Worldsheet kinematics, dressing factors and odd crossing in mixed-flux AdS3 backgrounds

String theory on AdS${}_3\times$ S${}^3\times$ T${}^4$ geometries supported by a combination of NS-NS and R-R charges is believed to be integrable. We elucidate the kinematics and analytic structure of worldsheet excitations in mixed charge and pure NS-NS backgrounds, when expressed in momentum, Zhukovsky variables and the rapidity $u$ which appears in the quantum spectral curve. We discuss the relations between fundamental and bound state excitations and the role of fusion in constraining and determining the S matrices of these theories. We propose a scalar dressing factor consistent with a novel $u$-plane periodicity and comment on its close relation to the XXZ model at roots of unity. We solve the odd part of crossing and show that our solution is consistent with fusion and reduces in the relativistic limit to dressing phases previously found in the literature.

Non-relativistic string monodromies

Spectral curve methods proved to be powerful techniques in the context of relativistic integrable string theories, since they allow to derive the semiclassical spectrum from the minimal knowledge of a Lax pair and a classical string solution. In this paper we initiate the study of the spectral curve for non-relativistic strings in AdS$_5\times S^5$. First we show that for string solutions whose Lax connection is independent of $σ$, the eigenvalues of the monodromy matrix do not have any spectral parameter dependence. We remark that this particular behaviour also appears for relativistic strings in flat space. Second, for some simple non-relativistic string solutions where the path ordered exponential of the Lax connection can be computed, we show that the monodromy matrix is either diagonalisable with quasi-momenta independent of the spectral parameter, or non-diagonalisable. For the latter case, we propose a notion of generalised quasi-momenta, based on maximal abelian subalgebras, which retain a dependence on the spectral parameter.

Protected states in $\mbox{AdS}_3$ backgrounds from integrability

We write down the Algebraic Bethe Ansatz for string theory on $\mbox{AdS}_3\times\mbox{S}^3\times\mbox{T}^4$ and $\mbox{AdS}_3\times\mbox{S}^3\times\mbox{K3}$ in its orbifold limits. We use it to determine the wave-functions of protected closed strings in these backgrounds and prove that their energies are protected to all orders in $α'$. We further apply the ABA to find the wave functions of protected states of $\mbox{AdS}_3\times\mbox{S}^3\times\mbox{S}^3\times \mbox{S}^1$ and its $\mathbf{Z}_2$ orbifold. Our findings match with protected spectrum calculations from supergravity, $\mbox{Sym}^N$ orbifolds and apply to the complete moduli space of these theories, excluding orbifold blow-up modes for which further analysis is necessary.

On the singularities of the R-R AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4 S matrix

We investigate the analytic properties of the exact magnon S matrix of string theory on AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4 with R-R flux. We show that the previously proposed dressing factors have the exact double-pole/zero structure expected from Landau box diagrams. This constitutes a strong consistency check of our dressing factors, much as the Dorey-Hofman-Maldacena poles do for the all-loop dressing factor in AdS_5 x S^5.

The Effectiveness of Relativistic Invariance in AdS${}_3$

We use relativistic invariance to investigate two aspects of integrable AdS${}_3$ string theory. Firstly, we write down the all-loop TBA equations for the massless sector of the theory with R-R flux, using the recently discovered hidden relativistic symmetry. Secondly, for the low-energy relativistic limit of the theory with NS-NS flux we write down the S matrix, dressing factors and TBA. We find that the integrable system coincides with a restriction to AdS${}_3$ of the relativistic q-deformed AdS${}_5$ theory. We also comment on the relativistic limit of the the small-$k$ NS-NS theory.

Closed Strings and Moduli in $AdS_3/CFT_2$

String theory on $AdS_3 \times S^3 \times T^4$ has 20 moduli. We investigate how the perturbative closed string spectrum changes as we move around this moduli space in both the RR and NSNS flux backgrounds. We find that, at weak string coupling, only four of the moduli affect the energies. In the RR background the only effect of these moduli is to change the radius of curvature of the background. On the other hand, in the NSNS background, the moduli introduce worldsheet interactions which enable the use of integrability methods to solve the spectral problem. Our results show that the worldsheet theory is integrable across the 20 dimensional moduli space.

Protected string spectrum in AdS3/CFT2 from worldsheet integrability

We derive the protected closed-string spectra of AdS3/CFT2 dual pairs with 16 supercharges at arbitrary values of the string tension and of the three-form fluxes. These follow immediately from the all-loop Bethe equations for the spectra of the integrable worldsheet theories. Further, representing the underlying integrable systems as spin chains, we find that their dynamics involves length-changing interactions and that protected states correspond to gapless excitations above the Berenstein-Maldacena-Nastase vacuum. In the case of AdS3 x S3 x T4 the degeneracies of such operators precisely match those of the dual CFT2 and the supergravity spectrum. On the other hand, we find that for AdS3 x S3 x S3 x S1 there are fewer protected states than previous supergravity calculations had suggested. In particular, protected states have the same su(2) charge with respect to the two three-spheres.

On the Dressing Factors, Bethe Equations and Yangian Symmetry of Strings on AdS3 x S3 x T4

Integrability is believed to underlie the AdS3/CFT2 correspondence with sixteen supercharges. We elucidate the role of massless modes within this integrable framework. Firstly, we find the dressing factors that enter the massless and mixed-mass worldsheet S matrix. Secondly, we derive a set of all-loop Bethe Equations for the closed strings, determine their symmetries and weak-coupling limit. Thirdly, we investigate the underlying Yangian symmetry in the massless sector and show that it fits into the general framework of Yangian integrability. In addition, we compare our S matrix in the near-relativistic limit with recent perturbative worldsheet calculations of Sundin and Wulff.

On the spectrum of AdS3 x S3 x T4 strings with Ramond-Ramond flux

We analyze the spectrum of perturbative closed strings on AdS3 x S3 x T4 with Ramond-Ramond flux using integrable methods. By solving the crossing equations we determine the massless and mixed-mass dressing factors of the worldsheet S matrix and derive the Bethe equations. Using these, we construct the underlying integrable spin chain and show that it reproduces the reducible spin chain conjectured at weak coupling in arXiv:1211.1952. We find that the string-theory massless modes are described by gapless excitations of the spin chain. The resulting degeneracy of vacua matches precisely the protected supergravity spectrum found by de Boer.

The $\mathrm{AdS}_3\times \mathrm{S}^3\times \mathrm{S}^3\times\mathrm{S}^1$ worldsheet S matrix

We investigate type IIB strings on $\mathrm{AdS}_3\times \mathrm{S}^3\times \mathrm{S}^3\times\mathrm{S}^1$ with mixed Ramond-Ramond (R-R) and Neveu-Schwarz-Neveu-Schwarz (NS-NS) flux. By suitably gauge-fixing the closed string Green-Schwarz (GS) action of this theory, we derive the off-shell symmetry algebra and its representations. We use these to determine the non-perturbative worldsheet S-matrix of fundamental excitations in the theory. The analysis involves both massive and massless modes in complete generality. The S-matrix we find involves a number of phase factors, which in turn satisfy crossing equations that we also determine. We comment on the nature of the heaviest modes of the theory, but leave their identification either as composites or bound-states to a future investigation.

Integrability and the Conformal Field Theory of the Higgs branch

In the context of the AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ correspondence, we investigate the Higgs branch CFT$_2$. Witten showed that states localised near the small instanton singularity can be described in terms of vector multiplet variables. This theory has a planar, weak-coupling limit, in which anomalous dimensions of single-trace composite operators can be calculated. At one loop, the calculation reduces to finding the spectrum of a spin-chain with nearest-neighbour interactions. This CFT$_2$ spin-chain matches precisely the one that was previously found as the weak-coupling limit of the integrable system describing the AdS$_3$ side of the duality. We compute the one-loop dilatation operator in a non-trivial compact subsector and show that it corresponds to an integrable spin-chain Hamiltonian. This provides the first direct evidence of integrability on the CFT$_2$ side of the correspondence.

The complete worldsheet S matrix of superstrings on AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4 with mixed three-form flux

We determine the off-shell symmetry algebra and representations of Type IIB superstring theory on $AdS_3\times S^3 \times T^4$ with mixed R-R and NS-NS three-form flux. We use these to derive the non-perturbative worldsheet S matrix of fundamental excitations of the superstring theory. Our analysis includes both massive and massless modes and shows how turning on mixed three-form flux results in an integrable deformation of the S matrix of the pure R-R theory.

The complete AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4 worldsheet S-matrix

We derive the non-perturbative worldsheet S matrix for fundamental excitations of Type IIB superstring theory on AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4 with Ramond-Ramond flux. To this end, we study the off-shell symmetry algebra of the theory and its representations. We use these to determine the S matrix up to scalar factors and we derive the crossing equations that these scalar factors satisfy. Our treatment automatically includes fundamental massless excitations, removing a long-standing obstacle in using integrability to study the AdS_3/CFT_2 correspondence. The present paper contains a detailed derivation of results first announced in arXiv:1403.4543.

Finite-gap equations for strings on AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4 with mixed 3-form flux

We study superstrings on AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4 supported by a combination of Ramond-Ramond and Neveu-Schwarz-Neveu-Schwarz three form fluxes, and construct a set of finite-gap equations that describe the classical string spectrum. Using the recently proposed all-loop S-matrix we write down the all-loop Bethe ansatz equations for the massive sector. In the thermodynamic limit the Bethe ansatz reproduces the finite-gap equations. As part of this derivation we propose expressions for the leading order dressing phases. These phases differ from the well-known Arutyunov-Frolov-Staudacher phase that appears in the pure Ramond-Ramond case. We also consider the one-loop quantization of the algebraic curve and determine the one-loop corrections to the dressing phases. Finally we consider some classical string solutions including finite size giant magnons and circular strings.

All-loop worldsheet S matrix for AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4

We obtain the all-loop worldsheet S matrix for fundamental excitations on AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4 by studying the off-shell symmetry algebra of the superspace action in lightcone gauge. The massless modes, unaccounted for in earlier works, are automatically included in our treatment. Their exact dispersion relation is found to be non-relativistic, of giant-magnon form and their scattering is naturally well-defined. This opens the way to a complete investigation of AdS_3/CFT_2 integrability.

Dressing phases of AdS3/CFT2

We determine the all-loop dressing phases of the AdS3/CFT2 integrable system related to type IIB string theory on AdS3 x S3 x T4 by solving the recently found crossing relations and studying their singularity structure. The two resulting phases present a novel structure with respect to the ones appearing in AdS5/CFT4 and AdS4/CFT3. In the strongly-coupled regime, their leading order reduces to the universal Arutyunov-Frolov-Staudacher phase as expected. We also compute their sub-leading order and compare it with recent one-loop perturbative results, and comment on their weak-coupling expansion.

The all-loop integrable spin-chain for strings on AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4: the massive sector

We bootstrap the all-loop dynamic S-matrix for the homogeneous psu(1,1|2)^2 spin-chain believed to correspond to the discretization of the massive modes of string theory on AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4. The S-matrix is the tensor product of two copies of the su(1|1)^2 invariant S-matrix constructed recently for the d(2,1;alpha)^2 chain, and depends on two antisymmetric dressing phases. We write down the crossing equations that these phases have to satisfy. Furthermore, we present the corresponding Bethe Ansatz, which differs from the one previously conjectured, and discuss how our construction matches several recent perturbative calculations.

A dynamic su(1|1)^2 S-matrix for AdS3/CFT2

We derive the S-matrix for the d(2,1;alpha)^2 symmetric spin-chain of AdS3/CFT2 by considering the centrally extended su(1|1)^2 algebra acting on the spin-chain excitations. The S-matrix is determined uniquely up to four scalar factors, which are further constrained by a set of crossing relations. The resulting scattering includes non-trivial processes between magnons of different masses that were previously overlooked.
