Fiber-Optic Communication and Torsion Sensing via a BB84-Inspired Polarization Scheme

Polarization-encoded optical-fiber links provide a useful platform for investigating the coexistence of communication and sensing functions in a shared optical channel. In this work, a classical analog of the BB84 polarization-encoding scheme was implemented over a bend-insensitive fiber link to evaluate how temperature, axial strain, and torsion affect the transmitted state of polarization and the recovery of a binary key. Temperature variations from 24 °C to 35 °C and axial strain up to 2 mε produced only minor polarization-state variations and did not affect key recovery. In contrast, fiber torsion induced a pronounced retarder-like evolution of the state of polarization, reducing the detector-intensity contrast used for bit discrimination and degrading key recovery. For intermediate torsion angles, the erasure rate reached 50%. The polarization state tended to recover for rotations close to Δθ = 180°, consistent with the oscillatory response observed on the Poincaré sphere. These results identify torsion as the dominant impairment in the tested polarization-encoded fiber link and demonstrate its potential use as a sensing mechanism in integrated communication-and-sensing architectures.

Environmental Sensitivity of Fabry-Perot Microcavities Induced By Layered Graphene-Dielectric Hybrid Coatings

We propose a fiber-based environmental sensor that exploits the reflection phase shift tunability provided by the use of layered coatings composed of dielectric slabs spaced by conducting membranes. A transfer matrix study is done in a simplified theoretical model, for which an enhanced sensitivity of the reflection interference pattern to the output medium is demonstrated, in the typical refractive index range of liquid media. An experimental configuration using a cascaded Fabry-Perot microcavity coated by a graphene oxide/polyethylenimine (GO/PEI) multilayered structure is demonstrated. Its cost effective chemical production method makes graphene oxide-based hybrid coatings excellent candidates for future real-life sensing devices.

Optical Harmonic Vernier Effect: A New Tool for High Performance Interferometric Fibre Sensors

The optical Vernier effect magnifies the sensing capabilities of an interferometer, allowing for unprecedented sensitivities and resolutions to be achieved. Just like a caliper uses two different scales to achieve higher resolution measurements, the optical Vernier effect is based on the overlap in the responses of two interferometers with slightly detuned interference signals. Here, we present a novel approach in detail, which introduces optical harmonics to the Vernier effect through Fabry-Perot interferometers, where the two interferometers can have very different frequencies in the interferometric pattern. We demonstrate not only a considerable enhancement compared to current methods, but also better control of the sensitivity magnification factor, which scales up with the order of the harmonics, allowing us to surpass the limits of the conventional Vernier effect as used today. In addition, this novel concept opens also new ways of dimensioning the sensing structures, together with improved fabrication tolerances.

A simplification design of the fiber cavity ring-down technique

This paper presents a simplification design for the fiber cavity ring-down technique. The new configuration is no longer in ring cavity and is converted to a linear cavity. The proposed linear cavity is created with a single fibre coupler of 99:1 and two thin-film mirrors located at the end of the fibre arms. This configuration can be interrogated in reflection or in transmission (whether if two fibre couplers are used in conventional configuration), however the reflection interrogation presents better resolution when compared signal-to-noise ratio in the decay time measurement. The mirrors can be also replaced by fibre Bragg gratings and fibre loop mirrors. One of the main advantages of this simplification is its use for remote sensing. However, it is necessary to include amplification in the cavity to eliminate fiber length losses. This configuration allows using any intensity-based optical fibre sensor in the literature with twice improvement in the sensitivity and can be easily adapted to a commercial system. A proof-of-concept for strain sensing is demonstrated. This simplification opens new paths in physical, chemical or biological parameters using this simple fibre configuration.
