A Note on Fine-Tuning in Mirage Mediation

Recent progress in string theory moduli stabilization has motivated a mixed modulus-anomaly mediated supersymmetry breaking scenario, also dubbed `mirage mediation'. This scenario has a number of phenomenologically attractive features, in particular with respect to the cosmological gravitino/moduli problem. In this note, we investigate the issues of fine-tuning associated with obtaining the correct electroweak symmetry breaking scale in the mirage mediation scenario. We find that, due to lighter gluinos, the fine-tuning is smaller than that in other mediation mechanisms.

A Stringy Solution to the FCNC Problem

The solution to the supersymmetric FCNC problem may not have a simple field theory interpretation. Here I advocate a possibility based on string selection rules. The requirement of non--trivial Yukawa structures restricts the form of the soft terms such that the FCNC problem often does not arise.

Flavour violation in general supergravity

We reappraise the flavour changing neutral currents (FCNC) problem in string--derived supergravity models. We overview and classify possible sources of flavour violation and find that the problem often does not arise in classes of models which generate hierarchical Yukawa matrices. In such models, constraints from the K- and D-meson systems leave room for substantial flavour non-universality of the soft terms. The current B-physics experiments only begin to probe its natural range. Correlations among different observables can allow one to read off the chirality structure of flavour violating sources. We briefly discuss the lepton sector where the problem of FCNC is indeed serious and perhaps points at an additional symmetry or flavour universality.

Dual Models of Gauge Unification in Various Dimensions

We construct a compactification of the heterotic string on an orbifold T^6/Z_6 leading to the standard model spectrum plus vector--like matter. The standard model gauge group is obtained as an intersection of three SO(10) subgroups of E_8. Three families of SO(10) 16-plets are localized at three equivalent fixed points. Gauge coupling unification favours existence of an intermediate GUT which can have any dimension between five and ten. Various GUT gauge groups occur. For example, in six dimensions one can have E_6 \times SU(3), SU(4) \times SU(4) \times U(1)^2 or SO(8) \times SO(8), depending on which of the compact dimensions are large. The different higher--dimensional GUTs are `dual' to each other. They represent different points in moduli space, with the same massless spectrum and ultraviolet completion.

Maximal Temperature in Flux Compactifications

Thermal corrections have an important effect on moduli stabilization leading to the existence of a maximal temperature, beyond which the compact dimensions decompactify. In this note, we discuss generality of our earlier analysis and apply it to the case of flux compactifications. The maximal temperature is again found to be controlled by the supersymmetry breaking scale, T_{crit} \sim \sqrt{m_{3/2} M_P}.

Probing CP Violation with the Deuteron Electric Dipole Moment

We present an analysis of the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the deuteron as induced by CP-violating operators of dimension 4, 5 and 6 including theta QCD, the EDMs and color EDMs of quarks, four-quark interactions and the Weinberg operator. We demonstrate that the precision goal of the EDM Collaboration's proposal to search for the deuteron EDM, (1-3)\times 10^{-27} e cm, will provide an improvement in sensitivity to these sources of one-two orders of magnitude relative to the existing bounds. We consider in detail the level to which CP-odd phases can be probed within the MSSM.

Dilaton Destabilization at High Temperature

Many compactifications of higher-dimensional supersymmetric theories have approximate vacuum degeneracy. The associated moduli fields are stabilized by non-perturbative effects which break supersymmetry. We show that at finite temperature the effective potential of the dilaton acquires a negative linear term. This destabilizes all moduli fields at sufficiently high temperature. We compute the corresponding critical temperature which is determined by the scale of supersymmetry breaking, the beta-function associated with gaugino condensation and the curvature of the K"ahler potential, T_crit ~ (m_3/2 M_P)^(1/2) (3/β)^(3/4) (K'')^(-1/4). For realistic models we find T_crit ~ 10^11-10^12 GeV, which provides an upper bound on the temperature of the early universe. In contrast to other cosmological constraints, this upper bound cannot be circumvented by late-time entropy production.

Electric Dipole Moments in the MSSM at Large tan(beta)

Within the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM), the large tan(beta) regime can lead to important modifications in the pattern of CP-violating sources contributing to low energy electric dipole moments (EDMs). In particular, four-fermion CP-violating interactions induced by Higgs exchange should be accounted for alongside the constituent EDMs of quarks and electrons. To this end, we present a comprehensive analysis of three low energy EDM observables - namely the EDMs of thallium, mercury and the neutron - at large tan(beta), in terms of one- and two-loop contributions to the constituent EDMs and four-fermion interactions. We concentrate on the constrained MSSM as well as the MSSM with non-universal Higgs masses, and include the CP-violating phases of mu and A. Our results indicate that the atomic EDMs receive significant corrections from four-fermion operators, especially when Im(A) is the only CP-violating source, whereas the neutron EDM remains relatively insensitive to these effects. As a consequence, in a large portion of the parameter space, one cannot infer a separate bound on the electron EDM via the experimental constraint on the thallium EDM. Furthermore, we find that the electron EDM can be greatly reduced due to the destructive interference of one- and two-loop contributions with the latter being dominated by virtual staus.

Heterotic string backgrounds and CP violation

In the framework of $Z_N$ orbifolds, we discuss effects of heterotic string backgrounds including discrete Wilson lines on the Yukawa matrices and their connection to CP violation.

Heterotic Yukawa couplings and continuous Wilson lines

Realistic heterotic string models require the presence of the Wilson lines. We study the effect of continuous Wilson lines on the heterotic Yukawa couplings and find that the presence of continuous Wilson lines affects the magnitude of the twisted Yukawa couplings resulting in their stronger hierarchy.

CP--Violating Invariants in Supersymmetry

I study the weak basis CP-violating invariants in supersymmetric models, in particular those which cannot be expressed in terms of the Jarlskog--type invariants, and find basis--independent conditions for CP conservation. With an example of the K-anti-K mixing, I clarify what are the combinations of supersymmetric parameters which are constrained by experiment.

Electric Dipole Moments in The Limit of Heavy Superpartners

Supersymmetric loop corrections induce potentially large CP-violating couplings of the Higgs bosons to nucleons and electrons that do not vanish in the limit of heavy superpartners. The Higgs-mediated CP-odd four-fermion operators are enhanced by tan^3 beta and induce electric dipole moments of heavy atoms which exceed the current experimental bounds for the electroweak scale Higgs masses and tan beta > 10. If only the first two sfermion generations are heavy, the Higgs-mediated contributions typically dominate over the Barr-Zee type two-loop diagrams at tan beta > 30.

Towards a Realistic Picture of CP Violation in Heterotic String Models

We find that dilaton dominated supersymmetry breaking and spontaneous CP violation can be achieved in heterotic string models with superpotentials singular at the fixed points of the modular group. A semi--realistic picture of CP violation emerges in such models: the CKM phase appears due to a complex VEV of the T-modulus, while the soft supersymmetric CP phases are absent due to an axionic--type symmetry.

Torsion Constraints in the Randall--Sundrum Scenario

Torsion appears due to fermions coupled to gravity and leads to the strongest particle physics bounds on flat extra dimensions. In this work, we consider torsion constraints in the case of a warped extra dimension with brane and bulk fermions. From current data we obtain a 3-sigma bound on the TeV--brane mass scale scale Λ_π> 2.2 (10) TeV for the AdS curvature k=1 (0.01) in (reduced) Planck units. If Dirac or light sterile neutrinos reside on the brane, the bound increases to 17 (78) TeV.

Supersymmetry and Electroweak Leptonic Observables

We study vertex corrections to the leptonic electroweak observables in the general MSSM at tan(beta) < 35. In particular, we address the question of whether supersymmetry can be responsible for the observed 2 sigma deviation from the Standard Model prediction in the invisible width of the Z. We find that the presence of a light (around 100 GeV) chargino and sleptons hinted by the muon g-2 measurements makes the agreement with experiment slightly better and improves the electroweak fit.

The CKM Phase in Heterotic Orbifold Models

We consider properties of the CKM phase in the heterotic orbifold models. We find that at the renormalizable level the CKM phase vanishes identically for the prime orbifolds, whereas it can be non-zero for some non-prime orbifolds. In particular, we study in detail the Z_6-I orbifold which allows for a non-trivial CKM phase and analyze the modular properties of the corresponding Jarlskog invariant. The CKM phase is shown to vanish if the moduli fields are stabilized at Im T_i=\pm 1/2.

Universal Torsion Induced Interaction from Large Extra Dimensions

We consider a model with extra compact dimensions in which only gravity exists in the 4+n dimensional bulk. If the gravitational connection is not assumed to be symmetric, that is, unless torsion is artificially set to zero, then a universal contact interaction among the fermions on the 4-dimensional wall is induced. Using a global fit to Z-pole observables, we find the 3 sigma bound on the scale of quantum gravity to be M_S = 28 TeV for n=2. If Dirac or light sterile neutrinos are present, the data from SN1987A increase the bound to \sqrt{n} M_S >= 210 TeV.

Constraints on Gauged B-3L_tau and Related Theories

We consider extensions of the Standard Model with an extra U(1) gauge boson which couples to B-(alpha L_e + beta L_mu + gamma L_tau) with alpha + beta + gamma = 3. We show that the extra gauge boson necessarily mixes with the Z leading to potentially significant corrections to the Z-f-fbar vertex. The constraints on the size of this correction imposed by the Z-pole data from LEP and SLD are derived.
