Mobile impurity in a one-dimensional gas at finite temperatures

We consider the McGuire model of a one-dimensional gas of free fermions interacting with a single impurity. We compute the static one-body function and momentum distribution of the impurity at finite temperatures. The results involve averages over Fredholm determinants that we further analyse using the effective form factors approach. With this approach, we derive the large-distance behaviour of the one-body function, which takes the form of an averaged exponential decay. This method allows us to study an experimentally important regime of small momenta of the impurity's momentum distribution. We also consider the one-body function at short distances and compute finite temperature Tan's contact.

On the Dynamics of Free-Fermionic Tau-Functions at Finite Temperature

In this work we explore an instance of the $τ$-function of vertex type operators, specified in terms of a constant phase shift in a free-fermionic basis. From the physical point of view this $τ$-function has multiple interpretations: as a correlator of Jordan-Wigner strings, a Loschmidt Echo in the Aharonov-Bohm effect, or the generating function of the local densities in the Tonks-Girardeau gas. We present the $τ$-function as a form-factors series and tackle it from four vantage points: (i) we perform an exact summation and express it in terms of a Fredholm determinant in the thermodynamic limit, (ii) we use bosonization techniques to perform partial summations of soft modes around the Fermi surface to acquire the scaling at zero temperature, (iii) we derive large space and time asymptotic behavior for the thermal Fredholm determinant by relating it to effective form-factors with an asymptotically similar kernel, and (iv) we identify and sum the important basis elements directly through a tailor-made numerical algorithm for finite-entropy states in a free-fermionic Hilbert space. All methods confirm each other. We find that, in addition to the exponential decay in the finite-temperature case the dynamic correlation functions exhibit an extra power law in time, universal over any distribution and time scale.

Mobile impurity in a one-dimensional quantum gas: Exact diagonalization in the Bethe Ansatz basis

We consider a mobile impurity particle injected into a one-dimensional quantum gas. The time evolution of the system strongly depends on whether the mass of the impurity and the masses of the host particles are equal or not. For equal masses, the model is Bethe Ansatz solvable, but for unequal masses, the model is no longer integrable and the Bethe Ansatz technique breaks down. We construct a controllable numerical method of computing the spectrum of the model with a finite number of host particles, based on exact diagonalization of the Hamiltonian in the truncated basis of the Bethe Ansatz states. We illustrate our approach on a few-body system of 5+1 particles, and trace the evolution of the spectrum depending on the mass ratio of the impurity and the host particles.

Large time and long distance asymptotics of the thermal correlators of the impenetrable anyonic lattice gas

We study thermal correlation functions of the one-dimensional impenetrable lattice anyons. These correlation functions can be presented as a difference of two Fredholm determinants. To describe large time and long distance behavior of these objects we use effective form factor approach. The asymptotic behavior is different in the space-like and time-like regions. In particular, in the time-like region we observe the additional power factor on top of the exponential decay. We argue that this result is universal as it is related to the discontinuous behavior of the phase shift function of the effective fermions. At particular values of the anyonic parameter we recover asymptotics of spin-spin correlation functions in XXO quantum chain.

Semi-classical quantisation of magnetic solitons in the anisotropic Heisenberg quantum chain

Using the algebro-geometric approach, we study the structure of semi-classical eigenstates in a weakly-anisotropic quantum Heisenberg spin chain. We outline how classical nonlinear spin waves governed by the anisotropic Landau-Lifshitz equation arise as coherent macroscopic low-energy fluctuations of the ferromagnetic ground state. Special emphasis is devoted to the simplest types of solutions, describing precessional motion and elliptic magnetisation waves. The internal magnon structure of classical spin waves is resolved by performing the semi-classical quantisation using the Riemann-Hilbert problem approach. We present an expression for the overlap of two semi-classical eigenstates and discuss how correlation functions at the semi-classical level arise from classical phase-space averaging.

Nonequilibrium phase transition in transport through a driven quantum point contact

We study transport of noninteracting fermions through a periodically driven quantum point contact (QPC) connecting two tight-binding chains. Initially, each chain is prepared in its own equilibrium state, generally with a bias in chemical potentials and temperatures. We examine the heating rate (or, alternatively, energy increase per cycle) in the nonequilibrium time-periodic steady state established after initial transient dynamics. We find that the heating rate vanishes identically when the driving frequency exceeds the bandwidth of the chain. We first establish this fact for a particular type of QPC where the heating rate can be calculated analytically. Then we verify numerically that this nonequilibrium phase transition is present for a generic QPC. Finally, we derive this effect perturbatively in leading order for cases when the QPC Hamiltonian can be considered as a small perturbation. Strikingly, we discover that for certain QPCs the current averaged over the driving cycle also vanishes above the critical frequency, despite a persistent bias. This shows that a driven QPC can act as a frequency-controlled quantum switch.

A map between time-dependent and time-independent quantum many-body Hamiltonians

Given a time-independent Hamiltonian $\widetilde H$, one can construct a time-dependent Hamiltonian $H_t$ by means of the gauge transformation $H_t=U_t \widetilde H \, U^\dagger_t-i\, U_t\, \partial_t U_t^\dagger$. Here $U_t$ is the unitary transformation that relates the solutions of the corresponding Schrodinger equations. In the many-body case one is usually interested in Hamiltonians with few-body (often, at most two-body) interactions. We refer to such Hamiltonians as "physical". We formulate sufficient conditions on $U_t$ ensuring that $H_t$ is physical as long as $\widetilde H$ is physical (and vice versa). This way we obtain a general method for finding such pairs of physical Hamiltonians $H_t$, $\widetilde H$ that the driven many-body dynamics governed by $H_t$ can be reduced to the quench dynamics due to the time-independent $\widetilde H$. We apply this method to a number of many-body systems. First we review the mapping of a spin system with isotropic Heisenberg interaction and arbitrary time-dependent magnetic field to the time-independent system without a magnetic field [F. Yan, L. Yang, B. Li, Phys. Lett. A 251, 289 (1999); Phys. Lett. A 259, 207 (1999)]. Then we demonstrate that essentially the same gauge transformation eliminates an arbitrary time-dependent magnetic field from a system of interacting fermions. Further, we apply the method to the quantum Ising spin system and a spin coupled to a bosonic environment. We also discuss a more general situation where $\widetilde H = \widetilde H_t$ is time-dependent but dynamically integrable.

Solitary wave propagation in media with step-like inhomogeneities

We consider the wave propagation in media with step-like inhomogeneities. We choose two different protocols: (I) a step-like spatial dependence of the coupling constant that physically corresponds to the junction of two systems and (II) the step-like time-dependence of the coupling constant that corresponds to a quench protocol. In both scenarios, we study the propagation of the solitary wave in $φ^4$ and the sine-Gordon model. Due to topological protection, the solitary wave retains its form. This allows us to give model-independent predictions about its final velocity, which can be interpreted as the "hyperbolic" Snell's law.

Zero temperature momentum distribution of an impurity in a polaron state of one-dimensional Fermi and Tonks-Girardeau gases

We investigate the momentum distribution function of a single distinguishable impurity particle which formed a polaron state in a gas of either free fermions or Tonks-Girardeau bosons in one spatial dimension. We obtain a Fredholm determinant representation of the distribution function for the Bethe ansatz solvable model of an impurity-gas $δ$-function interaction potential at zero temperature, in both repulsive and attractive regimes. We deduce from this representation the fourth power decay at a large momentum, and a weakly divergent (quasi-condensate) peak at a finite momentum. We also demonstrate that the momentum distribution function in the limiting case of infinitely strong interaction can be expressed through a correlation function of the one-dimensional impenetrable anyons.

Fredholm determinants, full counting statistics and Loschmidt echo for domain wall profiles in one-dimensional free fermionic chains

We consider an integrable system of two one-dimensional fermionic chains connected by a link. The hopping constant at the link can be different from that in the bulk. Starting from an initial state in which the left chain is populated while the right is empty, we present time-dependent full counting statistics and the Loschmidt echo in terms of Fredholm determinants. Using this exact representation, we compute the above quantities as well as the current through the link, the shot noise and the entanglement entropy in the large time limit. We find that the physics is strongly affected by the value of the hopping constant at the link. If it is smaller than the hopping constant in the bulk, then a local steady state is established at the link, while in the opposite case all physical quantities studied experience persistent oscillations. In the latter case the frequency of the oscillations is determined by the energy of the bound state and, for the Loschmidt echo, by the bias of chemical potentials.

Domain wall dynamics in the Landau--Lifshitz magnet and the classical-quantum correspondence for spin transport

We investigate the dynamics of spin in the axially anisotropic Landau--Lifshitz field theory with a magnetic domain wall initial condition. Employing the analytic scattering technique, we obtain the exact scattering data and reconstruct the time-evolved profile. We identify three qualitatively distinct regimes of spin transport, ranging from ballistic expansion in the easy-plane regime, absence of transport in the easy-axis regime and log-modified diffusion for the isotropic interaction. Our results are in perfect qualitative agreement with those found in the anisotropic quantum Heisenberg spin-$1/2$ chain, indicating a remarkable classical-quantum correspondence for macroscopic spin transport.

Interplay of Solitons and Radiation in One-Dimensional Bose Gases

We study relaxation dynamics in one-dimensional Bose gases, formulated as an initial value problem for the classical non-linear Schrödinger equation. We propose an analytic technique which takes into account the exact spectrum of non-linear modes, that is both soliton excitations and dispersive continuum of radiation modes. Our method relies on the exact large-time asymptotics and uses the so-called dressing transformation to account for the solitons. The obtained results are quantitatively compared with the predictions of the linearized approach in the framework of the Bogoliubov--de Gennes theory. In the attractive regime, the interplay between solitons and radiation yields a damped oscillatory motion of the profile which resembles breathing. For the repulsive interaction, the solitons are confined in the sound cone region separated from the supersonic radiation.

Necessary and sufficient condition for quantum adiabaticity in a driven one-dimensional impurity-fluid system

We study under what conditions the quantum adiabaticity is maintained in a closed many-body system consisting of a one-dimensional fluid and an impurity particle dragged through the latter by an external force. We employ an effective theory describing the low-energy sector of the system to derive the time dependence of the adiabaticity figure of merit -- the adiabatic fidelity. We find that in order to maintain adiabaticity in a large system the external force, $F_N$, should vanish with the system size, $N$, as $1/N$ or faster. This improves the necessary adiabatic condition $F_N=O(1/\log N)$ obtained for this system earlier [AIP Conf. Proc. 1936, 020024 (2018)]. Experimental implications of this result and its relation to the quasi-Bloch oscillations of the impurity are discussed.

The impact of the injection protocol on an impurity's stationary state

We examine stationary state properties of an impurity particle injected into a one-dimensional quantum gas. We show that the value of the impurity's end velocity lies between zero and the speed of sound in the gas, and is determined by the injection protocol. This way, the impurity's constant motion is a dynamically emergent phenomenon whose description goes beyond accounting for the kinematic constraints of Landau approach to superfluidity. We provide exact analytic results in the thermodynamic limit, and perform finite-size numerical simulations to demonstrate that the predicted phenomena are within the reach of the existing ultracold gases experiments.

Two-terminal transport along a proximity induced superconducting quantum Hall edge

We study electric transport along an integer quantum Hall edge where the proximity effect is induced due to a coupling to a superconductor. Such an edge exhibits two Majorana-Weyl fermions with different group velocities set by the induced superconducting pairing. We show that this structure of the spectrum results in interference fringes that can be observed in both the two-terminal conductance and shot noise. We develop a complete analytical theory of such fringes for an arbitrary smooth profile of the induced pairing.

Quantum Many-Body Adiabaticity, Topological Thouless Pump and Driven Impurity in a One-Dimensional Quantum Fluid

When it comes to applying the adiabatic theorem in practice, the key question to be answered is how slow "slowly enough" is. This question can be an intricate one, especially for many-body systems, where the limits of slow driving and large system size may not commute. Recently we have shown how the quantum adiabaticity in many-body systems is related to the generalized orthogonality catastrophe [Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 200401 (2017)]. We have proven a rigorous inequality relating these two phenomena and applied it to establish conditions for the quantized transport in the topological Thouless pump. In the present contribution we (i) review these developments and (ii) apply the inequality to establish the conditions for adiabaticity in a one-dimensional system consisting of a quantum fluid and an impurity particle pulled through the fluid by an external force. The latter analysis is vital for the correct quantitative description of the phenomenon of quasi Bloch oscillations in a one-dimensional translation invariant impurity-fluid system.
