Efficiency of a smoke curtain in a ventilated tunnel

Smoke curtains are typically used in public-access buildings in connexion with ventilation effects without considering a crossed design. This paper aims to understand the fire smoke behaviour in the context of the interaction between mechanical ventilation and smoke curtains. This interaction is analysed here in the configuration of a tunnel with using numerical simulations. Initially, without the presence of fire smoke, the length of the vortex induced downstream of the curtain is determined as a function of the longitudinal velocity and the size of the curtain. It can be observed that for a sufficiently high velocity (i.e. a sufficiently high Reynolds number), the size of this vortex depends only on the height of the smoke curtain. Then, in the presence of a moderate fire heat release rate, we determined the air velocity required to prevent smoke from rising beyond a curtain measuring 1/5 the height of the tunnel. A significant reduction in this longitudinal velocity was observed in comparison to the velocity required to achieve the same level of containment without the presence of a curtain. The vortex generated by the curtain nevertheless interacts with the smoke layer, locally increasing its thickness. Lastly, this configuration is tested in the case of a medium and high fire heat release rate in a road tunnel with transverse ventilation. The work carried out suggests that the installation of smoke curtains of an appropriate size, combined with control of ventilation effects, is likely to reduce the need for them.

Panaches horizontaux non-Boussinesq en milieu homogène

The environmental impact of pollutants and effluents discharged into the atmosphere or the oceans has led researchers to conduct studies related to this issue. Several works have been carried out in this context in order to reduce the effect on the local environment. These types of ejections in nature are modeled as jets in the presence of a density gradient. In this study we treated the problem of inclined round turbulent buoyant jets and plumes ejected in a homogeneous or stratified fluid, at rest or in motion. The prediction of the flow behavior, i.e. the evolution of its variables, is first treated theoretically from a model whose formalism is valid in both the Boussinesq case as well as in the non-Boussinesq general case. Solving the equations governing the plumes is performed numerically using a Runge-Kutta 4th order. To validate the model, laboratory experiments are performed with round jets of air and helium for a wide range of densities. The confrontation theory-experience aims here to fix the limits of validity of the theoretical model. Keywords: Buoyant jet, plume, non-Boussinesq, laser tomography, image processing, perturbation method.

The history force on a small particle in a linearly stratified fluid

The hydrodynamic force experienced by a small spherical particle undergoing an arbitrary time-dependent motion in a density-stratified fluid is investigated theoretically. The study is carried out under the Oberbeck-Boussinesq approximation, and in the limit of small Reynolds and small Péclet numbers. The force acting on the particle is obtained by using matched asymptotic expansions in which the small parameter is given by a/l where a is the particle radius and l is the stratification length defined by Ardekani & Stocker (2010), which depends on the Brunt-Vaisala frequency, on the fluid kinematic viscosity and on the thermal or the concentration diffusivity (depending on the case considered). The matching procedure used here, which is based on series expansions of generalized functions, slightly differs from that generally used in similar problems. In addition to the classical Stokes drag, it is found the particle experiences a memory force given by two convolution products, one of which involves, as usual, the particle acceleration and the other one, the particle velocity. Owing to the stratification, the transient behaviour of this memory force, in response to an abrupt motion, consists of an initial fast decrease followed by a damped oscillation with an angular-frequency corresponding to the Brunt-Vaisala frequency. The perturbation force eventually tends to a constant which provides us with correction terms that should be added to the Stokes drag to accurately predict the settling time of a particle in a diffusive stratified-fluid.

Note on the method of matched-asymptotic expansions for determining the force acting on a particle

This paper is an addendum to the article by Candelier, Mehaddi & Vauquelin (2013) where the motion of a particle in a stratified fluid is investigated theoretically, at small Reynolds and Péclet numbers. We review briefly the method of matched asymptotic expansions which is generally used in order to determine the force acting on a particle embedded in a given flow, in order to account for small, but finite, inertia effects. As part of this method, we present an alternative matching procedure, which is based on a series expansion of the far-field solution of the problem, performed in the sense of generalized functions. The way to perform such a series is presented succinctly and a simple example is provided.
