Measures of weak non-compactness in spaces of nuclear operators

We show that in the space of nuclear operators from $\ell^q(Λ)$ to $\ell^p(J)$ the two natural ways of measuring weak non-compactness coincide. We also provide explicit formulas for these measures. As a consequence the same is proved for preduals of atomic von Neumann algebras.

Decompositions of preduals of JBW and JBW$^*$ algebras

We prove that the predual of any JBW$^*$-algebra is a complex $1$-Plichko space and the predual of any JBW-algebra is a real $1$-Plichko space. I.e., any such space has a countably $1$-norming Markushevich basis, or, equivalently, a commutative $1$-projectional skeleton. This extends recent results of the authors who proved the same for preduals of von Neumann algebras and their self-adjoint parts. However, the more general setting of Jordan algebras turned to be much more complicated. We use in the proof a set-theoretical method of elementary submodels. As a byproduct we obtain a result on amalgamation of projectional skeletons.

Baire classes of affine vector-valued functions

We investigate Baire classes of strongly affine mappings with values in Fréchet spaces. We show, in particular, that the validity of the vector-valued Mokobodzki's result on affine functions of the first Baire class is related to the approximation property of the range space. We further extend several results known for scalar functions on Choquet simplices or on dual balls of $L_1$-preduals to the vector-valued case. This concerns, in particular, affine classes of strongly affine Baire mappings, the abstract Dirichlet problem and the weak Dirichlet problem for Baire mappings. Some of these results have weaker conclusions than their scalar versions. We also establish an affine version of the Jayne-Rogers selection theorem.

On projectional skeletons in Vašák spaces

We provide an alternative proof of the theorem saying that any Vašák (or, weakly countably determined) Banach space admits a full $1$-projectional skeleton. The proof is done with the use of the method of elementary submodels and is comparably simple as the proof given by W.~Kubiś (2009) in case of weakly compactly generated spaces.

On Markushevich bases in preduals of von Neumann algebras

We prove that the predual of any von Neumann algebra is $1$-Plichko, i.e., it has a countably $1$-norming Markushevich basis. This answers a question of the third author who proved the same for preduals of semifinite von Neumann algebras. As a corollary we obtain an easier proof of a result of U.~Haagerup that the predual of any von Neumann algebra enjoys the separable complementation property. We further prove that the self-adjoint part of the predual is $1$-Plichko as well.

Preserving affine Baire classes by perfect affine maps

Let $φ\colon X\to Y$ be an affine continuous surjection between compact convex sets. Suppose that the canonical copy of the space of real-valued affine continuous functions on $Y$ in the space of real-valued affine continuous functions on $X$ is complemented. We show that if $F$ is a topological vector space, then $f\colon Y\to F$ is of affine Baire class $α$ whenever the composition $f\circφ$ is of affine Baire class $α$. This abstract result is applied to extend known results on affine Baire classes of strongly affine Baire mappings.

Quantification of the Banach-Saks property

We investigate possible quantifications of the Banach-Saks property and the weak Banach-Saks property. We prove quantitative versions of relationships of the Banach-Saks property of a set with norm compactness and weak compactness. We further establish a quantitative version of the characterization of the weak Banach-Saks property of a set using uniform weak convergence and $\ell_1$-spreading models. We also study the case of the unit ball and in this case we prove a dichotomy which is an analogue of the James distortion theorem for $\ell_1$-spreading models.

Note on Bessaga-Klee classification

We collect several variants of the proof of the third case of the Bessaga-Klee relative classification of closed convex bodies in topological vector spaces. We were motivated by the fact that we have not found anywhere in the literature a complete correct proof. In particular, we point out an error in the proof given in the book of C.~Bessaga and A.~Pełczyński (1975). We further provide a simplified version of T.~Dobrowolski's proof of the smooth classification of smooth convex bodies in Banach spaces which works simultaneously in the topological case.

Monotone retractability and retractional skeletons

We prove that a countably compact space is monotonically retractable if and only if it has a full retractional skeleton. In particular, a compact space is monotonically retractable if and only if it is Corson. This gives an answer to a question of R. Rojas-Hern{á}ndez and V. V. Tkachuk. Further, we apply this result to characterize retractional skeleton using a topology on the space of continuous functions, answering thus a question of the first author and a related question of W. Kubiś.

On quantitative Schur and Dunford-Pettis properties

We show that the dual to any subspace of $c_0(Γ)$ has the strongest possible quantitative version of the Schur property. Further, we establish relationship between the quantitative Schur property and quantitative versions of the Dunford-Pettis property. Finally, we apply these results to show, in particular, that any subspace of the space of compact operators on $\ell_p$ ($1<p<\infty$) with Dunford-Pettis property satisfies automatically both its quantitative versions.

Quantitative Dunford-Pettis property

We investigate possible quantifications of the Dunford-Pettis property. We show, in particular, that the Dunford-Pettis property is automatically quantitative in a sense. Further, there are two incomparable mutually dual stronger versions of a quantitative Dunford-Pettis property. We prove that $L^1$ spaces and $C(K)$ spaces posses both of them. We also show that several natural measures of weak non-compactness are equal in $L^1$ spaces.

Optimal approximate fixed point results in locally convex spaces

Let $C$ be a convex subset of a locally convex space. We provide optimal approximate fixed point results for sequentially continuous maps $f\colon C\to\bar{C}$. First we prove that if $f(C)$ is totally bounded, then it has an approximate fixed point net. Next, it is shown that if $C$ is bounded but not totally bounded, then there is a uniformly continuous map $f\colon C\to C$ without approximate fixed point nets. We also exhibit an example of a sequentially continuous map defined on a compact convex set with no approximate fixed point sequence. In contrast, it is observed that every affine (not-necessarily continuous) self-mapping a bounded convex subset of a topological vector space has an approximate fixed point sequence. Moreover, it is constructed a affine sequentially continuous map from a compact convex set into itself without fixed points.

On the approximate fixed point property in abstract spaces

Let $X$ be a Hausdorff topological vector space, $X^*$ its topological dual and $Z$ a subset of $X^*$. In this paper, we establish some results concerning the $σ(X,Z)$-approximate fixed point property for bounded, closed convex subsets $C$ of $X$. Three major situations are studied. First when $Z$ is separable in the strong topology. Second when $X$ is a metrizable locally convex space and $Z=X^*$, and third when $X$ is not necessarily metrizable but admits a metrizable locally convex topology compatible with the duality. Our approach focuses on establishing the Fréchet-Urysohn property for certain sets with regarding the $σ(X,Z)$-topology. The support tools include the Brouwer's fixed point theorem and an analogous version of the classical Rosenthal's $\ell_1$-theorem for $\ell_1$-sequences in metrizable case. The results are novel and generalize previous work obtained by the authors in Banach spaces.

On a difference between quantitative weak sequential completeness and the quantitative Schur property

We study quantitative versions of the Schur property and weak sequential completeness, proceeding thus with investigations started by G. Godefroy, N. Kalton and D. Li and continued by H. Pfitzner and the authors. We show that the Schur property of $\ell_1$ holds quantitatively in the strongest possible way and construct an example of a Banach space which is quantitatively weakly sequentially complete, has the Schur property but fails the quantitative form of the Schur property.

Spaces not containing $\ell_1$ have weak aproximate fixed point property

A nonempty closed convex bounded subset $C$ of a Banach space is said to have the weak approximate fixed point property if for every continuous map $f:C\to C$ there is a sequence $\{x_n\}$ in $C$ such that $x_n-f(x_n)$ converge weakly to 0. We prove in particular that $C$ has this property whenever it contains no sequence equivalent to the standard basis of $\ell_1$. As a byproduct we obtain a characterization of Banach spaces not containing $\ell_1$ in terms of the weak topology.

A quantitative version of James' compactness theorem

We introduce two measures of weak non-compactness $Ja_E$ and $Ja$ that quantify, via distances, the idea of boundary behind James' compactness theorem. These measures tell us, for a bounded subset $C$ of a Banach space $E$ and for given $x^*\in E^*$, how far from $E$ or $C$ one needs to go to find $x^{**}\in \bar{C}^{w^*}\subset E^{**}$ with $x^{**}(x^*)=\sup x^* (C)$. A quantitative version of James' compactness theorem is proved using $Ja_E$ and $Ja$, and in particular it yields the following result: {\it Let $C$ be a closed convex bounded subset of a Banach space $E$ and $r>0$. If there is an element $x_0^{**}$ in $\bar{C}^{w^*}$ whose distance to $C$ is greater than $r$, then there is $x^*\in E^*$ such that each $x^{**}\in\bar{C}^{w^*}$ at which $\sup x^*(C)$ is attained has distance to $E$ greater than $r/2$.} We indeed establish that $Ja_E$ and $Ja$ are equivalent to other measures of weak non-compactness studied in the literature. We also collect particular cases and examples showing when the inequalities between the different measures of weak non-compactness can be equalities and when the inequalities are sharp.
