Democracy from topology

Chiral form fields in $d$ dimensions can be effectively described as edge modes of topological Chern-Simons theories in $d+1$ dimensions. At the same time, manifestly Lorentz-invariant Lagrangian description of such fields directly in terms of a $d$-dimensional field theory is challenging and requires introducing nontrivial auxiliary gauge fields eliminated on-shell with extra gauge symmetries. A recent work by Arvanitakis et al.\ demonstrates (emphasizing the case of 2d chiral bosons) that the two approaches are related, and a peculiar reduction on the $(d+1)$-dimensional topological Lagrangian automatically leads to $d$-dimensional Lagrangians with appropriate sets of auxiliary fields. We develop this setup in three distinct directions. First, we demonstrate how arbitrary Abelian self-interactions for chiral forms can be included using nonlinear boundary terms in the Chern-Simons theory. Second, by generalizing the Chern-Simons theory to the BF theory, we obtain an analogous democratic description of non-chiral form fields, where electric and magnetic potentials appear as explicit dynamical variables. Third, we discuss the effects of introducing topological interactions in the higher-dimensional bulk, which produce extra interaction terms in the boundary theory. When applied to a topological 4-form field in 12 dimensions, this construction results in a democratic description of the 3-form gauge field of the 11-dimensional supergravity.

Obstruction to ergodicity in nonlinear Schrödinger equations with resonant potentials

We identify a class of trapping potentials in cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equations (NLSEs) that make them non-integrable, but prevent the emergence of power spectra associated with ergodicity. The potentials are characterized by equidistant energy spectra (e.g., the harmonic-oscillator trap), which give rise to a large number of resonances enhancing the nonlinearity. In a broad range of dynamical solutions, spanning the regimes in which the nonlinearity may be either weak or strong in comparison with the linear part of the NLSE, the power spectra are shaped as narrow (quasi-discrete) evenly spaced spikes, unlike generic truly continuous (ergodic) spectra. We develop an analytical explanation for the emergence of these spectral features in the case of weak nonlinearity. In the strongly nonlinear regime, the presence of such structures is tracked numerically by performing simulations with random initial conditions. Some potentials that prevent ergodicity in this manner are of direct relevance to Bose-Einstein condensates: they naturally appear in 1D, 2D and 3D Gross-Pitaevskii equations (GPEs), the quintic version of these equations, and a two-component GPE system.

Random matrices with row constraints and eigenvalue distributions of graph Laplacians

Symmetric matrices with zero row sums occur in many theoretical settings and in real-life applications. When the offdiagonal elements of such matrices are i.i.d. random variables and the matrices are large, the eigenvalue distributions converge to a peculiar universal curve $p_{\mathrm{zrs}}(λ)$ that looks like a cross between the Wigner semicircle and a Gaussian distribution. An analytic theory for this curve, originally due to Fyodorov, can be developed using supersymmetry-based techniques. We extend these derivations to the case of sparse matrices, including the important case of graph Laplacians for large random graphs with $N$ vertices of mean degree $c$. In the regime $1\ll c\ll N$, the eigenvalue distribution of the ordinary graph Laplacian (diffusion with a fixed transition rate per edge) tends to a shifted and scaled version of $p_{\mathrm{zrs}}(λ)$, centered at $c$ with width $\sim\sqrt{c}$. At smaller $c$, this curve receives corrections in powers of $1/\sqrt{c}$ accurately captured by our theory. For the normalized graph Laplacian (diffusion with a fixed transition rate per vertex), the large $c$ limit is a shifted and scaled Wigner semicircle, again with corrections captured by our analysis.

Three approaches to chiral form interactions

We briefly review and critically compare three approaches to constructing Lagrangian theories of self-interacting Abelian chiral form fields with manifest Lorentz invariance. The first approach relies on the original ideas of Pasti, Sorokin, and Tonin (PST) and has been explored since the late 1990s. The second approach was introduced by Ashoke Sen in 2015. The third approach has been developed over the last few years in the works of the present authors and other collaborators and may be called the 'clone field' formalism since it features an auxiliary 'clone' of the gauge field sector. We argue that this last approach shares the attractive features of the other two while avoiding their respective shortcomings. Like in Sen's approach, within the clone field formalism, arbitrary interactions can be straightforwardly included in any number of dimensions (treating interactions becomes very difficult in the PST formalism in dimensions greater than 6). Like in the PST approach, all the auxiliary fields are gauged away on-shell (while in Sen's approach, they merely decouple from the physical fields but remain dynamical).

De Sitter bubbles from anti-de Sitter fluctuations

Cosmological acceleration is difficult to accommodate in theories of fundamental interactions involving supergravity and superstrings. An alternative is that the acceleration is not universal but happens in a large localized region, which is possible in theories admitting regular black holes with de Sitter-like interiors. We considerably strengthen this scenario by placing it in a global anti-de Sitter background, where the formation of 'de Sitter bubbles' will be enhanced by mechanisms analogous to the Bizon-Rostworowski instability in general relativity. This opens an arena for discussing the production of multiple accelerating universes from anti-de Sitter fluctuations. We demonstrate such collapse enhancement by explicit numerical work in the context of a simple two-dimensional dilaton-gravity model that mimics the spherically symmetric sector of higher-dimensional gravities.

Bounds on quantum evolution complexity via lattice cryptography

We address the difference between integrable and chaotic motion in quantum theory as manifested by the complexity of the corresponding evolution operators. Complexity is understood here as the shortest geodesic distance between the time-dependent evolution operator and the origin within the group of unitaries. (An appropriate `complexity metric' must be used that takes into account the relative difficulty of performing `nonlocal' operations that act on many degrees of freedom at once.) While simply formulated and geometrically attractive, this notion of complexity is numerically intractable save for toy models with Hilbert spaces of very low dimensions. To bypass this difficulty, we trade the exact definition in terms of geodesics for an upper bound on complexity, obtained by minimizing the distance over an explicitly prescribed infinite set of curves, rather than over all possible curves. Identifying this upper bound turns out equivalent to the closest vector problem (CVP) previously studied in integer optimization theory, in particular, in relation to lattice-based cryptography. Effective approximate algorithms are hence provided by the existing mathematical considerations, and they can be utilized in our analysis of the upper bounds on quantum evolution complexity. The resulting algorithmically implemented complexity bound systematically assigns lower values to integrable than to chaotic systems, as we demonstrate by explicit numerical work for Hilbert spaces of dimensions up to ~10^4.

Nonlinear (chiral) p-form electrodynamics

In our previous article Phys. Rev. Lett. 127 (2021) 271601, we announced a novel 'democratic' Lagrangian formulation of general nonlinear electrodynamics in four dimensions that features electric and magnetic potentials on equal footing. Here, we give an expanded and more detailed account of this new formalism, and then proceed to push it significantly further by building the corresponding Lagrangian theories of higher form field interactions in arbitrary dimensions. Special attention is given to interactions of chiral 2k-forms in 4k+2 dimensions, with further details for 2-forms in 6 dimensions and 4-forms in 10 dimensions. We comment more broadly on the structure of covariant equations of motion for chiral fields, and on the place of our Lagrangian theories in this context. The Lagrangian theories we develop are simple and explicit, and cover a much broader class of interactions than all past attempts in the literature.

Resistance distance distribution in large sparse random graphs

We consider an Erdos-Renyi random graph consisting of N vertices connected by randomly and independently drawing an edge between every pair of them with probability c/N so that at N->infinity one obtains a graph of finite mean degree c. In this regime, we study the distribution of resistance distances between the vertices of this graph and develop an auxiliary field representation for this quantity in the spirit of statistical field theory. Using this representation, a saddle point evaluation of the resistance distance distribution is possible at N->infinity in terms of an 1/c expansion. The leading order of this expansion captures the results of numerical simulations very well down to rather small values of c; for example, it recovers the empirical distribution at c=4 or 6 with an overlap of around 90%. At large values of c, the distribution tends to a Gaussian of mean 2/c and standard deviation sqrt{2/c^3}. At small values of c, the distribution is skewed toward larger values, as captured by our saddle point analysis, and many fine features appear in addition to the main peak, including subleading peaks that can be traced back to resistance distances between vertices of specific low degrees and the rest of the graph. We develop a more refined saddle point scheme that extracts the corresponding degree-differentiated resistance distance distributions. We then use this approach to recover analytically the most apparent of the subleading peaks that originates from vertices of degree 1. Rather intuitively, this subleading peak turns out to be a copy of the main peak, shifted by one unit of resistance distance and scaled down by the probability for a vertex to have degree 1. We comment on a possible lack of smoothness in the true N->infinity distribution suggested by the numerics.

Democratic Lagrangians for Nonlinear Electrodynamics

We construct a Lagrangian for general nonlinear electrodynamics that features electric and magnetic potentials on equal footing. In the language of this Lagrangian, discrete and continuous electric-magnetic duality symmetries can be straightforwardly imposed, leading to a simple formulation for theories with the $SO(2)$ duality invariance. When specialized to the conformally invariant case, our construction provides a manifestly duality-symmetric formulation of the recently discovered ModMax theory. We briefly comment on a natural generalization of this approach to $p$-forms in $2p+2$ dimensions.

Fermi-Pasta-Ulam phenomena and persistent breathers in the harmonic trap

We consider the long-term weakly nonlinear evolution governed by the two-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation with an isotropic harmonic oscillator potential. The dynamics in this regime is dominated by resonant interactions between quartets of linear normal modes, accurately captured by the corresponding resonant Hamiltonian system. In the framework of this system, we identify Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-like recurrence phenomena, whereby the normal-mode spectrum passes in close proximity of the initial configuration, and two-mode states with time-independent mode amplitude spectra that translate into long-lived breathers of the original NLS equation. We comment on possible implications of these findings for nonlinear optics and matter-wave dynamics in Bose-Einstein condensates.

The birth of geometry in exponential random graphs

Inspired by the prospect of having discretized spaces emerge from random graphs, we construct a collection of simple and explicit exponential random graph models that enjoy, in an appropriate parameter regime, a roughly constant vertex degree and form very large numbers of simple polygons (triangles or squares). The models avoid the collapse phenomena that plague naive graph Hamiltonians based on triangle or square counts. More than that, statistically significant numbers of other geometric primitives (small pieces of regular lattices, cubes) emerge in our ensemble, even though they are not in any way explicitly pre-programmed into the formulation of the graph Hamiltonian, which only depends on properties of paths of length 2. While much of our motivation comes from hopes to construct a graph-based theory of random geometry (Euclidean quantum gravity), our presentation is completely self-contained within the context of exponential random graph theory, and the range of potential applications is considerably more broad.

Time-periodicities in holographic CFTs

Dynamics in AdS spacetimes is characterized by various time-periodicities. The most obvious of these is the time-periodic evolution of linearized fields, whose normal frequencies form integer-spaced ladders as a direct consequence of the structure of representations of the conformal group. There are also explicitly known time-periodic phenomena on much longer time scales inversely proportional to the coupling in the weakly nonlinear regime. We ask what would correspond to these long time periodicities in a holographic CFT, provided that such a CFT reproducing the AdS bulk dynamics in the large central charge limit has been found. The answer is a very large family of multiparticle operators whose conformal dimensions form simple ladders with spacing inversely proportional to the central charge. We give an explicit demonstration of these ideas in the context of a toy model holography involving a $ϕ^4$ probe scalar field in AdS, but we expect the applicability of the underlying structure to be much more general.

Robustness of the Cosmological Constant Damping Mechanism Through Matter Eras

A dynamical resolution to the cosmological constant fine-tuning problem has been previously put forward, based on a scalar-tensor gravitational theory possessing de Sitter attractor solutions characterized by a small Hubble expansion rate, irrespective of an initially large vacuum energy. We show that a technically natural subregion of the parameter space yields a cosmological evolution through radiation- and matter-dominated eras that is essentially indistinguishable from that predicted by General Relativity. Similarly, the proposed model automatically satisfies the observational constraints on a fifth force mediated by the new scalar degree of freedom.

Resonant Hamiltonian systems and weakly nonlinear dynamics in AdS spacetimes

Weakly nonlinear dynamics in anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetimes is reviewed, keeping an eye on the AdS instability conjecture and focusing on the resonant approximation that accurately captures in a simplified form the long-term evolution of small initial data. Topics covered include turbulent and regular motion, dynamical recurrences analogous to the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam phenomena in oscillator chains, and relations between AdS dynamics and nonrelativistic nonlinear Schrodinger equations in harmonic potentials. Special mention is given to the way the classical dynamics of weakly nonlinear strongly resonant systems is illuminated by perturbative considerations within the corresponding quantum theories, in particular, in relation to quantum chaos theory.

Melonic dominance and the largest eigenvalue of a large random tensor

We consider a Gaussian rotationally invariant ensemble of random real totally symmetric tensors with independent normally distributed entries, and estimate the largest eigenvalue of a typical tensor in this ensemble by examining the rate of growth of a random initial vector under successive applications of a nonlinear map defined by the random tensor. In the limit of a large number of dimensions, we observe that a simple form of melonic dominance holds, and the quantity we study is effectively determined by a single Feynman diagram arising from the Gaussian average over the tensor components. This computation suggests that the largest tensor eigenvalue in our ensemble in the limit of a large number of dimensions is proportional to the square root of the number of dimensions, as it is for random real symmetric matrices.

Polynomial Duality-Symmetric Lagrangians for Free p-Forms

We explore the properties of polynomial Lagrangians for chiral $p$-forms previously proposed by the last named author, and in particular, provide a self-contained treatment of the symmetries and equations of motion that shows a great economy and simplicity of this formalism. We further use analogous techniques to construct polynomial democratic Lagrangians for general $p$-forms where electric and magnetic potentials appear on equal footing as explicit dynamical variables. Due to our reliance on the differential form notation, the construction is compact and universally valid for forms of all ranks, in any number of dimensions.

Time-periodic quantum states of weakly interacting bosons in a harmonic trap

We consider identical quantum bosons with weak contact interactions in a two-dimensional isotropic harmonic trap, and focus on states at the Lowest Landau Level (LLL). At linear order in the coupling parameter $g$, we exploit the rich algebraic structure of the problem to give an explicit construction of a large family of quantum states with energies of the form $E_0+gE_1/4+O(g^2)$, where $E_0$ and $E_1$ are integers. As a result, any superposition of these states evolves periodically with a period of at most $8π/g$ until, at much longer time scales of order $1/g^2$, corrections to the energies of order $g^2$ become important and may upset this perfectly periodic behavior. We further construct coherent-like combinations of these states that naturally connect to classical dynamics in an appropriate regime, and explain how our findings relate to the known time-periodic features of the corresponding weakly nonlinear classical theory. We briefly comment on possible generalizations of our analysis to other numbers of spatial dimensions and other analogous physical systems.

Turbulent cascades in a truncation of the cubic Szego equation and related systems

The cubic Szego equation has been studied as an integrable model for deterministic turbulence, starting with the foundational work of Gerard and Grellier. We introduce a truncated version of this equation, wherein a majority of the Fourier mode couplings are eliminated while the signature features of the model are preserved, namely, a Lax-pair structure and a nested hierarchy of finite-dimensional dynamically invariant manifolds. Despite the impoverished structure of the interactions, the turbulent behaviors of our new equation are stronger in an appropriate sense than for the original cubic Szego equation. We construct explicit analytic solutions displaying exponential growth of Sobolev norms. We furthermore introduce a family of models that interpolate between our truncated system and the original cubic Szego equation, along with a few other related deformations. All of these models possess Lax pairs, invariant manifolds, and display a variety of turbulent cascades. We additionally mention numerical evidence that shows an even stronger type of turbulence in the form of a finite-time blow-up in some different, closely related dynamical systems.
