ExoMol line lists -- LIII: Empirical Rovibronic spectra of Yttrium Oxide (YO)

Empirical line lists for the open shell molecule $^{89}$Y$^{16}$O (yttrium oxide) and its isotopologues are presented. The line lists cover the 6 lowest electronic states: $X {}^{2}Σ^{+}$, $A {}^{2}Π$, $A' {}^{2}Δ$, $B {}^{2}Σ^{+}$, $C {}^{2}Π$ and $D {}^{2}Σ^{+}$ up to 60000 cm$^{-1}$ ($<0.167$ $μ$m) for rotational excitation up to $J = 400.5$. An \textit{ab initio} spectroscopic model consisting of potential energy curves (PECs), spin-orbit and electronic angular momentum couplings is refined by fitting to experimentally determined energies of YO, derived from published YO experimental transition frequency data. The model is complemented by empirical spin-rotation and $Λ$-doubling curves and \textit{ab initio} dipole moment and transition dipole moment curves computed using MRCI. The \textit{ab initio} PECs computed using the complete basis set limit extrapolation and the CCSD(T) method with its higher quality provide an excellent initial approximation for the refinement. Non-adiabatic coupling curves for two pairs of states of the same symmetry $A$/$C$ and $B$/$D$ are computed using a state-averaged CASSCF and used to built diabatic representations for the $A {}^{2}Π$, $C {}^{2}Π$, $B {}^{2}Σ^{+}$ and $D {}^{2}Σ^{+}$ curves. Calculated lifetimes of YO are tuned to agree well with the experiment, where available. The BRYTS YO line lists for are included into the ExoMol data base (www.exomol.com).

Sensitivity of the thermodynamics of two-dimensional systems towards the topological classes of their surfaces

Using Monte Carlo simulations we study the two-dimensional Ising model on triangular, square, and hexagonal lattices with various topologies. We focus on the behavior of the magnetic susceptibility and of the specific heat near the critical point of the planar bulk system. We find that scaling functions of these quantities on the spherical surface (Euler characteristic K = 2) differ from the scaling functions on the projective plane (K = 1) which, in turn, differ from the scaling functions on the torus and on the Klein bottle (both K = 0). This provides strong evidence that phase transitions of the Ising model on two-dimensional surfaces depend on their topologies.

Bridging transitions and capillary forces for colloids in a slit

Capillary bridges can form between colloids immersed in a two phase fluid, e.g., in a binary liquid mixture, if the surface of the colloids prefers the species other than the one favored in the bulk liquid. Here, we study the formation of liquid bridges induced by confining colloids to a slit, with the slit walls having a preference opposite to the one of the colloid surface. Using mean field theory, we show that there is a line of first-order phase transitions between the bridge and the no-bridge states, which ends at a critical point. By decreasing the slit width, this critical point is shifted towards smaller separations between the colloids. However, at very small separations, and far from criticality, we observe only a minor influence of the slit width on the location of the transition. Monte Carlo simulations of the Ising model, which mimics incompressible binary liquid mixtures, confirm the occurrence of the bridging transitions, as manifested by the appearance of bistable regions where both the bridge and the no-bridge configurations are (meta)stable. Interestingly, we find no bistability in the case of small colloids, but we observe a sharpening of the transition when the colloid size increases. In addition, we demonstrate that the capillary force acting between the colloids can depend sensitively on the slit width, and varies drastically with temperature, thus achieving strengths orders of magnitude higher than at criticality of the fluid.

Probing interface localization-delocalization transitions by colloids

Interface localization-delocalization transitions (ILDT) occur in two-phase fluids confined in a slit with competing preferences of the walls for the two fluid phases. At low temperatures the interface between the two phases is localized at one of the walls. Upon increasing temperature it unbinds. Although intensively studied theoretically and computationally, such transitions have not yet been observed experimentally due to severe challenges in resolving fine details of the fluid structure. Here, using mean field theory and Monte Carlo simulations of the Ising model, we propose to detect these ILDT by using colloids. We show that the finite-size and fluctuation induced force acting on a colloid confined in such a system experiences a vivid change if, upon lowering the temperature, the interface localizes at one of the walls. This change can serve as a more easily accessible experimental indicator of the transition.

Critical Casimir Interactions and Percolation: the quantitative description of critical fluctuations

Casimir forces in a critical media are produced by spatial suppression of order parameter fluctuations. In this paper we address the question how fluctuations of a critical media relates the magnitude of critical Casimir interactions. Namely, for the Ising model we express the potential of critical Casimir interactions in terms of Fortuin-Kasteleyn site-bond correlated percolation clusters. These clusters are quantitative representation of fluctuations in the media. New Monte Carlo method for the computation of the Casimir force potential which is based on this relation is proposed. We verify this method by computation of Casimir interactions between two disks for 2D Ising model. The new method is also applied to the investigation of non-additivity of the critical Casimir potential. The non-additive contribution to three-particles interaction is computed as a function of the temperature.

Chromatic patchy particles: effects of specific interactions on liquid structure

We study the structural and thermodynamic properties of patchy particle liquids, with a special focus on the role of "color", i.e. specific interactions between individual patches. A possible experimental realization of such "chromatic" interactions is by decorating the particle patches with single-stranded DNA linkers. The complementarity of the linkers can promote selective bond formation between predetermined pairs of patches. By using MD simulations, we compare the local connectivity, the bond orientation order, and other structural properties of the aggregates formed by the "colored" and "colorless" systems. The analysis is done for spherical particles with two different patch arrangements (tetrahedral and cubic). It is found that the aggregated (liquid) phase of the "colorless" patchy particles is better connected, denser and typically has stronger local order than the corresponding "colored" one. This, in turn, makes the colored liquid less stable thermodynamically. Specifically, we predict that in a typical case the chromatic interactions should increase the relative stability of the crystalline phase with respect to the disordered liquid, thus expanding its region in the phase diagram.

Critical Casimir Interactions Between Spherical Particles in the Presence of the Bulk Ordering Fields

The spatial suppression of order parameter fluctuations in a critical media produces Critical Casimir forces acting on confining surfaces. This scenario is realized in a critical binary mixture near the demixing transition point that corresponds to the second order phase transition of the Ising universality class. Due to these critical interactions similar colloids, immersed in a critical binary mixture near the consolute point, exhibit attraction. The numerical method for computation of the interaction potential between two spherical particles using Monte Carlo simulations for the Ising model is proposed. This method is based on the integration of the local magnetization over the applied local magnetic field. For the stronger interaction the concentration of the component of the mixture that does not wet colloidal particles, should be larger, than the critical concentration. The strongest amplitude of the interactions is observed below the critical point.

Precursors of order in aggregates of patchy particles

We study computationally the local structure of aggregated systems of patchy particles. By calculating the probability distribution functions of various rotational invariants we can identify the precursors of orientation order in amorphous phase. Surprisingly, the strongest signature of local order is observed for 4-patch particles with tetrahedral symmetry, not for 6-patch particles with the cubic one. This trend is exactly opposite to their known ability to crystallize. We relate this anomaly to the observation that a generic aggregate of patchy systems has coordination number close to 4. Our results also suggest a significant correlation between rotational order in the studied liquids with the corresponding crystalline phases, making this approach potentially useful for a broader range of patchy systems.

The Tails of the Crossing Probability

The scaling of the tails of the probability of a system to percolate only in the horizontal direction $π_{hs}$ was investigated numerically for correlated site-bond percolation model for $q=1,2,3,4$.We have to demonstrate that the tails of the crossing probability far from the critical point have shape $π_{hs}(p) \simeq D \exp(c L[p-p_{c}]^ν)$ where $ν$ is the correlation length index, $p=1-\exp(-β)$ is the probability of a bond to be closed. At criticality we observe crossover to another scaling $π_{hs}(p) \simeq A \exp (-b {L [p-p_{c}]^ν}^{z})$. Here $z$ is a scaling index describing the central part of the crossing probability.

The critical amplitude ratio of the susceptibility in the random-site two-dimensional Ising model

We present a new way of probing the universality class of the site-diluted two-dimensional Ising model. We analyse Monte Carlo data for the magnetic susceptibility, introducing a new fitting procedure in the critical region applicable even for a single sample with quenched disorder. This gives us the possibility to fit simultaneously the critical exponent, the critical amplitude and the sample dependent pseudo-critical temperature. The critical amplitude ratio of the magnetic susceptibility is seen to be independent of the concentration $q$ of the empty sites for all investigated values of $q\le 0.25$. At the same time the average effective exponent $γ_{eff}$ is found to vary with the concentration $q$, which may be argued to be due to logarithmic corrections to the power law of the pure system. This corrections are canceled in the susceptibility amplitude ratio as predicted by theory. The central charge of the corresponding field theory was computed and compared well with the theoretical predictions.

Number of bonds in the site-diluted lattices: sampling and fluctuations

We have calculated analytically the mean value and the variance of the number of bonds on the lattices of dimension $d$ for the given occupation of sites. We consider both kinds of site occupation: with the fixed concentration $n_s$ of occupied sites and with the probability $p$ for a site to be occupied. We found that the variance are smaller in the former case and not depends from the dimensionality of the hypercubic lattice. Whereas in the last case it grows with the space dimensionality. The ratio of variances are quite different in the limit of $p\to 1$. Finally, we demonstrate the relevance of the level of fluctuations on the precision of energy calculations for the Ising model in the Monte Carlo simulations.
