion in the Ising antiferromagnet: an application of the recursion method

We study hole motion in the Ising antiferromagnet using the recursion method. Using the retraceable path approximation we find the hole's Green's function as well as its wavefunction for arbitrary values of $t/J_z$. The effect of small transverse interaction also is taken into account. Our results provide some additional insight into the self-consistent Born approximation.

Self-consistent Born approximation for the hole motion in the three-band model: a comparison with photoemission experiments

The dispersion relation of the single hole in the $CuO_2$ plane is calculated in the self-consistent Born approximation for the three-band Hamiltonian. We find that direct oxygen-oxygen hopping removes the strong anisotropy of the hole spectrum around the band minima. Our results compare well with recent photoemission measurements of the single-hole dispersion relation in $Sr_2 CuO_2 Cl_2$.

On the confinement of spinons in the $CP^{M-1}$ model

We use the $1/M$ expansion for the $CP^{M-1}$ model to study the long-distance behaviour of the staggered spin susceptibility in the commensurate, two-dimensional quantum antiferromagnet at finite temperature. At $M=\infty$ this model possesses deconfined spin-1/2 bosonic spinons (Schwinger bosons), and the susceptibility has a branch cut along the imaginary $k$ axis. We show that in all three scaling regimes at finite $T$, the interaction between spinons and gauge field fluctuations leads to divergent $1/M$ corrections near the branch cut. We identify the most divergent corrections to the susceptibility at each order in $1/M$ and explicitly show that the full static staggered susceptibility has a number of simple poles rather than a branch cut. We compare our results with the $1/N$ expansion for the $O(N)$ sigma-model.
