Free string evolution across plane wave singularities

In these proceedings, we summarize our studies of free string propagation in (near-)singular scale-invariant plane wave geometries. We analyze the singular limit of the evolution for the center-of-mass motion and all excited string modes. The requirement that the entire excitation energy of the string should be finite excludes consistent propagation across the singularity, in case no dimensionful scales are introduced at the singular locus (in an otherwise scale-invariant space-time).

On discrete features of the wave equation in singular pp-wave backgrounds

We analyze the wave equation in families of pp-wave geometries developing strong localized scale-invariant singularities in certain limits. For both cases of well-localized pp-waves and the so-called null-cosmologies, we observe an intriguing discrete dependence of the existence of a singular limit on the normalization of the pp-wave profile. We also find restrictive matching conditions relating the geometries before and after the singularity (if a singular limit for the solutions of the wave equation with initial conditions specified away from the near-singular region is assumed to exist).

Notes on quantum evolution across singularities

In a number of model contexts, evolution across space-time singularities (reminiscent of the cosmological singularities) involves time-dependent quantum Hamiltonians developing a singularity as a function of time. In this contribution to the proceedings of the 3rd RTN workshop in Valencia, I review some recent investigations of the general properties of such systems.

Quantum evolution across singularities: the case of geometrical resolutions

We continue the study of time-dependent Hamiltonians with an isolated singularity in their time dependence, describing propagation on singular space-times. In previous work, two of us have proposed a "minimal subtraction" prescription for the simplest class of such systems, involving Hamiltonians with only one singular term. On the other hand, Hamiltonians corresponding to geometrical resolutions of space-time tend to involve multiple operator structures (multiple types of dependence on the canonical variables) in an essential way. We consider some of the general properties of such (near-)singular Hamiltonian systems, and further specialize to the case of a free scalar field on a two-parameter generalization of the null-brane space-time. We find that the singular limit of free scalar field evolution exists for a discrete subset of the possible values of the two parameters. The coordinates we introduce reveal a peculiar reflection property of scalar field propagation on the generalized (as well as the original) null-brane. We further present a simple family of pp-wave geometries whose singular limit is a light-like hyperplane (discontinuously) reflecting the positions of particles as they pass through it.

Quantum evolution across singularities

Attempts to consider evolution across space-time singularities often lead to quantum systems with time-dependent Hamiltonians developing an isolated singularity as a function of time. Examples include matrix theory in certain singular time-dependent backgounds and free quantum fields on the two-dimensional compactified Milne universe. Due to the presence of the singularities in the time dependence, the conventional quantum-mechanical evolution is not well-defined for such systems. We propose a natural way, mathematically analogous to renormalization in conventional quantum field theory, to construct unitary quantum evolution across the singularity. We carry out this procedure explicitly for free fields on the compactified Milne universe and compare our results with the matching conditions considered in earlier work (which were based on the covering Minkowski space).

D0-brane recoil revisited

One-loop string scattering amplitudes computed using the standard D0-brane conformal field theory (CFT) suffer from infrared divergences associated with recoil. A systematic framework to take recoil into account is the worldline formalism, where fixed boundary conditions are replaced by dynamical D0-brane worldlines. We show that, in the worldline formalism, the divergences that plague the CFT are automatically cancelled in a non-trivial way. The amplitudes derived in the worldline formalism can be reproduced by deforming the CFT with a specific "recoil operator", which is bilocal and different from the ones previously suggested in the literature.

Local recoil of extended solitons: a string theory example

It is well-known that localized topological defects (solitons) experience recoil when they suffer an impact by incident particles. Higher-dimensional topological defects develop distinctive wave patterns propagating along their worldvolume under similar circumstances. For 1-dimensional topological defects (vortex lines), these wave patterns fail to decay in the asymptotic future: the propagating wave eventually displaces the vortex line a finite distance away from its original position (the distance is proportional to the transferred momentum). The quantum version of this phenomenon, which we call ``local recoil'', can be seen as a simple geometric manifestation of the absence of spontaneous symmetry breaking in 1+1 dimensions. Analogously to soliton recoil, local recoil of vortex lines is associated with infrared divergences in perturbative expansions. In perturbative string theory, such divergences appear in amplitudes for closed strings scattering off a static D1-brane. Through a Dirac-Born-Infeld analysis, it is possible to resum these divergences in a way that yields finite, momentum-conserving amplitudes.

Worldline techniques for string theory solitons: recoil, annihilation and pair production

We analyze a model of interacting particles and strings described by a path integral with the Dirichlet boundary conditions. Such model is a natural framework to examine the processes involving the center-of-mass motion of string theory D0-branes: recoil, annihilation and pair production. We demonstrate that, within the proposed formalism, the exclusive annihilation/pair-production amplitudes admit a saddle point evaluation. Even though the saddle point equation cannot be solved analytically, it allows to extract valuable information on the coupling constant dependence of the amplitudes. In particular, D0-brane pair production turns out to be suppressed as exp[-O(1/g_{st}^2)], much stronger than the naive expectation exp[-O(1/g_{st})]. All our derivations generalize rather immediately to the case of unstable D0-brane decay. In conclusion, we briefly comment on the possible implications our results may have for the conventional soliton-anti-soliton annihilation.
