Improved Regularity for Nonlocal Hamilton--Jacobi Equations with Superlinear Hamiltonians

We investigate the regularity of viscosity solutions to a class of nonlocal Hamilton-Jacobi equations driven by x-dependent integro-differential operators and coercive superlinear Hamiltonians. We first establish H{ö}lder regularity for bounded viscosity solutions under general structural and continuity assumptions on the underlying L{é}vy measures, without imposing any ellipticity condition on the nonlocal operator. The H{ö}lder exponent is given explicitly in terms of the order $σ$ $\in$ (0, 2) of the operator and the growth exponent m > 1 of the Hamiltonian. In particular, our approach applies to arbitrary superlinear Hamiltonians, including the delicate regime 1 < m < $σ$ < 2, and yields an improved regularity exponent when $σ$ $\in$ (1, 2). Assuming in addition a weak ellipticity condition on the nonlocal operator, we prove that viscosity solutions are globally Lipschitz continuous. The proof combines the H{ö}lder regularity supplied by the coercive Hamiltonian with the regularizing effect of the nonlocal diffusion through an Ishii-Lions argument, allowing us to treat Hamiltonians with arbitrary superlinear growth. Finally, we provide a counterexample showing that, in the absence of ellipticity, Lipschitz regularity may fail if the spatial dependence of the L{é}vy measures is merely H{ö}lder continuous, thereby illustrating the sharpness of our continuity assumptions.

Approximation of an optimal control problem on a network with a perturbed problem in the whole space

A classical optimal control problem posed in the whole space R^2 is perturbed by a singular term of magnitude $ε$^{-1} aimed at driving the trajectories to a prescribed network $Γ$. We are interested in the link between the limit problem, as $ε$ $\rightarrow$ 0, and some optimal control problems on networks studied in the literature. We prove that the sequence of trajectories admits a subsequential limit evolving on $Γ$. Moreover, in the case of the Eikonal equation, we show that the sequence of value functions associated with the perturbed optimal control problems converges to a limit which, in particular, coincides with the value function of the expected optimal control problem set on the network $Γ$.

A nonsmooth extension of the Brezzi-Rappaz-Raviart approximation theorem via metric regularity techniques and applications to nonlinear PDEs

We generalize the Brezzi-Rappaz-Raviart approximation theorem, which allows to obtain existence and a priori error estimates for approximations of solutions to some nonlinear partial differential equations. Our contribution lies in the fact that we typically allow for nonlinearities having merely Lipschitz regularity, while previous results required some form of differentiability. This is achieved by making use of the theory of metrically regular mappings, developed in the context of variational analysis. We apply this generalization to derive quasi-optimal error estimates for finite element approximations to solutions of viscous Hamilton-Jacobi equations and second order mean field game systems.

Solving Nonlinear Absolute Value Equations

In this work, we show that several problems naturally represented as Nonlinear Absolute Value Equations (NAVE) can be reformulated as Nonlinear Complementarity Problems (NCP) and efficiently solved using smoothing regularization techniques under mild assumptions. As far as we know, this is the first numerical approach that directly deals with NAVE. We also identify a technical assumption commonly utilized in smoothing techniques and prove its equivalence to a classical __ojasiewicz inequality at infinity, validating its non-restrictive nature. Furthermore, we extend established error estimates for NCP solvers to derive error bounds for NAVE problems under weaker assumptions. We illustrate the effectiveness of our approach through applications including asymmetric ridge optimization and nonlinear ordinary differential equations.

Degenerate Elliptic PDEs on a Network with Kirchhoff Conditions

In this article, we are interested in semilinear, possibly degenerate elliptic equations posed on a general network, with nonlinear Kirchhoff-type conditions for its interior vertices and Dirichlet boundary conditions for the boundary ones. The novelty here is the generality of the equations posed on each edge that is incident to a particular vertex, ranging from first-order equations to uniformly elliptic ones. Our main result is a strong comparison principle, i.e., a comparison result between discontinuous viscosity sub and supersolutions of such problems, from which we conclude the existence and uniqueness of a continuous viscosity by Perron's method. Further extensions are also discussed.

Nonlocal Hamilton-Jacobi Equations on a network with Kirchhoff type conditions

In this article, we consider nonlocal Hamilton-Jacobi Equations on networks with Kirchhoff type conditions for the interior vertices and Dirichlet boundary conditions for the boundary ones: our aim is to provide general existence and comparison results in the case when the integro-differential operators are of order strictly less than 1. The main originality of these results is to allow these nonlocal terms to have contributions on several different edges of the network. The existence of Lipschitz continuous solutions is proved in two ways: either by using the vanishing viscosity method or by the usual Perron's method. The comparison proof relies on arguments introduced by Lions and Souganidis. We also introduce a notion of flux-limited solution, nonlocal analog to the one introduced by Imbert and Monneau, and prove that the solutions of the Kirchhoff problem are flux-limited solutions for a suitable flux-limiter. After treating in details the case when we only have one interior vertex, we extend our approach to treat general networks.

Approximation and perturbations of stable solutions to a stationary mean field game system

This work introduces a new general approach for the numerical analysis of stable equilibria to second order mean field games systems in cases where the uniqueness of solutions may fail. For the sake of simplicity, we focus on a simple stationary case. We propose an abstract framework to study these solutions by reformulating the mean field game system as an abstract equation in a Banach space. In this context, stable equilibria turn out to be regular solutions to this equation, meaning that the linearized system is well-posed. We provide three applications of this property: we study the sensitivity analysis of stable solutions, establish error estimates for their finite element approximations, and prove the local converge of Newton's method in infinite dimensions.

Comparison principle for general nonlocal Hamilton-Jacobi equations with superlinear gradient

We obtain the comparison principle for discontinuous viscosity sub- and supersolutions of nonlocal Hamilton-Jacobi equations, with superlinear and coercive gradient terms. The nonlocal terms are integro-differential operators in Lévy form, with general measures: $x$-dependent, possibly degenerate and without any restriction on the order. The measures must satisfy a combined Wasserstein/Total Variation-continuity assumption, which is one of the weakest conditions used in the context of viscosity approach for this type of integro-differential PDEs. The proof relies on a regularizing effect due to the gradient growth. We present several examples of applications to PDEs with different types of nonlocal operators (measures with density, operators of variable order, Lévy-Itô operators).

A convex function satisfying the Lojasiewicz inequality but failing the gradient conjecture both at zero and infinity

We construct an example of a smooth convex function on the plane with a strict minimum at zero, which is real analytic except at zero, for which Thom's gradient conjecture fails both at zero and infinity. More precisely, the gradient orbits of the function spiral around zero and at infinity. Besides, the function satisfies the Lojasiewicz gradient inequality at zero.

Some results for the large time behavior of Hamilton-Jacobi Equations with Caputo Time Derivative

We obtain some Hölder regularity estimates for an Hamilton-Jacobi with fractional time derivative of order $α\in (0,1)$ cast by a Caputo derivative. The Hölder seminorms are independent of time, which allows to investigate the large time behavior of the solutions. We focus on the Namah-Roquejoffre setting whose typical example is the Eikonal equation. Contrary to the classical time derivative case $α=1$, the convergence of the solution on the so-called projected Aubry set, which is an important step to catch the large time behavior, is not straightforward. Indeed, a function with nonpositive Caputo derivative for all time does not necessarily converge; we provide such a counterexample. However, we establish partial results of convergence under some geometrical assumptions.

Finite Horizon Mean Field Games on Networks

We consider finite horizon stochastic mean field games in which the state space is a network. They are described by a system coupling a backward in time Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation and a forward in time Fokker-Planck equation. The value function u is continuous and satisfies general Kirchhoff conditions at the vertices. The density m of the distribution of states satisfies dual transmission conditions: in particular, m is generally discontinuous across the vertices, and the values of m on each side of the vertices satisfy special compatibility conditions. The stress is put on the case when the Hamiltonian is Lipschitz continuous. Existence and uniqueness are proven.

A Class of Infinite Horizon Mean Field Games on Networks

We consider stochastic mean field games for which the state space is a network. In the ergodic case, they are described by a system coupling a Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation and a Fokker-Planck equation, whose unknowns are the invariant measure m, a value function u, and the ergodic constant $ρ$. The function u is continuous and satisfies general Kirchhoff conditions at the vertices. The invariant measure m satisfies dual transmission conditions: in particular, m is discontinuous across the vertices in general, and the values of m on each side of the vertices satisfy special compatibility conditions. Existence and uniqueness are proven, under suitable assumptions.

Large time behavior of unbounded solutions of first-order Hamilton-Jacobi equations in the whole space

We study the large time behavior of solutions of first-order convex Hamilton-Jacobi Equations of Eikonal type set in the whole space. We assume that the solutions may have arbitrary growth. A complete study of the structure of solutions of the ergodic problem is provided : contrarily to the periodic setting, the ergodic constant is not anymore unique, leading to different large time behavior for the solutions. We establish the ergodic behavior of the solutions of the Cauchy problem (i) when starting with a bounded from below initial condition and (ii) for some particular unbounded from below initial condition, two cases for which we have different ergodic constants which play a role. When the solution is not bounded from below, an example showing that the convergence may fail in general is provided.

Explicit formulas for $C^{1,1}$ Glaeser-Whitney extensions of 1-fields in Hilbert spaces

We give a simple alternative proof for the $C^{1,1}$--convex extension problem which has been introduced and studied by D. Azagra and C. Mudarra [2]. As an application, we obtain an easy constructive proof for the Glaeser-Whitney problem of $C^{1,1}$ extensions on a Hilbert space. In both cases we provide explicit formulae for the extensions. For the Gleaser-Whitney problem the obtained extension is almost minimal, that is, minimal up to a factor $\frac{1+\sqrt{3}}{2}$ in the sense of Le Gruyer [15].

A Priori Lipschitz Estimates for Solutions of Local and Nonlocal Hamilton-Jacobi Equations with Ornstein-Uhlenbeck Operator

We establish a priori Lipschitz estimates for unbounded solutions of second-order Hamilton-Jacobi equations in R^N in presence of an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck drift. We generalize the results obtained by Fujita, Ishii \& Loreti (2006) in several directions. The first one is to consider more general operators. We first replace the Laplacian by a general diffusion matrix and then consider a nonlocal integro-differential operator of fractional Laplacian type. The second kind of extension is to deal with more general Hamiltonians which are merely sublinear. These results are obtained for both degenerate and nondegenerate equations.

Lipschitz regularity results for nonlinear strictly elliptic equations and applications

Most of lipschitz regularity results for nonlinear strictly elliptic equations are obtained for a suitable growth power of the nonlinearity with respect to the gradient variable (subquadratic for instance). For equations with superquadratic growth power in gradient, one usually uses weak Bernstein-type arguments which require regularity and/or convex-type assumptions on the gradient nonlinearity. In this article, we obtain new Lipschitz regularity results for a large class of nonlinear strictly elliptic equations with possibly arbitrary growth power of the Hamiltonian with respect to the gradient variable using some ideas coming from Ishii-Lions' method. We use these bounds to solve an ergodic problem and to study the regularity and the large time behavior of the solution of the evolution equation.

Lipschitz regularity for integro-differential equations with coercive hamiltonians and application to large time behavior

In this paper, we provide suitable adaptations of the "weak version of Bernstein method" introduced by the first author in 1991, in order to obtain Lipschitz regularity results and Lipschitz estimates for nonlinear integro-differential elliptic and parabolic equations set in the whole space. Our interest is to obtain such Lipschitz results to possibly degenerate equations, or to equations which are indeed "uniformly el-liptic" (maybe in the nonlocal sense) but which do not satisfy the usual "growth condition" on the gradient term allowing to use (for example) the Ishii-Lions' method. We treat the case of a model equation with a superlinear coercivity on the gradient term which has a leading role in the equation. This regularity result together with comparison principle provided for the problem allow to obtain the ergodic large time behavior of the evolution problem in the periodic setting.

Entire solutions of fully nonlinear elliptic equations with a superlinear gradient term

In this paper we consider second order fully nonlinear operators with an additive superlinear gradient term. Like in the pioneering paper of Brezis for the semilinear case, we obtain the existence of entire viscosity solutions, defined in all the space, without assuming global bounds. A uniqueness result is also obtained for special gradient terms, subject to a convexity/concavity type assumption where superlinearity is essential and has to be handled in a different way from the linear case.
