Synchronization cluster bursting in adaptive oscillators networks

Adaptive dynamical networks are ubiquitous in real-world systems. This paper aims to explore the synchronization dynamics in networks of adaptive oscillators based on a paradigmatic system of adaptively coupled phase oscillators. Our numerical observations reveal the emergence of synchronization cluster bursting, characterized by periodic transitions between cluster synchronization and global synchronization. By investigating a reduced model, the mechanisms underlying synchronization cluster bursting are clarified. We show that a minimal model exhibiting this phenomenon can be reduced to a phase oscillator with complex-valued adaptation. Furthermore, the adaptivity of the system leads to the appearance of additional symmetries and thus to the coexistence of stable bursting solutions with very different Kuramoto order parameters.

Time-reversible dynamics in a system of two coupled active rotators

We study two coupled active rotators with Kuramoto-type coupling and focus our attention to specific transitional regimes where the coupling is neither attractive nor repulsive. We show that certain such situations at the edge of synchronization can be characterized by the existence of a time-reversal symmetry of the system. We identify two different cases with such a time-reversal symmetry. The first case is characterized by a non-reciprocal attractive/repulsive coupling. The second case is a reciprocal coupling exactly at the edge between attraction and repulsion. We give a detailed description of possible different types of dynamics and bifurcations for both cases. In particular, we show how the time-reversible coupling can induce both oscillation death and oscillation birth to the active rotators. Moreover, we analyse the coexistence of conservative and dissipative regions in phase space, which is a typical feature of systems with a time-reversal symmetry. We show also, how perturbations breaking the time-reversal symmetry and destroying the conservative regions can lead to complicated types of dissipative dynamics such as the emergence of long-period cycles showing a bursting-like behavior.

Symmetry breaking yields chimeras in two small populations of Kuramoto-type oscillators

Despite their simplicity, networks of coupled phase oscillators can give rise to intriguing collective dynamical phenomena. However, the symmetries of globally and identically coupled identical units do not allow solutions where distinct oscillators are frequency-unlocked -- a necessary condition for the emergence of chimeras. Thus, forced symmetry breaking is necessary to observe chimera-type solutions. Here, we consider the bifurcations that arise when full permutational symmetry is broken for the network to consist of coupled populations. We consider the smallest possible network composed of four phase oscillators and elucidate the phase space structure, (partial) integrability for some parameter values, and how the bifurcations away from full symmetry lead to frequency-unlocked weak chimera solutions. Since such solutions wind around a torus they must arise in a global bifurcation scenario. Moreover, periodic weak chimeras undergo a period doubling cascade leading to chaos. The resulting chaotic dynamics with distinct frequencies do not rely on amplitude variation and arise in the smallest networks that support chaos.

Identical phase oscillator networks: bifurcations, symmetry and reversibility for generalized coupling

For a system of coupled identical phase oscillators with full permutation symmetry, any broken symmetries in dynamical behaviour must come from spontaneous symmetry breaking, i.e. from the nonlinear dynamics of the system. The dynamics of phase differences for such a system depends only on the coupling (phase interaction) function $g(φ)$ and the number of oscillators $N$. This paper briefly reviews some results for such systems in the case of general coupling $g$ before exploring two cases in detail: (a) general two harmonic form: $g(φ)=q\sin(φ-α)+r\sin(2φ-β)$ and $N$ small (b) the coupling $g$ is odd or even. We extend previously published bifurcation analyses to the general two harmonic case, and show for even $g$ that the dynamics of phase differences has a number of time-reversal symmetries. For the case of even $g$ with one harmonic it is known the system has $N-2$ constants of the motion. This is true for $N=4$ and any $g$, while for $N=4$ and more than two harmonics in $g$, we show the system must have fewer independent constants of the motion.

Weak chimeras in minimal networks of coupled phase oscillators

We suggest a definition for a type of chimera state that appears in networks of indistinguishable phase oscillators. Defining a "weak chimera" as a type of invariant set showing partial frequency synchronization, we show that this means they cannot appear in phase oscillator networks that are either globally coupled or too small. We exhibit various networks of four, six and ten indistinguishable oscillators where weak chimeras exist with various dynamics and stabilities. We examine the role of Kuramoto-Sakaguchi coupling in giving degenerate (neutrally stable) families of weak chimera states in these example networks.

Desynchronization transitions in nonlinearly coupled phase oscillators

We consider the nonlinear extension of the Kuramoto model of globally coupled phase oscillators where the phase shift in the coupling function depends on the order parameter. A bifurcation analysis of the transition from fully synchronous state to partial synchrony is performed. We demonstrate that for small ensembles it is typically mediated by stable cluster states, that disappear with creation of heteroclinic cycles, while for a larger number of oscillators a direct transition from full synchrony to a periodic or quasiperiodic regime occurs.
