Can freestanding Xene monolayers behave as excitonic insulators?

We predict a phase transition in freestanding monolayer Xenes from the semiconducting phase to the excitonic insulating (EI) phase can be induced by reducing an external electric field below some critical value which is unique to each material. The splitting of the conduction and valence bands due to spin-orbit coupling at non-zero electric fields leads to the formation of $A$ and $B$ excitons in the larger or smaller band gap, with correspondingly larger or smaller binding energies. Our calculations show the coexistence of the semiconducting phase of $A$ excitons with the EI phase of $B$ excitons for a particular range of electric field. The dielectric environment precludes the existence of the EI phase in supported or encapsulated monolayer Xenes.

Laplace transform approach for the dynamics of N qubits coupled to a resonator

An approach to use the method of Laplace transform for the perturbative solution of the Schrödinger equation at any order of the perturbation for a system of $N$ qubits coupled to a cavity with $n$ photons is suggested. We investigate the dynamics of a system of $N$ superconducting qubits coupled to a common resonator with time-dependent coupling. To account for the contribution of the dynamical Lamb effect to the probability of excitation of the qubit, we consider counter-rotating terms in the qubit-photon interaction Hamiltonian. As an example, we illustrate the method for the case of two qubits coupled to a common cavity. The perturbative solutions for the probability of excitation of the qubit show excellent agreement with the numerical calculations.

On the Optical Properties of Excitons in Buckled 2D Materials in an External Electric Field

We study the binding energies and optical properties of direct and indirect excitons in monolayers and double layer heterostructures of Xenes: silicene, germanene, and stanene. It is demonstrated that an external electric field can be used to tune the eigenenergies and optical properties of excitons by changing the effective mass of charge carriers. The Schrödinger equation with field-dependent exciton reduced mass is solved by using the Rytova-Keldysh (RK) potential for direct excitons, while both the RK and Coulomb potentials are used for indirect excitons. It is shown that for indirect excitons, the choice of interaction potential can cause huge differences in the eigenenergies at large electric fields and significant differences even at small electric fields. Furthermore, our calculations show that the choice of material parameters has a significant effect on the binding energies and optical properties of direct and indirect excitons. These calculations contribute to the rapidly growing body of research regarding the excitonic and optical properties of this new class of two dimensional semiconductors.

Time evolution of the quantum entanglement between $N$ qubits due to dynamical Lamb effect in the presence of dissipation

A theoretical framework to investigate the time evolution of the quantum entanglement due to the dynamical Lamb effect between $N$ superconducting qubits coupled to a coplanar waveguide in the presence of different sources of dissipation is developed. We quantitatively analyze the case of $N=2$ and $3$ qubits under the assumptions of single switching of the coupling and absence of dissipation within a perturbative approach. The same systems are analyzed for the general case of periodic switching of the coupling in the presence of dissipation via numerical calculations. Different measures of entanglement compatible with mixed states are adopted. It is demonstrated that the different measures show different level of details of the latter. The concurrence and the negativity are obtained in the two qubits case, the three-$π$ and the negativity in the three qubits case. It is shown that time-dependent Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states can be created even in presence of dissipation. To maximize the quantum entanglement between the qubits, the effects of tuning several parameters of the system are investigated.

Optical Absorption by Indirect Excitons in a Transition Metal Dichalcogenide Double Layer

We calculate the binding energy, transition energies, oscillator strength, and absorption coefficient of indirect excitons in transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) double layers separated by an integer number of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) monolayers. The absorption factor, a dimensionless quantity which gives the fraction of incoming photons absorbed by the indirect excitons in the double layer, is evaluated. The aforementioned optical quantities are obtained for transitions from the ground state to the first two excited states. All quantities are studied as a function of the interlayer separation, which may be experimentally controlled by varying the number of h-BN monolayers between the TMDC layers. Calculations are performed by using the exciton wave function and eigenenergies obtained for the Keldysh potential. For each material, we choose a combination of the exciton reduced mass and the dielectric screening length from the existing literature which give the largest and the smallest indirect exciton binding energy. These combinations of material parameters provide upper and lower bounds on all quantities presented. Our findings can be examined experimentally via two-photon spectroscopy.

On Bose-Einstein condensation and superfluidity of trapped photons with coordinate-dependent mass and interactions

The condensate density profile of trapped two-dimensional gas of photons in an optical microcavity, filled by a dye solution, is analyzed taking into account a coordinate-dependent effective mass of cavity photons and photon-photon coupling parameter. The profiles for the densities of the superfluid and normal phases of trapped photons in the different regions of the system at the fixed temperature are analyzed. The radial dependencies of local mean-field phase transition temperature $T_c^0 (r)$ and local Kosterlitz-Thouless transition temperature $T_c (r)$ for trapped microcavity photons are obtained. The coordinate dependence of cavity photon effective mass and photon-photon coupling parameter is important for the mirrors of smaller radius with the high trapping frequency, which provides BEC and superfluidity for smaller critical number of photons at the same temperature. We discuss a possibility of an experimental study of the density profiles for the normal and superfluid components in the system under consideration.

Tunable quantum entanglement of three qubits in a non-stationary cavity

We investigate the tunable quantum entanglement and the probabilities of excitations in a system of three qubits in a non-stationary cavity due to the dynamical Lamb effect, caused by non-adiabatic fast change of the boundary conditions of the cavity. The transition amplitudes and the probabilities of excitation of qubits due to the dynamical Lamb effect have been evaluated. The conditional concurrence and the conditional residual tangle for each fixed amount of created photons are introduced and calculated as measures of the pairwise or three-way dynamical quantum entanglement of the qubits. We also give a prescription on how to increase the values of those quantities by controlling the frequency of the cavity photons. A physical realization of the system with three superconducting qubits, coupled to a coplanar waveguide entangled due to the non-adiabatic fast change of boundary conditions of the cavity is proposed.

Superfluidity of Dipolar Excitons in a Black Phosphorene Double Layer

We study the formation of dipolar excitons and their superfluidity in a black phosphorene double layer. The analytical expressions for the single dipolar exciton energy spectrum and wave function are obtained. It is predicted that a weakly interacting gas of dipolar excitons in a double layer of black phosphorus exhibits superfluidity due to the dipole-dipole repulsion between the dipolar excitons. In calculations are employed the Keldysh and Coulomb potentials for the interaction between the charge carriers to analyze the influence of the screening effects on the studied phenomena. It is shown that the critical velocity of superfluidity, the spectrum of collective excitations, concentrations of the superfluid and normal component, and mean field critical temperature for superfluidity are anisotropic and demonstrate the dependence on the direction of motion of dipolar excitons. The critical temperature for superfluidity increases if the exciton concentration and the interlayer separation increase. It is shown that the dipolar exciton binding energy and mean field critical temperature for superfluidity are sensitive to the electron and hole effective masses. The proposed experiment to observe a directional superfluidity of excitons is addressed.

Quantum entanglement for two qubits in a nonstationary cavity

The quantum entanglement and the probability of the dynamical Lamb effect for two qubits caused by non-adiabatic fast change of the boundary conditions are studied. The conditional concurrence of the qubits for each fixed number of created photons in a nonstationary cavity is obtained as a measure of the dynamical quantum entanglement due to the dynamical Lamb effect. We discuss the physical realization of the dynamical Lamb effect, based on superconducting qubits.

High-temperature superfuidity of the two-component Bose gas in a TMDC bilayer

The high-temperature superfluidity of two-dimensional dipolar excitons in two parallel TMDC layers is predicted. We study Bose-Einstein condensation in the two-component system of dipolar A and B excitons. The effective mass, energy spectrum of the collective excitations, the sound velocity and critical temperature are obtained for different TMDC materials. It is shown that in the Bogolubov approximation the sound velocity in the two-component dilute exciton Bose gas is always larger than in any one-component. The difference between the sound velocities for two-component and one-component dilute gases is caused by the fact that the sound velocity for two-component system depends on the reduced mass of A and B excitons, which is always smaller than the individual mass of A or B exciton. Due to this fact, the critical temperature Tc for superfluidity for the two-component exciton system in TMDC bilayer is about one order of magnitude higher than Tc in any one-component exciton system. We propose to observe the superfluidity of two-dimensional dipolar excitons in two parallel TMDC layers, which causes two opposite superconducting currents in each TMDC layer.

Spontaneous formation and non-equilibrium dynamics of a soliton-shaped Bose-Einstein condensate in a trap

The Bose-stimulated self-organization of a quasi-two dimensional non-equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensate in an in-plane potential is proposed. We obtained the solution of the nonlinear, driven-dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii equation for a Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in an external asymmetric parabolic potential within the method of the spectral expansion. We found that, in sharp contrast to previous observations, the condensate can spontaneously acquire a soliton-like shape for spatially homogenous pumping. This condensate soliton performs oscillatory motion in a parabolic trap and, also, can spontaneously rotate. Stability of the condensate soliton in the spatially asymmetric trap is analyzed. In addition to the nonlinear dynamics of non-equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensates of ultra-cold atoms, our findings can be applied to the condensates of quantum well excitons and cavity polaritons in semiconductor heterostructure, and to the condensates of photons.

Polariton-based optical switch

Based on the studies of propagation of an exciton-polariton condensate in a patterned optical microcavity with an embedded graphene layer, we propose a design of a Y-shaped electrically-controlled optical switch. The polaritons are driven by a time-independent force due to the microcavity wedge shape and by a time-dependent drag force owing to the interaction of excitons in graphene and the electric current running in a neighboring quantum well. It is demonstrated that one can control the polariton flow direction by changing the direction of the electric current. The simulations also show that an external electric field normal to the microcavity plane can be utilized as an additional parameter that controls the propagation of the signals in the switch. By considering the transient dynamics of the polariton condensate, we estimate the response speed of the switch. Finally, we propose a design of the polariton switch in a flat microcavity based on the geometrically identical Y-shaped quantum well and graphene pattern where the polariton flow is only induced by the drag force.

The electron-hole superfluidity in two coaxial nanotubes

The superfluid phase and Coulomb drag effect caused by the pairing in the system of spatially separated electrons and holes in two coaxial cylindrical nanotubes are predicted. It is found that the drag resistance as a function of temperature experiences a jump at the critical temperature and can be used for the manifestation of the superfluid transition. It is demonstrated that at sufficiently low temperatures the order parameter and free energy density exhibit a kink due to the electron-hole asymmetry that is controlled by the radii of the nanotubes.

Phase transitions in the two-dimensional electron-hole gas

A first order phase transition between a BCS phase and an insulating Mott phase for a gas of spatially separated electrons and holes with tunable Coulomb interaction and variable density is predicted. In the framework of a BCS-like mean-field approach and a Landau expansion in terms of the pairing order parameter the phase diagram is studied. This indicates several phases and phase transitions, including an electron-hole plasma at low density and weak interaction, an intermediate BCS phase with Cooper pairs and an electron-hole plasma at high density and weak interaction. The insulating Mott phase appears for the strong interaction and low temperatures. We briefly discuss the possibilities to realize these phases in realistic systems such as coupled quantum wells and graphene double layers.

Graphene nanoribbon based spaser

A novel type of spaser with the net amplification of surface plasmons (SPs) in doped graphene nanoribbon is proposed. The plasmons in THz region can be generated in a dopped graphene nanoribbon due to nonradiative excitation by emitters like two level quantum dots located along a graphene nanoribbon. The minimal population inversion per unit area, needed for the net amplification of SPs in a doped graphene nanoribbon is obtained. The dependence of the minimal population inversion on the surface plasmon wavevector, graphene nanoribbon width, doping and damping parameters necessary for the amplification of surface plasmons in the armchair graphene nanoribbon is studied.

Superfluidity and collective properties of excitonic polaritons in gapped graphene in a microcavity

We predict the formation and superfluidity of polaritons in an optical microcavity formed by excitons in gapped graphene embedded there and microcavity photons. The Rabi splitting related to the creation of an exciton in a graphene layer in the presence of the band gap is obtained. The analysis of collective excitations as well as the sound velocity is presented. We show that the superfluid density and temperature of the Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition are decreasing functions of the energy gap.

Trions in coupled quantum wells and Wigner crystallization

We consider a restricted three body problem, where two interacted particles are located in two dimensional (2D) plane and interact with the third one located in the parallel spatially separated plane. The system of such type can be formed in the semiconductor coupled quantum wells, where the electrons (or holes) and direct excitons spatially separated in different parallel neighboring quantum wells that are sufficiently close to interact and form negative X- or positive X+ indirect trions. It is shown that at large interwell separations, when the interwell separation much greater than the exciton Bohr radius, this problem can be solved analytically using the cluster approach. Analytical results for the energy spectrum and the wave functions of the spatially indirect trion are obtained, their dependence on the interwell separations is analyzed and a conditional probability distribution is calculated. The formation of 2D Wigner crystal of trions at the low densities is predicted. It is shown that the critical density of the formation of the trion Wigner crystal is sufficiently greater than the critical density of the electron Wigner crystal.

Superfluidity of dipole excitons in two layers of gapped graphene

A study of the formation of excitons as a problem of two Dirac particles confined in two-layer graphene sheets separated by a dielectric when gaps are opened and they interact via a Coulomb potential is presented. We propose to observe Bose-Einstein condensation and superfluidity of quasi-two-dimensional dipole excitons in double layer graphene in the presence of band gaps. The energy spectrum of the collective excitations, the sound spectrum, and the effective exciton mass are functions of the energy gaps, density and interlayer separation. The superfluid density ns and temperature of the Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition Tc are decreasing functions of the energy gaps as well as the interlayer separation, and therefore, could be controlled by these parameters.
