Existence proofs for rotationally symmetric translating solutions to mean curvature flow

There exist rotationally symmetric translating solutions to mean curvature flow that can be written as a graph over Euclidean space. This result is well-known. Its proof uses the symmetry and techniques from partial differential equations. However, the result can also be formulated as an existence result for a singular ordinary differential equation. Here, we provide different methods to prove existence of these solutions based on the study of the singular ordinary differential equation without using methods from partial differential equations.

Mean curvature flow in asymptotically flat product spacetimes

We consider the long-time behaviour of the mean curvature flow of spacelike hypersurfaces in the Lorentzian product manifold $M\times\mathbb{R}$, where $M$ is asymptotically flat. If the initial hypersurface $F_0\subset M\times\mathbb{R}$ is uniformly spacelike and asymptotic to $M\times\left\{s\right\}$ for some $s\in\mathbb{R}$ at infinity, we show that a mean curvature flow starting at $F_0$ exists for all times and converges uniformly to $M\times\left\{s\right\}$ as $t\to \infty$.

Weak solutions to mean curvature flow respecting obstacles I: the graphical case

We consider the problem of evolving hypersurfaces by mean curvature flow in the presence of obstacles, that is domains which the flow is not allowed to enter. In this paper, we treat the case of complete graphs and explain how the approach of M. Saez and the second author yields a global weak solution to the original problem for general initial data and onesided obstacles.

Mean curvature flow without singularities

We study graphical mean curvature flow of complete solutions defined on subsets of Euclidean space. We obtain smooth long time existence. The projections of the evolving graphs also solve mean curvature flow. Hence this approach allows to smoothly flow through singularities by studying graphical mean curvature flow with one additional dimension.

Stability of hyperbolic space under Ricci flow

We study the Ricci flow of initial metrics which are C^0-perturbations of the hyperbolic metric on H^n. If the perturbation is bounded in the L^2-sense, and small enough in the C^0-sense, then we show the following: In dimensions four and higher, the scaled Ricci harmonic map heat flow of such a metric converges smoothly, uniformly and exponentially fast in all C^k-norms and in the L^2-norm to the hyperbolic metric as time approaches infinity. We also prove a related result for the Ricci flow and for the two-dimensional conformal Ricci flow.

Stability of mean convex cones under mean curvature flow

We consider graphical solutions to mean curvature flow and obtain a stability result for homothetically expanding solutions coming out of cones of positive mean curvature: If another solution is initially close to the cone at infinity, then the difference to the homothetically expanding solution becomes small for large times. The proof involves the construction of appropriate barriers.

Evolution of convex lens-shaped networks under curve shortening flow

We consider convex symmetric lens-shaped networks in R^2 that evolve under curve shortening flow. We show that the enclosed convex domain shrinks to a point in finite time. Furthermore, after appropriate rescaling the evolving networks converge to a self-similarly shrinking network, which we prove to be unique in an appropriate class. We also include a classification result for some self-similarly shrinking networks.

Stability of Euclidean space under Ricci flow

We study the Ricci flow for initial metrics which are C^0 small perturbations of the Euclidean metric on R^n. In the case that this metric is asymptotically Euclidean, we show that a Ricci harmonic map heat flow exists for all times, and converges uniformly to the Euclidean metric as time approaches infinity. In proving this stability result, we introduce a monotone integral quantity which measures the deviation of the evolving metric from the Euclidean metric. We also investigate the convergence of the diffeomorphisms relating Ricci harmonic map heat flow to Ricci flow.

Self-similarly expanding networks to curve shortening flow

We consider a network in the Euclidean plane that consists of three distinct half-lines with common start points. From that network as initial condition, there exists a network that consists of three curves that all start at one point, where they form 120 degree angles, and expands homothetically under curve shortening flow. We also prove uniqueness of these networks.

Surfaces contracting with speed |A|^2

We show that strictly convex surfaces contracting with normal velocity equal to |A|^2 shrink to a point in finite time. After appropriate rescaling, they converge to spheres. We indicate how we used a computer to find the main test function.

Surfaces expanding by the inverse Gauss curvature flow

We show that strictly convex surfaces expanding by the inverse Gauss curvature flow converge to infinity in finite time. After appropriate rescaling, they converge to spheres. We describe the algorithm to find our main test function.

Stability of translating solutions to mean curvature flow

We prove stability of rotationally symmetric translating solutions to mean curvature flow. For initial data that converge spatially at infinity to such a soliton, we obtain convergence for large times to that soliton without imposing any decay rates.

Decay at infinity for parabolic equations

We consider solutions to linear parabolic equations with initial data decaying at spatial infinity. For a class of advection-diffusion equations with a spatially dependent velocity field, we study the behavior of solutions as time tends to infinity. We characterize velocity fields, so that positive solutions decay or lift-off at spatial infinity as time tends to infinity. This addresses the question of stability of the zero solution for decaying perturbations.
