Dark Coriolis Fields

We argue that the standard post-Newtonian expansion scheme used in General Relativity leaves room for time-space components $g_{ti}$ of the metric to be of the same order of the usual gravitational potential. We explore this possibility and find that such leading order contributions to $g_{ti}$ are related to the Coriolis field of Newton-Cartan gravity. We investigate the possibility that Coriolis fields mimic dark matter effects in disk galaxies. We find solutions from their field equations that sustain the velocity rotation curves in the bulge region and beyond it, notably describing flattish velocity profiles. We dub such solutions Dark Coriolis Fields.

The matter with(in) CPL

We introduce a two-parameter phenomenological extension of the $Λ$CDM model in which the equation of state parameter of the ``dust'' fluid becomes different from zero for redshifts below a transition value $z_t$. Using data from DESI DR2 BAO, DESY5 Sn~Ia and CMB distance priors ($R,l_A,ω_b$) data, we compare our model with the standard CPL parameterization $w_0-w_a$ for dynamical dark energy. Using the Deviance Information Criteria (DIC), we find that the two models are essentially indistinguishable ($Δ$DIC $<$ 2) and preferred over $Λ$CDM with a significance $\geq 3 σ$. We discuss how this parameterization finds a natural interpretation in the context of cosmological backreaction and derive a prediction for the evolution of the growth factor, discussing its impact on low redshift $fσ_8$ measurements.

Asymptotically Schwarzschild solutions in $f(R)$ extension of general relativity

We address the question of how to build a class of $f(R)$ extensions of General Relativity which are compatible with solar system experiments, without making any preliminary assumption on the properties of $f$. The aim is reached by perturbatively solving the modified Einstein equations around a Schwarzschild background and retrieving a posteriori the corresponding $f(R)$. This turns out to be non analytical in $R=0$ and should be intended as the leading correction to the Einstein-Hilbert action in the low curvature limit. The parameters characterizing the $f(R)$ class are then set by constraining the corrections to four different local tests with the observations. The result is a class of $f(R)$ theories built up from a purely bottom-up approach and compatible with the local tests. At a more general level, this result can help constraining exact $f(R)$ models working in Cosmology, since it provides the correct local limit. Further developments and possible extensions of the approach to Cosmology are also discussed.

Induced non-local cosmology

We investigate the cosmological implications of an effective gravitational action, inspired by Sakharov's idea of induced gravity, containing non-local contributions from the operator $\left(\Box +β\right)^{-1} R$. The $β$ term is a novel feature in the panorama of non-local models of gravity, and arises naturally within Sakharov theory from the potential of a non-minimally coupled scalar field after a spontaneous symmetry breaking takes place. In this class of models the non-local contribution can acquire an oscillatory behaviour, thereby avoiding the divergence of the Hubble parameter at late times, which is another characteristic feature of the non-local models treated in the literature. Furthermore, the effective gravitational coupling $G_{\rm eff}$ inherits the oscillatory behaviour, resulting in alternating epochs of stronger and weaker gravity. This framework is argued to have potentially interesting implications for the $H_0$ and the $σ_8$ tensions.

Impact of inhomogeneities on slowly rolling Quintessence: implications for the local variations of the fine-structure constant

We study how the evolution of a Dark Energy Quintessence fluid is modified by the presence of a matter inhomogeneity. To do so, we study linear perturbations of a flat FLRW background containing dust and a slowly rolling scalar field. Under the assumptions of spherical symmetry and a static density contrast, \textit{i.e.} $\dotδ=0$, we obtain simple analytical solutions for perturbations in the matter and dark energy-dominated epochs. As a consequence, we show that perturbations of the scalar field, if a coupling \textit{à la} Bekenstein is assumed, trigger a spatial dependence of the fine-structure "constant" which then varies as $Δα\propto 1/r$. We finally highlight that such variations can be constrained with spectroscopic observations of stars from within our galaxy, therefore offering a new probe of the nature of Dark Energy.

Quantum Cosmology of Fab Four John Theory with Conformable Fractional Derivative

We study a quantization via fractional derivative of a nonminimal derivative coupling cosmological theory, namely, the Fab Four John theory. Its Hamiltonian version presents the issue of fractional powers in the momenta. That problem is solved here by the application of the so-called conformable fractional derivative. This leads to a Wheeler-DeWitt equation of second order, showing that a Bohm-de Broglie interpretation can be constructed. That combination of fractional quantization and Bohmian interpretation provides us a new quantization method, in which the quantum potential is the criterion to say if a quantum solution is acceptable or not to be further studied. We show that a wide range of solutions for the scale factor is possible. Among all of those, a bouncing solution analogous to the perfect fluid cosmology seems to deserve special attention.

Bouncing and Cyclic Quantum Primordial Universes and the Ordering Problem

In a Bohmian quantum cosmology scenario, we investigate some quantum effects on the evolution of the primordial universe arising from the adoption of an alternative non-trivial ordering to the quantization of the constrained Hamiltonian of a minimally coupled scalar field. The Wheeler-DeWitt equation has a contribution from the change in factor ordering, hence there are new quantum effects. We compare the results between the non-trivial and the trivial ordering cases, showing that the classical limit is valid for both orderings, but new bouncing and cyclic solutions are present in the non-trivial case. Additionally, we show that the non-singular solutions already present in the trivial ordering formalism keep valid.

Classical and quantum cosmology of Fab Four John theories

We present here a quantum cosmological model with Bohm-de Broglie interpretation of the theory described by a combination of two terms of the Fab Four cosmological theory. The first term is the John Lagrangian and the second is a potential representing matter content to avoid classical trivial solutions. This model has two free functions that provide an adjustment mechanism known classically as self-tuning. The self-tuning is a way to address the cosmological constant problem by allowing a partial break of symmetry in the scalar field sector. The Fab Four is the most general set of self-tuning scalar-tensor gravitational theories in four dimensions. The minisuperspace Hamiltonian thus obtained from this combination of Fab Four terms has fractional powers in the momenta, leading to a problem in applying canonical quantization. We have solved this problem by generalizing the canonical quantization rule using the so-called conformable fractional derivative. We show that this analysis leads to both singular and bouncing (non-singular) solutions, depending on the initial conditions over the scale factor and the homogeneous scalar field, and also depending on the free functions mentioned. This provides an adjustment mechanism in analogy with the classical self-tuning of the Fab Four, but with another interpretation.

Late-times asymptotic equation of state for a class of nonlocal theories of gravity

We investigate the behavior of the asymptotic late-times effective equation of state for a class of nonlocal theories of gravity. These theories modify the Einstein-Hilbert Lagrangian introducing terms containing negative powers of the d'Alembert operator acting on the Ricci scalar. We find that imposing vanishing initial conditions for the nonlocal content during the radiation-dominated epoch implies the same asymptotic late-times behavior for most of these models. In terms of the effective equation of state of the universe, we find that asymptotically $ω_{ \rm eff} \rightarrow -1$, approaching the value given by a cosmological constant. On the other hand, unlike in the case of $Λ$CDM, the Hubble factor is a monotonic growing function that diverges asymptotically. We argue that this behavior is not a coincidence and discuss under which conditions this is to be expected in these nonlocal models.
