A frequency-domain analysis of inexact gradient methods

We study robustness properties of some iterative gradient-based methods for strongly convex functions, as well as for the larger class of functions with sector-bounded gradients, under a relative error model. Proofs of the corresponding convergence rates are based on frequency-domain criteria for the stability of nonlinear systems. Applications are given to inexact versions of gradient descent and the Triple Momentum Method. To further emphasize the usefulness of frequency-domain methods, we derive improved analytic bounds for the convergence rate of Nesterov's accelerated method (in the exact setting) on strongly convex functions.

Frequency criteria for exponential stability

We discuss some frequency-domain criteria for the exponential stability of nonlinear feedback systems based on dissipativity theory. Applications are given to convergence rates for certain perturbations of the damped harmonic oscillator.

Propagation of singularities on AdS spacetimes for general boundary conditions and the holographic Hadamard condition

We consider the Klein-Gordon equation on asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes subject to Neumann or Robin (or Dirichlet) boundary conditions, and prove propagation of singularities along generalized broken bicharacteristics. The result is formulated in terms of conormal regularity relative to a twisted Sobolev space. We use this to show the uniqueness, modulo regularising terms, of parametrices with prescribed b-wavefront set. Furthermore, in the context of quantum fields, we show a similar result for two-point functions satisfying a holographic Hadamard condition on the b-wavefront set.

Resonance-free regions for diffractive trapping by conormal potentials

We consider the Schr\"odinger operator \[ P=h^2 \Delta_g + V \] on $\mathbb{R}^n$ equipped with a metric $g$ that is Euclidean outside a compact set. The real-valued potential $V$ is assumed to be compactly supported and smooth except at conormal singularities of order $-1-\alpha$ along a compact hypersurface $Y.$ For $\alpha>2$ (or even $\alpha>1$ if the classical flow is unique), we show that if $E_0$ is a non-trapping energy for the classical flow, then the operator $P$ has no resonances in a region \[ [E_0 - \delta, E_0 + \delta] - i[0,\nu_0 h \log(1/h)]. \] The constant $\nu_0$ is explicit in terms of $\alpha$ and dynamical quantities. We also show that the size of this resonance-free region is optimal for the class of piecewise-smooth potentials on the line.

Semiclassical diffraction by conormal potential singularities

We establish propagation of singularities for the semiclassical Schr\"odinger equation, where the potential is conormal to a hypersurface. We show that semiclassical wavefront set propagates along generalized broken bicharacteristics, hence reflection of singularities may occur along trajectories reaching the hypersurface transversely. The reflected wavefront set is weaker, however, by a power of $h$ that depends on the regularity of the potential. We also show that for sufficiently regular potentials, wavefront set may not stick to the hypersurface, but rather detaches from it at points of tangency to travel along ordinary bicharacteristics.

Refined Weyl law for homogeneous perturbations of the harmonic oscillator

Let $H$ denote the harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian on $\mathbb{R}^d,$ perturbed by an isotropic pseudodifferential operator of order $1.$ We consider the Schr\"odinger propagator $U(t)=e^{-itH},$ and find that while $\operatorname{singsupp} \operatorname{Tr} U(t) \subset 2 \pi \mathbb{Z}$ as in the unperturbed case, there exists a large class of perturbations in dimension $d \geq 2$ for which the singularities of $\operatorname{Tr} U(t)$ at nonzero multiples of $2 \pi$ are weaker than the singularity at $t=0$. The remainder term in the Weyl law is of order $o(\lambda^{d-1})$, improving in these cases the $O(\lambda^{d-1})$ remainder previously established by Helffer--Robert.

Resolvent estimates for spacetimes bounded by Killing horizons

We show that the resolvent grows at most exponentially with frequency for the wave equation on a class of stationary spacetimes which are bounded by non-degenerate Killing horizons, without any assumptions on the trapped set. Correspondingly, there exists an exponentially small resonance-free region, and solutions of the Cauchy problem exhibit logarithmic energy decay.

The null-geodesic flow near horizons

This note describes the behavior of null-geodesics near nondegenerate Killing horizons in language amenable to the application of a general framework, due to Vasy and Hintz, for the analysis of both linear and nonlinear wave equations. Throughout, the viewpoint of Melrose's b-geometry on a suitable compactification of spacetime at future infinity is adopted.

Existence of quasinormal modes for Kerr-AdS black holes

This paper establishes the existence of quasinormal frequencies converging exponentially to the real axis for the Klein--Gordon equation on a Kerr-AdS spacetime when Dirichlet boundary conditions are imposed at the conformal boundary. The proof is adapted from results in Euclidean scattering about the existence of scattering poles generated by time-periodic approximate solutions to the wave equation.

Elliptic boundary value problems for Bessel operators, with applications to anti-de Sitter spacetimes

This paper considers boundary value problems for a class of singular elliptic operators which appear naturally in the study of asymptotically anti-de Sitter (aAdS) spacetimes. These problems involve a singular Bessel operator acting in the normal direction. After formulating a Lopatinskii condition, elliptic estimates are established for functions supported near the boundary. The Fredholm property follows from additional hypotheses in the interior. This paper provides a rigorous framework for mode analysis on aAdS spacetimes for a wide range of boundary conditions considered in the physics literature. Completeness of eigenfunctions for some Bessel operator pencils is shown.

Effects of confinement for single-well potentials

We study bound states generated by a unique potential minimum in the situation where the system is strongly confined to a bounded region containing the minimum (by imposing Dirichlet boundary conditions). In this case the eigenvalues of the confined system differ from those of the unconfined system by an exponentially small quantity in the semiclassical limit. An asymptotic expansion for this shift is established. The formulas are evaluated explicitly for the harmonic oscillator and an application to the Coulomb potential at a fixed angular momentum is given.

A global definition of quasinormal modes for Kerr-AdS Black Holes

The quasinormal frequencies of massive scalar fields on Kerr-AdS black holes are identified with poles of a certain meromorphic family of operators, once boundary conditions are specified at the conformal boundary. Consequently, the quasinormal frequencies form a discrete subset of the complex plane and the corresponding poles are of finite rank. This result holds for a broad class of elliptic boundary conditions, with no restrictions on the rotation speed of the black hole.

From quasimodes to resonances: exponentially decaying perturbations

We consider self-adjoint operators of black-box type which are exponentially close to the free Laplacian near infinity, and prove an exponential bound for the resolvent in a strip away from resonances. Here the resonances are defined as poles of the meromorphic continuation of the resolvent between appropriate exponentially weighted spaces. We then use a local version of the maximum principle to prove that any cluster of real quasimodes generates at least as many resonances, with multiplicity, rapidly converging to the quasimodes.

Quasinormal modes for Schwarzschild-AdS black holes: exponential convergence to the real axis

We study quasinormal modes for massive scalar fields in Schwarzschild-anti-de Sitter black holes. When the mass-squared is above the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound we show that for large angular momenta, $\ell$, there exist quasinormal modes with imaginary parts of size $\exp(-\ell/C)$. We provide an asymptotic expansion for the real parts of the modes closest to the real axis and identify the vanishing of certain coefficients depending on the dimension.
