Uniqueness for stochastic differential equations in Hilbert spaces with irregular drift

We present a versatile framework to study strong existence and uniqueness for stochastic differential equations (SDEs) in Hilbert spaces with irregular drift. We consider an SDE in a separable Hilbert space $H$ \begin{equation*} dX_t= (A X_t + b(X_t))dt +(-A)^{-\gamma/2}dW_t,\quad X_0=x_0 \in H, \end{equation*} where $A$ is a self-adjoint negative definite operator with purely atomic spectrum, $W$ is a cylindrical Wiener process, $b$ is $\alpha$-H\"older continuous function $H\to H$, and a nonnegative parameter $\gamma$ such that the stochastic convolution takes values in $H$. We show that this equation has a unique strong solution provided that $\alpha > \alpha^*(\gamma)$, with an explicit function $\alpha^*$ that takes values in $(0,1)$ for all $\gamma\in[0,3)$. This substantially extends the seminal work of Da Prato and Flandoli (2010) as no structural assumption on $b$ is imposed. The range of admissible $\alpha$ is also extended. To obtain this result, we do not use infinite-dimensional Kolmogorov equations but instead develop a new technique combining L\^e's theory of stochastic sewing in Hilbert spaces, Gaussian analysis, and a method of Lasry and Lions for approximation in Hilbert spaces.

Lectures on stochastic sewing with applications

These are lecture notes for a mini-course on stochastic sewing, taught at the University of Edinburgh and Beijing Institute of Technology in Spring/Summer 2025. The aim is to introduce the reader to stochastic sewing techniques and to show how they can be successfully applied to study various problems in stochastic analysis, including: regularization by noise for stochastic differential equations driven by Brownian motion or fractional Brownian motion, well-posedness of stochastic PDEs with irregular drift, the study of averaging operators and local times, and the analysis of numerical algorithms.

Analytically weak and mild solutions to stochastic heat equation with irregular drift

Consider the stochastic heat equation \begin{equation*} \partial_t u_t(x)=\frac12 \partial^2_{xx}u_t(x) +b(u_t(x))+\dot{W}_{t}(x),\quad t\in(0,T],\, x\in D, \end{equation*} where $b$ is a generalized function, $D$ is either $[0,1]$ or $\mathbb{R}$, and $\dot W$ is space-time white noise on $\mathbb{R}_+\times D$. If the drift $b$ is a sufficiently regular function, then it is well-known that any analytically weak solution to this equation is also analytically mild, and vice versa. We extend this result to drifts that are generalized functions, with an appropriate adaptation of the notions of mild and weak solutions. As a corollary of our results, we show that for $b\in L_p(\mathbb{R})$, $p\ge1$, this equation has a unique analytically weak and mild solution, thus extending the classical results of Gy\"ongy and Pardoux (1993).

Weak uniqueness for singular stochastic equations

We put forward a new method for proving weak uniqueness of stochastic equations with singular drifts driven by a non-Markov or infinite-dimensional noise. We apply our method to study stochastic heat equation (SHE) driven by Gaussian space-time white noise $$ \frac{\partial}{\partial t} u_t(x)=\frac12 \frac{\partial^2}{\partial x^2}u_t(x)+b(u_t(x))+\dot{W}_{t}(x), \quad t>0,\, x\in D\subset\mathbb{R}, $$ and multidimensional stochastic differential equation (SDE) driven by fractional Brownian motion with the Hurst index $H\in(0,1/2)$ $$ d X_t=b(X_t) dt +d B_t^H,\quad t>0. $$ In both cases $b$ is a generalized function in the Besov space $\mathcal{B}^\alpha_{\infty,\infty}$, $\alpha<0$. Well-known pathwise uniqueness results for these equations do not cover the entire range of the parameter $\alpha$, for which weak existence holds. What happens in the range where weak existence holds but pathwise uniqueness is unknown has been an open problem. We settle this problem and show that for SHE weak uniqueness holds for $\alpha>-3/2$, and for SDE it holds for $\alpha>1/2-1/(2H)$; thus, in both cases, it holds in the entire desired range of values of $\alpha$. This extends seminal results of Catellier and Gubinelli (2016) and Gy\"ongy and Pardoux (1993) to the weak well-posedness setting. To establish these results, we develop a new strategy, combining ideas from ergodic theory (generalized couplings of Hairer-Mattingly-Kulik-Scheutzow) with stochastic sewing of L\^e.

Weak existence for SDEs with singular drifts and fractional Brownian or Levy noise beyond the subcritical regime

We study a multidimensional stochastic differential equation with additive noise: \[ d X_t=b(t, X_t) dt +d \xi_t, \] where the drift $b$ is integrable in space and time, and $\xi$ is either a fractional Brownian motion or a L\'evy process. We show weak existence of solutions to this equation under the optimal condition on integrability indices of $b$, going beyond the subcritical Krylov--R\"ockner (Prodi--Serrin--Ladyzhenskaya) regime. This extends the recent results of Krylov (2020) to the fractional Brownian and L\'evy cases. We also construct a counterexample to demonstrate the optimality of this condition. In the one-dimensional case, we show the existence of a strong solution under the same condition. Our methods are built upon a version of the stochastic sewing lemma of L\^e and the John--Nirenberg inequality.

Stochastic equations with singular drift driven by fractional Brownian motion

We consider stochastic differential equation $$ d X_t=b(X_t) dt +d W_t^H, $$ where the drift $b$ is either a measure or an integrable function, and $W^H$ is a $d$-dimensional fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter $H\in(0,1)$, $d\in\mathbb{N}$. For the case where $b\in L_p(\mathbb{R}^d)$, $p\in[1,\infty]$ we show weak existence of solutions to this equation under the condition $$ \frac{d}p<\frac1H-1, $$ which is an extension of the Krylov-R\"ockner condition (2005) to the fractional case. We construct a counter-example showing optimality of this condition. If $b$ is a Radon measure, particularly the delta measure, we prove weak existence of solutions to this equation under the optimal condition $H<\frac1{d+1}$. We also show strong well-posedness of solutions to this equation under certain conditions. To establish these results, we utilize the stochastic sewing technique and develop a new version of the stochastic sewing lemma.

Strong rate of convergence of the Euler scheme for SDEs with irregular drift driven by Levy noise

We study the strong rate of convergence of the Euler--Maruyama scheme for a multidimensional stochastic differential equation (SDE) $$ dX_t = b(X_t) \, dt + dL_t, $$ with irregular $\beta$-H\"older drift, $\beta > 0$, driven by a L\'evy process with exponent $\alpha \in (0, 2]$. For $\alpha \in [2/3, 2]$, we obtain strong $L_p$ and almost sure convergence rates in the entire range $\beta > 1 - \alpha/2$, where the SDE is known to be strongly well-posed. This significantly improves the current state of the art, both in terms of convergence rate and the range of $\alpha$. Notably, the obtained convergence rate does not depend on $p$, which is a novelty even in the case of smooth drifts. As a corollary of the obtained moment-independent error rate, we show that the Euler--Maruyama scheme for such SDEs converges almost surely and obtain an explicit convergence rate. Additionally, as a byproduct of our results, we derive strong $L_p$ convergence rates for approximations of nonsmooth additive functionals of a L\'evy process. Our technique is based on a new extension of stochastic sewing arguments and L\^e's quantitative John-Nirenberg inequality.

A Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Space approach to singular local stochastic volatility McKean-Vlasov models

Motivated by the challenges related to the calibration of financial models, we consider the problem of numerically solving a singular McKean-Vlasov equation $$ d X_t= \sigma(t,X_t) X_t \frac{\sqrt v_t}{\sqrt {E[v_t|X_t]}}dW_t, $$ where $W$ is a Brownian motion and $v$ is an adapted diffusion process. This equation can be considered as a singular local stochastic volatility model. Whilst such models are quite popular among practitioners, unfortunately, its well-posedness has not been fully understood yet and, in general, is possibly not guaranteed at all. We develop a novel regularization approach based on the reproducing kernel Hilbert space (RKHS) technique and show that the regularized model is well-posed. Furthermore, we prove propagation of chaos. We demonstrate numerically that a thus regularized model is able to perfectly replicate option prices due to typical local volatility models. Our results are also applicable to more general McKean--Vlasov equations.

Well-posedness of stochastic heat equation with distributional drift and skew stochastic heat equation

We study stochastic reaction--diffusion equation $$ \partial_tu_t(x)=\frac12 \partial^2_{xx}u_t(x)+b(u_t(x))+\dot{W}_{t}(x), \quad t>0,\, x\in D $$ where $b$ is a generalized function in the Besov space $\mathcal{B}^β_{q,\infty}({\mathbb R})$, $D\subset{\mathbb R}$ and $\dot W$ is a space-time white noise on ${\mathbb R}_+\times D$. We introduce a notion of a solution to this equation and obtain existence and uniqueness of a strong solution whenever $β-1/q\ge-1$, $β>-1$ and $q\in[1,\infty]$. This class includes equations with $b$ being measures, in particular, $b=δ_0$ which corresponds to the skewed stochastic heat equation. For $β-1/q > -3/2$, we obtain existence of a weak solution. Our results extend the work of Bass and Chen (2001) to the framework of stochastic partial differential equations and generalizes the results of Gyöngy and Pardoux (1993) to distributional drifts. To establish these results, we exploit the regularization effect of the white noise through a new strategy based on the stochastic sewing lemma introduced in Lê~(2020).

Law of the SLE tip

We analyze the law of the SLE tip at a fixed time in capacity parametrization. We describe it as the stationary law of a suitable diffusion process, and show that it has a density which is a unique solution of a certain PDE. Moreover, we identify the phases in which the even negative moments of the imaginary value are finite. For the negative second and negative fourth moments we provide closed-form expressions.

Optimal rate of convergence for approximations of SPDEs with non-regular drift

A fully discrete finite difference scheme for stochastic reaction-diffusion equations driven by a $1+1$-dimensional white noise is studied. The optimal strong rate of convergence is proved without posing any regularity assumption on the non-linear reaction term. The proof relies on stochastic sewing techniques.

Approximation of SDEs -- a stochastic sewing approach

We give a new take on the error analysis of approximations of stochastic differential equations (SDEs), utilizing and developing the stochastic sewing lemma of Lê (2020). This approach allows one to exploit regularization by noise effects in obtaining convergence rates. In our first application we show convergence (to our knowledge for the first time) of the Euler-Maruyama scheme for SDEs driven by fractional Brownian motions with non-regular drift. When the Hurst parameter is $H\in(0,1)$ and the drift is $\mathcal{C}^α$, $α\in[0,1]$ and $α>1-1/(2H)$, we show the strong $L_p$ and almost sure rates of convergence to be $((1/2+αH)\wedge 1) -\varepsilon$, for any $\varepsilon>0$. Our conditions on the regularity of the drift are optimal in the sense that they coincide with the conditions needed for the strong uniqueness of solutions from Catellier, Gubinelli (2016). In a second application we consider the approximation of SDEs driven by multiplicative standard Brownian noise where we derive the almost optimal rate of convergence $1/2-\varepsilon$ of the Euler-Maruyama scheme for $\mathcal{C}^α$ drift, for any $\varepsilon,α>0$.

Couplings via comparison principle and exponential ergodicity of SPDEs in the hypoelliptic setting

We develop a general framework for studying ergodicity of order-preserving Markov semigroups. We establish natural and in a certain sense optimal conditions for existence and uniqueness of the invariant measure and exponential convergence of transition probabilities of an order-preserving Markov process. As an application, we show exponential ergodicity and exponentially fast synchronization-by-noise of the stochastic reaction-diffusion equation in the hypoelliptic setting. This refines and complements corresponding results of Hairer, Mattingly (2011).

Asymptotic strong Feller property and local weak irreducibility via generalized couplings

In this short note we show how the asymptotic strong Feller property (ASF) and local weak irreducibility can be established via generalized couplings. We also prove that a stronger form of ASF together with local weak irreducibility implies uniqueness of an invariant measure. The latter result is optimal in a certain sense and complements some of the corresponding results of Hairer, Mattingly (2008).

Generalized couplings and ergodic rates for SPDEs and other Markov models

We establish verifiable general sufficient conditions for exponential or subexponential ergodicity of Markov processes that may lack the strong Feller property. We apply the obtained results to show exponential ergodicity of a variety of nonlinear stochastic partial differential equations with additive forcing, including 2D stochastic Navier-Stokes equations. Our main tool is a new version of the generalized coupling method.

Strong existence and uniqueness for stable stochastic differential equations with distributional drift

We consider the stochastic differential equation $$ dX_t = b(X_t) dt + dL_t,$$ where the drift $b$ is a generalized function and $L$ is a symmetric one dimensional $α$-stable Lévy processes, $α\in (1, 2)$. We define the notion of solution to this equation and establish strong existence and uniqueness whenever $b$ belongs to the Besov--Hölder space $\mathcal{C}^β$ for $β>1/2-α/2$.

Invariant measures for stochastic functional differential equations

We establish new general sufficient conditions for the existence of an invariant measure for stochastic functional differential equations and for exponential or subexponential convergence to the equilibrium. The obtained conditions extend Veretennikov--Khasminskii conditions for SDEs and are optimal in a certain sense.

Regularization by noise and flows of solutions for a stochastic heat equation

Motivated by the regularization by noise phenomenon for SDEs we prove existence and uniqueness of the flow of solutions for the non-Lipschitz stochastic heat equation $$\frac{\partial u}{\partial t}=\frac12\frac{\partial^2 u}{\partial z^2} + b(u(t,z)) + \dot{W}(t,z), $$ where $\dot W$ is a space-time white noise on $\mathbb{R}_+\times\mathbb{R}$ and $b$ is a bounded measurable function on $\mathbb{R}$. As a byproduct of our proof we also establish the so-called path--by--path uniqueness for any initial condition in a certain class on the same set of probability one. This extends recent results of Davie (2007) to the context of stochastic partial differential equations.
