Machine Learning Guided Discovery of Corundum High Entropy Oxides

Early thinking in the field of high entropy oxides (HEOs) emphasized their likely abundance, with combinatorial arguments hinting at a myriad of new materials. The experimental reality has proven more challenging: the stability of HEOs cannot be straightforwardly predicted based on ionic radii, lattice geometry, and charge-balancing considerations alone. In this work, we employ machine learning interatomic potentials (MLIPs) to predict the synthesizability of HEOs of the form $A_2$O$_3$ derived from a selection of trivalent cations. From nearly 500 possible compositions, we identify 16 promising candidates for experimental validation with solid-state and combustion synthesis. We discover three new HEOs in the corundum structure, including (Al,Cr,Fe,Rh,Sc)$_2$O$_3$, and one novel cation-ordered phase, (Al,Fe,Ga,Sc)$_2$O$_3$. By far the most common synthesis outcome was a mixture of competing phases, sometimes involving redox reactions. Our results also reveal profound synthesis method dependence for the final product, where qualitatively equivalent outcomes between the two synthesis methods were only observed for 3 of the 16 tested compositions. We conclude that the occurrence rate of HEOs is far rarer than initially believed and that machine learning approaches can effectively guide us to the "needle in the haystack".

Expanding the search space of high entropy oxides and predicting synthesizability using machine learning interatomic potentials

We propose an efficient computational methodology for predicting the synthesizability of high entropy oxides (HEOs) in a large space of possible candidate compounds. HEOs are a growing field with an enormous potential chemical composition space, and yet the discovery of new HEOs is slow and driven by experimental trial-and-error. In this work, we attempt to speed up this process by using a machine learned interatomic potential offering DFT-level accuracy. Our methodology starts by identifying a set of crystal structures and elements for screening, building a large random unit cell of each composition and structure, then relaxing this structure. The most promising candidates are distinguished based on the variance of the individual cation energies, which we introduce as our entropy descriptor, and the enthalpy of mixing, which is used as the enthalpy descriptor. The approach is applied to tetravalent HEOs, and its validity is confirmed by comparison to alternative descriptors and DFT calculations for a set of 7 elements. The search is then extended to a set of 14 elements and three crystal structures, where it successfully identifies the only known stable 4-component HEO in the $α$-PbO$_2$ structure, as well as predicting several new 5-component candidate systems. This approach can straightforwardly be applied to new sets of elements and structures, allowing for the accelerated discovery of new HEOs.

Computationally efficient method for calculating electron-phonon coupling for high-throughput superconductivity search

Using a computationally inexpensive frozen phonon approach we have developed a technique which can be used to screen large unit cell materials and systems for enhanced superconducting critical temperatures. The method requires only density functional theory (DFT) calculated electronic band structures of phonon modes corresponding to atomic displacements for various materials. We have applied this method to well known conventional superconductors including MgB$_2$, H$_{3}$S and other hydrides as examples.

Collective modes and gapped momentum states in liquid Ga: experiment, theory and simulation

Collective excitations in liquids are important for understanding liquid dynamical and thermodynamic properties. Gapped momentum states (GMS) are a notable feature of liquid dynamics predicted to operate in the transverse sector of collective excitations. Here, we combine inelastic neutron scattering experiments, theory and molecular dynamics modelling to study collective excitations and GMS in liquid Ga in a wide range of temperature and $k$-points. We find that all three lines of enquiry agree for the longitudinal sector of liquid dynamics. In the transverse sector, the experiments agree with theory, modelling as well as earlier X-ray experiments at larger $k$, whereas theory and modelling agree in a wide range of temperature and $k$-points. We observe the emergence and development of the $k$-gap in the transverse sector which increases with temperature and inverse of relaxation time as predicted theoretically.

The origin of negative charging in amorphous Al$_2$O$_3$ films: The role of native defects

Amorphous aluminum oxide Al$_2$O$_3$ (a-Al$_2$O$_3$) layers grown by various deposition techniques contain a significant density of negative charges. In spite of several experimental and theoretical studies, the origin of these charges still remains unclear. We report the results of extensive Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations of native defects - O and Al vacancies and interstitials, as well as H interstitial centers - in different charge states in both crystalline $α$-Al$_2$O$_3$ and in a-Al$_2$O$_3$. The results demonstrate that both the charging process and the energy distribution of traps responsible for negative charging of a-Al$_2$O$_3$ films [M. B. Zahid et al., IEEE Trans. Electron Devices 57, 2907 (2010)] can be understood assuming that the negatively charged O$_{\textrm{i}}$ and V$_{\textrm{Al}}$ defects are nearly compensated by the positively charged H$_{\textrm{i}}$, V$_{\textrm{O}}$ and Al$_{\textrm{i}}$ defects in as prepared samples. Following electron injection, the states of Al$_{\textrm{i}}$, V$_{\textrm{O}}$ or H$_{\textrm{i}}$ in the band gap become occupied by electrons and sample becomes negatively charged. The optical excitation energies from these states into the oxide conduction band agree with the results of exhaustive photo-depopulation spectroscopy (EPDS) measurements [M. B. Zahid et al., IEEE Trans. Electron Devices 57, 2907 (2010)]. This new understanding of the origin of negative charging of a-Al$_2$O$_3$ films is important for further development of nanoelectronic devices and solar cells.
