Distinct flattened partitions avoiding a pattern of length four

Let $\mathcal{P}_n$ denote the set of distinct permutations of length $n$ that arise from the flattening process applied to the partitions of $[n]=\{1,\ldots,n\}$. In this paper, we consider the problem of avoidance of a single classical pattern of length four by members of $\mathcal{P}_n$. Let $p_n(τ)$ denote the number of members of $\mathcal{P}_n$ that avoid the pattern $τ$. We show that $p_n(τ)=C_{n-1}$ for all $n \geq 1$ for seven patterns of length four yielding new combinatorial interpretations of the Catalan number sequence. Further, we show that $p_n(τ)$ corresponds to the binomial transform of Catalan numbers for three other patterns. To establish our results, we suitably refine the counting sequence $p_n(τ)$ in each case so as to obtain a system of functional equations satisfied by the corresponding generating functions. These functional equations may then be solved explicitly leading to a determination of $p_n(τ)$ in each case.

Distribution of the inversion statistic on run-sorted permutations

Let $π=π_1\cdots π_n$ be a permutation. We say that $π$ is $run$-$sorted$ if $π_1=1$ and the entries immediately following the descent positions of $π$ form an increasing sequence. Let $\mathcal{R}_n$ denote the set of run-sorted permutations of length $n$, which has cardinality given by the Bell number $B_{n-1}$ for all $n \geq 1$. In this paper, we consider the joint distribution $A_n(q,u)$ on $\mathcal{R}_n$ for the parameters tracking the numbers of inversions and runs leading to a new polynomial generalization of the Bell numbers. Among our results, we find a general recurrence for $A_n(q,u)$, from which one may derive explicit formulas for the total numbers of inversions or runs in all the members of $\mathcal{R}_n$ as well as for the sign-balance on $\mathcal{R}_n$ of either parameter. A simple expression for the Eulerian generating function for $A_n(q,1)$ may be found upon making use of Gessel's $q$-exponential formula which can be extended to general $u$. Finally, a formula is found by a direct argument for the maximum number of inversions within a member of $\mathcal{R}_n$.

A weighted Murnaghan-Nakayama rule for $(P, w)$-partitions

The $(P, w)$-partition generating function $K_{(P,w)}(x)$ is a quasisymmetric function obtained from a labeled poset. Recently, Liu and Weselcouch gave a formula for the coefficients of $K_{(P,w)}(x)$ when expanded in the quasisymmetric power sum function basis. This formula generalizes the classical Murnaghan--Nakayama rule for Schur functions. We extend this result to weighted $(P, w)$-partitions and provide a short combinatorial proof, avoiding the Hopf algebra machinery used by Liu--Weselcouch.

Peaks are preserved under run-sorting

We study a sorting procedure (run-sorting) on permutations, where runs are rearranged in lexicographic order. We describe a rather surprising bijection on permutations on length $n$, with the property that it sends the set of peak-values to the set of peak-values after run-sorting. We also prove that the expected number of descents in a permutation $σ\in S_{n}$ after run-sorting is equal to $(n-2)/3$. Moreover, we provide a closed form of the exponential generating function introduced by Nabawanda, Rakotondrajao and Bamunoba in 2020, for the number of run-sorted permutations of $[n]$, ($RSP(n)$) having $k$ runs, which gives a new interpretation to the sequence A124324 in the Online Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences. We show that the descent generating polynomials, $A_{n}(t)$ for $RSP(n)$ are real rooted, and satisfy an interlacing property similar to that satisfied by the Eulerian polynomials. Finally, we study run-sorted binary words and compute the expected number of descents after run-sorting a binary word of length $n$.

The sets of flattened partitions with forbidden patterns

The study of pattern avoidance in permutations, and specifically in flattened partitions is an active area of current research. In this paper, we count the number of distinct flattened partitions over [n] avoiding a single pattern, as well as a pair of two patterns. Several counting sequences, namely Catalan numbers, powers of two, Fibonacci numbers and Motzkin numbers arise. We also consider other combinatorial statistics, namely runs and inversions, and establish some bijections in situations where the statistics coincide.
