On the Graph Corresponding to Center of Distances of Metric Space

The center of distances $C(Y)$ of a metric space $(Y,ρ)$ is the set of all $t\geq 0$ for which the equation $ρ(y,p)=t $ has a solution for each point $p\in Y$. We say that a simple graph $CG_Y$ is the central graph of a metric space $(Y,ρ)$ if $Y$ is the vertex set of $CG_Y$ and distinct vertices $x,y\in Y$ are adjacent if and only if $ρ(x,y)\in C(Y)$. We prove the inequality $|E(CG_Y)| \geq \left\lceil \frac{1}{2}|Y| \right\rceil $ for all finite metric spaces $(Y,ρ)$ with $|Y|\geq 2$ and non-empty $CG_Y.$ It is also proved that the inequality $|E(CG_X)| \geq |X|-1 $ holds for each finite ultrametric space $(X,d)$. The central graphs of metric spaces $(Y,ρ)$ and ultrametric spaces $(X,d)$ satisfying $|E(CG_Y)|=\left\lceil \frac{1}{2}|Y| \right\rceil $ and, respectively, $|E(CG_X)|=|X|-1 $ are described up to graph isomorphism.

Maximal Center of Distances of Finite Ultrametric Spaces and Perfect Binary Trees

We investigate the finite ultrametric spaces $(X,d)$ that have a given cardinality of the center of distances and a minimal cardinality of the set $X$. It is shown that such spaces are isometric if and only if their centers of distances are the same. The representing trees of these spaces are characterized up to isomorphism.

Konig's Infinity Lemma for locally finite ultrametric spaces generated by labeled trees

We analyze the interplay between labeled trees and the ultrametric spaces they present. We provide characterizations of labeled trees that generate separable ultrametric spaces and those that generate locally finite ultrametric spaces. In particular, we establish an analog of Konig's Infinity Lemma for locally finite ultrametric spaces generated by labeled trees.

The Gomory-Hu inequality and trees

Let $G=(V,E)$ be a finite connected graph with vertex set $V$ and edge set $E$, and let $U(G)$ be the set of all ultrametric spaces $(V,d_l)$ generated by vertex labelings $l\colon V \to \mathbb R^+$. We prove that the inequality $$ |D(V)| \le |E| + 1 $$ holds for all $(V,d_l) \in U(G)$, where $D(V)$ is the distance set of $(V,d_l)$. The necessary and sufficient conditions under which the above inequality turns to an equality are found. Moreover, we prove that each connected graph with non-negative vertex labeling generates a pseudoultrametric space and find some sufficient conditions under which this space is ultrametric.

On the center of distances of finite ultrametric spaces

The center of distances of a metric space $(X,d)$ is the set $C(X)$ of all $t\in \mathbb R^+$ for which the equation $d(x,p)=t$ has a solution for each $p\in X$. We prove the inequality $|C(X)| \le 1 + \lfloor \log_2 n \rfloor$ for all finite ultrametric spaces $(X,d)$ which have exactly $n$ points. It is also shown that for every integer $n \geq 1$ there exists a finite ultrametric space $(Y,ρ)$ such that $|Y| = n$ and $|C(Y)| = 1 + \log_2 \lfloor n \rfloor. $

Center of distances of ultrametric spaces generated by labeled trees

The center of distances of a metric space $(X,d)$ is the set $C(X)$ of all $t\in \mathbb R^+$ for which the equation $d(x,p)=t$ has a solution for each $p\in X$. We prove that the equalities $C(X)=\{0\}$ or $C(X)=\{0,\operatorname{diam}X\} $ hold if $(X,d)$ is an ultrametric space generated by labeled trees. The necessary and sufficient conditions under which $\operatorname{diam} X\in C(X)$ are found.

On the closure of one point sets in \(T_0\)-spaces

Let $X$ be a set and $2^X$ be a set of all subsets of $X$. The necessary and sufficient conditions under which a mapping $X \to 2^X$ is a closure of one-point sets in some $T_0$-space $(X, τ)$ are described. It is proved that every $T_0$-Alexandroff space is quasi-metrizable by some equidistant quasi-metric.

Longest paths in trees and isometricity of ultrametric spaces

Let $T$ be a tree of arbitrary finite or infinite order and let $U(T)$ be the set of all ultrametric spaces generated by vertex labelings of $T$. Let ${\bf US}$ denote the class of all ultrametric spaces generated by vertex labelings of star graphs. We prove that the inclusion $U(T)\subseteq {\bf US}$ holds if and only if the longest path in $T$ has a length not exceeding three.

Hausdorff distance between ultrametric balls

Let $(X, d)$ be an ultrametric space and let $d_H$ be the Hausdorff distance on the set $\bar{\mathbf{B}}_X$ of all closed balls in $(X, d)$. Some interconnections between the properties of the spaces $(X, d)$ and $(\bar{\mathbf{B}}_X, d_H)$ are described. It is established that the space $(\bar{\mathbf{B}}_X, d_H)$ has such properties as discreteness, local finiteness, metrical discreteness, completeness, compactness, local compactness if and only if the space $(X, d)$ has these properties. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the separability of the space $(\bar{\mathbf{B}}_X, d_H)$ are also proved.

Labeled Trees Generating Separable and Locally Finite Ultrametrics

We analyze the interplay between labeled trees and the ultrametric spaces they present. We provide characterizations of labeled trees that generate separable ultrametric spaces and those that generate locally finite ultrametric spaces. In particular, we establish an analog of König's Infinity Lemma for locally finite ultrametric spaces generated by labeled trees.

Compact ultrametric spaces generated by labeled star graphs

Let US be the class of all ultrametric spaces generated by labeled star graphs. We prove that compact US-spaces are the completions of totally bounded ultrametric spaces generated by decreasingly labeled rays. We characterize the ultrametric spaces which are weakly similar to finite US-spaces and describe these spaces by certain four-point conditions.

Totally bounded ultrametric spaces and locally finite trees

We investigate the interrelations between the metric properties, order properties and combinatorial properties of the set of balls in totally bounded ultrametric space. In particular, the Gurvich-Vyalyi representation of finite, ultrametric spaces by monotone rooted trees is generalized to the case of totally bounded ultrametric spaces. It is shown that such spaces have isometric completions if and only if their labeled representing trees are isomorphic. We characterize up to isomorphism the representing trees of these spaces and, up to order isomorphism, the posets of open balls in such spaces.

Ultrametric spaces generated by labeled star graphs

For arbitrary star graph $S$ with a non-degenerate vertex labeling $l\colon V(S) \to \mathbb{R}^+$ we denote by $d_l$ the corresponding ultrametric on the vertex set $V(S)$ of $S$. We characterize the class $\bf US$ of all ultrametric spaces $(V(S), d_l)$ up to isometry. We also find the necessary and sufficient conditions under which the group of all self-isometries of ultrametric space $(V(S), d_l)$ coincides with the group of all self-isomorphisms of the labeled star graph $S(l)$.

Totally bounded ultrametric spaces generated by labeled rays

We will say that an infinite tree $T$ is almost a ray if $T$ is the union of a ray and a finite tree. Let $l$ be a non-degenerate labeling of the vertex set $V$ of almost a ray $T$ and let $d_l$ be the corresponding ultrametric on $V$. It is shown that the ultrametric space $(V, d_l)$ is totally bounded iff this space contains an infinite totally bounded subspace. We also prove that the last property characterizes the almost rays.

Characterization of geodesic distance on infinite graphs

Let $G$ be a connected graph and let $d_G$ be the geodesic distance on $V(G)$. The metric spaces $(V(G), d_{G})$ are characterized up to isometry for all finite connected $G$ by David C. Kay and Gary Chartrand in 1964. The main result of the paper expands this characterization on the infinite connected graphs. We also prove that every metric space with integer distances between its points admits an isometric embedding into $(V(G), d_G)$ for suitable $G$.

Delhomme-Laflamme-Pouzet-Sauer space as groupoid

Let $\mathbb{R}^{+}=[0, \infty)$ and let $d^+$ be the ultrametric on $\mathbb{R}^+$ such that $d^+ (x,y) = \max\{x,y\}$ for all different $x,y \in \mathbb{R}^+$. It is shown that the monomorphisms of the groupoid $(\mathbb{R}^+, d^+)$ coincide with the injective ultrametric-preserving functions and that the automorphisms of $(\mathbb{R}^+, d^+)$ coincide with the self-homeomorphisms of $\mathbb{R}^+$. The structure of endomorphisms of $(\mathbb{R}^+, d^+)$ is also described.

Ultrametric-preserving functions as monoid endomorphisms

Let $\mathbb{R}^{+}=[0, \infty)$ and let $\mathbf{End}_{\mathbb{R}^+}$ be the set of all endomorphisms of the monoid $(\mathbb{R}^+, \vee)$. The set $\mathbf{End}_{\mathbb{R}^+}$ is a monoid with respect to the operation of the function composition $g \circ f$. It is shown that $g : \mathbb{R}^+ \to \mathbb{R}^+$ is pseudoultrametric-preserving iff $g \in \mathbf{End}_{\mathbb{R}^+}$. In particular, a function $f : \mathbb{R}^+ \to \mathbb{R}^+$ is ultrametrics-preserving iff it is an endomorphism of $(\mathbb{R}^+,\vee)$ with kernel consisting only the zero point. We prove that a given $\mathbf{A} \subseteq \mathbf{End}_{\mathbb{R}^+}$ is a submonoid of $(\mathbf{End}, \circ)$ iff there is a class $\mathbf{X}$ of pseudoultrametric spaces such that $\mathbf{A}$ coincides with the set of all functions which preserve the spaces from $\mathbf{X}$. An explicit construction of such $\mathbf{X}$ is given.
