How greedy is the Universe? An entropy ledger and a causal envelope for early black hole growth

The entropy of the observable Universe is dominated, by fifteen orders of magnitude, by the horizons of supermassive black holes, and gravitational collapse into black holes has often been proposed as the Universe's preferred channel of entropy production. We examine this suggestion quantitatively, and the analysis largely refutes it. Three results are presented. First, an entropy production history: the rate $dS/dt(z)$ resolved by channel, from the star formation history and a Soltan-normalized accretion history. Black hole horizon growth exceeds all radiative channels by a factor $\sim 10^{16-17}$ after the first seeds; the total rate peaked near $z\approx 1$--$2$ and has since declined; the late peak is structural, because horizon entropy production weights accretion by the accretor's mass and the most massive accretors are assembled last. Second, a causal-hydrodynamic envelope: the fastest entropy-producing trajectory permitted by causality and gas dynamics, $\dot M \sim c_s^3/G$ in atomic-cooling halos, which reaches $10^{7\pm1}\,M_\odot$ by $z\approx 8$--$10$ without radiative throttling, and whose phenomenology (obscured, radiatively inefficient, X-ray weak, red) closely resembles the JWST little red dots. The realized-to-envelope ratio defines an efficiency $F(z)$, which remains between $10^{-7}$ and $10^{-4}$ throughout $4\le z\le 12$, even under the most generous JWST-era bracket. Third, order-of-magnitude no-go results: Boltzmann weighting of collapse channels by entropy gain, dissipative adaptation applied to self-gravitating systems, and any strong maximum-entropy-production principle in cosmology all fail at leading order, by factors of up to $10^{16}$. The Universe produces entropy overwhelmingly through black holes, yet remains far below its own envelope at all times. Whatever selects cosmic structure, it does not maximize entropy production.

Torsional black holes and wormholes in Einstein-Cartan-Maxwell gravity with a conformal scalar field

We formulate a one-parameter extension of Weyl transformations in first-order gravity and show that it defines a conformally coupled scalar sector with dynamical torsion. The construction reduces to the standard torsionless conformal coupling in the limit $\lambda\to 1$. In the corresponding Einstein-Cartan-Maxwell theory, we derive exact static solutions in asymptotically flat and asymptotically locally AdS spacetimes. These solutions describe scalar-dressed black holes, regular black holes, and traversable wormholes, depending on the values of the integration constants and of the deformation parameter. We show that torsion can regularize the scalar field and, for suitable branches, also improve the geometric singularity structure. In the AdS sector, the existence of topological black holes requires a nonvanishing electric charge. These results provide new exact examples of regular and torsional configurations in four-dimensional gravity.

AdS Carroll Structures from Poincaré Isomorphism: Asymptotic Symmetry Analysis

Starting from the isomorphism between the AdS Carroll and Poincaré algebras, we map the three-dimensional asymptotically flat solutions of Poincaré gravity into an AdS Carroll spacetime. We show the mapped solutions satisfy the field equations of the Chern-Simons formulation of AdS Carroll gravity and exhibit a Carroll geometry structure. Despite the presence of a negative cosmological constant in the mapped spacetime, the algebra of the canonical generators of the asymptotic symmetries is given by the $\mathfrak{bms}_3$ algebra.

Thermodynamics of the three-dimensional black hole with torsion

The stationary black hole solution of a Chern-Simons model based on the semi-simple extension of the Poincaré gauge group is studied. The solution resembles the metric properties of the BTZ geometry but contains, in addition, non-vanishing torsion. The global structure of spacetime is characterized by three conserved charges: two associated with the mass and angular momentum and one extra constant triggered by spacetime torsion. Consequently, we show that the entropy deviates from the standard Bekenstein-Hawking value and discuss the implications of torsional charges in the context of black hole thermodynamics.

Wave Operators, Torsion, and Weitzenböck Identities

We offer a mathematical toolkit for the study of waves propagating on a background manifold with nonvanishing torsion. Examples include electromagnetic and gravitational waves on a spacetime with torsion. The toolkit comprises generalized versions of the Lichnerowicz-de Rham and the Beltrami wave operators, and the Weitzenböck identity relating them on Riemann-Cartan geometries. The construction applies to any field belonging to a matrix representation of a Lie (super) algebra containing an $\mathfrak{so}$ subalgebra. Using these tools, we analyze the propagation of different massless waves in the eikonal (geometric optics) limit in a model-independent way and find that they all must propagate at the speed of light along null torsionless geodesics, in full agreement with the multimessenger observation GW170817/GRB170817A. We also discuss how gravitational waves could be used as a probe to test for torsion.

The Spin Tensor of Dark Matter and the Hubble Parameter Tension

Allowing for a nonvanishing spin tensor for cold dark matter ($ω_{\mathrm{DM}}=0$) has the consequence of giving rise to an effective $\mathrm{FLRW}$ dynamics with a small negative barotropic constant for an effective dark matter density ($-1/3<ω_{\mathrm{eff}}\leq0$). This turns out to solve the Hubble parameter tension in a straightforward way.

Luminal Propagation of Gravitational Waves in Scalar-tensor Theories: The Case for Torsion

Scalar-tensor gravity theories with a nonminimal Gauss-Bonnet coupling typically lead to an anomalous propagation speed for gravitational waves, and have therefore been tightly constrained by multimessenger observations such as GW170817/GRB170817A. In this paper we show that this is not a general feature of scalar-tensor theories, but rather a consequence of assuming that spacetime torsion vanishes identically. At least for the case of a nonminimal Gauss-Bonnet coupling, removing the torsionless condition restores the canonical dispersion relation and therefore the correct propagation speed for gravitational waves. To achieve this result we develop a new approach, based on the first-order formulation of gravity, to deal with perturbations on these Riemann-Cartan geometries.

Linear and Second-order Geometry Perturbations on Spacetimes with Torsion

In order to study gravitational waves in any realistic astrophysical scenario, one must consider geometry perturbations up to second order. Here, we present a general technique for studying linear and quadratic perturbations on a spacetime with torsion. Besides the standard metric mode, a "torsionon" perturbation mode appears. This torsional mode will be able to propagate only in a certain kind of theories.

Semi-simple enlargement of the $\mathfrak{bms}_3$ algebra from a $\mathfrak{so}(2,2)\oplus\mathfrak{so}(2,1)$ Chern-Simons theory

In this work we present a BMS-like ansatz for a Chern-Simons theory based on the semi-simple enlargement of the Poincaré symmetry, also known as AdS-Lorentz algebra. We start by showing that this ansatz is general enough to contain all the relevant stationary solutions of this theory and provides with suitable boundary conditions for the corresponding gauge connection. We find an explicit realization of the asymptotic symmetry at null infinity, which defines a semi-simple enlargement of the $\mathfrak{bms}_3$ algebra and turns out to be isomorphic to three copies of the Virasoro algebra. The flat limit of the theory is discussed at the level of the action, field equations, solutions and asymptotic symmetry.

Asymptotic symmetries of three-dimensional Chern-Simons gravity for the Maxwell algebra

We study a three-dimensional Chern-Simons gravity theory based on the Maxwell algebra. We find that the boundary dynamics is described by an enlargement and deformation of the $\mathfrak{bms}_3$ algebra with three independent central charges. This symmetry arises from a gravity action invariant under the local Maxwell group and is characterized by presence of Abelian generators which modify the commutation relations of the super-translations in the standard $\mathfrak{bms}_3$ algebra. Our analysis is based on the charge algebra of the theory in the BMS gauge, which includes the known solutions of standard asymptotically flat case. The field content of the theory is different than the one of General Relativity, but it includes all its geometries as particular solutions. In this line, we also study the stationary solutions of the theory in ADM form and we show that the vacuum energy and the vacuum angular momentum of the stationary configuration are influenced by the presence of the gravitational Maxwell field.

Nonminimal couplings, gravitational waves, and torsion in Horndeski's theory

The Horndeski Lagrangian brings together all possible interactions between gravity and a scalar field that yield second-order field equations in four-dimensional spacetime. As originally proposed, it only addresses phenomenology without torsion, which is a non-Riemannian feature of geometry. Since torsion can potentially affect interesting phenomena such as gravitational waves and early Universe inflation, in this paper we allow torsion to exist and propagate within the Horndeski framework. To achieve this goal, we cast the Horndeski Lagrangian in Cartan's first-order formalism, and introduce wave operators designed to act covariantly on p-form fields that carry Lorentz indices. We find that nonminimal couplings and second-order derivatives of the scalar field in the Lagrangian are indeed generic sources of torsion. Metric perturbations couple to the background torsion and new torsional modes appear. These may be detected via gravitational waves but not through Yang-Mills gauge bosons.

Transgression forms as source for topological gravity and Chern-Simons-Higgs theories

Two main gauge invariant off-shell models are studied in this Thesis. I) Poincare-invariant topological gravity in even dimensions is formulated as a transgression field theory whose gauge connections are associated to linear and nonlinear realizations of the Poincare group ISO(d-1,1). The resulting theory is a gauged Wess-Zumino-Witten model whereby the transition functions relating gauge fields belong to the coset ISO(d-1,1)/SO(d-1,1). The supersymmetric extension leads to topological supergravity in two dimensions starting from a transgression field theory for the super-Poincare group in three dimensions. The construction is extended to a three-dimensional Chern-Simons theory of gravity invariant under the Maxwell algebra, where the corresponding Maxwell gauged Wess-Zumino-Witten model is obtained. II) dimensional reduction of Chern-Simons theories with arbitrary gauge group in a formalism based on equivariant principal bundles is considered. For the classical gauge groups the relations between equivariant principal bundles and quiver bundles is clarified, and show that the reduced quiver gauge theories are all generically built on the same universal symmetry breaking pattern. The reduced model is a novel Chern-Simons-Higgs theory consisting of a Chern-Simons term valued in the residual gauge group plus a higher order gauge and diffeomorphism invariant coupling of Higgs fields with the gauge fields. The moduli spaces of solutions provide in some instances geometric representations of certain quiver varieties as moduli spaces of flat invariant connections. In the context of dimensional reductions involving non-compact gauge groups, the reduction of five-dimensional supergravity induce novel couplings between gravity and matter. The resulting model is regarded as to a quiver gauge theory of AdS(3)xU(1) gravity involving a non-minimal coupling to scalar Higgs fermion fields.

Covariant Quiver Gauge Theories

We consider dimensional reduction of gauge theories with arbitrary gauge group in a formalism based on equivariant principal bundles. For the classical gauge groups we clarify the relations between equivariant principal bundles and quiver bundles, and show that the reduced quiver gauge theories are all generically built on the same universal symmetry breaking pattern. The formalism enables the dimensional reduction of Chern-Simons gauge theories in arbitrary odd dimensionalities. The reduced model is a novel Chern-Simons-Higgs theory consisting of a Chern-Simons term valued in the residual gauge group plus a higher order gauge and diffeomorphism invariant coupling of Higgs fields with the gauge fields. We study the moduli spaces of solutions, which in some instances provide geometric representations of certain quiver varieties as moduli spaces of flat invariant connections. As physical applications, we consider dimensional reductions involving non-compact gauge supergroups as a means for systematically inducing novel couplings between gravity and matter. In particular, we reduce Chern-Simons supergravity to a quiver gauge theory of AdS gravity involving a non-minimal coupling to scalar Higgs fermion fields.

Topological gravity and transgression holography

We show that Poincare-invariant topological gravity in even dimensions can be formulated as a transgression field theory in one higher dimension whose gauge connections are associated to linear and nonlinear realizations of the Poincare group ISO(d-1,1). The resulting theory is a gauged WZW model whereby the transition functions relating gauge fields live in the coset ISO(d-1,1)/SO(d-1,1). The coordinate parametrizing the coset space is identified with the scalar field in the adjoint representation of the gauge group of the even-dimensional topological gravity theory. The supersymmetric extension leads to topological supergravity in two dimensions starting from a transgression field theory which is invariant under the supersymmetric extension of the Poincare group in three dimensions. We also apply this construction to a three-dimensional Chern-Simons theory of gravity which is invariant under the Maxwell algebra and obtain the corresponding WZW model.

A generalized action for $\left( 2 + 1 \right)$-dimensional Chern--Simons gravity

We show that the so-called semi-simple extended Poincaré (SSEP) algebra in $D$ dimensions can be obtained from the anti-de~Sitter algebra $\mathfrak{so} \left( D-1,2 \right)$ by means of the $S$-expansion procedure with an appropriate semigroup $S$. A general prescription is given for computing Casimir operators for $S$-expanded algebras, and the method is exemplified for the SSEP algebra. The $S$-expansion method also allows us to extract the corresponding invariant tensor for the SSEP algebra, which is a key ingredient in the construction of a generalized action for Chern--Simons gravity in $2+1$ dimensions.
