On the cohomology of Gushel-Mukai sixfolds

We provide a stable rationality construction for some smooth complex Gushel-Mukai varieties of dimension 6. As a consequence, we compute the integral singular cohomology of any smooth Gushel-Mukai sixfold and in particular, show that it is torsion-free.

Rational cohomology tori

We study normal compact Kähler spaces whose rational cohomology ring is isomorphic to that of a complex torus. We call them rational cohomology tori. We classify, up to dimension three, those with rational singularities. We then give constraints on the degree of the Albanese morphism and the number of simple factors of the Albanese variety for rational cohomology tori of general type (hence projective) with rational singularities. Their properties are related to the birational geometry of smooth projective varieties of general type, maximal Albanese dimension, and with vanishing holomorphic Euler characteristic. We finish with the construction of series of examples.

Special prime Fano fourfolds of degree 10 and index 2

Mukai proved that most prime Fano fourfolds of degree 10 and index 2 are contained in a Grassmannian G(2,5). They are all unirational and some are rational, as remarked by Roth in 1949. We show that their middle cohomology is of K3 type and that their period map is dominant, with smooth 4-dimensional fibers, onto a 20-dimensional bounded symmetric period domain of type IV. Following Hassett, we say that such a fourfold is special if it contains a surface whose cohomology class does not come from the Grassmannian G(2,5). Special fourfolds correspond to a countable union of hypersurfaces in the period domain, labelled by a positive integer d, the discriminant. We describe special fourfolds for some low values of d. We also characterize those integers d for which special fourfolds do exist.

Monomial transformations of the projective space

We prove that, over any field, the dimension of the indeterminacy locus of a rational transformation $f$ of $P^n$ which is defined by monomials of the same degree $d$ with no common factors is at least $(n-2)/2$, provided that the degree of $f$ as a map is not divisible by $d$. This implies upper bounds on the multidegree of $f$.

On nodal prime Fano threefolds of degree 10

We study the geometry and the period map of nodal complex prime Fano threefolds with index 1 and degree 10. We show that these threefolds are birationally isomorphic to Verra solids (hypersurfaces of bidegree $(2,2)$ in $ ¶^2\times ¶^2$). Using Verra's results on the period map for these solids and on the Prym map for double étale covers of plane sextic curves, we prove that the fiber of the period map for our nodal threefolds is birationally the union of two surfaces, for which we give several descriptions. This result is the analog in the nodal case of a result obtained in arXiv:0812.3670 for the smooth case.

Pseudoeffective and nef classes on abelian varieties

The cones of divisors and curves defined by various positivity conditions on a smooth projective variety have been the subject of a great deal of work in algebraic geometry, and by now they are quite well understood. However the analogous cones for cycles of higher codimension and dimension have started to come into focus only recently. The purpose of this paper is to explore some of the phenomena that can occur by working out the picture fairly completely in a couple of simple but non-trivial cases. Specifically, we study cycles of arbitrary codimension on the self-product of an elliptic curve with complex multiplication, as well as two dimensional cycles on the product of a very general abelian surface with itself. Already one finds various non-classical behavior, for instance nef cycles that fail to be pseudoeffective: this answers a question raised in 1964 by Grothendieck in correspondence with Mumford. We also propose a substantial number of open problems for further investigation.

Hyper-Kähler fourfolds and Grassmann geometry

We construct a new 20-dimensional family of algebraic hyper-Kaehler fourfolds and prove that they are deformation-equivalent to the second punctual Hilbert scheme of a K3 surface of degree 22.

On coverings of simple abelian varieties

We show that the vector bundle associated to a smooth projective connected finite covering of a simple complex abelian variety is ample (under a simple necessary condition). This result is obtained by showing that this bundle is M-regular in the sense of Pareschi-Popa, and that any M-regular sheaf is ample.

Nondeformability of entire curves in projective hypersurfaces of high degree

In this article, we prove that there does not exist a family of entire curves in the universal family of hypersurfaces of degree $d\geq 2n$ in the complex projective space ${\mathbb P}^n$. This can be seen as a weak version of the Kobayashi conjecture asserting that a general projective hypersurface of high degree is hyperbolic in the sense of Kobayashi.

Fano varieties with high degree

For any positive integer $k$ and any integer $n$ large enough, we construct a Fano variety $X$ with Picard number $k$ and dimension $n$ such that $((-K_X)^n)^{1/n}$ grows like $n^k/(\log n)^{k-1}$.

On the Euler Characteristic of Generalized Kummer Varieties

We apply the Yau-Zaslow-Beauville method to compute the Euler characteristic of the generalized Kummer varieties attached to a complex abelian surface (a calculation also done by Goettsche and Soergel by different methods). It is related to the number of genus 2 curves on an abelian surface.

Théorèmes De Connexité Pour Les Produits D'Espaces Projectifs et Les Grassmanniennes

Let $G$ be the Grassmannian $G(d,n)$, let $X$ and $Y$ be complete irreducible varieties, and let $X\rightarrow G$ and $Y\rightarrow G$ be morphisms. Hansen proved that $X \times_G Y$ is connected when $codim f(X) + codim g(Y) < n$. We show that the conclusion holds under the often weaker hypothesis $f(X).g(Y).T\ne 0$, where $T$ is the class of $G(d,n-1)$ in $G$. We prove similar results when $G$ is a product of projective spaces. In particular, if $D$ is an irreducible subvariety of $P^n\times P^n$ of dimension $n$ which dominates both factors, and if $X$ is complete irreducible, with a morphism $f: X \rightarrow P^n\times P^n$ such that $dim f(X) >n$, $f^{-1}(D)$ is connected. This extends the classical Fulton-Hansen connectedness theorem. These results illustrate Fulton and Lazarsfeld's idea that connectedness should be a numerical property.

Minimal Cohomology Classes and Jacobians

We show that on the Jacobian $(JC,θ)$ of a smooth curve $C$ of genus $g$, any effective cycle in $JC$ with cohomology class $θ^d/d!$ is a translate of $W_{g-d}(C)$ or $-W_{g-d}(C)$. We then use this result to prove that for $1<d<g$, the Jacobian locus (\resp the locus of intermediate Jacobians of cubic threefolds) is an irreducible component of the set of principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension $g$ for which $θ^d/d!$ (\resp $θ^3/3!$) is the class of an effective algebraic cycle. Moreover, on the intermediate Jacobian of a generic cubic threefold, $θ^2/2!$ is not the class of an effective algebraic cycle.

Theoremes de connexites et varietes abeliennes

We prove a connexity theorem for abelian varieties in characteristic $0$: if $X$ is an abelian variety and $V\rightarrow X$ and $W\rightarrow X$ two morphisms, then, under certain hypotheses, the fiber product of $V$ and $W$ over $X$ is connected. This theorem has several consequences: the algebraic fundamental groups of a simple abelian variety $X$ and of a normal subvariety $V$ of $X$ of dimension $> dim(X)/2$ are isomorphic. The same holds when $V$ is a finite cover of degree $\le dim(X)$ of $X$. (The only difference between this replacement and the original submission is that one of the conjectures is now proved).

Trisecant Lines And Jacobians, II

Let $Θ$ be a symmetric theta divisor on an indecomposable principally polarized complex abelian variety $X$. The linear system $|2Θ|$ defines a morphism $K:X\ra |2Θ|^*$, whose image is the Kummer variety $K(X)$ of $X$. When $(X,θ)$ is the Jacobian of an algebraic curve, there are infinitely many trisecants lines to $K(X)$. Welters has conjectured that the existence of one trisecant line to the Kummer variety should characterize Jacobians. The purpose of this article is to show the following weak version of Welters conjecture: $X$ is a Jacobian if and only if there exist points $a,b,c$ of $X$ such that (i) the subgroup of $X$ generated by $a-b$ and $b-c$ is dense in $X$, (ii) the points $K(a)$, $K(b)$ and $K(c)$ are distinct and collinear. This improves on previous results obtained by the author (Trisecant Lines And Jacobians, J. Alg. Geom. 1 (1992), 5--14). Various degenerate cases of the conjecture are also considered.

Points of Low Degree on Smooth Plane Curves

The purpose of this note is to provide some applications of Faltings' recent proof of S. Lang's conjecture to smooth plane curves. Let $C$ be a smooth plane curve defined by an equation of degree $d$ with integral coefficients. We show that for $d\ge 7$, the curve $C$ has only finitely many points whose field of definition has degree $\le d-2$ over $Q$, and that for $d\ge 8$, all but finitely many points of $C$ whose field of definition has degree $\le d-1$ over $Q$ arise as points of intersection of rational lines through rational points of $C$.
