Non-Equilibrium Quantum Dynamics of Ultra-Cold Atomic Mixtures: the Multi-Layer Multi-Configuration Time-Dependent Hartree Method for Bosons

We develop and apply the multi-layer multi-configuration time-dependent Hartree method for bosons, which represents an ab initio method for investigating the non-equilibrium quantum dynamics of multi-species bosonic systems. Its multi-layer feature allows for tailoring the wave function ansatz in order to describe intra- and inter-species correlations accurately and efficiently. To demonstrate the beneficial scaling and the efficiency of the method, we explore the correlated tunneling dynamics of two species with repulsive intra- and inter-species interactions, to which a third species with vanishing intra-species interaction is weakly coupled. The population imbalances of the first two species can feature a temporal equilibration and their time-evolution significantly depends on the coupling to the third species. Bosons of the first and of the second species exhibit a bunching tendency, whose strength can be influenced by their coupling to the third species.

Correlated dynamics of the motion of proton-hole wave-packets in a photoionized water cluster

We explore the correlated dynamics of an electron-hole and a proton after ionization of a protonated water cluster by extreme ultra-violet (XUV) light. An ultrafast decay mechanism is found in which the proton--hole dynamics after the ionization are driven by electrostatic repulsion and involve a strong coupling between the nuclear and electronic degrees of freedom. We describe the system by a quantum-dynamical approach and show that non-adiabatic effects are a key element of the mechanism by which electron and proton repel each other and become localized at opposite sides of the cluster. Based on the generality of the decay mechanism, similar effects may be expected for other ionized systems featuring hydrogen bonds.

Imaging electronic quantum motion with light

Imaging the quantum motion of electrons not only in real-time, but also in real-space is essential to understand for example bond breaking and formation in molecules, and charge migration in peptides and biological systems. Time-resolved imaging interrogates the unfolding electronic motion in such systems. We find that scattering patterns, obtained by X-ray time-resolved imaging from an electronic wavepacket, encode spatial and temporal correlations that deviate substantially from the common notion of the instantaneous electronic density as the key quantity being probed. Surprisingly, the patterns provide an unusually visual manifestation of the quantum nature of light. This quantum nature becomes central only for non-stationary electronic states and has profound consequences for time-resolved imaging.

Multilayer multi-configuration time-dependent Hartree method: implementation and applications to a Henon-Heiles Hamiltonian and to pyrazine

The multilayer multiconfiguration time-dependent Hartree (ML-MCTDH) method is discussed and a fully general implementation for any number of layers based on the recursive ML-MCTDH algorithm given by Manthe [J. Chem. Phys. {\bf 128}, 164116 (2008)] is presented. The method is applied first to a generalized Henon-Heiles (HH) Hamiltonian. For 6D HH the overhead of ML-MCTDH makes the method slower than MCTDH, but for 18D HH ML-MCTDH starts to be competitive. We report as well 1458D simulations of the HH Hamiltonian using a seven layer scheme. The photoabsorption spectrum of pyrazine computed with the 24D Hamiltonian of Raab {\em et. al.} [J. Chem. Phys. {\bf 110}, 936 (1999)] provides a realistic molecular test case for the method. Quick and small ML-MCTDH calculations needing a fraction of the time and resources of reference MCTDH calculations provide already spectra with all the correct features. Accepting slightly larger deviations, the calculation can be accelerated to take only 7 minutes. When pushing the method towards convergence, results of similar quality than the best available MCTDH benchmark, which is based on a wavepacket with $4.6\times 10^7$ time-dependent coefficients, are obtained with a much more compact wavefunction consisting of only $4.5\times 10^5$ coefficients and requiring a shorter computation time.

Dynamics and Infrared Spectroscopy of the Protonated Water Dimer

The dynamics and infrared absorption spectrum of the protonated water dimer are reported by full quantum simulation. Strong couplings between the spectroscopically active proton-transfer motion and low-frequency, large-amplitude torsional modes are clearly identified and their role in the cluster dynamics is explained. These couplings are responsible for the characteristic doublet-peak around 1000 cm-1, which was not understood and subject of debate. This spectral feature is reproduced, assigned and explained.

Full dimensional (15D) quantum-dynamical simulation of the protonated water-dimer I: Hamiltonian setup and analysis of the ground vibrational state

Quantum-dynamical full-dimensional (15D) calculations are reported for the protonated water dimer (H5O2+) using the multiconfiguration time-dependent Hartree (MCTDH) method. The dynamics is described by curvilinear coordinates. The expression of the kinetic energy operator in this set of coordinates is given and its derivation, following the polyspherical method, is discussed. The PES employed is that of Huang et al. [JCP, 122, 044308, (2005)]. A scheme for the representation of the potential energy surface (PES) is discussed which is based on a high dimensional model representation scheme (cut-HDMR), but modified to take advantage of the mode-combination representation of the vibrational wavefunction used in MCTDH. The convergence of the PES expansion used is quantified and evidence is provided that it correctly reproduces the reference PES at least for the range of energies of interest. The reported zero point energy of the system is converged with respect to the MCTDH expansion and in excellent agreement (16.7 cm-1 below) with the diffusion Monte Carlo result on the PES of Huang et al. The highly fluxional nature of the cation is accounted for through use of curvilinear coordinates. The system is found to interconvert between equivalent minima through wagging and internal rotation motions already when in the ground vibrational-state, i.e., T=0. It is shown that a converged quantum-dynamical description of such a flexible, multi-minima system is possible.

Full dimensional (15D) quantum-dynamical simulation of the protonated water-dimer II: infrared spectrum and vibrational dynamics

The infrared absorption spectrum of the protonated water dimer (H5O2+) is simulated in full dimensionality (15D) in the spectral range 0-4000 cm-1. The calculations are performed using the Multiconfiguration Time-Dependent Hartree (MCTDH) method for propagation of wavepackets. All the fundamentals and several overtones of the vibrational motion are computed. The spectrum of H5O2+ is shaped to a large extent by couplings of the proton-transfer motion to large amplitude fluxional motions of the water molecules, water bending and water-water stretch motions. These couplings are identified and discussed, and the corresponding spectral lines assigned. The large couplings featured by H5O2+ do not hinder, however, to describe the coupled vibrational motion by well defined simple types of vibration (stretching, bending, etc.) based on well defined modes of vibration, in terms of which the spectral lines are assigned. Comparison of our results to recent experiments and calculations on the system is given. The reported MCTDH IR-spectrum is in very good agreement to the recently measured spectrum by Hammer et al. [JCP, 122, 244301, (2005)].
