Concept of photonic hook scalpel generated by shaped fiber tip with asymmetric radiation

Structured light have made deep impacts on modern biotechnology and clinical practice, with numerous optical systems and lasers currently being used in medicine to treat disease. We demonstrate a new concept of fiber-based optical hook scalpel. The subwavelength photonic hook is obtained in the vicinity of a shaped fiber tip with asymmetric radiation. A 1550 nm continuous-wave source, commonly used for medical imaging, has been required. Photonic hook with a lateral feature size less than the half-wavelength is achieved using a hemispherical shaped fiber tip with metallic mask. This breakthrough is carried out in ambient air by using a 4-μm-diameter fiber with a shaped tip. A good correlation is observed between the computed intensity distribution of photonic hook and the tip sizes. Photonic hook generated with a shaped fiber tip, easier to manipulate, shows far-reaching benefits for potential applications such as ophthalmic laser surgery, super-resolution microscopy, photolithography, and material processing.

Experimental verification of a plasmonic hook in a dielectric Janus particle

We report on a very first experimental observation of a new curved plasmonic beam, a plasmonic hook (PH), for surface plasmon-polariton (SPP) waves. We demonstrate that the SPP PH effect could be realized within a trapezoidal dielectric microstructure with the relative ease of fabrication compared to the generation of the Airy SPP waves which require complex techniques to compensate the wave vectors mismatch. Using numerical analysis, we predicted the PH phenomenon, optimized the microstructure and then confirmed the SPP PH existence via amplitude and phase-resolved scattering scanning near-field optical microscopy at the telecom wavelengths of 1530-1570 nm. The experimental results are in reasonable agreement with our predictions. Importantly, the SPP PH demonstrates the smallest radius of curvature ever recorded for SPP waves compared to that for the Airy-family plasmonic beams providing many useful applications spreading from nanoparticles manipulation toward bio-sensing within a nanoscale.

Overcoming optical contrast limit of mesoscale light focusing by means of retrograde-reflection photonic nanojet

The physical origin of subwavelength photonic nanojet in retrograde-reflection mode (retro-PNJ) is theoretically considered. This specific type of photonic nanojet emerges upon sequential double focusing of a plane optical wave by a transparent dielectric microparticle located near a flat reflecting mirror. For the first time to the best of our knowledge, we report a unique property of retro-PNJ for increasing its focal length and intensity using microparticles with the optical contrast exceeding limiting value (n > 2) that fundamentally distinguishes retro-PNJ from regular PNJ behavior. This may drastically increase the trapping potential of PNJ-based optical tweezers.

Tailoring "photonic hook" from Janus dielectric microbar

A new type of curved subwavelength light beam, a photonic hook (PH), emerged from the diffraction of a light wave at a mesoscale dielectric object with broken internal symmetry (Janus particle) was recently reported. For efficient and technically simpler generation of PHs, we propose a new type of asymmetric Janus microparticles, the orthogonal microbars, composed from materials with different refractive indices. Based on the numerical simulations by means of the Finite Elements Method, we investigate the physical mechanism of PH formation by analyzing the field intensity distribution and the energy fluxes near such particles. The influence of dielectric substrate is also studied for the first time. We show that by changing the refractive index contrast between two parts of Janus bar the shape and curvature of the PHs can be efficiently controlled. The criteria of PH quality for complex characterizing the photonic hook curvature is introduced and discussed as well.

Simulation and experimental observation of tunable photonic nanojet and photonic hook upon asymmetric illumination of a mesoscale cylinder with mask

In this letter, we report on numerical study, fabrication and experimental observations of tunable photonic nanojet and photonic hook. Here, the curved photonic nanojets (photonic hooks) are generated by single mesoscale microcylinder that we fabricated from polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), upon its boundary illumination and adjustable area at an incident wavelength of λ = 405 nm. Experimental observations were conducted for PDMS microcylinder of diameter d = 5 μm deposited on a silicon substrate with the aluminum mask. Measurements were performed with a scanning optical microscope. Our experimental results are in good agreement with numerical predictions performed with the finite-difference time-domain method. The observed the full widths at half-maximum of photonic hooks are 0.48λ, 0.56λ, and 0.76λ for tilt angles of θ = 0°, 5.7°, and 20.1° respectively, at the mask heights of h = 0, 0.25d and 0.5d, respectively, displaying the specificities of the field localization. These photonic hooks have great potential in complex manipulation such as super-resolution imaging, surface fabrication, and optomechanical manipulation in curved trajectories smaller than wavelength.

First experimental observation of plasmonic photonic jet based on dielectric cube

We report on the first experimental demonstration that the microstructure based on a dielectric cuboid combined to a thin metal film can act as an efficient plasmonic lens allowing focusing surface plasmons in a subwavelength scale. By means of numerical simulation of surface plasmon-polariton (SPP) field intensity distributions in the microstructure, we observe a low divergence of plasmonic photonic jet (PPJ) and high intensity subwavelength spots at the communication wavelength of 1530 nm. Then we fabricate an experimental sample of the microstructure and study the SSP field intensity distributions using the amplitude and phase-resolved scanning near-field optical microscopy and demonstrate the experimental observation of the PPJ effect for the SSP waves. Such novel and simple platform can provide new pathways for plasmonics, high-resolution imaging, biophotonics as well as optical data storage.

Photonic hook -- a new type of subwavelength self-bending structured light beams: a tutorial review

During the last 2 years, it was shown that an electromagnetic beam configuration can be bent after propagation through an asymmetrically shaped (Janus) dielectric particle, which adds a new degree of simplicity for generation of a curved light beam. This effect is termed "photonic hook" (PH) and differs from Airy-family beams. PH features the smallest curvature radius of electromagnetic waves ever reported which is about 2 times smaller than the wavelength of the electromagnetic wave. The nature of a photonic hook is a the dispersion of the phase velocity of the waves inside a trapezoid or composed particle, resulting in an interference afterwards.

Super-resonances in microspheres: extreme effects in field localization

We reveal the existence of optical super-resonance modes supported by dielectric microspheres. These modes, with field-intensity enhancement factors on the order of 10^4-10^5, can be directly obtained from analytical calculations. In contrast to usual optical resonances, which are related to the poles of the electric and magnetic scattering amplitudes, super-resonance modes are related to the poles of the internal field coefficients, obtained for specific values of the size parameter. We also reveal the connection of these super-resonances in the generation of magnetic nanojets and of giant magnetic fields in particles with high refractive index.

Acoustical hooks: a new subwavelength self-bending beam

In this work, we report the observation of a new type of near-field curved acoustic beam different from the Airy-family beams both through simulations and experiment. This new self-bending acoustical beam is generate from a rectangular trapezoid of a polymer material immersed in water and has unique features. The radius of curvature of acoustical hook is less than the wavelength, it is represents the smallest radius of curvature ever recorded for any acoustical beams. The origin of this curved beam is in the vortices of intensity flow that appear inside the solid due to the conversion of the incident longitudinal wave mode to a shear wave in a solid. These vortices redirect the intensity flow, which causes the beam to bend. These results may be potentially useful when an object, that is in the path of the beam, must be avoid, such as in cancer treatments in which tumors are found behind bones such as ribs. It could also have potential applications in particle manipulations.

Structured light by discrete-phase orbital angular momentum holograms

Structured light has been created by a myriad of near- and far-field techniques and has found both classical and quantum applications. In the case of orbital angular momentum (OAM), continuous spiral phase patterns in dynamic or geometric phase are often employed with the phase patterns existing across the entire transverse plane. Here we exploit the uncertainty relation between OAM and angle to create structured OAM fields using multilevel OAM holograms. We show theoretically and experimentally that only a multilevel angular phase contour in the near-field is needed to create structured OAM light in the far-field, exploiting the reciprocal nature of angular momentum and angle. We use this approach to demonstrate exotic 3D structured light control to show the evolution of the Poynting vector in such fields and to highlight the physics underlying this phenomenon.

Experimental observation of a photonic hook

In this letter, we report the first experimental observation of a photonic hook - a new type of near field curved light generated at the output of dielectric cuboid with broken symmetry having dimensions comparable to the electromagnetic wavelength. The radius of curvature associated with the generated photonic hook is smaller than the wavelength used while its minimum beam-waist is about 0.44 lamda. This represents the smallest radius of curvature ever recorded for any alectromagnetic beams.

Photonic hook plasmons: a new curved surface wave

It ia well-known that surface plasmon wave propagates along a straight line, but this common sense was broken by the artificial curved light - plasmon Airy beam. In this paper we introduce a new class of curved surface plasmon wave - the photonic hook plasmon. It propagates along wavelength scaled curved trajectory with radius less than surface plasmon polariton wavelength, and can exist despite the strong energy dissipation at the metal surface.

Photonic hook: A new curved light beam

It is well-known that electromagnetic radiation propagates along a straight line, but this common sense was broken by the artificial curved light - Airy beam. In this paper, we demonstrate a new type of curved light beam besides Airy beam, so called photonic hook. This photonic hook is a curved high-intensity focus by a dielectric trapezoid particle illuminated by a plane wave. The difference of the phase velocity and the interference of the waves inside the particle cause the phenomenon of focus bending.
