Nuclear effects in neutral current quasi-elastic neutrino interactions

The interpretation of the charged (CCQE) and neutral (NCE) current quasi elastic events collected by the MiniBooNE collaboration involves a number of unresolved issues. While it has been suggested that the data can be explained in terms of an effective nucleon axial mass, $M_A$, the results of our theoretical calculations suggest that the CCQE and NCE samples cannot be described by the same value of $M_A$. We argue that the disagreement between theory and data may arise from the uncertainties associated with the flux average procedure. We also analyze the role of the strange quark in NCE interactions and find that, due to a cancellation between proton and neutron contributions, it turns out to be negligible.

Modeling neutrino-nucleus interactions. Do we need a new paradigm?

The availability of the double-differential charged-current neutrino cross section, measured by the MiniBooNE collaboration using a carbon target, allows for a systematic comparison of nuclear effects in quasi-elastic electron and neutrino scattering. The results of theoretical studies based on the impulse approximation scheme and state-of-the-art models of the nuclear spectral functions suggest that the electron cross section and the flux averaged neutrino cross sections corresponding to the same target and seemingly comparable kinematical conditions can not be described within the same theoretical scheme using the value ofthe nucleon axial mass obtained from deuterium measurements. I analyze the assumptions underlying the treatment of electron scattering data, and argue that the development of a new {\em paradigm}, suitable for application to processes in which the lepton kinematics is not fully determined, will be required.

Density-dependent nucleon-nucleon interaction from three-nucleon forces

Microscopic calculations based on realistic nuclear hamiltonians, while yielding accurate results for the energies of the ground and low-lying excited states of nuclei with $A \leq 12$, fail to reproduce the empirical equilibrium properties of nuclear matter, that are known to be significantly affected by three-nucleon forces. We discuss a scheme suitable to construct a density-dependent two-nucleon potential, in which the effects of $n$-particle interactions can be included by integrating out the degrees of freedom of $(n-2)$-nucleons. Our approach, based on the formalism of correlated basis function and state-of-the-art models of the two- and three-nucleon potentials, leads to an effective interactionthat can be easily employed in nuclear matter calculations, yielding results in good agreement with those obtained from the underlying three-body potential.

Analysis of the Q^2-dependence of charged-current quasielastic processes in neutrino-nucleus interactions

We discuss the observed disagreement between the Q^2 distributions of neutrino-nucleus quasielastic events, measured by a number of recent experiments, and the predictions of Monte Carlo simulations based on the relativistic Fermi gas model. The results of our analysis suggest that these discrepancies are likely to be ascribable to both the breakdown of the impulse approximation and the limitations of the Fermi gas description. Several issues related to the extraction of the Q^2 distributions from the experimental data are also discussed, and new kinematical variables, which would allow for an improved analysis, are proposed.

Electroweak nuclear response in quasi-elastic regime

The availability of the double-differential charged-current neutrino cross section, measured by the MiniBooNE collaboration using a carbon target, allows for a systematic comparison of nuclear effects in quasi-elastic electron and neutrino scattering. The results of our study, based on the impulse approximation scheme and a state-of-the-art model of the nuclear spectral functions, suggest that the electron cross section and the flux averaged neutrino cross sections, corresponding to the same target and comparable kinematical conditions, cannot be described within the same theoretical approach using the value of the nucleon axial mass obtained from deuterium measurements. We analyze the assumptions underlying the treatment of electron scattering data, and argue that the description of neutrino data will require a new {\em paradigm}, suitable for application to processes in which the lepton kinematics is not fully determined.

Shear viscosity of $β$-stable nuclear matter

Viscosity plays a critical role in determining the stability of rotating neutron stars. We report the results of a calculation of the shear viscosity of $β$~-~stable matter, carried out using an effective interaction based on a state-of-the-art nucleon-nucleon potential and the formalism of correlated basis functions. Within our approach the equation of state, determining the proton fraction, and the nucleon-nucleon scattering probability are consistently obtained from the same dynamical model. The results show that, while the neutron contribution to the viscosity is always dominant, above nuclear saturation density the electron contribution becomes appreciable.

Microscopic calculations of transport properties of neutron matter

We discuss the results of calculations of the shear viscosity and thermal conductivity of pure neutron matter, carried out within the Landau-Abrikosov-Khalatnikov formalism. The probability of neutron-neutron collisions in the nuclear medium has been obtained from a realistic potential, using both the correlated basis function and the $G$-matrix approach. The results of our work indicate that medium modifications of nucleon-nucleon scattering are large, their inclusion leading to a dramatic enhancement of the transport coefficients. On the other hand, the results obtained from the two theoretical schemes appear to be in fairly good agreement.

Correlation effects on the weak response of nuclear matter

The consistent description of the nuclear response at low and high momentum transfer requires a unified dynamical model, suitable to account for both short- and long-range correlation effects. We report the results of a study of the charged current weak response of symmetric nuclear matter, carried out using an effective interaction obtained from a realistic model of the nucleon-nucleon force within the formalism of correlated basis functions. Our approach allows for a clear identification of the kinematical regions in which different interaction effects dominate.

Impact of nuclear effects on the determination of the nucleon axial mass

We analize the influence of nuclear effects on the determination of the nucleon axial mass from nuclear cross sections. Our work is based on a formalism widely applied to describe electron-nucleus scattering data in the impulse approximation regime. The results of numerical calculations show that correlation effects, not taken into account by the relativistic Fermi gas model, sizably affect the $Q^2$-dependence of the cross section. However, their inclusion does not appear to explain the large values of the axial mass recently reported by the K2K and MiniBooNE collaborations.

Unified description of equation of state and transport properties of nuclear matter

Correlated basis function perturbation theory and the formalism of cluster expansions have been recently employed to obtain an effective interaction from a state-of-the-art nucleon nucleon potential model. The approach based on the effective interaction allows for a consistent description of the nuclear matter ground state and nucleon-nucleon scattering in the nuclear medium. This paper reports the the results of numerical calculations of different properties of nuclear and neutron matter, including the equation of state and the shear viscosity and thermal conductivity transport coefficients, carried out using the effective interaction.

Many-Body Theory of the Electroweak Nuclear Response

After a brief review of the theoretical description of nuclei based on nonrelativistic many-body theory and realistic hamiltonians, these lectures focus on its application to the analysis of the electroweak response. Special emphasis is given to electron-nucleus scattering, whose experimental study has provided a wealth of information on nuclear structure and dynamics, exposing the limitations of the shell model. The extension of the formalism to the case of neutrino-nucleus interactions, whose quantitative understanding is required to reduce the systematic uncertainty of neutrino oscillation experiments, is also discussed.

Inclusive electron spectrum in the region of pion production in electron-nucleus scattering and the effect of the quasi-elastic interaction

We have carried out a calculation of the inclusive electron scattering cross section off oxygen in the kinematical region corresponding to beam energies between 700 and 1200 MeV, where quasielastic scattering and single pion production are the dominant reaction mechanisms. The formalism developed and successfully applied to describe quasielastic scattering has been extended to include both delta production and non-resonant pion production. The results are in fairly good agreement with experimental data over the whole range of energy transfer, including the dip region between the quasielastic peak and the first resonance.

Within this formalism, the widely used expressions in terms of spectral functions can be derived in a consistent and rigorous fashion. The results of recent applications to the study of the inclusive electron-nucleus cross section in the impulse approximation regime are brielfy analyzed.

Shear viscosity of neutron matter from realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions

The calculation of transport properties of Fermi liquids, based on the formalism developed by Abrikosov and Khalatnikov, requires the knowledge of the probability of collisions between quasiparticles in the vicinity of the Fermi surface. We have carried out a numerical study of the shear viscosity of pure neutron matter, whose value plays a pivotal role in determining the stability of rotating neutron stars, in which these processes are described using a state-of-the-art nucleon-nucleon potential model. Within our approach medium modifications of the scattering cross section are consistently taken into account, through an effective interaction obtained from the matrix elements of the bare interaction between correlated states. Inclusion of medium effects lead to a large increase of the viscosity at densities larger than $\sim 0.1$ fm^{-3}.

Inclusive quasi-elastic electron-nucleus scattering

This article presents a review of the field of inclusive quasi-elastic electron-nucleus scattering. It discusses the approach used to measure the data and includes a compilation of data available in numerical form. The theoretical approaches used to interpret the data are presented. A number of results obtained from the comparison between experiment and calculation are then reviewed. The analogies and differences to other fields of physics exploiting quasi-elastic scattering from composite systems are pointed out.

Quark matter imprint on Gravitational Waves from oscillating stars

We discuss the possibility that the detection of gravitational waves emitted by compact stars may allow to constrain the MIT bag model of quark matter equation of state. Our results show that the combined knowledge of the frequency of the emitted gravitational wave and of the mass, or the radiation radius, of the source allows one to discriminate between strange stars and neutron stars and set stringent bounds on the bag constants.
