Transition between long and short-range helical orders in mixed B20 cubic helimagnets

A model of B20 helimagnet with strong (frustrating) defect bonds is considered. Single defect provides dipolar field-like distortion of the helical magnetic ordering. At finite defect bond concentrations, the spiral vector acquires correction to its value in the pure system. Moreover, it is shown that the strong defects of sufficient but small concentration are able to destroy long-range order driving the system to the phase with short-range helical ordering. It is argued that the developed approach allows describing main experimental observations in Mn$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$Si and Mn$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Si compounds.

Magnetodipolar interaction and quasiparticles delocalization in disordered quantum magnets

It is well-known that disordered quantum magnets usually host localized elementary excitations in gapped phases. Here we show that long-range magnetodipolar interaction can lead to quasiparticles delocalization in the three-dimensional case, similarly to the phenomenon previously described for localized vibrational modes in disordered solids. Employing renormalization group-like ideas, the average eigenmode occupation number is found to scale with the system size, which also leads to sub-diffusive dynamical properties of the system.

Mean-field approach for skyrmion lattice in hexagonal frustrated antiferromagnets

Simple mean-field approach for frustrated antiferromagnets on hexagonal lattices, aimed to describe the high-temperature part of the temperature-magnetic field phase diagram, is proposed. It is shown, that an interplay between modulation vector symmetry, Zeeman energy and magneto-dipolar interaction leads to stabilization of the triple-$Q$ skyrmion lattice in a certain region of the phase diagram. Corresponding analytical expressions for phase boundaries are derived. It is argued that the developed theory can be applied for the description of the high-temperature part of the phase diagram observed experimentally for Gd$_2$PdSi$_3$ compound.

Bench tests for microscopic theory of Raman scattering in powders of disordered nonpolar crystals: nanodiamonds and Si nanoparticles

Recent Raman data on diamond and crystalline Si nanopowders are analyzed with the use of a microscopic theory of Raman scattering in ensembles of disordered nonpolar nanocrystals. The large width of the Raman peak in nanoparticles as compared to the corresponding peak in bulk materials and the peak inverse dependence on the particle size observed experimentally are explained within the framework of the theory. It is shown that this theory is capable to extract confidently from the Raman data four important microscopic characteristics of the nanopowder including the mean particle size, the variance of the particle size distribution function, the strength of intrinsic disorder in the particle, and the effective faceting number which parameterizes the particle shape.

Effects of bond disorder and surface amorphization on optical phonon lifetimes and Raman peak shape in crystalline nanoparticles

Optical phonons in nanoparticles with the randomness of interatomic bonds are considered both analytically and numerically. For weak dilute disorder two qualitatively different regimes of separated and overlapped levels are observed, resembling the case of random atomic masses investigated previously. At stronger and/or more dense disorder, the particles become essentially inhomogeneous, thus constituting the minimal model to describe an amorphous phase, where the picture of vibrational modes becomes more subtle. We concentrate here on the experimentally relevant case of strong disorder located near the particle surface and formulate the core-shell model aimed to describe the ubiquitous phenomenon of particle surface amorphization. We observe a peculiar effect of volume optical phonons "repelling" from the disordered shell. It results in the Raman spectrum in the form of a combination of narrow well-resolved peaks stemming from the quantized modes of a pure particle core (red-shifted due to its effective smaller size), and the noisy background signal from the disordered shell placed primarily to the right from the main Raman peak.

Thermodynamically stable skyrmion lattice in tetragonal frustrated antiferromagnet with dipolar interaction

Motivated by recent experimental results on GdRu$_2$Si$_2$ [Khanh, N.D., Nakajima, T., Yu, X. et al., \emph{Nat. Nanotechnol.} \textbf{15}, 444-449 (2020)], where nanometric square skyrmion lattice was observed, we propose simple analytical mean-field description of the high-temperature part of the phase diagram of centrosymmetric tetragonal frustrated antiferromagnets with dipolar interaction in the external magnetic field. In the reciprocal space dipolar forces provide momentum dependent biaxial anisotropy. It is shown that in tetragonal lattice in the large part of the Brillouin zone for mutually perpendicular modulation vectors in the $ab$ plane this anisotropy has mutually perpendicular easy axes and collinear middle axes, what leads to double-Q modulated spin structure stabilization. The latter turns out to be a square skyrmion lattice in the large part of its stability region with the topological charge $\pm 1$ per magnetic unit cell, which is determined by the frustrated exchange coupling, and, thus, nanometer-sized. In the presence of additional single-ion easy-axis anisotropy, easy and middle axes can be swapped, which leads to different phase diagram. It is argued that the latter case is relevant to GdRu$_2$Si$_2$.

Magnon spectrum and electron spin resonance in antiferromagnet with large single-ion easy plane anisotropy

Motivated by recent experiments on quantum magnet NiCl$_{2}$-4SC(NH$_{2}$)$_{2}$ (DTN) and its Br-doped counterpart DTNX we propose a theoretical description of optical magnon branch in the antiferromagnet with large single-ion anisotropy in the magnetically ordered phase. In the framework of the 1/S expansion we derive analytical expressions for optical magnon with $\mathbf{k}=0$ energy magnetic field dependence $Δ(h)$. It is shown that in the linear spin wave approximation $Δ(h)$ is monotonic without extrema whereas first order in 1/S corrections makes it drastically different function with a minimum near the center of magnetically ordered phase. The latter behaviour was observed in ESR experiments. Moreover, we show that $Δ(h)$ has nontrivial dependence on the system parameters. It solves the discrepancy between inelastic neutron scattering data where the growth of interaction constants in DTNX with small Br concentration was observed and ESR experiments showing almost unchanged $Δ(h)$ in comparison with pure DTN.

Lifetimes of Confined Optical Phonons and the Shape of a Raman Peak in Disordered Nanoparticles: I. Analytical Treatment

Microscopic description of Raman spectra in nanopowders of nonpolar crystals is accomplished by developing the theory of disorder-induced broadening of optical vibrational eigenmodes. Analytical treatment of this problem is performed, and line shape and width are determined as functions of phonon quantum numbers, nanoparticle shape, size, and the strength of disorder. The results are found to be strongly dependent on either the broadened line is separated or it is overlapped with other lines of the spectrum. Three models of disorder, i.e. weak point-like impurities, weak smooth random potential and strong rare impurities are investigated in details. The possibility to form the phonon-impurity bound state is also studied.

Lifetimes of Confined Optical Phonons and the Shape of a Raman Peak in Disordered Nanoparticles: II. Numerical Treatment

Disorder-induced broadening of optical vibrational eigenmodes in nanoparticles of nonpolar crystals is studied numerically. The methods previously used to treat phonons in defectless particles are adjusted for numerical evaluation of the disordered problem. Imperfections in the form of Gaussian and binary disorders as well as surface irregularities are investigated thoroughly in a wide range of impurity concentrations and disorder strengths. For dilute and weak point-like impurities the regimes of separated and overlapped phonon levels are obtained and the behavior of the linewidth predicted theoretically is confirmed, the crossover scale falls into the actual range of several nanometers. These notions survive for strong dilute impurities, as well. Regimes and crossovers predicted by theory are checked and identified, and minor discrepancies are discussed. To mention a few of them: slower than in theory increasing of the linewidth with the phonon quantum number for weak disorder and only qualitative agreement between theory and numerics for resonant broadening in strong dilute disorder. The novel phenomena discovered numerically are: "mesoscopic smearing" of distribution function in the ensemble of identical disordered particles, inflection of the linewidth dependence on the impurity concentration for light "dense" binary impurities, and position-dependent capability of strong impurity to catch the phonon. It is shown that surface irregularities contribute to the phonon linewidth less than the volume disorder, and their rate reveals faster decay with increasing of the particle size. It is argued that the results of present research are applicable also for quantum dots and short quantum wires.

Self-consistent T-matrix approach to gap renormalization in quantum magnets with bond disorder

Based on the self-consistent T-matrix approximation (SCTMA), analytical theory of density of states (DOS) in three-dimensional quantum magnets with the bond disorder is proposed. It successfully describes DOS in both cases of resonant and non-resonant scattering which appearance is governed by the ratio of scattering length and the average distance between impurities. Corrections to the quasiparticles band gap in these cases are shown to be $\propto c^{2/3}$ and $\propto c$, respectively. Moreover, the theory yields a semi-circle form of DOS for the bound states inside the gap which results in highly nontrivial DOS in the intermediate parameters region between two limiting cases when the band DOS and the semi-circle are overlapped. Long-wavelength excitations are discussed. In the resonant regime their damping is almost constant $\propto c^{2/3}$, which according to Ioffe-Regel criterion means their localization. Applicability of the theory is illustrated by a quantitative description of the recent experimental data on spin-dimer system Ba$_{3-x}$Sr$_x$Cr$_2$O$_8$.
