Extremal Khovanov homology of Turaev genus one links

The Turaev genus of a link can be thought of as a way of measuring how non-alternating a link is. A link is Turaev genus zero if and only if it is alternating, and in this viewpoint, links with large Turaev genus are very non-alternating. In this paper, we study Turaev genus one links, a class of links which includes almost alternating links. We prove that the Khovanov homology of a Turaev genus one link is isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}$ in at least one of its extremal quantum gradings. As an application, we compute or nearly compute the maximal Thurston Bennequin number of a Turaev genus one link.

Equivalence of edge bicolored graphs on surfaces

Consider the collection of edge bicolorings of a graph that is cellularly embedded on an orientable surface. In this work, we count the number of equivalence classes of such colorings under two relations: reversing colors around a face and reversing colors around a vertex. In the case of the plane, this is well studied, but for other surfaces, the computation is more subtle. While this question can be stated purely graph theoretically, it has interesting applications in knot theory.

Invariants for Turaev genus one links

The Turaev genus defines a natural filtration on knots where Turaev genus zero knots are precisely the alternating knots. We show that the signature of a Turaev genus one knot is determined by the number of components in its all-A Kauffman state, the number of positive crossings, and its determinant. We also show that either the leading or trailing coefficient of the Jones polynomial of a Turaev genus one link (or an almost alternating link) has absolute value one.

The Head and Tail of the Colored Jones Polynomial for Adequate Knots

We show that the head and tail functions of the colored Jones polynomial of adequate links are the product of head and tail functions of the colored Jones polynomial of alternating links that can be read-off an adequate diagram of the link. We apply this to strengthen a theorem of Kalfagianni, Futer and Purcell on the fiberedness of adequate links.

A Turaev surface approach to Khovanov homology

We introduce Khovanov homology for ribbon graphs and show that the Khovanov homology of a certain ribbon graph embedded on the Turaev surface of a link is isomorphic to the Khovanov homology of the link (after a grading shift). We also present a spanning quasi-tree model for the Khovanov homology of a ribbon graph.

Rogers-Ramanujan type identities and the head and tail of the colored Jones polynomial

We study the head and tail of the colored Jones polynomial while focusing mainly on alternating links. Various ways to compute the colored Jones polynomial for a given link give rise to combinatorial identities for those power series. We further show that the head and tail functions only depend on the reduced checkerboard graphs of the knot diagram. Moreover the class of head and tail functions of prime alternating links forms a monoid.

A twisted dimer model for knots

We develop a dimer model for the Alexander polynomial of a knot. This recovers Kauffman's state sum model for the Alexander polynomial using the language of dimers. By providing some additional structure we are able to extend this model to give a state sum formula for the twisted Alexander polynomial of a knot depending on a representation of the knot group.

On the recurrence of coefficients in the Lück-Fuglede-Kadison determinant

In this note, we survey results concerning variations of the Lück-Fuglede-Kadison determinant with respect to the base group. Further, we discuss recurrences of coefficients in the determinant for certain distinguished base groups. The note is based on a talk that the second author gave at the "Segundas Jornadas de Teoría de Números", Madrid, 2007.

Alternating sum formulae for the determinant and other link invariants

A classical result states that the determinant of an alternating link is equal to the number of spanning trees in a checkerboard graph of an alternating connected projection of the link. We generalize this result to show that the determinant is the alternating sum of the number of quasi-trees of genus j of the dessin of a non-alternating link. Furthermore, we obtain formulas for other link invariants by counting quantities on dessins. In particular we will show that the $j$-th coefficient of the Jones polynomial is given by sub-dessins of genus less or equal to $j$.

The Jones polynomial and graphs on surfaces

The Jones polynomial of an alternating link is a certain specialization of the Tutte polynomial of the (planar) checkerboard graph associated to an alternating projection of the link. The Bollobas-Riordan-Tutte polynomial generalizes the Tutte polynomial of planar graphs to graphs that are embedded in closed oriented surfaces of higher genus. In this paper we show that the Jones polynomial of any link can be obtained from the Bollobas-Riordan-Tutte polynomial of a certain oriented ribbon graph associated to a link projection. We give some applications of this approach.

Mahler measure under variations of the base group

We study properties of a generalization of the Mahler measure to elements in group rings, in terms of the Lueck-Fuglede-Kadison determinant. Our main focus is the variation of the Mahler measure when the base group is changed. In particular, we study how to obtain the Mahler measure over an infinite group as limit of Mahler measures over finite groups, for example, in the classical case of the free abelian group or the infinite dihedral group, and others.

Torus Knot complements: A natural series for the natural logarithm

Lueck expressed the Gromov norm of a knot complement in terms of an infinite series that can be computed from a presentation of the fundamental group of the knot complement. In this note we show that Lueck's formula, applied to torus knots, yields surprising power series expansions for the logarithm function. This generalizes an infinite series of Lehmer for the natural logarithm of 4.

On the Head and the Tail of the Colored Jones Polynomial

The colored Jones polynomial is a series of one variable Laurent polynomials J(K,n) associated with a knot K in 3-space. We will show that for an alternating knot K the absolute values of the first and the last three leading coefficients of J(K,n) are independent of n when n is sufficiently large. Computation of sample knots indicates that this should be true for any fixed leading coefficient of the colored Jones polynomial for alternating knots. As a corollary we get a Volume-ish Theorem for the colored Jones Polynomial.

Property P for Knots admitting Certain Gabai Disks

We show that if a knot has a minimal spanning surface that admits certain Gabai disks, then this knot has Property P. As one of the applications we extend and simplify a recent result of Menasco and Zhang that closed 3-braid knots have Property P. Other applications are given.

On McMullen's and other inequalities for the Thurston norm of link complements

In a recent paper, McMullen showed an inequality between the Thurston norm and the Alexander norm of a 3-manifold. This generalizes the well-known fact that twice the genus of a knot is bounded from below by the degree of the Alexander polynomial. We extend the Bennequin inequality for links to an inequality for all points of the Thurston norm, if the manifold is a link complement. We compare these two inequalities on two classes of closed braids. In an additional section we discuss a conjectured inequality due to Morton for certain points of the Thurston norm. We prove Morton's conjecture for closed 3-braids.

The Bennequin number of n-trivial closed n-braids is negative

A famous result of Bennequin states that for any braid representative of the unknot the Bennequin number is negative. We will extend this result to all n-trivial closed n-braids. This is a class of infinitely many knots closed under taking mirror images. Our proof relies on a non-standard parametrization of the Homfly polynomial.
