D1-D5-P microstates at the cap

The geometries describing D1-D5-P bound states in string theory have three regions: flat asymptotics, an anti-de Sitter throat, and a 'cap' region at the bottom of the throat. We identify the CFT description of a known class of supersymmetric D1-D5-P microstate geometries which describe degrees of freedom in the cap region. The class includes both regular solutions and solutions with conical defects, and generalizes configurations with known CFT descriptions: a parameter related to spectral flow in the CFT is generalized from integer to fractional values. We provide strong evidence for this identification by comparing the massless scalar excitation spectrum between gravity and CFT and finding exact agreement.

A toy black hole S-matrix in the D1-D5 CFT

To model the process of absorption and emission of quanta by an extremal D1-D5 black hole in the dual CFT, we consider transitions between different Ramond vacua via absorption and emission of chiral primaries. We compute the probabilities to reach different CFT states starting with a special Ramond vacuum, using techniques of the orbifold CFT. It is found that the processes involving the change of angular momentum by $k$ units are suppressed as 1/N^k

Adding momentum to supersymmetric geometries

We consider general supersymmetric solutions to minimal supergravity in six dimensions, trivially lifted to IIB supergravity. To any such solution we add a travelling-wave deformation involving the additional directions. The deformed solution is given in terms of a function which is harmonic in the background geometry. We also present a family of explicit examples describing microstates of the D1-D5 system on T^4. In the case where the background contains a large AdS region, the deformation is identified as corresponding to an action of a U(1) current of the D1-D5 orbifold CFT on a given state.

Holographic MQCD

We study a brane configuration of D4-branes and NS5-branes in weakly coupled type IIA string theory, which describes in a particular limit d=4 N=1 SU(N+p) supersymmetric QCD with 2N flavors and a quartic superpotential. We describe the geometric realization of the supersymmetric vacuum structure of this gauge theory. We focus on the confining vacua of the gauge theory, whose holographic description is given by the MQCD brane configuration in the near-horizon geometry of N D4-branes. This description, which gives an embedding of MQCD into a field theory decoupled from gravity, is valid for 1 << p << N, in the limit of large five dimensional `t Hooft couplings for the color and flavor groups. We analyze various properties of the theory in this limit, such as the spectrum of mesons, the finite temperature behavior, and the quark-anti-quark potential. We also discuss the same brane configuration on a circle, where it gives a geometric description of the moduli space of the Klebanov-Strassler cascading theory, and some non-supersymmetric generalizations.

Spontaneous SUSY Breaking in Various Dimensions

We generalize the ISS model of spontaneous supersymmetry breaking to lower dimensions. We also comment on the dynamics of the corresponding brane systems in string theory, and on possible applications to gauge/gravity duality.

Dynamical Vacuum Selection in String Theory

We study a system of D-branes localized near an intersection of Neveu-Schwarz fivebranes, that is known to exhibit a landscape of supersymmetric and (metastable) supersymmetry breaking vacua. We show that early universe cosmology drives it to a particular long-lived supersymmetry breaking ground state.

Brane-Antibrane Dynamics From the Tachyon DBI Action

The Tachyon-Dirac-Born-Infeld (TDBI) action captures some aspects of the dynamics of non-BPS D-branes in type II string theory. We show that it can also be used to study the classical interactions of BPS branes and antibranes. Our analysis sheds light on real time D-Dbar tachyon condensation, on the proposal that the tachyon field can be thought of as an extra spatial dimension whose role is similar to the radial direction in holography, and on A. Sen's open string completeness conjecture.

Brane webs and 1/4-BPS geometries

We discuss brane webs preserving eight supercharges and derive geometries produced by them. Consistency conditions of supergravity are shown to impose certain requirements on the locations of the sources, and these restrictions are found to be in a perfect agreement with results of the probe analysis. In particular, solutions of IIB SUGRA describing (p,q) stings are inconsistent, unless the web consists of straight line segments whose orientation is correlated with charges of the string. The geometries produced by membranes and D3 branes are only consistent if brane profiles are holomorphic. Using perturbation theory, we show that a unique gravity solution exists for any allowed distribution of sources. We also revisit 1/4-BPS geometries with AdS_p x S^q asymptotics and derive the boundary conditions leading to regular geometries. All degenerate limits of regular solutions are shown to agree with expectations from the brane probe analysis.

Strings ending on branes from supergravity

We study geometries produced by brane intersections preserving eight supercharges. Typical examples of such configurations are given by fundamental strings ending on Dp branes and we construct gravity solutions describing such intersections. The geometry is specified in terms of two functions obeying coupled differential equations and the boundary conditions are determined by distributions of D branes. We show that a consistency of type IIB supergravity constrains the allowed positions of the branes. The shapes of branes derived from gravity are found to be in a perfect agreement with profiles predicted by the DBI analysis. We also discuss related 1/4-BPS systems in M theory.

1/2-BPS states in M theory and defects in the dual CFTs

We study supersymmetric branes in AdS_7 x S^4 and AdS_4 x S^7. We show that in the former case the membranes should be viewed as M5 branes with fluxes and we identify two types of such fivebranes (they are analogous to giant gravitons and to dual giants). In AdS_4 x S^7 we find both M5 branes with fluxes and freestanding stacks of membranes. We also go beyond probe approximation and construct regular supergravity solutions describing geometries produced by the branes. The metrics are completely specified by one function which satisfies either Laplace or Toda equation and we give a complete classification of boundary conditions leading to smooth geometries. The brane configurations discussed in this paper are dual to various defects in three- and six-dimensional conformal field theories.

On gravitational description of Wilson lines

We study solutions of Type IIB supergravity, which describe the geometries dual to supersymmetric Wilson lines in N=4 super-Yang-Mills. We show that the solutions are uniquely specified by one function which satisfies a Laplace equation in two dimensions. We show that if this function obeys a certain Dirichlet boundary condition, the corresponding geometry is regular, and we find a simple interpretation of this boundary condition in terms of D3 and D5 branes which are dissolved in the geometry. While all our metrics have AdS_5 x S^5 asymptotics, they generically have nontrivial topologies, which can be uniquely specified by a set of non-contractible three- and five-spheres.

Deforming field theories with $U(1)\times U(1)$ global symmetry and their gravity duals

We find the gravity dual of a marginal deformation of ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang Mills, and discuss some of its properties. This deformation is intimately connected with an $SL(2,R)$ symmetry of the gravity theory. The $SL(2,R)$ transformation enables us to find the solutions in a simple way. These field theory deformations, sometimes called $β$ deformations, can be viewed as arising from a star product. Our method works for any theory that has a gravity dual with a $U(1)\times U(1)$ global symmetry which is realized geometrically. These include the field theories that live on D3 branes at the conifold or other toric singularities, as well as their cascading versions.

Bubbling AdS space and 1/2 BPS geometries

We consider all 1/2 BPS excitations of $AdS \times S$ configurations in both type IIB string theory and M-theory. In the dual field theories these excitations are described by free fermions. Configurations which are dual to arbitrary droplets of free fermions in phase space correspond to smooth geometries with no horizons. In fact, the ten dimensional geometry contains a special two dimensional plane which can be identified with the phase space of the free fermion system. The topology of the resulting geometries depends only on the topology of the collection of droplets on this plane. These solutions also give a very explicit realization of the geometric transitions between branes and fluxes. We also describe all 1/2 BPS excitations of plane wave geometries. The problem of finding the explicit geometries is reduced to solving a Laplace (or Toda) equation with simple boundary conditions. We present a large class of explicit solutions. In addition, we are led to a rather general class of $AdS_5$ compactifications of M-theory preserving ${\cal N} =2$ superconformal symmetry. We also find smooth geometries that correspond to various vacua of the maximally supersymmetric mass-deformed M2 brane theory. Finally, we present a smooth 1/2 BPS solution of seven dimensional gauged supergravity corresponding to a condensate of one of the charged scalars.

Adding momentum to D1-D5 system

We construct the first example of asymptotically flat solution which carries three charges (D1,D5 and momentum) and which is completely regular everywhere. The construction utilizes the relation between gravity solutions and spectral flow in the dual CFT. We show that the solution has the right properties to describe one of the microscopic states which are responsible for the entropy of the black hole with three charges.

U(N) Instantons on N=1/2 superspace -- exact solution & geometry of moduli space

We construct the exact solution of one (anti)instanton in N=1/2 super Yang-Mills theory defined on non(anti)commutative superspace. We first identify N = 1/2 superconformal invariance as maximal spacetime symmetry. For gauge group U(2), SU(2) part of the solution is given by the standard (anti)instanton, but U(1) field strength also turns out nonzero. The solution is SO(4) rotationally symmetric. For gauge group U(N), in contrast to the U(2) case, we show that the entire U(N) part of the solution is deformed by non(anti)commutativity and fermion zero-modes. The solution is no longer rotationally symmetric; it is polarized into an axially symmetric configuration because of the underlying non(anti)commutativity. We compute the `information metric' of one (anti) instanton. We find that moduli space geometry is deformed from hyperbolic space (Euclidean anti-de Sitter space) in a way anticipated from reduced spacetime symmetry. Remarkably, the volume measure of the moduli space turns out to be independent of the non(anti)commutativity. Implications to D-branes in Ramond- Ramond flux background and Maldacena's gauge-gravity correspondence are discussed.

Black strings in asymptotically plane wave geometries

We present a class of black string spacetimes which asymptote to maximally symmetric plane wave geometries. Our construction will rely on a solution generating technique, the null Melvin twist, which deforms an asymptotically flat black string spacetime to an asymptotically plane wave black string spacetime while preserving the event horizon.

Renormalizability of Non(anti)commutative Gauge Theories with N=1/2 Supersymmetry

Non(anti)commutative gauge theories are supersymmetric Yang-Mills and matter system defined on a deformed superspace whose coordinates obey non(anti)commutative algebra. We prove that these theories in four dimensions with N=1/2 supersymmetry are renormalizable to all orders in perturbation theory. Our proof is based on operator analysis and symmetry arguments. In a case when the Grassman-even coordinates are commutative, deformation induced by non(anti)commutativity of the Grassman-odd coordinates contains operators of dimension-four or higher. Nevertheless, they do not lead to power divergences in a loop diagram because of absence of operators Hermitian-conjugate to them. In a case when the Grassman-even coordinates are noncommutative, the ultraviolet-infrared mixing makes the theory renormalizable by the planar diagrams, and the deformed operators are not renormalized at all. We also elucidate relation at quantum level between non(anti)commutative deformation and N=1/2 supersymmetry. We point out that the star product structure dictates a specific relation for renormalization among the deformed operators.

Tachyon condensation and `bounce' in the D1-D5 system

We construct supergravity solutions dual to microstates of the D1-D3-D5 system with nonzero B field moduli. Just like the D1-D5 solutions in hep-th/0109154 these solutions are generically nonsingular everywhere, with the `throat' closing smoothly near r=0. We write expressions relating the asymptotic supergravity fields to the integral brane charges. We study the infall of a D1 brane down the throat of the geometries. This test brane `bounces' off the smooth end for generic initial conditions. The details of the bounce depend on both the choice of D1-D3-D5 microstate and the direction of approach of the infalling D1 brane. In the dual field theory description we see that the tachyon mode starts to condense, but the tachyon bounces back up the potential hill without reaching the deepest point of the potential.
