Naked Singularities, Topological Defects and Brane Couplings

A conical defect in (2+1) anti-de Sitter space is a BTZ solution with a negative mass parameter. This is a naked singularity, but a rather harmless one: it is a point particle. Naturally, the energy density and the spacetime curvature have a delta-like singularity at the apex of the conical defect, but that doesn't give rise to any unphysical situations. Since the conical solution implies the presence of a source, applying reverse enginnering, one can identify the coupling term that is required in the action to account for that source. In that way, a relation is established between the identification operation that gives rise to the topological defect and the interaction term in the action that produces it. This idea has a natural extension to higher dimensions, where instead of a point particle (zero-brane) one finds membranes of even spatial dimensions (p-branes, with p=2n). The generalization to other abelian and nonabelian gauge theories --including (super-) gravities-- is fairly straightforward: the 2n-brane couple to a (2n+1) Chern-Simons form. The construction suggests a generic role for Chern-Simons forms as the natural way to couple a gauge connection to a brane and avoids the inconsistency that results from the minimal coupling between a brane and a fundamental p-form field.

Stable p-branes in Chern-Simons AdS supergravities

We construct static codimension-two branes in any odd dimension D, with negative cosmological constant, and show that they are exact solutions of Chern-Simons (super)gravity theory for (super)AdS coupled to external sources. The stability of these solutions is analyzed by counting the number of preserved supersymmetries. It is shown that static massive (D-3)-branes are unstable unless some suitable gauge fields are added and the brane is extremal. In particular, in three dimensions, a 0-brane is recognized as the negative mass counterpart of the BTZ black hole. For these 0-branes, we write explicitly electromagnetically charged BPS states with various number of preserved supersymmetries within the OSp(p|2) x OSp(q|2) supergroups. In five dimensions, we prove that stable 2-branes with electromagnetic charge always exist for the generic supergroup SU(2,2|N), where N is different than 4. For the special case N=4, in which the CS supergravity requires the addition of a nontrivial gauge field configuration in order to preserve maximal number of degrees of freedom, we show for two different static 2-branes that they are BPS states (one of which is the ground state), and from the corresponding algebra of charges we show that the energy is bounded from below. In higher dimensions, our results admit a straightforward generalization, although there are presumably more solutions corresponding to different intersections of the elementary objects.

Background-independent charges in Topologically Massive Gravity

We construct background-independent Noether charges in Topologically Massive Gravity with negative cosmological constant using its first-order formulation. The procedure is carried out by keeping track of the surface terms in the variation of the action, regardless the value of the gravitational Chern-Simons coupling $μ$. In particular, this method provides a definition of conserved quantities for solutions at the chiral point $μl = 1$ ($l$ is the AdS radius) that contain logarithmic terms (Log Gravity). It is also shown that the charge formula gives a finite result for warped AdS black holes without the need for any background-substraction procedure.

Couplings between Chern-Simons gravities and 2p-branes

The interaction between Chern-Simons (CS) theories and localized external sources (2p-branes) is analyzed. This interaction generalizes the minimal coupling between a point charge (0-brane) and a gauge connection. The external currents that define the 2p-branes are covariantly constant (D-2p-1)-forms coupled to (2p-1) CS forms. The general expression for the sources --charged with respect to the corresponding gauge algebra-- is presented, focusing on two special cases: 0-branes and (D-3)-branes. In any dimension, 0-branes are constructed as topological defects produced by a surface deficit of (D-2)-sphere in AdS space, and they are not constant curvature spaces for D>3. They correspond to dimensionally continued black holes with negative mass. On the other hand, in the case of CS (super) gravities, the (D-3)-branes are naked conical singularities (topological defects) obtained by identification of points with a Killing vector. In 2+1 dimensions, extremal spinning branes of this type are BPS states. Stable (D-3)-branes are shown to exist also in higher dimensions, as well. Classical field equations are also discussed and in the presence of sources there is a large number of inequivalent and disconnected sectors in solution space.

Topological regularization and self-duality in four-dimensional anti-de Sitter gravity

It is shown that the addition of a topological invariant (Gauss-Bonnet term) to the anti-de Sitter (AdS) gravity action in four dimensions recovers the standard regularization given by holographic renormalization procedure. This crucial step makes possible the inclusion of an odd parity invariant (Pontryagin term) whose coupling is fixed by demanding an asymptotic (anti) self-dual condition on the Weyl tensor. This argument allows to find the dual point of the theory where the holographic stress tensor is related to the boundary Cotton tensor as $T_{j}^{i}=\pm (\ell ^{2}/8πG)C_{j}^{i}$, which has been observed in recent literature in solitonic solutions and hydrodynamic models. A general procedure to generate the counterterm series for AdS gravity in any even dimension from the corresponding Euler term is also briefly discussed.

On the negative spectrum of the 2+1 black hole

In (2+1)-dimensional gravity with negative cosmological constant, the states in the negative energy range, between AdS (M=-1) and the so-called BTZ black hole ($M\geq 0$), correspond to topological defects with angular deficit $0<α<2π$. These defects are produced by (static or spinning) 0-branes which, in the extreme case $M\ell =-|J|$, admit globally-defined covariantly constant spinors. Thus, these branes correspond to BPS solitons and are stable ground state candidates for the corresponding supersymmetric extension of 2+1 AdS gravity. These branes constitute external currents that couple in a gauge-invariant way to three-dimensional AdS gravity.

Thermodynamics of Einstein-Born-Infeld black holes with negative cosmological constant

We study the thermodynamics associated to topological black hole solutions of AdS gravity coupled to nonlinear electrodynamics (Born-Infeld) in any dimension, using a background-independent regularization prescription for the Euclidean action given by boundary terms which explicitly depend on the extrinsic curvature (Kounterterms series). A finite action principle leads to the correct definition of thermodynamic variables as Noether charges, which satisfy a Smarr-like relation. In particular, for the odd-dimensional case, a consistent thermodynamic description is achieved if the internal energy of the system includes the vacuum energy for AdS spacetime.

Counterterms in Dimensionally Continued AdS Gravity

We revise two regularization mechanisms for Lovelock gravity with AdS asymptotics. The first one corresponds to the Dirichlet counterterm method, where local functionals of the boundary metric are added to the bulk action on top of a Gibbons-Hawking-Myers term that defines the Dirichlet problem in gravity. The generalized Gibbons-Hawking term can be found in any Lovelock theory following the Myers' procedure to achieve a well-posed action principle for a Dirichlet boundary condition on the metric, which is proved to be equivalent to the Hamiltonian formulation for a radial foliation of spacetime. In turn, a closed expression for the Dirichlet counterterms does not exist for a generic Lovelock gravity. The second method supplements the bulk action with boundary terms which depend on the extrinsic curvature (Kounterterms), and whose explicit form is independent of the particular theory considered. In this paper, we use Dimensionally Continued AdS Gravity (Chern-Simons-AdS in odd and Born-Infeld-AdS in even dimensions) as a toy model to perform the first explicit comparison between both regularization prescriptions. This can be done thanks to the fact that, in this theory, the Dirichlet counterterms can be readily integrated out from the divergent part of the Dirichlet variation of the action. The agreement between both procedures at the level of the boundary terms suggests the existence of a general property of any Lovelock-AdS gravity: intrinsic counterterms are generated as the difference between the Kounterterm series and the corresponding Gibbons-Hawking-Myers term.

On boundary conditions in three-dimensional AdS gravity

A finite action principle for three-dimensional gravity with negative cosmological constant, based on a boundary condition for the asymptotic extrinsic curvature, is considered. The bulk action appears naturally supplemented by a boundary term that is one half the Gibbons-Hawking term, that makes the Euclidean action and the Noether charges finite without additional Dirichlet counterterms. The consistency of this boundary condition with the Dirichlet problem in AdS gravity and the Chern-Simons formulation in three dimensions, and its suitability for the higher odd-dimensional case, are also discussed.

Fluctuations around classical solutions for gauge theories in Lagrangian and Hamiltonian approach

We analyze the dynamics of gauge theories and constrained systems in general under small perturbations around a classical solution (background) in both Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalisms. We prove that a fluctuations theory, described by a quadratic Lagrangian, has the same constraint structure and number of physical degrees of freedom as the original non-perturbed theory, assuming the non-degenerate solution has been chosen. We show that the number of Noether gauge symmetries is the same in both theories, but that the gauge algebra in the fluctuations theory becomes Abelianized. We also show that the fluctuations theory inherits all functionally independent rigid symmetries from the original theory, and that these symmetries are generated by linear or quadratic generators according to whether the original symmetry is preserved by the background, or is broken by it. We illustrate these results with the examples.

Holographic currents in first order Gravity and finite Fefferman-Graham expansions

We study the holographic currents associated to Chern-Simons theories. We start with an example in three dimensions and find the holographic representations of vector and chiral currents reproducing the correct expression for the chiral anomaly. In five dimensions, Chern-Simons theory for AdS group describes first order gravity and we show that there exists a gauge fixing leading to a finite Fefferman-Graham expansion. We derive the corresponding holographic currents, namely, the stress tensor and spin current which couple to the metric and torsional degrees of freedom at the boundary, respectively. We obtain the correct Ward identities for these currents by looking at the bulk constraint equations.

Dynamics and BPS states of AdS5 supergravity with a Gauss-Bonnet term

Some dynamical aspects of five-dimensional supergravity as a Chern-Simons theory for the SU(2,2|N) group, are analyzed. The gravitational sector is described by the Einstein-Hilbert action with negative cosmological constant and a Gauss-Bonnet term with a fixed coupling. The interaction between matter and gravity is characterized by intricate couplings which give rise to dynamical features not present in standard theories. Depending on the location in phase space, the dynamics can possess different number of propagating degrees of freedom, including purely topological sectors. This inhomogeneity of phase space requires special care in the analysis. Background solutions in the canonical sectors, which have regular dynamics with maximal number of degrees of freedom, are shown to exist. Within this class, explicit solutions given by locally AdS spacetimes with nontrivial gauge fields are constructed, and BPS states are identified. It is shown that the charge algebra acquires a central extension due to the presence of the matter fields. The Bogomol'nyi bound for these charges is discussed. Special attention is devoted to the N=4 case since then the gauge group has a U(1) central charge and the phase space possesses additional irregular sectors.

Canonical sectors of five-dimensional Chern-Simons theories

The dynamics of five-dimensional Chern-Simons theories is analyzed. These theories are characterized by intricate self couplings which give rise to dynamical features not present in standard theories. As a consequence, Dirac's canonical formalism cannot be directly applied due to the presence of degeneracies of the symplectic form and irregularities of the constraints on some surfaces of phase space, obscuring the dynamical content of these theories. Here we identify conditions that define sectors where the canonical formalism can be applied for a class of non-Abelian Chern-Simons theories, including supergravity. A family of solutions satisfying the canonical requirements is explicitly found. The splitting between first and second class constraints is performed around these backgrounds, allowing the construction of the charge algebra, including its central extension.

Dynamics of Wess-Zumino-Witten and Chern-Simons Theories

This thesis is devoted to the study of three problems on the Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) and Chern-Simons (CS) supergravity theories in the Hamiltonian framework: 1) The two-dimensional super WZW model coupled to supergravity is constructed. The canonical representation of Kac-Moody algebra is extended to the super Kac-Moody and Virasoro algebras. Then, the canonical action is constructed, invariant under local supersymmetry transformations. The metric tensor and Rarita-Schwinger fields emerge as Lagrange multipliers of the components of the super energy-momentum tensor. 2) In higher dimensions, CS theories are irregular systems, that is, they have constraints which are functionally dependent in some sectors of phase space. In these cases, the standard Dirac procedure must be redefined, as it is shown in the simplified case of finite number of degrees of freedom. Irregular systems fall into two classes depending on their behavior in the vicinity of the constraint surface. In one case, it is possible to regularize the system without ambiguities, while in the other, regularization is not always possible and the Hamiltonian and Lagrangian descriptions may be dynamically inequivalent. Irregularities have important consequences in the linearized approximation of nonlinear theories. 3) The dynamics of CS supergravity theory in D=5, based on the supersymmetric extension of the AdS algebra, su(2,2|4), is analyzed. A class of backgrounds is found, providing a regular and generic effective theory. Some of these backgrounds are shown to be BPS states. The charges for the simplest choice of asymptotic conditions are obtained, and they satisfy a supersymmetric extension of the classical WZW(4) algebra, associated to su(2,2|4).

Dynamical Structure of Irregular Constrained Systems

Hamiltonian systems with functionally dependent constraints (irregular systems), for which the standard Dirac procedure is not directly applicable, are discussed. They are classified according to their behavior in the vicinity of the constraint surface into two fundamental types. If the irregular constraints are multilinear (type I), then it is possible to regularize the system so that the Hamiltonian and Lagrangian descriptions are equivalent. When the constraints are power of a linear function (type II), regularization is not always possible and the Hamiltonian and Lagrangian descriptions may be dynamically inequivalent. It is shown that the inequivalence between the two formalisms can occur if the kinetic energy is an indefinite quadratic form in the velocities. It is also shown that a system of type I can evolve in time from a regular configuration into an irregular one, without any catastrophic changes. Irregularities have important consequences in the linearized approximation to nonlinear theories, as well as for the quantization of such systems. The relevance of these problems to Chern-Simons theories in higher dimensions is discussed.

Irregular Hamiltonian Systems

Hamiltonian systems with linearly dependent constraints (irregular systems), are classified according to their behavior in the vicinity of the constraint surface. For these systems, the standard Dirac procedure is not directly applicable. However, Dirac's treatment can be slightly modified to obtain, in some cases, a Hamiltonian description completely equivalent to the Lagrangian one. A recipe to deal with the different cases is provided, along with a few pedagogical examples.
