Ionic and electronic properties of the topological insulator Bi$_2$Te$_2$Se investigated using $β$-detected nuclear magnetic relaxation and resonance of $^8$Li

We report measurements on the high temperature ionic and low temperature electronic properties of the 3D topological insulator Bi$_2$Te$_2$Se using ion-implanted $^8$Li $β$-detected nuclear magnetic relaxation and resonance. With implantation energies in the range 5-28 keV, the probes penetrate beyond the expected range of the topological surface state, but are still within 250 nm of the surface. At temperatures above ~150 K, spin-lattice relaxation measurements reveal isolated $^8$Li$^{+}$ diffusion with an activation energy $E_{A} = 0.185(8)$ eV and attempt frequency $τ_{0}^{-1} = 8(3) \times 10^{11}$ s$^{-1}$ for atomic site-to-site hopping. At lower temperature, we find a linear Korringa-like relaxation mechanism with a field dependent slope and intercept, which is accompanied by an anomalous field dependence to the resonance shift. We suggest that these may be related to a strong contribution from orbital currents or the magnetic freezeout of charge carriers in this heavily compensated semiconductor, but that conventional theories are unable to account for the extent of the field dependence. Conventional NMR of the stable host nuclei may help elucidate their origin.

Dynamic Spin Fluctuations at $T\rightarrow 0$ in a Spin-1/2 Ferromagnetic Kagome Lattice

We report magnetization, electron spin resonance (ESR), and muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements on single crystals of the $S=1/2$ (Cu$% ^{+2}$) kagomé compound Cu(1,3-benzendicarboxylate). The $μ$SR is carried to temperatures as low as 45 mK. The spin Hamiltonian parameters are determined from the analysis of the magnetization and ESR data. We find that this compound has anisotropic ferromagnetic interactions. Nevertheless, no spin freezing is observed even at temperatures two orders of magnitude lower than the coupling constants. In light of this finding, the relation between persistent spin dynamics and spin liquid are reexamined.

$β$ NMR study of Isolated $^8$Li in the enhanced paramagnet Platinum

We report β detected nuclear magnetic resonance (βNMR) measurements of 8Li+ implanted into high purity Pt. The frequency of the 8Li βNMR resonance and the spin-lattice relaxation rates 1/T1 were measured at temperatures ranging from 3 to 300 K. Remarkably, both the spin-lattice relaxation rate and the Knight shift K depend linearly on temperature T although the bulk susceptibility does not. K is found to scale with the Curie-Weiss dependence of the Pt susceptibility extrapolated to low temperatures. This is attributed to a defect response of the enhanced paramagnetism of Pt, i.e. the presence of the interstitial Li+ locally relieves the tendency for the Curie-Weiss susceptibility to saturate at low T . We propose that the low temperature saturation in \c{hi} of Pt may be related to an interband coupling between the s and d bands that is disrupted locally by the presence of the Li+.

The Herbertsmithite Hamiltonian: $μ$SR measurements on single crystals

We present transverse field muon spin rotation/relaxation measurements on single crystals of the spin-1/2 kagome antiferromagnet Herbertsmithite. We find that the spins are more easily polarized when the field is perpendicular to the kagome plane. We demonstrate that the difference in magnetization between the different directions cannot be accounted for by Dzyaloshinksii-Moriya type interactions alone, and that anisotropic axial interaction is present.

Origin of magnetic freezing in the pyrochlore Y2Mo2O7

We investigated the nature of the spin glass-like phase transition in the geometrically frustrated pyrochlore lattices Y$_{2}$Mo$_{2}$O$_{7}$ using the local probes nuclear and muon magnetic resonances, and the field-dependent long range probes x-ray and neutron scattering. The long range probes indicated that Y$_{2}$Mo$_{2}$O$_{7}$ does not undergo any global symmetry changes, even in a field of $6$~T. In contrast, the local signal indicates a lattice distortion close to the critical temperature. The nuclei show at least two inequivalent Y sites, and the muons show sub-linear line broadening as a function of moment size, over a wide temperature range. The conclusion from all the measurements is that even in high field, the distortion of Y$_{2}$Mo$_{2}$O$%_{7}$ takes place within the unit-cell, while its global cubic symmetry is preserved. Moreover, the muon result clearly indicates the presence of magneto-elastic coupling.

The magnetic structure of the $zigzag$ chain family Na$_{x}$Ca$_{1-x}$V$_2$O$_4$ determined by muon-spin rotation

We present muon-spin rotation measurements on polycrystalline samples of the complete family of the antiferromagnetic (AF) $zigzag$ chain compounds, Na$_x$Ca$_{1-x}$V$_2$O$_4$. In this family, we explore the magnetic properties from the metallic NaV$_2$O$_4$ to the insulating CaV$_2$O$_4$. We find a critical $x_c(\sim0.833)$ which separates the low and high Na-concentration dependent transition temperature and its magnetic ground state. In the $x x_c$ compounds, multiple sub-phases appear with temperature and $x$. Based on the muon data obtained in zero external magnetic field, a careful dipolar field simulation was able to reproduce the muon behavior and indicates a modulated helical incommensurate spin structure of the metallic AF phase. The incommensurate modulation period obtained by the simulation agrees with that determined by neutron diffraction.

The magnetic phase of the perovskite CaCrO$_3$ studied with $μ^{+}$SR

We investigated the magnetic phase of the perovskite CaCrO$_3$ by using the muon spin relaxation technique accompanied by susceptibility measurements. A thermal hysteresis loop is identified with a width of about 1 K at the transition temperature. Within the time scale of the muon lifetime, a static antiferromagnetic order is revealed with distinct multiple internal fields which are experienced in the muon interstitial sites below the phase-transition temperature, $T_N=90 K$. Above $T_N$, lattice deformations are indicated by transverse-field muon-spin rotation and relaxation suggesting a magneto-elastic mechanism.

Muon-Spin Spectroscopy of the organometallic spin 1/2 kagome-lattice compound Cu(1,3-benzenedicarboxylate)

Using muon spin resonance we examine the organometallic hybrid compound Cu(1,3-benzenedicarboxylate) [Cu(1,3-bdc)], which has structurally perfect spin 1/2 copper kagome planes separated by pure organic linkers. This compound has antiferromagnetic interactions with Curie-Weiss temperature of -33 K. We found slowing down of spin fluctuations starting at T=1.8 K, and that the state at T->0 is quasi-static with no long-range order and extremely slow spin fluctuations at a rate of 3.6 1/usec. This indicates that Cu(1,3-bdc) behaves as expected from a kagome magnet and could serve as a model kagome compound.

The symmetry of the spin Hamiltonian in herbertsmithite, a spin-1/2 kagomé lattice

We present magnetization measurements on oriented powder of ZnCu$_{3}$(OH)$_{6}$Cl$_{2}$ along and perpendicular to the orienting field. We find a dramatic difference in the magnetization between the two directions. It is biggest at low measurement fields $H$ or high temperatures. We show that the difference at high temperatures must emerge from Ising-like exchange anisotropy. This allows us to explain muon spin rotation data at $T\to 0$ in terms of an exotic ferromagnetic ground state.

Ground state and excitation properties of the quantum kagomé system ZnCu$_{3}$(OH)$_{6}$Cl$_{2}$ investigated by local probes

We characterize the ground state and excitation spectrum of the $S=1/2$, nominally pure and perfect kagomé system ZnCu$_{3}$(OH)$_{6}$Cl$_{2}$ using the following measurements: magnetization, muon spin rotation frequency shift $K$, transverse relaxation time $T_{2}^{\ast}$, and zero field relaxation, and Cl nuclear spin-lattice relaxation $T_{1}$. We found no sign of singlet formation, no long range order or spin freezing, and no sign of spin-Peierls transition even at temperatures as low as 60 mK. The density of states has $E^{1/4}$ energy dependence with a negligible gap to excitation.

Lack of static lattice distortion in $Tb_2 Ti_2 O_7$

We investigated the possibility of temperature dependent lattice distortions in the pyrochlore compound Tb$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$ by measuring the internal magnetic field distribution, using muon spin resonance, and comparing it to the susceptibility. The measurements are done at temperatures as low as 70 mK and external fields up to 6 kG. We find that the evolution of the width of the field distribution can be explained by spin susceptibility only, thus ruling out a temperature dependent hyperfine coupling. We conclude that lattice deformations are absent in Tb$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$.

A quest for frustration driven distortion in Y2Mo2O7

We investigated the nature of the freezing in the geometrically frustrated Heisenberg spin-glass Y2Mo2O7 by measuring the temperature dependence of the static internal magnetic field distribution above the spin-glass temperature, Tg, using the muSR technique. The evolution of the field distribution cannot be explained by changes in the spin susceptibility alone and suggests a lattice deformation. This possibility is addressed by numerical simulations of the Heisenberg Hamiltonian with magneto-elastic coupling at T>0.
