Mean-Field Theory of a Quantum Heisenberg Spin Glass

A full mean field solution of a quantum Heisenberg spin glass model is presented in a large-N limit. A spin glass transition is found for all values of the spin S. The quantum critical regime associated with the quantum transition at S=0, and the various regimes in the spin glass phase at high spin are analyzed. The specific heat is shown to vanish linearly with temperature. In the spin-glass phase, intriguing connections between the equilibrium properties of the quantum problem and the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of classical models are pointed out.

Non-Fermi liquid regime of a doped Mott insulator

We study the doping of a Mott insulator in the presence of quenched frustrating disorder in the magnetic exchange. A low doping regime $δ<J/t$ is found, in which the quasiparticle coherent scale is low : $ε_F^* = J (δ/δ^*)^2$ with $δ^*=J/t$ (the ratio of typical exchange to hopping). In the ``quantum critical regime'' $ε_F^*<T<J$, several physical quantities display Marginal Fermi Liquid behaviour : NMR relaxation time $1/T_1\sim const.$, resistivity $ρ_{dc}(T) \propto T$, optical lifetime $τ_{opt}^{-1}\propto ω/\ln(ω/\epstar)$ and response functions obey $ω/T$ scaling, e.g. $J\sum_q χ''(q,ω) \propto \tanh (ω/2T)$. In contrast, single-electron properties display stronger deviations from Fermi liquid theory in this regime with a $\sqrtω$ dependence of the inverse single-particle lifetime and a $1/\sqrtω$ decay of the photoemission intensity. On the basis of this model and of various experimental evidence, it is argued that the proximity of a quantum critical point separating a glassy Mott-Anderson insulator from a metallic ground-state is an important ingredient in the physics of the normal state of cuprate superconductors (particularly the Zn-doped materials). In this picture the corresponding quantum critical regime is a ``slushy'' state of spins and holes with slow spin and charge dynamics responsible for the anomalous properties of the normal state.

Overscreened multi-channel SU(N) Kondo model : large-N solution and Conformal Field Theory

The multichannel Kondo model with SU(N) spin symmetry and SU(K) channel symmetry is considered. The impurity spin is chosen to transform as an antisymmetric representation of SU(N), corresponding to a fixed number of Abrikosov fermions $\sum_αf_α^{\dagger}f_α=Q$. For more than one channel (K>1), and all values of N and Q, the model displays non-Fermi behaviour associated with the overscreening of the impurity spin. Universal low-temperature thermodynamic and transport properties of this non-Fermi liquid state are computed using conformal field theory methods. A large-N limit of the model is then considered, in which K/N and Q/N are held fixed. Spectral densities satisfy coupled integral equations in this limit, corresponding to a (time-dependent) saddle-point. A low frequency, low-temperature analysis of these equations reveals universal scaling properties in the variable $ω/T$, also predicted from conformal invariance. The universal scaling form is obtained analytically and used to compute the low-temperature universal properties of the model in the large-N limit, such as the T=0 residual entropy and residual resistivity, and the critical exponents associated with the specific heat and susceptibility. The connections with the ``non-crossing approximation'' and the previous work of Cox and Ruckenstein are discussed.

Transition from overscreening to underscreening in the multichannel Kondo model: exact solution at large N

A novel large-N limit of the multichannel Kondo model is introduced, for representations of the impurity spin described by Schwinger bosons. Three cases are found, associated with underscreening, overscreening and exact Kondo screening of the impurity. The saddle-point equations derived in this limit are reminiscent of the ``non-crossing approximation'', but preserve the Fermi-liquid nature of the model in the exactly screened case. Several physical quantities are computed, both numerically, and analytically in the low-ω,T limit, and compared to other approaches.
