Charmless chiral perturbation theory for N_f=2+1+1 twisted mass lattice QCD

The chiral Lagrangian describing the low-energy behavior of N_f=2+1+1 twisted mass lattice QCD is constructed through O(a^2). In contrast to existing results the effects of a heavy charm quark are consistently removed, leaving behind a charmless 3-flavor Lagrangian. This Lagrangian is used to compute the pion and kaon masses to one loop in a regime where the pion mass splitting is large and taken as a leading order effect. In comparison with continuum chiral perturbation theory additional chiral logarithms are present in the results. In particular, chiral logarithms involving the neutral pion mass appear. These predict rather large finite volume corrections in the kaon mass which roughly account for the finite volume effects observed in lattice data.

Flavor symmetry breaking in mixed-action QCD

We study the phase structure of mixed-action QCD with two Wilson sea quarks and two chiral valence quarks, starting from the chiral lagrangian. A priori, the effective theory allows for a rich phase structure, including a phase with a condensate made of sea and valence quarks. Because this would lead to mass eigenstates that are admixtures of sea and valence fields, pure-sea correlation functions would depend on valence quark masses, in contradiction with the actual setup of mixed-action simulations. Using properties of the chiral Dirac operator, we prove that such a phase does not occur, and that this leads to bounds on low-energy constants.

Domain wall filters

We propose using the extra dimension separating the domain walls carrying lattice quarks of opposite handedness to gradually filter out the ultraviolet fluctuations of the gauge fields that are felt by the fermionic excitations living in the bulk. This generalization of the homogeneous domain wall construction has some theoretical features that seem nontrivial.

Chiral Perturbation Theory for Staggered Sea Quarks and Ginsparg-Wilson Valence Quarks

We study lattice QCD with staggered sea and Ginsparg-Wilson valence quarks. The Symanzik effective action for this mixed lattice theory, including the lattice spacing contributions of O(a^2), is derived. Using this effective theory we construct the leading order chiral Lagrangian. The masses and decay constants of pseudoscalars containing two Ginsparg-Wilson valence quarks are computed at one loop order.

Twisted-mass QCD, O(a) improvement and Wilson chiral perturbation theory

We point out a caveat in the proof for automatic O(a) improvement in twisted mass lattice QCD at maximal twist angle. With the definition for the twist angle previously given by Frezzotti and Rossi, automatic O(a) improvement can fail unless the quark mass satisfies m_q >> a^2 Lambda_QCD^3. We propose a different definition for the twist angle which does not require a restriction on the quark mass for automatic O(a) improvement. In order to illustrate explicitly automatic O(a) improvement we compute the pion mass in the corresponding chiral effective theory. We consider different definitions for maximal twist and show explicitly the absence or presence of the leading O(a) effect, depending on the size of the quark mass.

Chiral perturbation theory at O(a^2) for lattice QCD

We construct the chiral effective Lagrangian for two lattice theories: one with Wilson fermions and the other with Wilson sea fermions and Ginsparg-Wilson valence fermions. For each of these theories we construct the Symanzik action through order $a^2$. The chiral Lagrangian is then derived, including terms of order $a^2$, which have not been calculated before. We find that there are only few new terms at this order. Corrections to existing coefficients in the continuum chiral Lagrangian are proportional to $a^2$, and appear in the Lagrangian at order $a^2 p^2$ or higher. Similarly, O(4) symmetry breaking terms enter the Symanzik action at order $a^2$, but contribute to the chiral Lagrangian at order $a^2 p^4$ or higher. We calculate the light meson masses in chiral perturbation theory for both lattice theories. At next-to-leading order, we find that there are no order $a^2$ corrections to the valence-valence meson mass in the mixed theory due to the enhanced chiral symmetry of the valence sector.

Global Anomalies in chiral gauge theories on the lattice

We discuss the issue of global anomalies in chiral gauge theories on the lattice. In Luscher's approach, these obstructions make it impossible to define consistently a fermionic measure for the path integral. We show that an SU(2) theory has such a global anomaly if the Weyl fermion is in the fundamental representation. The anomaly in higher representations is also discussed. We finally show that this obstruction is the lattice analogue of the SU(2) anomaly first discovered by Witten.

Global anomalies in Chiral Lattice Gauge Theory

As first realized by Witten an SU(2) gauge theory coupled to a single Weyl fermion suffers from a global anomaly. This problem is addressed here in the context of the recent developments on chiral gauge theories on the lattice. We find Witten's anomaly manifests in the impossibility of defining globally a fermion measure that reproduces the proper continuum limit. Moreover, following Witten's original argument, we check numerically the crossing of the lowest eigenvalues of Neuberger's operator along a path connecting two gauge fields that differ by a topologically non-trivial gauge transformation.

1/m_b^2 correction to the left-right lepton polarization asymmetry in the decay B -> X_s mu^+ mu^-

Using a known result by Falk et al. for the 1/m_b^2 correction to the dilepton invariant mass spectrum in the decay B \rightarrow X_s μ^+ μ^-, we calculate the 1/m_b^2 correction to the left-right muon polarization asymmetry in this decay. Employing an up-to-date range of values for the non-perturbative parameter λ_1, we find that the correction is much smaller than it should have been expected from the previous work by Falk et al.
