Axion Landscape Cosmology

We study the cosmology of complex multi-axion theories. With O(100) fields and GUT scale energies these theories contain a vast number of vacua, inflationary trajectories and a natural dark matter candidate. We demonstrate that the vacua are stable on cosmological timescales. In a single theory, both large- and small-field inflation are possible and yield a broad range of cosmological observables, and vacuum decay can be followed by a relatively large number (> 60) of efolds of inflation. Light axions stabilized by gravitational instantons may constitute a natural dark matter candidate that does not spoil an axion solution to the strong CP problem.

Damped perturbations in the no-boundary state

We evaluate the no-boundary path integral exactly in a Bianchi IX minisuperspace with two scale factors. In this model the no-boundary proposal can be implemented by requiring one scale factor to be zero initially together with a judiciously chosen regularity condition on the momentum conjugate to the second scale factor. Taking into account the non-linear backreaction of the perturbations we recover the predictions of the original semiclassical no-boundary proposal. In particular we find that large perturbations are strongly damped, consistent with vacuum state wave functions.

Systematics of Aligned Axions

We describe a novel technique that renders theories of $N$ axions tractable, and more generally can be used to efficiently analyze a large class of periodic potentials of arbitrary dimension. Such potentials are complex energy landscapes with a number of local minima that scales as $\sqrt{N!}$, and so for large $N$ appear to be analytically and numerically intractable. Our method is based on uncovering a set of approximate symmetries that exist in addition to the $N$ periods. These approximate symmetries, which are exponentially close to exact, allow us to locate the minima very efficiently and accurately and to analyze other characteristics of the potential. We apply our framework to evaluate the diameters of flat regions suitable for slow-roll inflation, which unifies, corrects and extends several forms of "axion alignment" previously observed in the literature. We find that in a broad class of random theories, the potential is smooth over diameters enhanced by $N^{3/2}$ compared to the typical scale of the potential. A Mathematica implementation of our framework is available online.

The Real No-Boundary Wave Function in Lorentzian Quantum Cosmology

It is shown that the standard no-boundary wave function has a natural expression in terms of a Lorentzian path integral with its contour defined by Picard-Lefschetz theory. The wave function is real, satisfies the Wheeler-DeWitt equation and predicts an ensemble of asymptotically classical, inflationary universes with nearly-Gaussian fluctuations and with a smooth semiclassical origin.

Axions of Evil

We provide a systematic framework for theories of multiple axions. We discover a novel type of "alignment" that renders even very complex theories analytically tractable. Theories with about 100 axions and random parameters have an exponential number of meta-stable vacua and accommodate a diverse range of inflationary observables. Very light fields can serve as dark matter with the correct abundance. Tunneling from a minimum with large vacuum energy can occur via a thin-wall instanton and be followed by a sufficient period of slow-roll inflation that ends in a vacuum containing axion dark matter and a cosmological constant with a value consistent with observation. Hence, this model can reproduce many macroscopic features of our universe without tuned parameters.

Sharp Predictions from Eternal Inflation Patches in D-brane Inflation

We numerically generate the six-dimensional landscape of D3-brane inflation and identify patches of eternal inflation near sufficiently flat inflection points of the potential. We show that reasonable measures that select patches of eternal inflation in the landscape yield sharp predictions for the spectral properties of primordial perturbations on observable scales. These include a scalar tilt of .936, a running of the scalar tilt -.00103, undetectably small tensors and non-Gaussianity, and no observable spatial curvature. Our results explicitly demonstrate that precision cosmology probes the combination of the statistical properties of the string landscape and the measure implied by the universe's quantum state.

Phase Diagram of Dynamical Twisted Mass Wilson Fermions at Finite Isospin Chemical Potential

We consider the phase diagram of twisted mass Wilson fermions of two-flavor QCD in the parameter space of the quark mass, the isospin chemical potential, the twist angle and the lattice spacing. This work extends earlier studies in the continuum and those at zero chemical potential. We evaluate the phase diagram as well as the spectrum of the (pseudo-)Goldstone bosons using the chiral Lagrangian for twisted mass Wilson fermions at non-zero isospin chemical potential. The phases are obtained from a mean field analysis. At zero twist angle we find that already an infinitesimal isospin chemical potential destroys the Aoki phase. The reason is that in this phase we have massless Goldstone bosons with a non-zero isospin charge. At finite twist angle only two different phases are present, one phase which is continuously connected to the Bose condensed phase at non-zero chemical potential and another phase which is continuously connected to the normal phase. For either zero or maximal twist the phase diagram is more complicated as the saddle point equations allow for more solutions.
