Group actions with almost normal stabilizers

In this paper, we consider minimal group actions of countable groups on compact Hausdorff spaces by homeomorphisms. We show that the existence of a point with finite stabilizer imposes strong restrictions on the dynamics: the residual set of points then has stabilizers conjugate to the same almost normal subgroup of the acting group. Under certain conditions on the acting group such an action also has no essential holonomy. If the acting group is residually finite, we show that every group action with finite almost normal stabilizers with no essential holonomy arises as an almost finite-to-one factor of an essentially free action.

Profinite geometric iterated monodromy groups of postcritically finite polynomials in degree 3

In this article, we study the properties of profinite geometric iterated monodromy groups associated to polynomials. Such groups can be seen as generic representations of absolute Galois groups of number fields into the automorphism group of a regular rooted tree. Our main result is that, for a degree 3 postcritically finite polynomial over a number field, where each finite postcritical point has at least one preimage outside the critical orbits, the associated profinite geometric iterated monodromy group is finitely invariably generated. Moreover, this group is determined by the isomorphism class of the ramification portrait of the polynomial, up to conjugation by an automorphism of the ternary rooted tree. We also study the group-theoretical properties of such groups, namely their branch and torsion properties. In particular, we show that such groups are regular branch over the closure of their commutator subgroup, and that they contain torsion elements of any order realizable in the ternary tree.

Skew-product systems over infinite interval exchange transformations

We study the ergodic properties (recurrence, discrepancy, diffusion coefficients and ergodicity itself) of a class of $\mathbb Z$-extensions over infinite interval exchange transformations called rotated odometers. The choice of a skew-function is motivated by the use in the study of parallel flows on a particular staircase manifold of infinite genus.

Type invariants for non-abelian odometers

In this work, we introduce the type and typeset invariants for equicontinuous group actions on Cantor sets; that is, for generalized odometers. These invariants are collections of equivalence classes of asymptotic Steinitz numbers associated to the action. We show the type is an invariant of the return equivalence class of the action. We introduce the notion of commensurable typesets, and show that two actions which are return equivalent have commensurable typesets. Examples are given to illustrate the properties of the type and typeset invariants. The type and typeset invariants are used to define homeomorphism invariants for solenoidal manifolds.

Non-Hausdorff germinal groupoids for actions of countable groups

We study conditions under which the germinal groupoid associated to a minimal equicontinuous action of a countable group on a Cantor set has non-Hausdorff topology. We develop a new criterion, which serves as an obstruction for the étale topology on the groupoid to be non-Hausdorff. We use this and other criteria to study the topology of germinal groupoids for a few classes of actions. In particular, we give examples of families of contracting and non-contracting self-similar groups, which are amenable and whose actions have associated germinal groupoids with non-Hausdorff topology.

Prime spectrum and dynamics for nilpotent Cantor actions

A minimal equicontinuous action by homeomorphisms of a discrete group $Γ$ on a Cantor set $X$ is locally quasi-analytic, if each homeomorphism has a unique extension from small open sets to open sets of uniform diameter on $X$. A minimal action is stable, if the actions of $Γ$ and of the closure of $Γ$ in the group of homeomorphisms of $X$, are both locally quasi-analytic. When $Γ$ is virtually nilpotent, we say that $Φ\colon Γ\times \mathfrak{X} \to \mathfrak{X}$ is a nilpotent Cantor action. We show that a nilpotent Cantor action with finite prime spectrum must be stable. We also prove there exist uncountably many distinct Cantor actions of the Heisenberg group, necessarily with infinite prime spectrum, which are not stable.

Rotated Odometers

We describe the infinite interval exchange transformations, called the rotated odometers, that are obtained as compositions of finite interval exchange transformations and the von Neumann-Kakutani map. We show that with respect to Lebesgue measure on the unit interval, every such transformation is measurably isomorphic to the first return map of a rational parallel flow on a translation surface of finite area with infinite genus and a finite number of ends. We describe the dynamics of rotated odometers by means of Bratteli-Vershik systems, derive several of their topological and ergodic properties, and investigate in detail a range of specific examples of rotated odometers.

Essential holonomy of Cantor actions

A group action has essential holonomy if the set of points with non-trivial holonomy has positive measure. If such an action is topologically free, then having essential holonomy is equivalent to the action not being essentially free, which means that the set of points with non-trivial stabilizer has positive measure. In this paper, we investigate the relation between the property of having essential holonomy and structure of the acting group for minimal equicontinuous actions on Cantor sets. We show that if such a group action is locally quasi-analytic and has essential holonomy, then every commutator subgroup in the group lower central series has elements with positive measure set of points with non-trivial holonomy. In particular, this gives a new proof that a minimal equicontinuous Cantor action by a nilpotent group has no essential holonomy. We also show that the property of having essential holonomy is preserved under return equivalence and continuous orbit equivalence of minimal equicontinuous Cantor actions. Finally, we give examples to show that the assumption on the action that it is locally quasi-analytic is necessary.

Rotated Odometers and Actions on Rooted Trees

A rotated odometer is an infinite interval exchange transformation (IET) obtained as a composition of the von Neumann-Kakutani map and a finite IET of intervals of equal length. In this paper, we consider rotated odometers for which the finite IET is of intervals of length $2^{-N}$, for some $N \geq 1$. We show that every such system is measurably isomorphic to a $\mathbb{Z}$-action on a rooted tree, and that the unique minimal aperiodic subsystem of this action is always measurably isomorphic to the action of the adding machine. We discuss the applications of this work to the study of group actions on binary trees.

Settled elements in profinite groups

Given a polynomial of degree d over a number field, the image of the associated arboreal representation of the absolute Galois group of the field is a profinite group acting on the d-ary tree. Boston and Jones conjectured that for a quadratic polynomial, the image of such a representation contains a dense set of settled elements. Here an element is settled if it exhibits a certain pattern of growth of cycles at finite levels of the tree. In this paper, we prove the conjecture of Boston and Jones generically in the case when the quadratic polynomial has a strictly pre-periodic post-critical orbit of length 2, and provide new evidence that the conjecture holds for quadratic polynomials with strictly pre-periodic post-critical orbits of length at least 3. To prove our results, we introduce a new dynamical method, which uses the notions of a maximal torus and its Weyl group. These notions are analogous to the notions of maximal tori and Weyl groups in the theory of compact Lie groups, where they are fundamental. For profinite groups, maximal tori and Weyl groups contain the information about settled elements, and this is the foundation of our method.

Hausdorff dimension in graph matchbox manifolds

We study the Hausdorff and the box dimensions of closed invariant subsets of the space of pointed trees, equipped with a pseudogroup action. This pseudogroup dynamical system can be regarded as a generalization of a shift space. We show that the Hausdorff dimension of this space is infinite, and the union of closed invariant subsets with dense orbit and non-equal Hausdorff and box dimensions is dense in this space. We apply our results to the problem of embedding laminations into differentiable foliations of smooth manifolds. One of necessary conditions for the existence of such an embedding is that the lamination must admit a bi-Lipschitz embedding into a manifold. A suspension of the pseudogroup action on the space of pointed graphs gives an example where this condition is not satisfied, with Hausdorff dimension of the space of pointed trees being the obstruction to the existence of such a bi-Lipschitz embedding.

Nilpotent Cantor actions

A nilpotent Cantor action is a minimal equicontinuous action $Φ\colon Γ\times \frak{X} \to \frak{X}$ on a Cantor set $\frak{X}$, where $Γ$ contains a finitely-generated nilpotent subgroup $Γ_0 \subset Γ$ of finite index. In this note, we show that these actions are distinguished among general Cantor actions: any effective action of a finitely generated group on a Cantor space, which is continuously orbit equivalent to a nilpotent Cantor action, must itself be a nilpotent Cantor action. As an application of this result, we obtain new invariants of nilpotent Cantor actions under continuous orbit equivalence.

The prime spectrum of solenoidal manifolds

A solenoidal manifold is the inverse limit space of a tower of proper coverings of a compact manifold. In this work, we introduce new invariants for solenoidal manifolds, their asymptotic Steinitz orders and their prime spectra, and show they are invariants of the homeomorphism type. These invariants are formulated in terms of the monodromy Cantor action associated to a solenoidal manifold. To this end, we continue our study of invariants for minimal equicontinuous Cantor actions. We introduce the three types of prime spectra associated to such actions, and study their invariance properties under return equivalence. As an application, we show that a nilpotent Cantor action with finite prime spectrum must be stable. Examples of stable actions of the integer Heisenberg group are given with arbitrary prime spectrum. We also give the first examples of nilpotent Cantor actions which are wild.

Wild Cantor actions

The discriminant group of a minimal equicontinuous action of a group $G$ on a Cantor set $X$ is the subgroup of the closure of the action in the group of homeomorphisms of $X$, consisting of homeomorphisms which fix a given point. The stabilizer and the centralizer groups associated to the action are obtained as direct limits of sequences of subgroups of the discriminant group with certain properties. Minimal equicontinuous group actions on Cantor sets admit a classification by the properties of the stabilizer and centralizer direct limit groups. In this paper, we construct new families of examples of minimal equicontinuous actions on Cantor sets, which illustrate certain aspects of this classification. These examples are constructed as actions on rooted trees. The acting groups are countable subgroups of the product or of the wreath product of groups. We discuss applications of our results to the study of attractors of dynamical systems and of minimal sets of foliations.

Cantor dynamics of renormalizable groups

A group $Γ$ is said to be finitely non-co-Hopfian, or renormalizable, if there exists a self-embedding $φ\colon Γ\to Γ$ whose image is a proper subgroup of finite index. Such a proper self-embedding is called a renormalization for $Γ$. In this work, we associate a dynamical system to a renormalization $φ$ of $Γ$. The discriminant invariant ${\mathcal D}_φ$ of the associated Cantor dynamical system is a profinite group which is a measure of the asymmetries of the dynamical system. If ${\mathcal D}_φ$ is a finite group for some renormalization, we show that $Γ/C_φ$ is virtually nilpotent, where $C_φ$ is the kernel of the action map. We introduce the notion of a (virtually) renormalizable Cantor action, and show that the action associated to a renormalizable group is virtually renormalizable. We study the properties of virtually renormalizable Cantor actions, and show that virtual renormalizability is an invariant of continuous orbit equivalence. Moreover, the discriminant invariant of a renormalizable Cantor action is an invariant of continuous orbit equivalence. Finally, the notion of a renormalizable Cantor action is related to the notion of a self-replicating group of automorphisms of a rooted tree.

Measures and stabilizers of group Cantor actions

We consider a minimal equicontinuous action of a finitely generated group $G$ on a Cantor set $X$ with invariant probability measure $μ$, and stabilizers of points for such an action. We give sufficient conditions under which there exists a subgroup $H$ of $G$ such that the set of points in $X$ whose stabilizers are conjugate to $H$ has full measure. The conditions are that the action is locally quasi-analytic and locally non-degenerate. An action is locally quasi-analytic if its elements have unique extensions on subsets of uniform diameter. The condition that the action is locally non-degenerate is introduced in this paper. We apply our results to study the properties of invariant random subgroups induced by minimal equicontinuous actions on Cantor sets and to certain almost one-to-one extensions of equicontinuous actions.

Galois groups and Cantor actions

In this paper, we study the actions of profinite groups on Cantor sets which arise from representations of Galois groups of certain fields of rational functions. Such representations are associated to polynomials, and they are called profinite iterated monodromy groups. We are interested in a topological invariant of such actions called the asymptotic discriminant. In particular, we give a complete classification by whether the asymptotic discriminant is stable or wild in the case when the polynomial generating the representation is quadratic. We also study different ways in which a wild asymptotic discriminant can arise.

Limit group invariants for non-free Cantor actions

A Cantor action is a minimal equicontinuous action of a countably generated group G on a Cantor space X. Such actions are also called generalized odometers in the literature. In this work, we introduce two new conjugacy invariants for Cantor actions, the stabilizer limit group and the centralizer limit group. An action is wild if the stabilizer limit group is an increasing sequence of stabilizer groups without bound, and otherwise is said to be stable if this group chain is bounded. For Cantor actions by a finitely generated group G, we prove that stable actions satisfy a rigidity principle, and furthermore show that the wild property is an invariant of the continuous orbit equivalence class of the action. A Cantor action is said to be dynamically wild if it is wild, and the centralizer limit group is a proper subgroup of the stabilizer limit group. This property is also a conjugacy invariant, and we show that a Cantor action with a non-Hausdorff element must be dynamically wild. We then give examples of wild Cantor actions with non-Hausdorff elements, using recursive methods from Geometric Group Theory to define actions on the boundaries of trees.
