The Fermi surface of RuO2 measured by quantum oscillations

The metallic oxide RuO$_2$ has emerged as a promising altermagnet candidate, owing to reports of this material hosting antiferromagnetic ordering accompanied by a spin-split electronic band structure characteristic of time-reversal symmetry-breaking. However, recent studies have robustly questioned this scenario. Here we map the Fermi surface of pristine single-crystalline RuO$_2$. By measuring magnetic quantum oscillations of a bulk thermodynamic property, our study resolves the electronic structure present in the bulk of RuO$_2$. Several Fermi sheets are discerned, with a range of effective quasiparticle masses up to five times that of the bare electron mass. We compare our measurements with the predictions for altermagnetic and nonmagnetic Fermi surfaces deduced from density functional theory calculations. The quantum oscillatory frequency spectra correspond very poorly to the profile expected for the case of altermagnetism; by contrast, they correspond well to the nonmagnetic scenario. Our findings place significant constraints on the bulk magnetic properties of RuO$_2$, and strongly suggest that this material is a paramagnet.

From orbital to paramagnetic pair breaking in layered superconductor 2H-NbS$_2$

The superconducting transition metal dichalcogenides 2H-NbSe$_2$ and 2H-NbS$_2$ are intensively studied on account of their unique electronic properties such as Ising superconductivity, found in multi- and monolayers, with upper critical fields beyond the Pauli limit. Even in bulk crystals, there are reports of multiband superconductivity and exotic states, such as the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phase. In this work, we investigate the superconducting properties of 2H-NbS$_2$ through a detailed high-field mapping of the phase diagram by means of magnetotransport and magnetostriction experiments. We compare the phase diagram between bulk crystals and a 6~nm thick flake of 2H-NbS$_2$ and find a drastically enhanced Maki parameter in the flake, signifying a change of the relevant pair breaking mechanism from orbital to paramagnetic pair breaking, which we attribute to an effect of enhanced spin-orbit coupling.

Quantum Hall effect in a CVD-grown oxide

Two-dimensional electron systems (2DES) are promising for investigating correlated quantum phenomena. In particular, 2D oxides provide a platform that can host various quantum phases such as quantized Hall effect, superconductivity, or magnetism. The realization of such quantum phases in 2D oxides heavily relies on dedicated heterostructure growths. Here we show the integer quantum Hall effect achieved in chemical vapor deposition grown Bi2O2Se - a representative member of a more accessible oxide family. A single or few sub-band 2DES can be prepared in thin films of Bi2O2Se, where the film thickness acts as the sole design parameter and the sub-band occupation is determined by the electric field effect. This new oxide platform exhibits characteristic advantages in structural flexibility due to its layered nature, making it suitable for scalable growth. The unique small mass distinguishes Bi2O2Se from other high-mobility oxides, providing a new platform for exploring quantum Hall physics in 2D oxides.

Nano-ARPES investigation of twisted bilayer tungsten disulfide

The diverse and intriguing phenomena observed in twisted bilayer systems, such as graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides, prompted new questions about the emergent effects that they may host. However, the practical challenge of realizing these structures on a scale large enough for spectroscopic investigation, remains a significant hurdle, resulting in a scarcity of direct measurements of the electronic band structure of twisted transition metal dichalcogenide bilayers. Here we present a systematic nanoscale angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy investigation of bulk, single layer, and twisted bilayer WS2 with a small twist angle of 4.4°. The experimental results are compared with theoretical calculations based on density functional theory along the high-symmetry directions Γ-K and Γ-M. Surprisingly, the electronic band structure measurements suggest a structural relaxation occurring at 4.4° twist angle, and formation of large, untwisted bilayer regions.

Orbital Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state in an Ising superconductor

The conventional Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state relies on the Zeeman effect of an external magnetic field to break time-reversal symmetry, forming a state of finite-momentum Cooper pairing. In superconductors with broken inversion symmetries, the Rashba or Ising-type spin-orbit coupling (SOC) can interact with either the Zeeman or the orbital effect of magnetic fields, extending the range of possible FFLO states, though evidence for these more exotic forms of FFLO pairing has been lacking. Here we report the discovery of an unconventional FFLO state induced by coupling the Ising SOC and the orbital effect in multilayer 2H-NbSe2. Transport measurements show that the translational and rotational symmetries are broken in the orbital FFLO state, providing the hallmark signatures of finite momentum cooper pairings. We establish the entire orbital FFLO phase diagram, consisting of normal metal, uniform Ising superconducting phase, and a six-fold orbital FFLO state. This study highlights an alternative route to finite-momentum superconductivity and provides a universal mechanism to prepare orbital FFLO states in similar materials with broken inversion symmetries.

Dual Universality and Unconventional Phase Diagram of a Clean 2D Superconductor with Tunable Disorders

Weakly disordered two-dimensional (2D) superconductors can host richer quantum phase transitions than their highly-disordered counterparts. This is due to the insertion of a metallic state in the transition between a superconductor and an insulator. Disorders were predicted to show profound influences on the boundaries surrounding this intermediate metallic phase, affecting the existence of a metallic ground state called Bose metal and the dynamic processes in a quantum Griffiths state. Here we present a study on quantum phase transitions of a clean 2D superconductor, MoS2, under a perpendicular magnetic field as a function of disorder strength that is tuned electrostatically. We found two universal scaling behaviors independent of disorders: a power-law scaling applies for all metallic states, and an activated dynamical scaling characterizes transitions between quantum Griffiths state and weakly localized metal. A study over a range of disorder states in this unexplored clear regime suggests that a Bose metal ground state is expected only after reaching a critical cleanness. Whereas, stronger disorder stabilizes a true 2D superconductivity and enhances the quantum Griffiths phase.

In situ tuning of symmetry-breaking induced non-reciprocity in giant-Rashba semiconductor BiTeBr

Non-reciprocal transport, where the left to right flowing current differs from the right to left flowing one, is an unexpected phenomenon in bulk crystals. BiTeBr is a non-centrosymmetric material, with a giant Rashba spin-orbit coupling which presents this unusual effect when placed in an in-plane magnetic field. It has been shown that this effect depends strongly on the carrier density, however, in-situ tuning has not yet been demonstrated. We developed a method where thin BiTeBr flakes are gate tuned via ionic-liquid gating through a thin protective hBN layer. Tuning the carrier density allows a more than \SI{400}{\percent} variation of the non-reciprocal response. Our study serves as a milestone on how a few-atomic-layer-thin van der Waals protection layer allows ionic gating of chemically sensitive, exotic nanocrystals.
