Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya domain walls in magnetic nanotubes

We present an analytic study of domain-wall statics and dynamics in ferromagnetic nanotubes with spin-orbit-induced Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). Even at the level of statics, dramatic effects arise from the interplay of space curvature and DMI: the domains become chirally twisted leading to more compact domain walls. The dynamics of these chiral structures exhibits several interesting features. Under weak applied currents, they propagate without distortion. The dynamical response is further enriched by the application of an external magnetic field: the domain wall velocity becomes chirality-dependent and can be significantly increased by varying the DMI. These characteristics allow for enhanced control of domain wall motion in nanotubes with DMI, increasing their potential as information carriers in future logic and storage devices.

Stability of skyrmion lattices and symmetries of quasi-two-dimensional chiral magnets

Recently, there has been substantial interest in realizations of skyrmions, in particular in 2D systems due to increased stability resulting from reduced dimensionality. A stable skyrmion, representing the smallest realizable magnetic texture, could be an ideal element for ultra-dense magnetic memories. Here, we use the most general form of the 2D free energy with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions constructed from general symmetry considerations reflecting the underlying system. We predict that skyrmion phase is robust and it is present even when the system lacks the in-plane rotational symmetry. In fact, the lowered symmetry leads to increased stability of vortex-antivortex lattices with four-fold symmetry and in-plane spirals, in some instances even in the absence of an external magnetic field. Our results relate different hexagonal and square cell phases to the symmetries of materials used for realizations of skyrmions. This will give clear directions for experimental realizations of hexagonal and square cell phases, and will allow engineering of skyrmions with unusual properties. We also predict striking differences in gyro-dynamics induced by spin currents for isolated skyrmions and for crystals where spin currents can be induced by charge carriers or by thermal magnons. We find that under certain conditions, isolated skyrmions can move along the current without a side motion which can have implications for realizations of magnetic memories.

Spin Seebeck Power Conversion

Spin caloritronics is the science and technology to control spin, charge, and heat currents in magnetic nanostructures. The spin degree of freedom provides new strategies for thermolelectric power generation that have not yet been fully explored. After an elementary introduction into conventional thermoelectrics and spintronics, we give a brief review of the physics of spin caloritronics. We discuss spin-dependent thermoelectrics based on the the two-current model in metallic magnets as well as the spin Seebeck and Peltier effects that are based on spin wave excitations in ferromagnets. We derive expressions for the efficiency and figure of merit ZT of several spin caloritronic devices.

Spin resonance in Luttinger liquid with spin-orbit interaction

Spin-orbit interaction in quantum wires leads to a spin resonance at low temperatures, even in the absence of an external dc magnetic field. We study the effect of electron-electron interaction on the resonance. This interaction is strong in quantum wires. We show that the electron-electron interaction changes the shape of the resonance curve and produces an additional cusp at the plasmon frequency. However, except for very strong electron-electron interaction these changes are weak since this interaction by itself does not break the spin-rotation symmetry that is violated weakly by the spin-orbit interaction and external magnetic field.

Electric signature of magnetic domain-wall dynamics

We study current-induced domain-wall dynamics in a thin ferromagnetic nanowire. The domain-wall dynamics is described by simple equations with four parameters. We propose the procedure to determine these parameters by all-electric measurements of the time-dependent voltage induced by the domain-wall motion. We provide an analytical expression for the time variation of this voltage. Furthermore, we show that the measurement of the proposed effects is within reach with current experimental techniques.

Holey topological thermoelectrics

We study the thermoelectric properties of three-dimensional topological insulators with many holes (or pores) in the bulk. We show that at high density of these holes the thermoelectric figure of merit ZT can be large due to the contribution of the conducting surfaces and the suppressed phonon thermal conductivity. The maximum efficiency can be tuned by an induced gap in the surface states dispersion through tunneling or external magnetic fields. The large values of ZT, much higher than unity for reasonable parameters, make this system a strong candidate for applications in heat management of nanodevices, especially at low temperatures.

Power optimization for domain wall motion in ferromagnetic nanowires

The current mediated domain-wall dynamics in a thin ferromagnetic wire is investigated. We derive the effective equations of motion of the domain wall. They are used to study the possibility to optimize the power supplied by electric current for the motion of domain walls in a nanowire. We show that a certain resonant time-dependent current moving a domain wall can significantly reduce the Joule heating in the wire, and thus it can lead to a novel proposal for the most energy efficient memory devices. We discuss how Gilbert damping, non-adiabatic spin transfer torque, and the presence of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction can effect this power optimization.

Large thermoelectric figure of merit for 3D topological Anderson insulators via line dislocation engineering

We study the thermoelectric properties of three-dimensional topological Anderson insulators with line dislocations. We show that at high densities of dislocations the thermoelectric figure of merit ZT can be dominated by one-dimensional topologically-protected conducting states channeled through the lattice screw dislocations in the topological insulator materials with a non-zero time-reversal-invariant momentum such as Bi_{1-x}Sb_x. When the chemical potential does not exceed much the mobility edge the ZT at room temperatures can reach large values, much higher than unity for reasonable parameters, hence making this system a strong candidate for applications in heat management of nano-devices.

Minimization of Ohmic losses for domain wall motion in a ferromagnetic nanowire

We study current-induced domain-wall motion in a narrow ferromagnetic wire. We propose a way to move domain walls with a resonant time-dependent current which dramatically decreases the Ohmic losses in the wire and allows to drive the domain wall with higher speed without burning the wire. For any domain wall velocity we find the time-dependence of the current needed to minimize the Ohmic losses. Below a critical domain-wall velocity specified by the parameters of the wire the minimal Ohmic losses are achieved by dc current. Furthermore, we identify the wire parameters for which the losses reduction from its dc value is the most dramatic.

AC- and DC-driven noise and I-V characteristics of magnetic nanostructures

We study a structure consisting of a ferromagnetic (F) layer coupled to two normal metal (N) leads. The system is driven out of equilibrium by the simultaneous application of external dc and ac voltages across the N/F/N structure. Using the Keldysh diagrammatic approach, and modeling the ferromagnet as a classical spin of size S >> 1, we derive the Langevin equation for the magnetization dynamics and calculate the noise correlator. We find that the noise has an explicit frequency dependence in addition to depending on the characteristics of the ac and dc drive. Further, we calculate the current-voltage characteristics of the structure to O(1/S^2) and find that the nonequilibrium dynamics of the ferromagnetic layer gives rise to corrections to the current that are both linear and nonlinear in voltage.

Current driven magnetization dynamics in ferromagnetic nanowires with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction

We study current induced magnetization dynamics in a long thin ferromagnetic wire with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). We find a spiral domain wall configuration of the magnetization and obtain an analytical expression for the width of the domain wall as a function of the interaction strengths. Our findings show that above a certain value of DMI a domain wall configuration cannot exist in the wire. Below this value we determine the domain wall dynamics for small currents, and calculate the drift velocity of the domain wall along the wire. We show that the DMI suppresses the minimum value of current required to move the domain wall. Depending on its sign, the DMI increases or decreases the domain wall drift velocity.
