Improved Dark Photon Sensitivity from the Dark SRF Experiment

We report the refined dark-photon exclusion bound from Dark SRF's pathfinder run. Our new result is driven by improved theoretical modeling of frequency instability in high-quality resonant experiments. Our analysis leads to a constraint that is an order of magnitude stronger than previously reported (corresponding to a signal-to-noise ratio that is four orders of magnitude larger). This result represents the world-leading constraint on non-dark-matter dark photons over a wide range of masses below $6\,\rm \mu eV$ and translates to the best laboratory-based limit on the photon mass $m_\gamma<2.9\times 10^{-48}\,\rm g$.

Ultracoherent superconducting cavity-based multiqudit platform with error-resilient control

Realizing the promise of quantum computing requires simultaneously increasing Hilbert-space size and coherence times. While qubit-based architectures have long been the dominant paradigm, large local Hilbert spaces enable qudits, which offer more compact circuits and natural representations for quantum simulation in chemistry, condensed matter, and high-energy physics. Superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavities are attractive building blocks for qudit-based quantum technologies because of their exceptionally low dissipation and large bosonic Hilbert spaces, but turning them into programmable modules requires extra effort because the nonlinear circuitry required for control and measurement often introduces loss and noise that erode the memory advantage. Here we demonstrate a two-mode SRF cavity module weakly coupled to an ancillary transmon circuit and engineered to suppress controller-induced dissipation and dephasing, achieving single-photon lifetimes of 20.6 ms and 15.6 ms and a dephasing time exceeding 40 ms. Using sideband interactions together with error-resilient protocols incorporating measurement-based correction and post-selection, we prepare Fock states up to $N=20$ with fidelities exceeding 95% and generate two-mode entanglement near the coherence limit, approaching 99.9%. By combining ultracoherent storage with high-fidelity control, this work moves cavity-based hardware beyond memory-only operation and establishes a practical route toward high-dimensional encodings and scalable modular quantum information processing.

First characterisation of the MAGO cavity, a superconducting RF detector for kHz-MHz gravitational waves

Heterodyne detection using microwave cavities is a promising method for detecting high-frequency gravitational waves or ultralight axion dark matter. In this work, we report on studies conducted on a spherical 2-cell cavity developed by the MAGO collaboration for high-frequency gravitational waves detection. Although fabricated around 20 years ago, the cavity had not been used since. Due to deviations from the nominal geometry, we conducted a mechanical survey and performed room-temperature plastic tuning. Measurements and simulations of the mechanical resonances and electromagnetic properties were carried out, as these are critical for estimating the cavity's gravitational wave coupling potential. Based on these results, we plan further studies in a cryogenic environment. The cavity characterisation does not only provide valuable experience for a planned physics run but also informs the future development of improved cavity designs.

Phase-controlled improvement of photon lifetime in coupled superconducting cavities

High-quality cavities are crucial for various fundamental physical studies and applications. Here we find that by coupling two cavities directly or via a phase-tunable coupling channel, the photon lifetime of the local field can exceed that of the bare cavities. The cavity photon lifetime is modified by the phases of the initial states and the phase accumulation on the coupling channel which affect the interference between cavities. In experiments, by coupling superconducting radio-frequency cavities via phase-tunable cables, we realize a factor of two improvement in the cavity photon lifetime. The results can bring rich revenue to quantum information science, sensing, and high-energy physics.

Design of axion and axion dark matter searches based on ultra high Q SRF cavities

The Superconducting Quantum Materials and Systems center is developing searches for dark photons, axions and ALPs with the goal of improving upon the current state-of-the-art sensitivity. These efforts leverage on Fermi National Accelerator expertise on ultra-high quality factor superconducting radio frequency cavities combined with the center research on quantum technology. Here we focus on multiple axion searches that utilize ~1E10 quality factor superconducting radio frequency cavities and their resonant modes to enhance the production and/or detection of axions in the cavity volume. In addition, we present preliminary results of single-mode and multi-mode nonlinearity measurements that were carried out as part of an experimental feasibility study to gain insight on the behavior of the ultra-high quality factor resonators and the experimental RF system in the regime relevant for axion searches.
