Multiplicity of negative one of independence polynomials of graphs

We initiate the study of the multiplicity of negative one of independence polynomials of graphs. In this article, we simply refer to this as the \emph{multiplicity} of a graph. As applications, we provide a graph-theoretic description of trees whose independence complexes are contractible, give a new sufficient condition for independence polynomials of graphs to be log-concave, and finally, determine possible pairs $(\operatorname{mult}_{-1}P_G, α(G))$, where $P_G$ denotes the independence polynomial of $G$, and $α(G)$ the independence number. The study of the pairs $(\operatorname{mult}_{-1}P_G, α(G))$ is equivalent to finding all pairs of the numerator degree and denominator degree of the Hilbert series of the edge ideal of $G$. We also use spectral graph theory to obtain results on the multiplicity of line graphs of forests. Finally, we give some translations and applications in combinatorial commutative algebra.

Simis and packing properties of Alexander dual of connected ideals

In this article, we investigate when the ordinary and symbolic powers of the Alexander dual of connected ideals of graphs coincide, and provide a complete classification of all such graphs. Furthermore, we prove Conforti--Cornuèjols conjecture for this class of ideals.

On licci squarefree monomial ideals

We study the licci property for several classes of squarefree monomial ideals arising from graphs and related combinatorial structures. We characterize licci bi-Cohen-Macaulay squarefree monomial ideals, complementary edge ideals, $t$-path ideals of cycles, and $(t-1)$-suspensions of graphs. Consequently, the full list of licci path ideals of trees is obtained. This work extends the known classification of licci edge ideals to a broader family of path ideals.

Projective monomial curves associated to numerical semigroups with multiplicity $e$, width $e-1$, and embedding dimension $e-2$

Numerical semigroups with multiplicity $e$, width $e-1$, and embedding dimension $e-2$ are of the form $$S(e,m,n) = \langle \{e, e+1, \ldots, 2e-1\} \setminus \{e+m, e+n\} \rangle,$$ for some $1 \leq m < n \leq e-2$. Inspired by the work of Sally, Herzog and Stamate studied the special case $S(e,2,3)$, which they called the ``Sally numerical semigroups''. Recently, Dubey et. al. computed a minimal generating set of the defining ideal of the numerical semigroups $S(e,m,n)$ for $m \geq 2$. In this article, we first obtain an analog for the numerical semigroups $S(e,1,n)$, and then shift our focus to the projective monomial curves in $\mathbb{P}^{e-2}$ defined by the semigroups $S(e,m,n)$. We obtain a Gröbner basis for the defining ideal of the projective monomial curves associated to the semigroups $S(e,m,n)$. Moreover, we provide characterizations of Cohen--Macaulay and Gorenstein properties of these curves. Specifically, we prove that these are Cohen--Macaulay if and only if $(m,n) \neq (e-4,e-3)$, and Gorenstein if and only if $(e,m,n)\in \{ (4,1,2), (5,2,3)\}$. Furthermore, when these curves are Cohen--Macaulay, we compute the Castelnuovo--Mumford regularity of their coordinate ring.

Buchsbaumness of finite complement simplicial affine semigroups

In this article, we classify all Buchsbaum simplicial affine semigroups whose complement in their (integer) rational polyhedral cone is finite. We show that such a semigroup is Buchsbaum if and only if its set of gaps is equal to its set of pseudo-Frobenius elements. Furthermore, we provide a complete structure of these affine semigroups. In the case of affine semigroups with maximal embedding dimension, we provide an explicit formula for the cardinality of the minimal presentation in terms of the number of extremal rays, the embedding dimension, and the genus. Finally, we observe that, unlike the complete intersection, Cohen-Macaulay, and Gorenstein properties, the Buchsbaum property is not preserved under gluing of affine semigroups.

Symmetric generalized numerical semigroups in $\mathbb{N}^d$ with embedding dimension $2d+1$

In this article, we classify all symmetric generalized numerical semigroups in $\mathbb{N}^d$ of embedding dimension $2d+1$. Consequently, we show that in this case the property of being symmetric is equivalent to have a unique maximal gap with respect to natural partial order in $\mathbb{N}^d$. Moreover, we deduce that when $d>1$, there does not exist any generalized numerical semigroup of embedding dimension $2d+1$, which is almost symmetric but not symmetric.

On unboundedness of some invariants of $\mathcal{C}$-semigroups

In this article, we first prove that the type of an affine semigroup ring is equal to the number of maximal elements of the Apéry set with respect to the set of exponents of the monomials, which form a maximal regular sequence. Further, we consider $\mathcal{C}$-semigroups in $\mathbb{N}^d$ and prove that the notions of symmetric and almost symmetric $\mathcal{C}$-semigroups are independent of term orders. We further investigate the conductor and the Apéry set of a $\mathcal{C}$-semigroup with respect to a minimal extremal ray. Building upon this, we extend the notion of reduced type to $\mathcal{C}$-semigroups and study its extremal behavior. For all $d$ and fixed $e \geq 2d$, we give a class of $\mathcal{C}$-semigroups of embedding dimension $e$ such that both the type and the reduced type do not have any upper bound in terms of the embedding dimension. We further explore irreducible decompositions of a $\mathcal{C}$-semigroup and give a lower bound on the irreducible components in an irreducible decomposition. Consequently, we deduce that for each positive integer $k$, there exists a $\mathcal{C}$-semigroup $S$ such that the number of irreducible components of $S$ is at least $k$.

Regularity of two classes of Cohen-Macaulay binomial edge ideals

Some recent investigations indicate that for the classification of Cohen-Macaulay binomial edge ideals, it suffices to consider biconnected graphs with some whiskers attached (in short, `block with whiskers'). This paper provides explicit combinatorial formulae for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of two specific classes of Cohen-Macaulay binomial edge ideals: (i) chain of cycles with whiskers and (ii) $r$-regular $r$-connected block with whiskers. For the first type, we introduce a new invariant of graphs in terms of the number of blocks in certain induced block graphs, and this invariant may help determine the regularity of other classes of binomial edge ideals. For the second type, we present the formula as a linear function of $r$.

Reduced type of certain numerical semigroup rings

For a reduced one-dimensional complete local $k$-algebra $R$, Huneke et al. (Res. Math. Sci., 8(4), paper no. 60, 2021) introduced an important invariant, the reduced type. In this article, we study the extremal behavior of reduced type of some special numerical semigroup rings. For a numerical semigroup ring, the behavior of reduced type can be studied by analyzing the set of pseudo-Frobenius elements of the numerical semigroup. We give complete descriptions of pseudo-Frobenius elements of Bresinsky's numerical semigroups and duplication of numerical semigroups. Further, we explore the extremal behavior of reduced type for the associated semigroup rings.

Affine semigroups of maximal projective dimension-II

If the Krull dimension of the semigroup ring is greater than one, then affine semigroups of maximal projective dimension ($\mathrm{MPD}$) are not Cohen-Macaulay, but they may be Buchsbaum. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for simplicial $\mathrm{MPD}$-semigroups to be Buchsbaum in terms of pseudo-Frobenius elements. We give certain characterizations of $\prec$-almost symmetric $\mathcal{C}$-semigroups. When the cone is full, we prove the irreducible $\mathcal{C}$-semigroups, and $\prec$-almost symmetric $\mathcal{C}$-semigroups with Betti-type three satisfy the extended Wilf's conjecture. For $e \geq 4$, we give a class of MPD-semigroups in $\mathbb{N}^2$ such that there is no upper bound on the Betti-type in terms of embedding dimension $e$. Thus, the Betti-type may not be a bounded function of the embedding dimension. We further explore the submonoids of $\mathbb{N}^d$, which satisfy the Arf property.

Derivation module and the Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity of the co-ordinate ring of a projective monomial curve

Let $n_0, n_1, \ldots, n_p$ be a sequence of positive integers such that $n_0 < n_1 < \cdots < n_p$ and $\mathrm{gcd}(n_0,n_1, \ldots,n_p) = 1$. Let $S = \langle (0,n_p), (n_0,n_p-n_0),\ldots,(n_{p-1},n_p-n_{p-1}), (n_p,0) \rangle$ be an affine semigroup in $\mathbb{N}^2$. The semigroup ring $k[S]$ is the co-ordinate ring of the projective monomial curve in the projective space $\mathbb{P}_k^{p+1}$, which is defined parametrically by \begin{center} $x_0 = v^{n_p}, \quad x_1 = u^{n_0}v^{n_p-n_0},\quad \ldots , \quad x_p= u^{n_{p-1}}v^{n_p-n_{p-1}}, \quad x_{p+1} = u^{n_p}$. \end{center} In this article, we consider the case when $n_0, n_1, \ldots, n_p$ forms an arithmetic sequence, and give an explicit set of minimal generators for the derivation module $\mathrm{Der}_k(k[S])$. Further, we give an explicit formula for the Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity of the co-ordinate ring of a projective monomial curve.

On Row-Factorization relations of certain numerical semigroups

Let $H$ be a numerical semigroup minimally generated by an almost arithmetic sequence. We give a description of a possible row-factorization $(\RF)$ matrix for each pseudo-Frobenius element of $H.$ Further, when $H$ is symmetric and has embedding dimension 4 or 5, we prove that the defining ideal is minimally generated by $\RF$-relations.

We generalize the notion of symmetric semigroups, pseudo symmetric semigroups, and row factorization matrices for pseudo Frobenius elements of numerical semigroups to the case of semigroups with maximal projective dimension (MPD semigroups).

On the algebraic invariants of certain affine semigroup algebras

Let $a$ and $d$ be two linearly independent vectors in $\mathbb{N}^2$, over the field of rational numbers. For a positive integer $k \geq 2$, consider the sequence $a, a+d, \ldots, a+kd$ such that the affine semigroup $S_{a,d,k} = \langle a, a+d, \ldots, a+kd \rangle$ is minimally generated by this sequence. We study the properties of affine semigroup algebra $k[S_{a,d,k}]$ associated to this semigroup. We prove that $k[S_{a,d,k}]$ is always Cohen-Macaulay and it is Gorenstein if and only if $k=2$. For $k=2,3,4$, we explicitly compute the syzygies, minimal graded free resolution and Hilbert series of $k[S_{a,d,k}].$ We also give a minimal generating set and a Gröbner basis of the defining ideal of $k[S_{a,d,k}].$ Consequently, we prove that $k[S_{a,d,k}]$ is Koszul. Finally, we prove that the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of $k[S_{a,d,k}]$ is $1$ for any $a,d,k.$
