Log-optimal (d+2)-configurations in d-dimensions

We enumerate and classify all stationary logarithmic configurations of d+2 points on the unit (d-1)-sphere in d-dimensions. In particular, we show that the logarithmic energy attains its relative minima at configurations that consist of two orthogonal to each other regular simplexes of cardinality m and n. The global minimum occurs when m=n if d is even and m=n+1 otherwise. This characterizes a new class of configurations that minimize the logarithmic energy on the (d-1)-sphere for all d. The other two classes known in the literature, the regular simplex and the cross polytope, are both universally optimal configurations.

Neighboring mapping points theorem

We introduce and study a new family of extensions for the Borsuk-Ulam and topological Radon type theorems. The defining idea for this new family is to replace requirements of the form `a subset that is large in some sense goes to a singleton' with requirements of the milder form `a subset that is large in some sense goes to a subset that is small in some sense'. This approach covers the case of mappings m-sphere to n-space with m<n and extends to wider classes of spaces.

Majorization and minimal energy on spheres

In the present paper, we consider the majorization theorem (also known as Karamata's inequality) and the respective minima of the majorization (the so-called M-sets) for f-energy potentials of $m$-point configurations on the unit sphere. In particular, we show the optimality of regular simplexes, describe some M-sets of small cardinality, define and discuss spherical f-designs.

Ramanujan's theorem and highest abundant numbers

In 1915, Ramanujan proved asymptotic inequalities for the sum of divisors function, assuming the Riemann hypothesis (RH). We consider a strong version of Ramanujan's theorem and define highest abundant numbers that are extreme with respect to the Ramanujan and Robin inequalities. Properties of these numbers are very different depending on whether the RH is true or false.

Rigidity of powers and Kosniowski's conjecture

In this paper we state a problem on rigidity of powers, which has a strong topological background for the rigid Hirzebruch genera and Kosniowski's conjecture of unitary circle actions. However, our statement of this problem is elementary enough and does not require any knowledge of algebraic topology. We shall give a solution of this problem for some particular cases. As a consequence, we obtain that Kosniowski's conjecture holds in the case of dimension less than 11 or equal to 14.

Graphs and spherical two-distance sets

Every graph G can be embedded in a Euclidean space as a two-distance set. The Euclidean representation number of G is the smallest dimension in which G is representable by such an embedding. We consider spherical and J-spherical representation numbers of G and give exact formulas for these numbers using multiplicities of polynomials that are defined by the Caley-Menger determinant. One of the main results of the paper are explicit formulas for the representation numbers of the join of graphs which are obtained from W. Kuperberg's type theorem for two-distance sets.

Towards a proof of the 24-cell conjecture

This review paper is devoted to the problems of sphere packings in 4 dimensions. The main goal is to find reasonable approaches for solutions to problems related to densest sphere packings in 4-dimensional Euclidean space. We consider two long-standing open problems: the uniqueness of maximum kissing arrangements in 4 dimensions and the 24-cell conjecture. Note that a proof of the 24-cell conjecture also proves that the checkerboard lattice packing D4 is the densest sphere packing in 4 dimensions.

Cobordism classes of maps and covers for spheres

In this paper we show that for m>n the set of cobordism classes of maps from m-sphere to n-sphere is trivial. The determination of the cobordism homotopy groups of spheres admits applications to the covers for spheres.

Five Essays on the Geometry of László Fejes Tóth

In this paper we consider the following topics related to results of László Fejes Tóth: (1) The Tammes problem and Fejes Tóth's bound on circle packings; (2) Fejes Tóth's problem on maximizing the minimum distance between antipodal pairs of points on the sphere; (3) Fejes Tóth's problem on the maximum kissing number of packings on the sphere; (4) The Fejes Tóth -- Sachs problem on the one--sided kissing numbers; (5) Fejes Tóth's papers on the isoperimetric problem for polyhedra.

KKM type theorems with boundary conditions

We consider generalizations of Gale's colored KKM lemma and Shapley's KKMS theorem. It is shown that spaces and covers can be much more general and the boundary KKM rules can be substituted by more weaker boundary assumptions.

Generalizations of Tucker-Fan-Shashkin lemmas

Tucker and Ky Fan's lemma are combinatorial analogs of the Borsuk-Ulam theorem (BUT). In 1996, Yu. A. Shashkin proved a version of Fan's lemma, which is a combinatorial analog of the odd mapping theorem (OMT). We consider generalizations of these lemmas for BUT-manifolds, i.e. for manifolds that satisfy BUT. Proofs rely on a generalization of the OMT and on a lemma about the doubling of manifolds with boundaries that are BUT-manifolds.

Circle actions with two fixed points

We prove that if the circle group acts smooth and unitary on 2n-dimensional stably complex manifold with two isolated fixed points and it is not bound equivariantly, then n=1 or 3. Our proof relies on the rigid Hirzebruch genera.

Borsuk - Ulam Type spaces

We consider spaces with free involutions that satisfy the Borsuk - Ulam theorems (BUT-spaces). There are several equivalent definitions for BUT-spaces that can be considered as their properties. Our main technical tool is Yang's cohomological index.

Homotopy invariants of covers and KKM type lemmas

With any (open or closed) cover of a space T we associate certain homotopy classes of maps T into n-spheres. These homotopy invariants can be considered as obstructions for extensions of covers of a subspace A to a space X. We using these obstructions for generalizations of the classic KKM (Knaster-Kuratowski-Mazurkiewicz) and Sperner lemmas. In particular, we show that in the case when A is a k-sphere and X is a (k+1)-disk there exist KKM type lemmas for covers by n+2 sets if and only if the k-homotopy group of n-sphere is not zero.

A survey on the kissing numbers

The maximum possible number of non-overlapping unit spheres that can touch a unit sphere in $n$ dimensions is called kissing number. The problem for finding kissing numbers is closely connected to the more general problems of finding bounds for spherical codes and sphere packings. We survey old and recent results on the kissing numbers keeping the generality of spherical codes.

The Tammes problem for N=14

The Tammes problem is to find the arrangement of N points on a unit sphere which maximizes the minimum distance between any two points. This problem is presently solved for several values of N, namely for N=3,4,6,12 by L. Fejes Toth (1943); for N=5,7,8,9 by Schutte and van der Waerden (1951); for N=10,11 by Danzer (1963) and for N=24 by Robinson (1961). Recently, we solved the Tammes problem for N=13. The optimal configuration of 14 points was conjectured more than 60 years ago. In the paper, we give a solution of this long-standing open problem in geometry. Our computer-assisted proof relies on an enumeration of the irreducible contact graphs.
