On the experimental violation of Mermin's inequality with imperfect measurements

We investigate theoretically the feasibility of an experimental test of the Bell-type inequality derived by Mermin for correlated spins larger than 1/2. Using the Schwinger representation, we link the output fields of two two-mode squeezers in order to create correlated effective spins between two observers. Spin measurements will be performed by photon-number-resolved photodetection, which has recently come of age. We examine the effect of nonideal detection quantum efficiency---and any other optical loss---on the violation margin of Mermin's inequality. We find that experimental violation is well accessible for spins larger than 1 for quantum efficiencies compatible with the current state of the art.

Nonlocal restoration of two-mode squeezing in the presence of strong optical loss

We present the experimental realization of a theoretical effect discovered by Olivares and Paris, in which a pair of entangled optical beams undergoing independent losses can see nonlocal correlations restored by the use of a nonlocal resource correlating the losses. Twin optical beams created in an entangled Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) state by an optical parametric oscillator above threshold were subjected to 50% loss from beamsplitters in their paths. The resulting severe degradation of the signature quantum correlations observed between the two beams was then suppressed when another, independent EPR state impinged upon the other input ports of the beamsplitters, effectively entangling the losses inflicted to the initial EPR state. The additional EPR beam pair was classically coherent with the primary one but had no quantum correlations with it. This result may find applications as a quantum tap for entanglement.

Entangling the optical frequency comb: simultaneous generation of multiple 2x2 and 2x3 continuous-variable cluster states in a single optical parametric oscillator

We report on our research effort to generate large-scale multipartite optical-mode entanglement using as few physical resources as possible. We have previously shown that cluster- and GHZ-type N-partite continuous-variable entanglement can be obtained in an optical resonator that contains a suitably designed second-order nonlinear optical medium, pumped by at most O(N^2) fields. In this paper, we show that the frequency comb of such a resonator can be entangled into an arbitrary number of independent 2x2 and 2x3 continuous-variable cluster states by a single optical parametric oscillator pumped by just a few optical modes.

Quasiphasematched concurrent nonlinearities in periodically poled KTiOPO_4 for quantum computing over the optical frequency comb

We report the successful design and experimental implementation of three coincident nonlinear interactions, namely ZZZ ("type-0"), ZYY (type-I), and YYZ/YZY (type-II) second harmonic generation of 780 nm light from a 1560 nm pump beam in a single, multigrating, periodically poled KTiOPO_4 crystal. The resulting nonlinear medium is the key component for making a scalable quantum computer over the optical frequency comb of a single optical parametric oscillator.

Resonant Cascaded Down-Conversion

We analyze an optical parametric oscillator (OPO) in which cascaded down-conversion occurs inside a cavity resonant for all modes but the initial pump. Due to the resonant cascade design, the OPO present two χ^2 level oscillation thresholds that are therefore remarkably lower than for a χ^3 OPO. This is promising for reaching the regime of an effective third-order nonlinearity well above both thresholds. Such a χ^2 cascaded device also has potential applications in frequency conversion to far infra-red regimes. But, most importantly, it can generate novel multi-partite quantum correlations in the output radiation, which represent a step beyond squeezed or entangled light. The output can be highly non-Gaussian, and therefore not describable by any semi-classical model.

Broadband amplitude squeezing in a periodically poled KTiOPO_4 waveguide

We generated -2.2 dB of broadband amplitude squeezing at 1064 nm in a periodically poled KTiOPO_4 (PPKTP) waveguide, by coupling of the fundamental and second harmonic continuous-wave fields. This is the largest amount of squeezing obtained to date in a KTP waveguide, limited by propagation losses. This result paves the way for further improvements by use of lower-loss buried ion-exchanged waveguides.

One-Way Quantum Computing in the Optical Frequency Comb

One-way quantum computing allows any quantum algorithm to be implemented easily using just measurements. The difficult part is creating the universal resource, a cluster state, on which the measurements are made. We propose a radically new approach: a scalable method that uses a single, multimode optical parametric oscillator (OPO). The method is very efficient and generates a continuous-variable cluster state, universal for quantum computation, with quantum information encoded in the quadratures of the optical frequency comb of the OPO.

Graph states and carrier-envelope phase squeezing

We outline a new class of continuous-variable graph states that can be useful to describe entangle- ment, and also multimode squeezing, in an optical frequency comb. We show that a particular case of such states coincides with the squeezing of the carrier-envelope phase, or of the total intensity, of a mode-locked laser. We then discuss the experimental issues related to measuring the quantum noise of the carrier-envelope phase of a frequency comb and show that this can be carried out by use of quantum heterodyne multiplexing, a technique that may be useful to measure multipartite entanglement as well.

Enhanced optical communication and broadband sub-shot-noise interferometry with a stable free-running periodically-poled-KTiOPO4 squeezer

An intrinsically stable type-I optical parametric oscillator was built with a periodically poled KTiOPO4 (PPKTP) crystal to generate a stable bright, continuous-wave, broadband phase-squeezed beam. A 3.2 dB sensitivity enhancement of optical interferometry was demonstrated on weak electrooptic modulation signals within a 20 MHz squeezing bandwidth. This also realized a channel capacity increase beyond that of coherent optical communication.

Ultracompact Generation of Continuous-Variable Cluster States

We propose an experimental scheme that has the potential for large-scale realization of continuous-variable (CV) cluster states for universal quantum computation. We do this by mapping CV cluster-state graphs onto two-mode squeezing graphs, which can be engineered into a single optical parametric oscillator (OPO). The desired CV cluster state is produced directly from a joint squeezing operation on the vacuum using a multi-frequency pump beam. This method has potential for ultracompact experimental implementation. As an illustration, we detail an experimental proposal for creating a four-mode square CV cluster state with a single OPO.

Experimental continuous-variable entanglement from a phase-difference-locked optical parametric oscillator

We observed continuous-variable entanglement between the bright beams emitted above threshold by an ultrastable optical parametric oscillator, classically phase-locked at a frequency difference of 161.8273240(5) MHz. The amplitude-difference squeezing is -3 dB and the phase-sum one is -1.35 dB. Besides proving entanglement in a new physical system, the phase-locked OPO, such unprecedented frequency-difference stability paves the way for transferring entanglement between different optical frequencies and densely implementing continuous-variable quantum information in the frequency domain.

Low-frequency measurements of electro-optic coefficients of Na:KTP, and RTA

We report the measurement of the r23 and r33 electro-optic coefficients and of the z-axis electrical conductivity of the nonlinear optical crystals Na:KTP and RTA. We observed a marked decrease of the electro-optic effect in the Na:KTP crystals for frequencies below 100 Hz. This effect is absent in RTA.

Observation of triply coincident nonlinearities in periodically poled KTiOPO4

We report the simultaneous quasi-phase-matching of all three possible nonlinearities for propagation along the X axis of periodocally poled (PP) KTiOPO4 (KTP) for second-harmonic generation of 745 nm pulsed light from 1490nm subpicosecond pulses in a PPKTP crystal with a 45.65 micrometer poling period. This confirms the recent Sellmeier fits of KTP by K. Kato and E. Takaoka [Appl. Opt. 41, 5040 (2002)]. Such coincident nonlinearities are of importance for realizing compact sources of multipartite continuous-variable entanglement [Pfister et al., Phys. Rev. A 70, 020302 (2004)] and we propose a new simpler method for entangling four fields, based on this triple coincidence.

Multipartite continuous-variable entanglement from concurrent nonlinearities

We show theoretically that concurrent interactions in a second-order nonlinear medium placed inside an optical resonator can generate multipartite entanglement between the resonator modes. We show that there is a mathematical connexion between this system and van Loock and Braunstein's proposal for entangling N continuous quantum optical variables by interfering the outputs of N degenerate optical parametric amplifiers (OPA) at a N-port beam splitter. Our configuration, however, requires only one nondegenerate OPA and no interferometer. In a preliminary experimental study, we observe the concurrence of the appropriate interactions in periodically poled RbTiOAsO4.

Sub-shot-noise heterodyne polarimetry

We report the experimental demonstration of a heterodyne polarization rotation measurement with a noise floor 4.8 dB below the optical shot noise, by use of the classically phase-locked quantum twin beams emitted above threshold by an ultrastable type-II Na:KTP CW optical parametric oscillator. We believe this is the largest noise reduction achieved to date on optical phase-difference measurements.

Quantum interference of ultrastable twin optical beams

We report the first measurement of the quantum phase-difference noise of an ultrastable nondegenerate optical parametric oscillator that emits twin beams classically phase-locked at exact frequency degeneracy. The measurement illustrates the property of a lossless balanced beam-splitter to convert number-difference squeezing into phase-difference squeezing and, thus, provides indirect evidence for Heisenberg-limited interferometry using twin beams. This experiment is a generalization of the Hong-Ou-Mandel interference effect for continuous variables and constitutes a milestone towards continuous-variable entanglement of bright, ultrastable nondegenerate beams.

Particle-number scaling of the phase sensitivity in realistic Bayesian twin-mode Heisenberg-limited interferometry

We investigate the scaling of the phase sensitivity of a nonideal Heisenberg-limited interferometer with the particle number N, in the case of the Bayesian detection procedure proposed by Holland and Burnett [p.r.l. 71, p. 1355 (1993)] for twin boson input modes. Using Monte Carlo simulations for up to 10,000 bosons, we show that the phase error of a nonideal interferometer scales with the Heisenberg limit if the losses are of the order of N^-1. Greater losses degrade the scaling which is then in N^-1/2, like the shot-noise limit, yet the sensitivity stays sub-shot-noise as long as photon correlations are present. These results give the actual limits of Bayesian detection for twin-mode interferometry and prove that it is an experimentally feasible scheme, contrary to what is implied by the coincidence-detection analysis of Kim et al. [p.r.a. 60, p. 708 (1999)].

Stable nondegenerate optical parametric oscillation at degenerate frequencies in Na:KTP

We report the realization of a light source specifically designed for the generation of bright continuous-variable entangled beams and for Heisenberg-limited inteferometry. The source is a nondegenerate, single-mode, continuous-wave optical parametric oscillator in Na:KTP, operated at frequency degeneracy and just above threshold, which is also of interest for the study of critical fluctuations at the transition point. The residual frequency-difference jitter is $\pm$ 150 kHz for a 3 MHz cold cavity half-width at half maximum. We observe 4 dB of photon-number-difference squeezing at 200 kHz. The Na:KTP crystal is noncritically phase-matched for a 532 nm pump and polarization crosstalk is therefore practically nonexistent.
