Transmission statistics in nonconservative disordered optical medium

We determine the cumulants of electromagnetic energy transmitted through one-dimensional disordered medium with absorption or amplification. For this purpose we derive the Keldysh nonlinear sigma-model action with a source term that generates the energy current fluctuations. The fluctuations over the ensemble of disorder realizations are found to decrease (increase) with increasing absorption (amplification). In the conservative medium the fluctuations can be related to the Dorokhov's distribution of transmission coefficients.

Nonlinear sigma model for optical media with linear absorption or gain

In the framework of the Keldysh technique, we formulate the nonlinear sigma model for disordered optical media with linear absorption or gain. The effective action for fluctuations of the matrix field about the saddle point acquires an extra term due to the nonconservative nature of the system. We determine the disorder-averaged Green-function correlator, which has a diffusion pole modified by a finite absorption/gain rate. The diffusion coefficient is found to be close to its value for conservative systems in the relevant range of parameters. In the medium with gain, the random-lasing threshold depends on the sample size.

Gas lasers with wave-chaotic resonators

Semiclassical multimode laser theory is extended to gas lasers with open two-dimensional resonators of arbitrary shape. The Doppler frequency shift of the linear-gain coefficient leads to an additional linear coupling between the modes, which, however, is shown to be negligible. The nonlinear laser equations simplify in the special case of wave-chaotic resonators. In the single-mode regime, the intensity of a chaotic laser, as a function of the mode frequency, displays a local minimum at the frequency of the atomic transition. The width of the minimum scales with the inhomogeneous linewidth, in contrast to the Lamb dip in uniaxial resonators whose width is given by the homogeneous linewidth.

Diagrammatic semiclassical laser theory

We derive semiclassical laser equations valid in all orders of nonlinearity. With the help of a diagrammatic representation, the perturbation series in powers of electric field can be resummed in terms of a certain class of diagrams. The resummation makes it possible to take into account a weak effect of population pulsations in a controlled way, while treating the nonlinearity exactly. The proposed laser theory reproduces the all-order nonlinear equations in the approximation of constant population inversion and the third-order equations with population-pulsation terms, as special cases. The theory can be applied to arbitrarily open and irregular lasers, such as random lasers.

Recent developments in the theory of multimode random lasers

We review recent extensions of semiclassical multimode laser theory to open systems with overlapping resonances and inhomogeneous refractive index. An essential ingredient of the theory are biorthogonal quasimodes that describe field decay in an open passive system and are used as a basis for lasing modes. We discuss applications of the semiclassical theory, as well as other experimental and numerical results related to random lasing with mode competition.

Statistical properties of one-dimensional random lasers

Statistical properties of a laser based on a one-dimensional disordered superlattice open at one side are studied numerically. The passive normal modes of the system are determined using the Feshbach projection technique. It is found that the mode competition due to the spacial hole burning leads to a saturation of the number of lasing modes with increasing pump rate. It is also responsible for nonmonotonic dependence of intensities of lasing modes as functions of pumping. Computed distributions of spectral spacing and intensity statistics are in qualitative agreement with experimental results.

Spacing statistics in two-mode random lasing

The distribution of spacings between the lasing frequencies for an ensemble of random lasers in the two-mode regime was computed. The random lasers are implemented as open chaotic cavities filled with an active medium. The spectral properties of the passive cavities are modeled with non-Hermitian random matrices. The spacing distribution is found to depend on the relation between the gain-profile width and the mean spacing of the passive-cavity modes. The distribution displays mode repulsion and, under certain conditions, agrees with the Wigner surmise. The role of mode competition is discussed.

Mode statistics in random lasers

Representing an ensemble of random lasers with an ensemble of random matrices, we compute average number of lasing modes and its fluctuations. The regimes of weak and strong coupling of the passive resonator to environment are considered. In the latter case, contrary to an earlier claim in the literature, we do not find a power-law dependence of the average mode number on the pump strength. For the relative fluctuations, however, a power law can be established. It is shown that, due to the mode competition, the distribution of the number of excited modes over an ensemble of lasers is not binomial.

Semiclassical theory in Andreev billiards: beyond the diagonal approximation

Recently semiclassical approximations have been successfully applied to study the effect of a superconducting lead on the density of states and conductance in ballistic billiards. However, the summation over classical trajectories involved in such theories was carried out using the intuitive picture of Andreev reflection rather than the semiclassical reasoning. We propose a method to calculate the semiclassical sums which allows us to go beyond the diagonal approximation in these problems. In particular, we address the question of whether the off-diagonal corrections could explain the gap in the density of states of a chaotic Andreev billiard.

Semiclassical theory of weak antilocalization and spin relaxation in ballistic quantum dots

We develop a semiclassical theory for spin-dependent quantum transport in ballistic quantum dots. The theory is based on the semiclassical Landauer formula, that we generalize to include spin-orbit and Zeeman interaction. Within this approach, the orbital degrees of freedom are treated semiclassically, while the spin dynamics is computed quantum mechanically. Employing this method, we calculate the quantum correction to the conductance in quantum dots with Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interaction. We find a strong sensitivity of the quantum correction to the underlying classical dynamics of the system. In particular, a suppression of weak antilocalization in integrable systems is observed. These results are attributed to the qualitatively different types of spin relaxation in integrable and chaotic quantum cavities.

The role of orbital dynamics in spin relaxation and weak antilocalization in quantum dots

We develop a semiclassical theory for spin-dependent quantum transport to describe weak (anti)localization in quantum dots with spin-orbit coupling. This allows us to distinguish different types of spin relaxation in systems with chaotic, regular, and diffusive orbital classical dynamics. We find, in particular, that for typical Rashba spin-orbit coupling strengths, integrable ballistic systems can exhibit weak localization, while corresponding chaotic systems show weak antilocalization. We further calculate the magnetoconductance and analyze how the weak antilocalization is suppressed with decreasing quantum dot size and increasing additional in-plane magnetic field.

Semiclassical theory of spin-orbit interaction in the extended phase space

We consider the semiclassical theory in a joint phase space of spin and orbital degrees of freedom. The method is developed from the path integrals using the spin-coherent-state representation, and yields the trace formula for the density of states. We discuss special cases, such as weak and strong spin-orbit coupling, and relate the present theory to the earlier approaches.

Semiclassical surface of section perturbation theory

We derive analytic expressions for the wavefunctions and energy levels in the semiclassical approximation for perturbed integrable systems. We find that some eigenstates of such systems are substantially different from any of the unperturbed states, which requires some sort of a resonant perturbation theory. We utilize the semiclassical surface of section method by Bogomolny that reduces the spatial dimensions of the problem by one. Among the systems considered are the circular billiard with a perturbed boundary, including the short stadium; the perturbed rectangular billiard, including the tilted square and the square in magnetic field; the bouncing ball states in the stadium and slanted stadium; and the whispering gallery modes. The surface of section perturbation theory is compared with the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, which is an alternative way to describe some classes of states in these systems. We discuss the derivation of the trace formulas from Bogomolny's transfer operator for the chaotic, integrable, and almost integrable systems.

Quantum Spectra and Wave Functions in Terms of Periodic Orbits for Weakly Chaotic Systems

Special quantum states exist which are quasiclassical quantizations of regions of phase space that are weakly chaotic. In a weakly chaotic region, the orbits are quite regular and remain in the region for some time before escaping and manifesting possible chaotic behavior. Such phase space regions are characterized as being close to periodic orbits of an integrable reference system. The states are often rather striking, and can be concentrated in spatial regions. This leads to possible phenomena. We review some methods we have introduced to characterize such regions and find analytic formulas for the special states and their energies.

Quasiclassical Born-Oppenheimer approximations

We discuss several problems in quasiclassical physics for which approximate solutions were recently obtained by a new method, and which can also be solved by novel versions of the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. These cases include the so-called bouncing ball modes, low angular momentum states in perturbed circular billiards, resonant states in perturbed rectangular billiards, and whispering gallery modes. Some rare, special eigenstates, concentrated close to the edge or along a diagonal of a nearly rectangular billiard are found. This kind of state has apparently previously escaped notice.

Square billiard with a magnetic flux

Eigenstates and energy levels of a square quantum billiard in a magnetic field, or with an Aharonov-Bohm flux line, are found in quasiclassical approximation, that is, for high enough energy. Explicit formulas for the energy levels and wavefunctions are found. A number of interesting states are shown, together with their wavefunctions. Some states are diamagnetic, others paramagnetic, still others both dia- and paramagnetic. Some states are strongly localized. Related systems and possible experiments are briefly mentioned.

Localization by interference: Square billiard with a magnetic flux

Eigenstates and energy levels of a square quantum billiard in a magnetic field, or with an Aharonov-Bohm flux line, are found in quasiclassical approximation, that is, for high enough energy. Explicit formulas for the energy levels and wavefunctions are found. There are localized states, never before noticed in this well studied problem, whose localization is due to phase interference, even though there is no or negligible classical effect of the magnetic field. These and related states account almost entirely for the magnetic response in certain temperature ranges, and thus have a bearing on the experiments of Levy et al.
