Master equation for systems interacting with linearized gravity

We investigate the open quantum dynamics of a system of two masses interacting with an environment of linearized gravitational waves. We formulate the analysis in terms of the observable proper distance between the two masses, and show that the canonical variables obtained from the standard Lagrangian, expressed in terms of the Fermi normal coordinates, are not suitable for an effective description of the system. We resolve this issue through a unitary transformation that provides a physically meaningful system--environment decomposition and derive the master equation to leading order in $G$. Its dissipative sector reproduces the classical energy loss due to gravitational-wave emission, while the noisy contributions suppress coherences between states with different mass quadrupole, or effectively, different proper separations. In the regime where the proper distance can be described by considering small quantum fluctuations around an average distance $l_0$, the dynamics reduces to a Caldeira--Leggett-type equation, with a decoherence rate dependent on the baseline length $l_0$.

Probing the Quantum Nature of Gravity through Classical Diffusion

The question of whether gravity is fundamentally quantum remains one of the deepest open problems in modern physics. A recently explored approach consists of testing gravity's ability to entangle quantum systems, which requires preparing and controlling massive quantum states - a formidable experimental challenge. We propose an alternative strategy that circumvents the need for quantum state engineering. We show that, if gravity is classical, it must necessarily modify momentum statistics in a non-unitary way. We consider the corresponding linearized master equation for two harmonically trapped objects interacting gravitationally and establish a lower bound on the noise that any classical gravitational interaction must induce. We then outline an experimental protocol based on a high-precision torsion pendulum at millikelvin temperatures, showing that the predicted diffusion, if present, is in principle detectable with near-term technology. Our approach offers a novel route to testing the classical versus quantum nature of gravity without requiring macroscopic quantum superpositions or precise control of the system's quantum state, thereby significantly reducing the experimental complexity.

From equivalent Lagrangians to inequivalent open quantum system dynamics

Lagrangians can differ by a total derivative without altering the equations of motion, thus encoding the same physics. This is true both classically and quantum mechanically. We show, however, that in the context of open quantum systems, two Lagrangians that differ by a total derivative can lead to inequivalent reduced dynamics. While these Lagrangians are connected via unitary transformations at the level of the global system-plus-environment description, the equivalence breaks down after tracing out the environment. We argue that only those Lagrangians for which the canonical and mechanical momenta of the system coincide lead to operationally meaningful dynamics. Applying this insight to quantum electrodynamics (QED), we derive the master equation for bremsstrahlung due to an accelerated non-relativistic electron upto second order in the interaction. The resulting reduced dynamics predicts decoherence in the position basis and closely matches the Caldeira-Leggett form, thus resolving previous discrepancies in the literature. Our findings have implications for both QED and gravitational decoherence, where similar ambiguities arise.

Entanglement in Markovian hybrid classical-quantum theories of gravity

Markovian master equations underlie many areas of modern physics and, despite their apparent simplicity, they encode a rich and complex dynamics which is still under active research. We identify a class of continuous variable Markovian master equations for which positivity and complete positivity become equivalent. We apply this result to characterize the positivity of the partially transposed evolution of bipartite Gaussian systems, which encodes the dynamics of entanglement. Finally, the entangling properties of models of classical gravity interacting with quantum matter are investigated in the context of the experimental proposals to detect gravitationally induced entanglement. We prove that entanglement generation can indeed take place within these models. We prove that entanglement generation can indeed take place within these models. In particular, by focusing on the Diósi-Penrose model for two gravitationally interacting masses, we show that entanglement-based experiments have the potential to either falsify the model entirely or constrain the free parameter of the model $R_0$ up to values six orders of magnitude above the current state of the art.
