Boundary criticality in the Gross-Neveu-Yukawa model at higher orders

We extend the study of boundary criticality in the Gross-Neveu-Yukawa universality class beyond leading order. Using the hyperbolic space formulation of boundary conformal field theories, we compute the first subleading corrections at large $N$ to the free energies of the ``normal", ``ordinary" and ``special" boundary universality classes. We also determine the order $1/N$ correction to the dimension of the boundary fermion at the normal fixed point. In the Gross-Neveu-Yukawa theory in $d=4-ε$, we perform a higher-order analysis of the boundary free energy, and use it to extract estimates for the boundary central charge in $d=3$. The large $N$ and $ε$-expansion results are shown to be precisely consistent in overlapping regimes, providing nontrivial consistency checks for the identification of the boundary universality classes. Our calculations rely on a combination of AdS harmonic analysis and boundary conformal field theory techniques.

Extraordinary Surface Criticalities for Interacting Fermions

Interacting fermions exhibit a rich landscape of surface defects and associated critical phenomena. We investigate novel surface critical behavior in the three-dimensional Gross-Neveu-Yukawa model. For a class of defect renormalization group flows, we obtain exact infrared solutions and show how fermionic anomalies are encoded in the resulting surface dynamics. We further uncover emergent topological and geometric structures in the defect coupling space, and comment on their relation to a defect analogue of the CFT distance conjecture.

$\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric Field Theories at Finite Temperature

We investigate the thermal properties of $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric scalar field theories with purely imaginary couplings. The free energy governs the asymptotic density of states, providing an effective measure of the number of degrees of freedom, while thermal masses and one-point functions provide predictions for operator dimensions and three-point functions in the corresponding $d=2$ Conformal Field Theories. Naive finite-temperature perturbation theory near upper critical dimensions is spoiled by infrared divergences. To remove these divergences, we introduce a ''thermal normal-ordering'' scheme that resums these contributions and yields a systematic $ε$-expansion. This framework allows us to compute the free energy, thermal masses, and one-point functions in the cubic and quintic $O(N)$ models. We compare the thermal free energy density, thermal masses, and one-point function in two dimensions with exact results derived from the proposed Ginzburg-Landau descriptions of the non-unitary minimal models $M(2,5)$ and $M(3,8)_D$. Eventually, we employ two-sided Padé extrapolations to obtain estimates for the thermal free energy in $d=3,4,5$.

Gauging Non-Invertible Symmetries: Topological Interfaces and Generalized Orbifold Groupoid in 2d QFT

Gauging is a powerful operation on symmetries in quantum field theory (QFT), as it connects distinct theories and also reveals hidden structures in a given theory. We initiate a systematic investigation of gauging discrete generalized symmetries in two-dimensional QFT. Such symmetries are described by topological defect lines (TDLs) which obey fusion rules that are non-invertible in general. Despite this seemingly exotic feature, all well-known properties in gauging invertible symmetries carry over to this general setting, which greatly enhances both the scope and the power of gauging. This is established by formulating generalized gauging in terms of topological interfaces between QFTs, which explains the physical picture for the mathematical concept of algebra objects and associated module categories over fusion categories that encapsulate the algebraic properties of generalized symmetries and their gaugings. This perspective also provides simple physical derivations of well-known mathematical theorems in category theory from basic axiomatic properties of QFT in the presence of such interfaces. We discuss a bootstrap-type analysis to classify such topological interfaces and thus the possible generalized gaugings and demonstrate the procedure in concrete examples of fusion categories. Moreover we present a number of examples to illustrate generalized gauging and its properties in concrete conformal field theories (CFTs). In particular, we identify the generalized orbifold groupoid that captures the structure of fusion between topological interfaces (equivalently sequential gaugings) as well as a plethora of new self-dualities in CFTs under generalized gaugings.

Defect Fusion and Casimir Energy in Higher Dimensions

We study the operator algebra of extended conformal defects in more than two spacetime dimensions. Such algebra structure encodes the combined effect of multiple impurities on physical observables at long distances as well as the interactions among the impurities. These features are formalized by a fusion product which we define for a pair of defects, after isolating divergences that capture the effective potential between the defects, which generalizes the usual Casimir energy. We discuss general properties of the corresponding fusion algebra and contrast with the more familiar cases that involve topological defects. We also describe the relation to a different defect setup in the shape of a wedge. We provide explicit examples to illustrate these properties using line defects and interfaces in the Wilson-Fisher CFT and the Gross-Neveu(-Yukawa) CFT and determine the defect fusion data thereof.

Surprises in the Ordinary: $O(N)$ Invariant Surface Defect in the $ε$-expansion

We study an $O(N)$ invariant surface defect in the Wilson-Fisher conformal field theory (CFT) in $d=4-ε$ dimensions. This defect is defined by mass deformation on a two-dimensional surface that generates localized disorder and is conjectured to factorize into a pair of ordinary boundary conditions in $d=3$. We determine defect CFT data associated with the lightest $O(N)$ singlet and vector operators up to the third order in the $ε$-expansion, find agreements with results from numerical methods and provide support for the factorization proposal in $d=3$. Along the way, we observe surprising non-renormalization properties for surface anomalous dimensions and operator-product-expansion coefficients in the $ε$-expansion. We also analyze the full conformal anomalies for the surface defect.

Effective Field Theory of Conformal Boundaries

We introduce an effective field theory (EFT) for conformal impurity by considering a pair of transversely displaced impurities and integrating out modes with mass inversely proportional to the separation distance. This EFT captures the universal signature of the impurity seen by a heavy local operator. We focus on the case of conformal boundaries and derive universal formulas from this EFT for the boundary structure constants at high energy. We point out that the more familiar thermal EFT for conformal field theory is a special case of this EFT with distinguished conformal boundaries. We also derive, for general conformal impurities, non-positivity and convexity-like constraints on the Casimir energy which determines the leading EFT coefficient.

Beyond $N=\infty$ in Large $N$ Conformal Vector Models at Finite Temperature

We investigate finite-temperature observables in three-dimensional large $N$ critical vector models taking into account the effects suppressed by $1\over N$. Such subleading contributions are captured by the fluctuations of the Hubbard-Stratonovich auxiliary field which need to be handled with care due to a subtle divergence structure which we clarify. The examples we consider include the scalar $O(N)$ model, the Gross-Neveu model, the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model and the massless Chern-Simons Quantum Electrodynamics. We present explicit results for the free energy density to the subleading order in $1\over N$, which captures the thermal one-point function of the stress-energy tensor to this order. We also include the dependence on a chemical potential. We determine the Wilson coefficient in the thermal effective action that is sensitive to global symmetry for the first time directly in interacting CFTs, which produces a symmetry-resolved asymptotic density of states. We further provide a formula from diagrammatics for the one-point functions of general single-trace higher-spin currents. We observe that in most cases considered, these subleading effects lift the apparent degeneracies between observables in different models at infinite $N$, while in special cases the discrepancies only start to appear at the next-to-subleading order.

Massive quantum scalar field theory in the presence of moving mirrors

We study the 2D massive fields in the presence of moving mirrors. We do that for standing mirror and mirror moving with constant velocity. We calculate the modes and commutation relations of the field operator with the corresponding conjugate momentum in each case. We find that in case of the ideal mirror, which reflects modes with all momenta equally well, the commutation relations do not have their canonical form. However, in the case of non-ideal mirror, which is transparent for the modes with high enough momenta, the commutation relations of the field operator and its conjugate momentum have their canonical form. Then we calculate the free Hamiltonian and the expectation value of the stress-energy tensor in all the listed situations. In the presence of moving mirrors the diagonal form in terms of the creation and annihilation operators has the operator that performs translations along the mirror's world line rather than the one which does translations along the time-line. For the massive fields in the presence of a mirror moving with constant velocity the expectation value of the stress-energy tensor has a non-diagonal contribution which decays with the distance from the mirror.
