PHANGS-JWST First Results: Dust embedded star clusters in NGC 7496 selected via 3.3 $μ$m PAH emission

The earliest stages of star formation occur enshrouded in dust and are not observable in the optical. Here we leverage the extraordinary new high-resolution infrared imaging from JWST to begin the study of dust-embedded star clusters in nearby galaxies throughout the local volume. We present a technique for identifying dust-embedded clusters in NGC 7496 (18.7 Mpc), the first galaxy to be observed by the PHANGS-JWST Cycle 1 Treasury Survey. We select sources that have strong 3.3$μ$m PAH emission based on a $\rm F300M-F335M$ color excess, and identify 67 candidate embedded clusters. Only eight of these are found in the PHANGS-HST optically-selected cluster catalog and all are young (six have SED-fit ages of $\sim1$ Myr). We find that this sample of embedded cluster candidates may significantly increase the census of young clusters in NGC 7496 from the PHANGS-HST catalog -- the number of clusters younger than $\sim$2 Myr could be increased by a factor of two. Candidates are preferentially located in dust lanes, and are coincident with peaks in PHANGS-ALMA CO (2-1) maps. We take a first look at concentration indices, luminosity functions, SEDs spanning from 2700A to 21$μ$m, and stellar masses (estimated to be between $\sim10^4-10^5 M_{\odot}$). The methods tested here provide a basis for future work to derive accurate constraints on the physical properties of embedded clusters, characterize the completeness of cluster samples, and expand analysis to all 19 galaxies in the PHANGS-JWST sample, which will enable basic unsolved problems in star formation and cluster evolution to be addressed.

The PHANGS-MUSE survey -- Probing the chemo-dynamical evolution of disc galaxies

We present the PHANGS-MUSE survey, a programme using the MUSE IFS at the ESO VLT to map 19 massive $(9.4 < \log(M_{*}/M_\odot) < 11.0)$ nearby (D < 20 Mpc) star-forming disc galaxies. The survey consists of 168 MUSE pointings (1'x1' each), a total of nearly 15 Million spectra, covering ~1.5 Million independent spectra. PHANGS-MUSE provides the first IFS view of star formation across different local environments (including galaxy centres, bars, spiral arms) in external galaxies at a median resolution of 50~pc, better than the mean inter-cloud distance in the ionised interstellar medium. This `cloud-scale' resolution allows detailed demographics and characterisations of HII regions and other ionised nebulae. PHANGS-MUSE further delivers a unique view on the associated gas and stellar kinematics, and provides constraints on the star formation history. The PHANGS-MUSE survey is complemented by dedicated ALMA CO(2-1) and multi-band HST observations, therefore allowing us to probe the key stages of the star formation process from molecular clouds to HII regions and star clusters. This paper describes the scientific motivation, sample selection, observational strategy, data reduction and analysis process of the PHANGS-MUSE survey. We present our bespoke automated data-reduction framework, which is built on the reduction recipes provided by ESO, but additionally allows for mosaicking and homogenisation of the point spread function. We further present a detailed quality assessment and a brief illustration of the potential scientific applications of the large set of PHANGS-MUSE data products generated by our data analysis framework. The data cubes and analysis data products described in this paper represent the basis for the first PHANGS-MUSE public data release and are available in the ESO archive and via the Canadian Astronomy Data Centre.

Ozone formation in ternary collisions: Theory and experiment reconciled

Absorbing UV radiation, ozone protects life on Earth and plays a fundamental role in Earth's temperature balance. The formation of ozone occurs through the ternary recombination reaction: O$_2$+O+M $\rightarrow$ O$_3$+M, where M can be N$_2$, O$_2$ or Ar. Here, we developed a theoretical approach capable of modeling the formation of ozone molecules in ternary collisions, and applied it to the reaction with M=Ar because of extensive experimental data available. The rate coefficients for the direct formation of O$_3$ in ternary collisions O+O$_2$+Ar were computed for the first time as a function of collision energy, and thermally-averaged coefficients were derived for temperatures 5-900~K leading to a good agreement with available experimental data for temperatures 100-900~K. The present study shows that the formation of ozone in ternary collisions O+O$_2$+Ar at temperatures below 200~K proceeds through a formation of a temporary complex ArO$_2$, while at temperatures above 1000~K, the reaction proceeds mainly through a formation of long-lived vibrational resonances of O$_3^*$. At intermediate temperatures 200~K-1000~K, the process cannot be viewed as a two-step mechanism. In addition, it is found that the majority of O$_3$ molecules formed initially are weakly bound.

Sites of star formation in the tidal structures

We give a short review of the current results of studying of star formation sites observed beyond the main discs of galaxies in different interacting systems: Arp 270, Arp 194, Arp 305, NGC 4656 and NGC 90. The observations were carried out at the 6-meter telescope BTA in SAO RAS with the SCOPRPIO-2 spectrograph. The properties of star forming islands, their mass, dynamics, chemical abundances, their possible fate and the mechanisms inspiring star formation, appear to be different in different systems.

Topological Floquet interface states in optical fibre loops

We experimentally observe a coexisting pair of topological anomalous Floquet interface states in a (1+1)-dimensional Discrete Photon Walk. We explicitly verify the robustness of these states against local static perturbations respecting chiral symmetry of the system, as well as their vulnerability against non-stationary perturbations. The walk is implemented based on pulses propagating in a pair of coupled fibre loops of dissimilar lengths with dynamically variable mutual coupling. The topological interface is created via phase modulation in one of the loops, which allows for an anomalous Floquet topological transition at the interface.

Activity of (6478) Gault during January 13 - March 28, 2019

We present the results of photometric observations of active asteroid (6478) Gault performed at heliocentric distances from 2.46 to 2.30 au and geocentric distances from 1.79 to 1.42 au between January 15 and March 28, 2019. Observations were carried out at the 2.5-m telescope of SAI MSU (CMO) on January 15, 2019 and at the 1.3-m and 0.61-m telescopes (SPb) on February 6 and March 28, 2019, respectively. The direct images of the asteroid were obtained with the broad-band B, V and R filters. Comet-like structures were detected at all observation dates. Colour maps were built and colour variations along the tail for the observation made on January 15, 2019 were analyzed. The $Afρ$ was calculated for the R filter, The evaluated value varies from 47 to 32 cm for the period from January to the end of March, 2019. The rotational period of the body is estimated from the light curve by different methods and is about 1.79 hr. Possible mechanisms of triggering Gault's activity are discussed.

Wind and nebula of the M33 variable GR290 (WR/LBV)

Context: GR290 (M33/V532=Romano's Star) is a suspected post-LBV star located in M33 galaxy that shows a rare Wolf-Rayet spectrum during its minimum light phase. In spite of many studies, its atmospheric structure, its circumstellar environment and its place in the general context of massive stars evolution is poorly known. Aims: Detailed study of its wind and mass loss, and study of the circumstellar environment associated to the star. Methods: Long-slit spectra of GR290 were obtained during its present minimum luminosity phase with the GTC together with contemporaneous BVRI photometry. The data were compared with non-LTE model atmosphere synthetic spectra computed with CMFGEN and with CLOUDY models for ionized interstellar medium regions. Results: The current $m_V=18.8$ mag, is the faintest at which this source has ever been observed. The non-LTE models indicate effective temperature $T_{eff}$=27-30 kK at radius $R_{2/3}$=27-21 Rsun and mass loss rate $\dot{M}=1.5\times10^{-5}$ Msun yr$^{-1}$. The terminal wind speed $V_\infty$=620 ${\rm km~s^{-1}}$ is faster than ever before recorded while the current luminosity $L_*=(3.1-3.7)\times 10^5$ Lsun is the lowest ever deduced. It is overabundant in He and N and underabundant in C and O. It is surrounded by an unresolved compact HII region with dimensions $\leq$4 pc, from where H-Balmer, HeI lines and [OIII] and [NII] are detected. In addition, we find emission from a more extended interstellar medium (ISM) region which appears to be asymmetric, with a larger extent to the East (16-40 pc) than to the West. Conclusions: In the present long lasting visual minimum, GR290 is in a lower bolometric luminosity state with higher mass loss rate. The nearby nebular emission seems to suggest that the star has undergone significant mass loss over the past $10^4-10^5$ years and is nearing the end stages of its evolution.

Tidal bridge and tidal dwarf candidates in the interacting system Arp194

Arp194 is a system of recently collided galaxies, where the southern galaxy (S) passed through the gaseous disc of the northern galaxy (N) which in turn consists of two close components. This system is of special interest due to the presence of regions of active star-formation in the bridge between galaxies, the brightest of which (the region A) has a size of at least 4 kpc. We obtained three spectral slices of the system for different slit positions at the 6-m telescope of SAO RAS. We estimated the radial distribution of line-of-sight velocity and velocity dispersion as well as the intensities of emission lines and oxygen abundance $12+\log(\mathrm{O/H})$. The gas in the bridge is only partially mixed chemically and spatially: we observe the O/H gradient with the galactocentric distances both from S and N galaxies and a high dispersion of O/H in the outskirts of N-galaxy. Velocity dispersion of the emission-line gas is the lowest in the star-forming sites of the bridge and exceeds 50-70 km/s in the disturbed region of N-galaxy. Based on the SDSS photometrical data and our kinematical profiles we measured the masses of stellar population and the dynamical masses of individual objects. We confirm that the region A is the gravitationally bound tidal dwarf with the age of $10^7 - 10^8 $ yr, which is falling onto the parent S- galaxy. There is no evidence of the significant amount of dark matter in this dwarf galaxy.

Discrete Family of Dissipative Soliton Pairs in Mode-Locked Fiber Lasers

We numerically investigate the formation of soliton pairs (bound states) in mode-locked fiber ring lasers. In the distributed model (complex cubic-quintic Ginzburg-Landau equation) we observe a discrete family of soliton pairs with equidistantly increasing peak separation. This family was identified by two alternative numerical schemes and the bound state instability was disclosed by a linear stability analysis. Moreover, similar families of unstable bound state solutions have been found in a more realistic lumped laser model with an idealized saturable absorber (instantaneous response). We show that a stabilization of these bound states can be achieved when the finite relaxation time of the saturable absorber is taken into account. The domain of stability can be controlled by varying this relaxation time.
