Bailout Embeddings, Targeting of KAM Orbits, and the Control of Hamiltonian Chaos

We present a novel technique, which we term bailout embedding, that can be used to target orbits having particular properties out of all orbits in a flow or map. We explicitly construct a bailout embedding for Hamiltonian systems so as to target KAM orbits. We show how the bailout dynamics is able to lock onto extremely small KAM islands in an ergodic sea.

Analytical and Numerical Studies of Noise-induced Synchronization of Chaotic Systems

We study the effect that the injection of a common source of noise has on the trajectories of chaotic systems, addressing some contradictory results present in the literature. We present particular examples of 1-d maps and the Lorenz system, both in the chaotic region, and give numerical evidence showing that the addition of a common noise to different trajectories, which start from different initial conditions, leads eventually to their perfect synchronization. When synchronization occurs, the largest Lyapunov exponent becomes negative. For a simple map we are able to show this phenomenon analytically. Finally, we analyze the structural stability of the phenomenon.

The Complex Ginzburg-Landau Equation in the Presence of Walls and Corners

We investigate the influence of walls and corners (with Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions) in the evolution of twodimensional autooscillating fields described by the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation. Analytical solutions are found, and arguments provided, to show that Dirichlet walls introduce strong selection mechanisms for the wave pattern. Corners between walls provide additional synchronization mechanisms and associated selection criteria. The numerical results fit well with the theoretical predictions in the parameter range studied.

Quasiperiodic Patterns in Boundary-Modulated Excitable Waves

We investigate the impact of the domain shape on wave propagation in excitable media. Channelled domains with sinusoidal boundaries are considered. Trains of fronts generated periodically at an extreme of the channel are found to adopt a quasiperiodic spatial configuration stroboscopically frozen in time. The phenomenon is studied in a model for the photo-sensitive Belousov-Zabotinsky reaction, but we give a theoretical derivation of the spatial return maps prescribing the height and position of the successive fronts that is valid for arbitrary excitable reaction-diffusion systems.

Population dynamics advected by chaotic flows: a discrete-time map approach

A discrete-time model of reacting evolving fields, transported by a bidimensional chaotic fluid flow, is studied. Our approach is based on the use of a Lagrangian scheme where {\it fluid particles} are advected by a $2d$ symplectic map possibly yielding Lagrangian chaos. Each {\it fluid particle} carries concentrations of active substances which evolve according to its own reaction dynamics. This evolution is also modeled in terms of maps. Motivated by the question, of relevance in marine ecology, of how a localized distribution of nutrients or preys affects the spatial structure of predators transported by a fluid flow, we study a specific model in which the population dynamics is given by a logistic map with space-dependent coefficient, and advection is given by the standard map. Fractal and random patterns in the Eulerian spatial concentration of predators are obtained under different conditions. Exploiting the analogies of this coupled-map (advection plus reaction) system with a random map, some features of these patterns are discussed.

Nonlinear Dynamics of the Perceived Pitch of Complex Sounds

We apply results from nonlinear dynamics to an old problem in acoustical physics: the mechanism of the perception of the pitch of sounds, especially the sounds known as complex tones that are important for music and speech intelligibility.

Average Patterns of Spatiotemporal Chaos: A Boundary Effect

Chaotic pattern dynamics in many experimental systems show structured time averages. We suggest that simple universal boundary effects underly this phenomenon and exemplify them with the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation in a finite domain. As in the experiments, averaged patterns in the equation recover global symmetries locally broken in the chaotic field. Plateus in the average pattern wavenumber as a function of the system size are observed and studied and the different behaviors at the central and boundary regions are discussed. Finally, the structure strenght of average patterns is investigated as a function of system size.

Frozen spatial chaos induced by boundaries

We show that rather simple but non-trivial boundary conditions could induce the appearance of spatial chaos (that is stationary, stable, but spatially disordered configurations) in extended dynamical systems with very simple dynamics. We exemplify the phenomenon with a nonlinear reaction-diffusion equation in a two-dimensional undulated domain. Concepts from the theory of dynamical systems, and a transverse-single-mode approximation are used to describe the spatially chaotic structures.

Universality in Three-Frequency Resonances

We investigate the hierarchical structure of three-frequency resonances in nonlinear dynamical systems with three interacting frequencies. We hypothesize an ordering of these resonances based on a generalization of the Farey tree organization from two frequencies to three. In experiments and numerical simulations we demonstrate that our hypothesis describes the hierarchies of three-frequency resonances in representative dynamical systems. We conjecture that this organization may be universal across a large class of three-frequency systems.

Dynamics of Elastic Excitable Media

The Burridge-Knopoff model of earthquake faults with viscous friction is equivalent to a van der Pol-FitzHugh-Nagumo model for excitable media with elastic coupling. The lubricated creep-slip friction law we use in the Burridge-Knopoff model describes the frictional sliding dynamics of a range of real materials. Low-dimensional structures including synchronized oscillations and propagating fronts are dominant, in agreement with the results of laboratory friction experiments. Here we explore the dynamics of fronts in elastic excitable media.

Boundary Effects in The Complex Ginzburg-Landau Equation

The effect of a finite geometry on the two-dimensional complex Ginzburg-Landau equation is addressed. Boundary effects induce the formation of novel states. For example target like-solutions appear as robust solutions under Dirichlet boundary conditions. Synchronization of plane waves emitted by boundaries, entrainment by corner emission, and anchoring of defects by shock lines are also reported.

Burridge-Knopoff Models as Elastic Excitable Media

We construct a model of an excitable medium with elastic rather than the usual diffusive coupling. We explore the dynamics of elastic excitable media, which we find to be dominated by low dimensional structures, including global oscillations, period-doubled pacemakers, and propagating fronts. We suggest that examples of elastic excitable media are to be found in such diverse physical systems as Burridge-Knopoff models of frictional sliding, electronic transmission lines, and active optical waveguides.

Global Diffusion in a Realistic Three-Dimensional Time-Dependent Nonturbulent Fluid Flow

We introduce and study the first model of an experimentally realizable three-dimensional time-dependent nonturbulent fluid flow to display the phenomenon of global diffusion of passive-scalar particles at arbitrarily small values of the nonintegrable perturbation. This type of chaotic advection, termed {\it resonance-induced diffusion\/}, is generic for a large class of flows.

Chaotic advection in three-dimensional unsteady incompressible laminar flow

We discuss chaotic advection in three-dimensional unsteady incompressible laminar flow, and analyse in detail the most important novel advection phenomenon in these flows; the global dispersion of passive scalars in flows with two slow and one fast velocity components. We make a comprehensive study of the first model of an experimentally realizable flow to exhibit this {\it resonance-induced\/} dispersion: biaxial unsteady spherical Couette flow is a three-dimensional incompressible laminar flow with periodic time dependence derived analytically from the Navier--Stokes equations in the low-Reynolds-number limit.
