Topochemical Fluorination of La$_2$NiO$_{4+\delta}$ Single Crystals

Topochemical fluorination offers a low--temperature route for modifying the anion chemistry and electronic ground states of layered transition-metal oxides, providing access to metastable phases and functionalities that are not able to be achieved through conventional solid--state synthesis. Despite extensive work on polycrystalline samples and thin films, topochemical fluorination of bulk single crystals has not been studied, limiting insights into intrinsic structure property relationships. Here, we investigate the topochemical fluorination of optical float zone grown (OFZ) La$_2$NiO$_{4+\delta}$ single crystals using polymer-based PTFE, PVDF and inorganic CuF$_{2}$ fluorination agents and compare it to our topochemical pathways of reduction of LaNiO$_{3-x}$. By systematically investigating direct and indirect contact reaction pathways, we can understand fluorination mechanisms, quantify the degree of fluorine incorporation, and evaluate the resulting structural and magnetic modifications in a detail that was not possible in powder and thin films. Powder and single--crystal X-ray diffraction reveal that fluorination proceeds without destroying the Ruddlesden--Popper framework, while inducing lattice parameter changes consistent with anion intercalation in the bulk and ion exchange on the surface. This even induces a clear superstructure, which was not reported before and extends the understanding of anion insertion reactions beyond what is known on stage ordering in nickelates. Energy-dispersive X--ray spectroscopy confirms strong fluorine incorporation on the surface and reduced homogeneity in the bulk. Magnetic susceptibility measurements demonstrate a change in antiferromagnetic ordering upon fluorination.

Realization of a classical Ruddlesden Popper type bilayer nickelate in Sr$_3$Ni$_{2-x}$Al$_{x}$O$_{7-\delta}$ with unusual Ni$^{4+}$

The discovery of 80 K superconductivity in bilayer La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ at pressures greater than 14 GPa presents a unique opportunity to study a novel class of high-temperature superconductors. Therefore, other bilayer nickelate following the classical ($T^{4+}$) Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) series of Sr$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ would present an interesting new candidate. In this work, we study the stabilization of RP $n=2$ phase in Sr$_3$Ni$_{2-x}$Al$_{x}$O$_7$, via floating zone growth of crystals. With powder and single crystal XRD, we study the stability range of the RP-type phase. Our Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and gas extraction studies reveal a remarkably high oxidation state of Ni$^{4+}$. The obtained black crystals are insulating in transport and show a magnetic transition around 12 K.

Recycling of beta-Li3PS4-based all-solid-state Li-ion batteries: Interactions of electrode materials and electrolyte in a dissolution-based separation process

All-solid-state batteries are currently developed at high pace and show a strong potential for market introduction within the next years. Though their performance has improved considerably over the last years, investigation of their sustainability and the development of suitable recycling strategies have received less attention. However, their potential for efficient circular processes must be accessed comprehensively. In this article, we investigate the separation of the solid electrolyte beta-Li3PS4 from different lithium transition metal oxide electrode materials (LiCoO2, LiMn2O4, LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2, LiFePO4, LiNi0.85Co0.1Al0.05O2 and Li4Ti5O12) via an approach based on the dissolution and subsequent recrystallization of the thiophosphate using N-methylformamide as solvent. A combination of X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry, iodometric titration and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy as well as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and electrochemical characterization was used to characterize the electrolyte and electrode materials before and after separation. We find that the presence of electrode materials in the dissolution process can lead to significant chemical reactions. These interactions can (but most not) lead to strong alteration of the electrochemical characteristics of the individual compounds. Thus, we show that an efficient recovery of materials will likely depend on the precise material combination within an all-solid-state battery.

Dissolution and Recrystallization Behavior of Li3PS4 in Different Organic Solvents

Solid state batteries can be built based on thiophosphate electrolytes such as beta-Li3PS4. For the preparation of these electrolytes, various solvent-based routes have been reported. For recycling of end-of-life solid state batteries based on such thiophosphates, we consider the development of dissolution and recrystallization strategies for the recovery of the model compound beta-Li3PS4. We show that recrystallization can only be performed in polar, slightly protic solvents such as N-methylformamide (NMF). The recrystallization is comprehensively studied, showing that it proceeds via an intermediate phase with composition Li3PS4*2NMF, which is structurally characterized. This phase has a high resistivity for the transport of lithium ions and must be removed in order to obtain a recrystallized product with a conductivity similar to the pristine material. Moreover, the recrystallization from solution results in an increase of the amorphous phase fraction next to crystalline beta-Li3PS4, which results in a decrease of the activation energy to 0.2 eV compared to 0.38 eV for the pristine phase.

Dynamic stabilization of perovskites at elevated temperatures: A comparison between cubic BaFeO$_{\textbf{3}}$ and vacancy-ordered monoclinic BaFeO$_{\textbf{2.67}}$

The impact of ordered vacancies on the dynamic stability of perovskites is investigated under the $\textit{ab initio}$ framework with a focus on cubic BaFeO$_{3}$ ($Pm\bar{3}m$) and vacancy-ordered monoclinic BaFeO$_{2.67}$ ($P2_{1}/m$). The harmonic approximation shows that both structures are dynamically unstable at 0 K. For the monoclinic structure, the instability is related to rotational distortions of the Fe coordination tetrahedra near the ordered vacancies. $\textit{Ab initio}$ molecular dynamics simulations in combination with the introduced structural descriptor demonstrate that both structures are stabilized above 130 K. Our results suggest that the ordered vacancies do not significantly alter the critical temperature at which Ba$-$Fe$-$O perovskites are dynamically stabilized. Further, strong anharmonicity for the vacancy-ordered structure above its critical temperature is revealed by a significant asymmetry of the trajectories of O anions near the ordered vacancies.

Complete crystallographic, spin-electronic and magnetic structure of (Co0.2Cr0.2Fe0.2Mn0.2Ni0.2)3O4: Unraveling the suppression of entropy in high entropy oxides

High entropy oxides (HEOs) are a rapidly emerging class of functional materials consisting of multiple principal cations. The original paradigm of HEOs assumes cationic occupations with the highest possible configurational entropy allowed by the composition and crystallographic structure. However, the fundamental question remains on the actual degree of configurational disorder in HEOs, especially, in systems with a low enthalpy barriers for cation anti-site mixing. Considering the experimental limitations due to the presence of multiple principal cations in HEOs, here we utilize a robust and cross-referenced characterization approach using soft X-ray magnetic circular dichroism, hard X-ray absorption spectroscopy, Mössbauer spectroscopy, neutron powder diffraction and SQUID magnetometry to study the competition between crystal field stabilization energy and configurational entropy governing the cation occupation in a spinel HEO (S-HEO), (Co$_{0.2}$Cr$_{0.2}$Fe$_{0.2}$Mn$_{0.2}$Ni$_{0.2}$)$_3$O$_4$. In contrast to the previous studies, the derived complete structural and spin-electronic model, (Co$_{0.6}$Fe$_{0.4}$)(Cr$_{0.3}$Fe$_{0.1}$Mn$_{0.3}$Ni$_{0.3}$)$_2$O$_4$, highlights a significant deviation from the hitherto assumed paradigm of entropy-driven non-preferential distribution of cations in HEOs. An immediate correlation of this result can be drawn with bulk as well as the local element specific magnetic properties, which are intrinsically dictated by cationic occupations in spinels. The real local lattice picture presented here provides an alternate viewpoint on ionic arrangement in HEOs, which is of fundamental interest for predicting and designing their structure-dependent functionalities.
