Learning Coulomb Potentials and Beyond with Free Fermions in Continuous Space

The first-principles formulation of quantum mechanics relevant for quantum chemistry and trapped quantum gases involves particles in the continuous space $\mathbb R^d$. We present a unified framework and modular algorithm for learning external potentials $V$ with free-fermion models in the continuum. Compared to the lattice-based approaches, the continuum presents new mathematical challenges: the state space is infinite-dimensional and the Hamiltonian contains the Laplacian, which is unbounded in the continuum and produces an unbounded speed of information propagation. We address these through novel optimization methods and information-propagation bounds in combination with a priori regularity assumptions on the external potential. The resulting algorithm provides a unified and robust approach to learn parametric interactions (e.g., Coulomb potentials or periodic potentials) and general smooth functions. Our results lay the foundation for a scalable and generalizable toolkit to learn Hamiltonians in continuous space.

On the thermodynamic limit of interacting fermions in the continuum

We study the dynamics of non-relativistic fermions in $\mathbb R^d$ interacting through a pair potential. Employing methods developed by Buchholz in the framework of resolvent algebras, we identify an extension of the CAR algebra where the dynamics acts as a group of *-automorphisms, which are continuous in time in all sectors for fixed particle numbers. In addition, we identify a suitable dense subalgebra where the time evolution is also strongly continuous. Finally, we briefly discuss how this framework could be used to construct KMS states in the future.

On Lieb-Robinson bounds for a class of continuum fermions

We consider the quantum dynamics of a many-fermion system in $\mathbb R^d$ with an ultraviolet regularized pair interaction as previously studied in [M. Gebert, B. Nachtergaele, J. Reschke, and R. Sims, Ann. Henri Poincar\'e 21.11 (2020)]. We provide a Lieb-Robinson bound under substantially relaxed assumptions on the potentials. We also improve the associated one-body Lieb-Robinson bound on $L^2$-overlaps to an almost ballistic one (i.e., an almost linear light cone) under the same relaxed assumptions. Applications include the existence of the infinite-volume dynamics and clustering of ground states in the presence of a spectral gap. We also develop a fermionic continuum notion of conditional expectation and use it to approximate time-evolved fermionic observables by local ones, which opens the door to other applications of the Lieb-Robinson bounds.

Thermal Area Law for Lattice Bosons

A physical system is said to satisfy a thermal area law if the mutual information between two adjacent regions in the Gibbs state is controlled by the area of their boundary. Thermal area laws have been derived for systems with bounded local interactions such as quantum spin systems. However, for lattice bosons these arguments break down because the interactions are unbounded. We rigorously derive a thermal area law for a class of bosonic Hamiltonians in any dimension which includes the paradigmatic Bose-Hubbard model. The main idea to go beyond bounded interactions is to introduce a quasi-free reference state with artificially decreased chemical potential by means of a double Peierls-Bogoliubov estimate.

Non-Fock Ground States in the Translation-Invariant Nelson Model Revisited Non-Perturbatively

The Nelson model, describing a quantum mechanical particle linearly coupled to a bosonic field, exhibits the infrared problem in the sense that no ground state exists at arbitrary total momentum. However, passing to a non-Fock representation, one can prove the existence of so-called dressed one-particle states. In this article, we give a simple non-perturbative proof for the existence of such one-particle states at arbitrary coupling strength and for almost all total momenta in a physically motivated momentum region. Our results hold both for the non- and the semi-relativistic Nelson model.

Ground States for Infrared Renormalized Translation-Invariant Non-Relativistic QED

We consider a translation-invariant Pauli-Fierz model describing a non-relativistic charged quantum mechanical particle interacting with the quantized electromagnetic field. The charged particle may be spinless or have spin one half. We decompose the Hamiltonian with respect to the total momentum into a direct integral of so called fiber Hamiltonians. We perform an infrared renormalization, in the sense of norm resolvent convergence, for each fiber Hamiltonian, which has the physical interpretation of removing an infinite photon cloud. We show that the renormalized fiber Hamiltonians have a ground state for almost all values for the total momentum with modulus less than one.

FKN Formula and Ground State Energy for the Spin Boson Model with External Magnetic Field

We consider the spin boson model with external magnetic field. We prove a path integral formula for the heat kernel, known as Feynman-Kac-Nelson (FKN) formula. We use this path integral representation to express the ground state energy as a stochastic integral. Based on this connection, we determine the expansion coefficients of the ground state energy with respect to the magnetic field strength and express them in terms of correlation functions of a continuous Ising model. From a recently proven correlation inequality, we can then deduce that the second order derivative is finite. As an application, we show existence of ground states in infrared-singular situations.

Bose-Einstein condensation on hyperbolic spaces

A well-known conjecture in mathematical physics asserts that the interacting Bose gas exhibits Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in the thermodynamic limit. We consider the Bose gas on certain hyperbolic spaces. In this setting, one obtains a short proof of BEC in the infinite-volume limit from the existence of a volume-independent spectral gap of the Laplacian.

Correlation Bound for a One-Dimensional Continuous Long-Range Ising Model

We consider a measure given as the continuum limit of a one-dimensional Ising model with long-range translationally invariant interactions. Mathematically, the measure can be described by a self-interacting Poisson driven jump process. We prove a correlation inequality, estimating the magnetic susceptibility of this model, which holds for small $L^1$-norm of the interaction function. The bound on the magnetic susceptibility has applications in quantum field theory and can be used to prove existence of ground states for the spin boson model.

On Existence of Ground States in the Spin Boson Model

We show the existence of ground states in the massless spin boson model without any infrared regularization. Our proof is non-perturbative and relies on a compactness argument. It works for arbitrary values of the coupling constant under the hypothesis that the second derivative of the ground state energy as a function of a constant external magnetic field is bounded.

Thermal Ionization for Short-Range Potentials

We study a concrete model of a confined particle in form of a Schrödinger operator with a compactly supported smooth potential coupled to a bosonic field at positive temperature. We show, that the model exhibits thermal ionization for any positive temperature, provided the coupling is sufficiently small. Mathematically, one has to rule out that zero is an eigenvalue of the self-adjoint generator of time evolution - the Liouvillian. This will be done by using positive commutator methods with dilations in the space of scattering functions. Our proof relies on a spatial cutoff in the coupling but does otherwise not require any unnatural restrictions.
