Missing spectral weight in a heavy-fermion system far above N\'eel temperature

The competition between the Kondo spin-screening effect and the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction in heavy-fermion systems drives the quantum phase transition between the magnetically ordered and the heavy-Fermi-liquid ground states. Despite intensive investigations of heavy quasiparticles on the Kondo-screened side of the quantum phase transition and of their breakdown at the quantum critical point, the magnetically ordering side has not systematically been studied. Using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy, we report a suppression of the Kondo quasiparticle weight in CeCu$_{6-x}$Au$_x$ samples on the antiferromagnetic side of the quantum phase transition at temperatures as much as two orders of magnitude above the N\'{e}el temperature $T_\text{N}$. With our systematic investigations into the high-temperature, paramagnetic region on the antiferromagnetic side of the phase diagram of CeCu$_{6-x}$Au$_x$, i.e., with $x =$ 0.2, 0.3, and 0.5, we show that the suppression results from a quantum frustration effect induced by the temperature-independent RKKY interaction. Hence, our results emphasize that besides critical fluctuations, the RKKY interaction may play an important role in the quantum-critical scenario.

Coexistence of local magnetism and superconductivity in the heavy-fermion CeRh$_2$As$_2$ revealed by $\mu$SR studies

The superconducting (SC) state ($T_\mathrm{c}$ = 0.3 K) of the heavy-fermion compound CeRh$_2$As$_2$, which undergoes an unusual field-induced transition to another high-field SC state, emerges from an unknown ordered state below $T_\mathrm{o}$ = 0.55 K. While an electronic multipolar order of itinerant Ce-4$f$ states was proposed to account for the $T_\mathrm{o}$ phase, the exact order parameter has not been known to date. Here, we report on muon spin relaxation ($\mu$SR) studies of the magnetic and SC properties in CeRh$_2$As$_2$ single crystals at low temperatures. We reveal a magnetic origin of the $T_\mathrm{o}$ order by identifying a spontaneous internal field below $T_\mathrm{o}$ = 0.55 K. Furthermore, we find evidence of a microscopic coexistence of local magnetism with bulk superconductivity. Our findings open the possibility that the $T_\mathrm{o}$ phase involves both dipole and higher order Ce-4$f$ moment degrees of freedom and accounts for the unusual non-Fermi liquid behavior.

Kondo coherence versus superradiance in THz radiation-driven heavy-fermion systems

In strongly correlated systems such as heavy-fermion materials, the coherent superposition of localized and mobile spin states leads to the formation of Kondo resonant states, which on a dense, periodic array of Kondo ions develop lattice coherence. Characteristically, these quantum-coherent superposition states respond to a terahertz (THz) excitation by a delayed THz pulse on the scale of the material's Kondo energy scale and, hence, independent of the pump-light intensity. However, delayed response is also typical for superradiance in an ensemble of excited atoms. In this case, quantum coherence is established by the coupling to an external, electromagnetic mode and, hence, dependent on the pump-light intensity. In the present work, we investigate the physical origin of the delayed pulse, i.e., inherent, correlation-induced versus light-induced coherence, in the prototypical heavy-fermion compound CeCu_5.9Au_0.1. We study the delay, duration and amplitude of the THz pulse at various temperatures in dependence on the electric-field strength of the incident THz excitation, ranging from 0.3 to 15.2 kV/cm. We observe a robust delayed response at approximately 6 ps with an amplitude proportional to the amplitude of the incident THz wave. This is consistent with theoretical expectation for the Kondo-like coherence and thus provides compelling evidence for the dominance of condensed-matter versus optical coherence in the heavy-fermion compound.

Unconventional fully-gapped superconductivity in the heavy-fermion metal CeCu$_2$Si$_2$

The heavy-fermion metal CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ was the first discovered unconventional, non-phonon-mediated superconductor, and for a long time was believed to exhibit single-band $d$-wave superconductivity, as inferred from various measurements hinting at a nodal gap structure. More recently however, measurements using a range of techniques at very low temperatures ($T \lessapprox 0.1$ K) provided evidence for a fully-gapped superconducting order parameter. In this Colloquium, after a brief historical overview we survey the apparently conflicting results of numerous experimental studies on this compound. We then address the different theoretical scenarios which have been applied to understand the particular gap structure, including both isotropic (sign-preserving) and anisotropic two-band $s$-wave superconductivity, as well as an effective two-band $d$-wave model, where the latter can explain the currently available experimental data on CeCu$_2$Si$_2$. The lessons from CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ are expected to help uncover the Cooper-pair states in other unconventional, fully-gapped superconductors with strongly correlated carriers, and in particular highlight the rich variety of such states enabled by orbital degrees of freedom.

Phonon renormalization effects accompanying the 6 K anomaly in the Quantum Spin Liquid Candidate $\kappa$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu$_{2}$(CN)$_{3}$

The low-temperature state of the quantum spin liquid candidate $\kappa$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu$_{2}$(CN)$_{3}$ emerges via an anomaly at $T^{*}\sim6$ K. Although signatures of this anomaly have been revealed in various quantities, its origin has remained unclear. Here we report inelastic neutron scattering measurements on single crystals of $\kappa$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu$_{2}$(CN)$_{3}$, aiming at studying phonon renormalization effects at $T^{*}$. A drastic change was observed in the phonon damping across $T^{*}$ for a breathing mode of BEDT-TTF dimers at $E=4.7$ meV. The abrupt change in the phonon damping is attributed to a phase transition into a valence bond solid state based on an effective model describing the spin-charge coupling in this dimer-Mott system.

Lattice dynamics coupled to charge and spin degrees of freedom in the molecular dimer-Mott insulator $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu[N(CN)$_{2}$]Cl

Inelastic neutron scattering measurements on the molecular dimer-Mott insulator $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu[N(CN)$_{2}$]Cl reveal a phonon anomaly in a wide temperature range. Starting from $T_{\rm ins}\sim50$-$60$ K where the charge gap opens, the low-lying optical phonon modes become overdamped upon cooling towards the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature $T_\mathrm{N} = 27$ K, where also a ferroelectric ordering at $T_{\rm FE} \approx T_{\rm N}$ occurs. Conversely, the phonon damping becomes small again when spins and charges are ordered below $T_\mathrm{N}$, while no change of the lattice symmetry is observed across $T_\mathrm{N}$ in neutron diffraction measurements. We assign the phonon anomalies to structural fluctuations coupled to charge and spin degrees of freedom in the BEDT-TTF molecules.

Terahertz Conductivity of Heavy-fermion Systems from Time-resolved Spectroscopy

The Drude model describes the free-electron conduction in simple metals, governed by the freedom that the mobile electrons have within the material. In strongly correlated systems, however, a significant deviation of the optical conductivity from the simple metallic Drude behavior is observed. Here, we investigate the optical conductivity of the heavy-fermion system CeCu$_{\mathrm{6-x}}$Au$_{\mathrm{x}}$, using time-resolved, phase-sensitive terahertz spectroscopy. Terahertz electric field creates two types of excitations in heavy-fermion materials: First, the intraband excitations that leave the heavy quasiparticles intact. Second, the resonant interband transitions between the heavy and light parts of the hybridized conduction band that break the Kondo singlet. We find that the Kondo-singlet breaking interband transitions do not create a Drude peak, while the Kondo-retaining intraband excitations yield the expected Drude response; thus, making it possible to separate these two fundamentally different correlated contributions to the optical conductivity.

Magnetic frustration in a metallic fcc lattice

Magnetic frustration in metals is scarce and hard to pinpoint, but exciting due to the possibility of the emergence of fascinating novel phases. The cubic intermetallic compound HoInCu$_4$ with all holmium atoms on an fcc lattice, exhibits partial magnetic frustration, yielding a ground state where half of the Ho moments remain without long-range order, as evidenced by our neutron scattering experiments. The substitution of In with Cd results in HoCdCu$_4$ in a full breakdown of magnetic frustration. Consequently we found a fully ordered magnetic structure in our neutron diffraction experiments. These findings are in agreement with the local energy scales and crystal electric field excitations, which we determined from specific heat and inelastic neutron scattering data. The electronic density of states for the itinerant bands acts as tuning parameter for the ratio between nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor interactions and thus for magnetic frustration.

A RIXS investigation of the crystal-field splitting of Sm$^{3+}$ in SmB$_6$

The crystal-field (CF) splitting of the $^6H_{5/2}$ Hund's rule ground state of Sm$^{3+}$ in the strongly correlated topological insulator SmB$_6$ has been determined with high resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Sm M$_5$ edge. The valence selectivity of RIXS allows isolating the crystal-field-split excited multiplets of the Sm$^{3+}$ (4$f^5$) configuration from those of Sm$^{2+}$ (4$f^6$) in intermediate valent SmB$_6$. The very large energy range of RIXS allows the crystal-field analysis of a high lying multiplet at about 2.4\,eV that has the same total angular momentum $J$ as the ground state so that ambiguities due to the elastic tail can be avoided. We find that the $Γ_7$ doublet and $Γ_8$ quartet of the $^6H_{5/2}$ Hund's rule ground state are split by $Δ^{CF}_{^6H_{5/2}}$\,=\,20$\pm$10\,meV which sets an upper limit for the 4$f$ band width. This indicates an extremely large mass renormalization from the band structure value, pointing out the need to consider the coefficients of fractional parentage for the hopping of the 4$f$ electrons.

Fermi volume evolution and crystal field excitations in heavy-fermion compounds probed by time-domain terahertz spectroscopy

We measure the quasiparticle weight in the heavy-fermion compound CeCu$_{6-x}$Au$_{x}$ ($x=0,\ 0.1$) by time-resolved THz spectroscopy for temperatures from 2 up to 300\,K. This method distinguishes contributions from the heavy Kondo band and from the crystal-electric-field satellite bands by different THz response delay times. We find that the formation of heavy bands is controlled by an exponentially enhanced, high-energy Kondo scale once the crystal-electric-field states become thermally occupied. We corroborate these observations by temperature-dependent dynamical mean-field calculations for the multi-orbital Anderson lattice model and discuss consequences for quantum critical scenarios.

Determining the local low-energy excitations in the Kondo semimetal CeRu$_4$Sn$_6$ using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

We have investigated the local low-energy excitations in CeRu$_4$Sn$_6$, a material discussed recently in the framework of strongly correlated Weyl semimetals, by means of Ce $M_5$ resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). The availability of both $^2$F$_\frac{5}{2}$ and $^2$F$_\frac{7}{2}$ excitations of the Ce $4f^1$ configuration in the spectra allows for the determination of the crystal-electric field parameters that explain quantitatively the temperature dependence and anisotropy of the magnetic susceptibility. The absence of an azimuthal dependence in the spectra indicates that all crystal-electric field states are close to being rotational symmetric. We show further that the non-negligible impact of the $\check A_6^0$ parameter on the ground state of CeRu$_4$Sn$_6$ leads to a reduction of the magnetic moment due to multiplet intermixing. The RIXS results are consistent with inelastic neutron scattering (INS) data and are compared to the predictions from \textsl{ab-initio} based electronic structure calculations.

Evolution of the partially frustrated magnetic order in CePd$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$Al

We report on a single-crystal neutron diffraction study of the evolution of the antiferromagnetic order in the heavy-fermion compound CePd$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$Al which exhibits partial geometric frustration due to its distorted Kagomé structure. The magnetic structure is found to be unchanged with a propagation vector $Q_\mathrm{AF} \approx (0.5~0~0.35)$ for all Ni concentrations $x$ up to $x_c \approx 0.14$. Upon approaching the quantum critical concentration $x_c$, the ordered moment vanishes linearly with Néel temperature $T_{\rm N}$, in good agreement with CePdAl under hydrostatic pressure. For all Ni concentrations, substantial short-range magnetic correlations are observed above $T_{\rm N}$ as a result of frustration.

Entropy evolution in the magnetic phases of partially frustrated CePdAl

In the heavy-fermion metal CePdAl long-range antiferromagnetic order coexists with geometric frustration of one third of the Ce moments. At low temperatures the Kondo effect tends to screen the frustrated moments. We use magnetic fields $B$ to suppress the Kondo screening and study the magnetic phase diagram and the evolution of the entropy with $B$ employing thermodynamic probes. We estimate the frustration by introducing a definition of the frustration parameter based on the enhanced entropy, a fundamental feature of frustrated systems. In the field range where the Kondo screening is suppressed the liberated moments tend to maximize the magnetic entropy and strongly enhance the frustration. Based on our experiments, this field range may be a promising candidate to search for a quantum spin liquid.

Signature of frustrated moments in quantum critical CePd$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$Al

CePdAl with Ce $4f$ moments forming a distorted kagomé network is one of the scarce materials exhibiting Kondo physics and magnetic frustration simultaneously. As a result, antiferromagnetic (AF) order setting in at $T_{\mathrm{N}} = 2.7$~K encompasses only two thirds of the Ce moments. We report measurements of the specific heat, $C$, and the magnetic Grüneisen parameter, $Γ_{\rm mag}$, on single crystals of CePd$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$Al with $x\leq 0.16$ at temperatures down to 0.05~K and magnetic fields $B$ up to $8$~T. Field-induced quantum criticality for various concentrations is observed with the critical field decreasing to zero at $x_c\approx 0.15$. Remarkably, two-dimensional (2D) AF quantum criticality of Hertz-Millis-Moriya type arises for $x=0.05$ and $x=0.1$ at the suppression of 3D magnetic order. Furthermore, $Γ_{\rm mag}(B)$ shows an additional contribution near $2.5$~T for all concentrations which is ascribed to correlations of the frustrated one third of Ce moments.

CePdAl - a Kondo lattice with partial frustration

Magnetic frustration, which is well-defined in insulating systems with localized magnetic moments, yields exotic ground states like spin ices, spin glasses, or spin liquids. In metals magnetic frustration is less well defined because of the incipient delocalization of magnetic moments by the interaction with conduction electrons, viz., the Kondo effect. Hence, the Kondo effect and magnetic frustration are antithetic phenomena. Here we present experimental data of electrical resistivity, magnetization, specific heat and neutron diffraction on CePdAl, which is one of the rare examples of a geometrically frustrated Kondo lattice, demonstrating that the combination of Kondo effect and magnetic frustration leads to an unusual ground state.

Anomalous Microwave Surface Resistance of CeCu6

We present surface resistance measurements of the archetypical heavy-fermion compound CeCu6 for frequencies between 3.7 and 18 GHz and temperatures from 1.2 to 6 K. The measurements were performed with superconducting stripline resonators that allow simultaneous measurements at multiple frequencies. The surface resistance of CeCu6 exhibits a pronounced decrease below 3 K, in consistence with dc resistivity. The low-temperature frequency dependence of the surface resistance follows a power law with exponent 2/3. While for conventional metals this would be consistent with the anomalous skin effect, we discuss the present situation of a heavy-fermion metal, where this frequency dependence might instead stem from the influence of electronic correlations.
