Entanglement entropy in quantum black holes

We discuss the entanglement entropy for a massive Klein-Gordon field in two Schwarzschild-like quantum black hole spacetimes, also including a nonminimal coupling term with the background scalar curvature. To compute the entanglement entropy, we start from the standard spherical shell discretisation procedure, tracing over the degrees of freedom residing inside an imaginary surface. We estimate the free parameters for such quantum metrics through a simple physical argument based on Heisenberg uncertainty principle, along with alternative proposals as asymptotic safety, trace anomaly, and graviton corpuscular scaling. Our findings reveal a significant decrease in entropy compared to the area law near the origin for the quantum metrics. In both scenarios, the entanglement entropy converges to the expected area law sufficiently far from the origin. We then compare these results to the entropy scaling in regular Hayward and corrected-Hayward spacetimes to highlight the main differences with such regular approaches.

Double polytropic cosmic acceleration from the Murnaghan equation of state

We consider a double polytropic cosmological fluid and demonstrate that, when one constituent resembles a bare cosmological constant while the other emulates a generalized Chaplygin gas, a good description of the Universe's large-scale dynamics is obtained. In particular, our double polytropic reduces to the Murnaghan equation of state, whose applications are already well established in solid state physics and classical thermodynamics. Intriguingly, our model approximates the conventional $Λ$CDM paradigm while reproducing the collective effects of logotropic and generalized Chaplygin fluids across different regimes. To check the goodness of our fluid description, we analyze first order density perturbations, refining our model through various orders of approximation, utilizing $σ_8$ data alongside other cosmological data sets. Encouraging results suggest that our model, based on the Murnaghan equation of state, outperforms the standard cosmological background within specific approximate regimes and, on the whole, surpasses the standard phenomenological reconstruction of dark energy.

Cosmological transition epoch from gamma-ray burst correlations

The redshift $z_t$ and the jerk parameter $j_t$ of the transition epoch are constrained by using two model-independent approaches involving the direct expansion of the Hubble rate and the expansion of the deceleration parameter around $z=z_t$. To extend our analysis to high-redshifts, we employ the \emph{Amati}, \emph{Combo}, \emph{Yonetoku} and \emph{Dainotti} gamma-ray burst correlations. The \textit{circularity problem} is prevented by calibrating these correlations through the Bézier interpolation of the updated observational Hubble data. Each gamma-ray burst data set is jointly fit with type Ia supernovae and baryonic acoustic oscillations through a Monte Carlo analysis, based on the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm, to obtain $z_t$, $j_t$ and the correlation parameters. The overall results are compatible with the concordance model with some exceptions. We also focus on the behaviors of the dark energy, verifying its compatibility with a cosmological constant, and the matter density $Ω_m$ and compare them with the expectations of the concordance paradigm.

Motion of test particles in quasi anti-de Sitter regular black holes

We explore the characteristics of two novel regular spacetimes that exhibit a non-zero vacuum energy term, under the form of a (quasi) anti-de Sitter phase. Specifically, the first metric is spherical, while the second, derived by applying the generalized Newman-Janis algorithm to the first, is axisymmetric. We show that the equations of state of the effective fluids associated with the two metrics asymptotically tend to negative values, resembling quintessence. In addition, we study test particle motions, illustrating the main discrepancies among our models and more conventional metrics exhibiting non-vanishing anti-de Sitter phase.

Geometric aspects of mixed quantum states inside the Bloch sphere

When studying the geometry of quantum states, it is acknowledged that mixed states can be distinguished by infinitely many metrics. Unfortunately, this freedom causes metric-dependent interpretations of physically significant geometric quantities such as complexity and volume of quantum states. In this paper, we present an insightful discussion on the differences between the Bures and the Sjöqvist metrics inside a Bloch sphere. First, we begin with a formal comparative analysis between the two metrics by critically discussing three alternative interpretations for each metric. Second, we illustrate explicitly the distinct behaviors of the geodesic paths on each one of the two metric manifolds. Third, we compare the finite distances between an initial and final mixed state when calculated with the two metrics. Interestingly, in analogy to what happens when studying topological aspects of real Euclidean spaces equipped with distinct metric functions (for instance, the usual Euclidean metric and the taxicab metric), we observe that the relative ranking based on the concept of finite distance among mixed quantum states is not preserved when comparing distances determined with the Bures and the Sjöqvist metrics. Finally, we conclude with a brief discussion on the consequences of this violation of a metric-based relative ranking on the concept of complexity and volume of mixed quantum states.

Production of ultralight dark matter from inflationary spectator fields

We investigate inflationary particle production associated with a spectator ultralight scalar field, which has been recently proposed as a plausible dark matter candidate. In this framework, we select the Starobinsky potential to drive the inflationary epoch, also discussing the case of a nonminimally coupled inflaton field fueled by a quartic symmetry-breaking potential. We focus on particle production arising from spacetime perturbations, which are induced by inflaton fluctuations during the quasi-de Sitter stage of inflation. In particular, we construct the first order Lagrangian describing interaction between inhomogeneities and the spectator field, quantifying superhorizon particle production during slow-roll. We then compare this mechanism with gravitational particle production associated with an instantaneous transition from inflation to the radiation dominated era. We show that the amount of particles obtained from perturbations is typically non-negligible and it is significantly enhanced on super-Hubble scales by the nonadiabatic inflationary expansion. Possible implications for primordial entanglement generation are also debated.

Superhorizon entanglement from inflationary particle production

We investigate entanglement generation between the sub- and super-Hubble modes of inflaton fluctuations, in the context of particle production from perturbations during inflation. We consider a large-field inflationary scenario where inflation is driven by a vacuum energy symmetry breaking potential and the scalar inflaton field is nonminimally coupled to spacetime curvature. In particular, we focus on the slow-roll phase, adopting a quasi-de Sitter scale factor to properly account for the presence of perturbations and computing the pair production probability associated to the coupling between the inflaton and spacetime inhomogeneities. The interaction Lagrangian at first order is constructed from inhomogeneities induced by the inflaton dynamics, and the initial Bunch-Davies vacuum state of the field evolves under the action of such Lagrangian. In this framework, we quantify the total amount of entanglement via the von Neumann entropy of the reduced density operator for superhorizon modes, tracing out sub-Hubble degrees of freedom. We then compare these outcomes with entanglement production for quadratic chaotic inflation and for a small-field quadratic hilltop scenario, preserving field-curvature coupling in both cases and pointing out the main differences between large and small-field approaches. We show that the amount of entanglement entropy arising from such geometric production grows rapidly in slow-roll regime and that it is typically higher in large-field scenarios. We also discuss our outcomes in light of recent findings for the squeezing entropy of cosmological perturbations and cubic nonlinearities in de Sitter space.

Gravitational repulsive effects in 3D regular black holes

In this work, we consider the effects of repulsive gravity in an invariant way for four static 3D regular black holes, using the eigenvalues of the Riemann curvature tensor, the Ricci scalar, and the strong energy conditions. The eigenvalues of the solutions are non-vanishing asymptotically (in asymptotically AdS) and increase as the source of gravity is approached, providing a radius at which the passage from attractive to repulsive gravity might occur. We compute the onsets and the regions of repulsive gravity and conclude that the regular behavior of the solutions at the origin of coordinates can be interpreted as due to the presence of repulsive gravity, which also turns out to be related with the violation of the strong energy condition. We showed that in all of the solutions for the allowed region of parameters, gravity changes its sign, but the repulsive regions only for the non-logarithmic solution are affected by the mass that generates the regular black hole. The repulsive regions for the logarithmic solutions are dependent on electric charge and the AdS$_{3}$ length. The implications and physical consequences of these results are discussed in detail.

Breaking the baryon-dark matter degeneracy in a model-independent way through the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect

We propose a model-independent \textit{Bézier parametric interpolation} to alleviate the degeneracy between baryonic and dark matter abundances by means of intermediate-redshift data. To do so, we first interpolate the observational Hubble data to extract cosmic bounds over the (reduced) Hubble constant, $h_0$, and interpolate the angular diameter distances, $D(z)$, of the galaxy clusters, inferred from the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect, constraining the spatial curvature, $Ω_k$. Through the so-determined Hubble points and $D(z)$, we interpolate uncorrelated data of baryonic acoustic oscillations bounding the baryon ($ω_b = h^2_0Ω_b$) and total matter ($ω_m = h^2_0Ω_m$) densities, reinforcing the constraints on $h_0$ and $Ω_k$ with the same technique. Instead of pursuing the usual treatment to fix $ω_b$ via the value obtained from the cosmic microwave background to remove the matter sector degeneracy, we here interpolate the acoustic parameter from correlated baryonic acoustic oscillations. The results of our Monte Carlo--Markov chain simulations turn out to agree at $1$--$σ$ confidence level with the flat $Λ$CDM model. While our findings are roughly suitable at $1$--$σ$ with its non-flat extension too, the Hubble constant appears in tension up to the $2$--$σ$ confidence level. Accordingly, we also reanalyze the Hubble tension with our treatment and find our expectations slightly match local constraints.

Quasi-quintessence inflation with non-minimal coupling to curvature in the Jordan and Einstein frames

We here explore a specific class of scalar field, dubbed quasi-quintessence which exhibits characteristics akin to ordinary matter. Specifically, we investigate under which conditions this fluid can mitigate the classical cosmological constant problem. We remark that, assuming a phase transition, it is possible to predict inflationary dynamics within the metastable phase triggered by the symmetry breaking mechanism. During this phase, we study inflationary models incorporating this cancellation mechanism for vacuum energy within the context of quasi-quintessence. There, we introduce four novel potentials, categorized into two main groups, \emph{i.e.}, the Starobinsky-like and symmetry breaking paradigms. Afterwards, we consider two distinct cases, the first without coupling with the curvature, while the second exhibiting a Yukawa-like interacting term. Hence, we compute the inflationary dynamics within both the Jordan and Einstein frames and discuss the objective to unify old with chaotic inflation into a single scheme. We therefore find the tensor-to-scalar ratio and the spectral terms and conclude that the most suited approach involves the Starobinsky-like class of solution. Indeed, our findings show that small field inflationary scenarios appear disfavored and propose \emph{de facto} a novel technique to reobtain the Starobinsky potential without passing through generalizations of Einstein's gravity. Last but not least, we conjecture that vacuum energy may be converted into particles by virtue of the geometric interacting term and speculate about the physics associated with the Jordan and Einstein frames.

Dark energy-matter equivalence by the evolution of cosmic equation of state

We consider a model-independent approach to constrain the equivalence redshift, $z_{eq}$, at which dark energy and the total matter (cold dark matter and baryonic) equate their magnitudes. To this aim, in the context of a homogeneous and isotropic universe, we first consider a generic model where the dark energy contribution is provided by an unknown function of barotropic fluids. Afterwards, we compute the deceleration and jerk parameters, evaluating at our epoch, namely $z=0$, and at $z=z_{eq}$. Thus, by Taylor expanding around current time the Hubble rate, luminosity and angular distances, we substitute the theoretical expressions obtained from the aforementioned generic dark energy model, defining a correspondence between quantities evaluated at $z=0$ and $z=z_{eq}$. In so doing, we directly fit these quantities by means of current data sets, involving the most recent Pantheon type Ia supernovae, baryonic acoustic oscillation and Hubble rate points. We consider two hierarchies in our fitting procedures and compare our findings in the spatially-flat universe first and including spatial curvature, later. We assess constraints on the overall equation of state of the universe and its first derivative. We compare our results with those predicted by the standard $Λ$CDM paradigm. Specifically, our findings are in agreement at the 2$σ$ confidence level, assuming a constant dark energy term. However, our analysis does not rule out the possibility of a slight evolution of dark energy, indicating a small deviation from the scenario of a pure cosmological constant. In particular, the possible departures appear consistent with a phenomenological $ω$CDM model, rather than more complicated dark energy parameterizations.

Unifying the dark sector through a single matter fluid with non-zero pressure

We explore a generalised unified dark energy model that incorporates a non-minimal interaction between a tachyonic fluid and an additional scalar field. Specifically, we require that the second field possesses a vacuum energy, introducing an ineliminable offset due to a symmetry-breaking mechanism. After the transition (occurring as due to the symmetry-breaking mechanism of the second field), the corresponding equation of state (EoS) takes the form of a combination between a generalised Chaplygin gas (GCG) component and a cosmological constant contribution. We reinterpret this outcome by drawing parallels to the so-called Murnaghan EoS, widely-employed in the realm of solid-state physics to characterise fluids that, under external pressure, counteract the pressure's effect. We examine the dynamic behaviour of this model and highlight its key distinctions compared to the GCG model. We establish parameter bounds that clarifies the model's evolution across cosmic expansion history, showing that it, precisely, exhibits behaviour akin to a logotropic fluid that eventually converges to the $Λ$CDM model in the early universe, while behaving as a logotropic or Chaplygin gas at intermediate and late times respectively. We explain our findings from a thermodynamic perspective, and determine the small perturbations in the linear regime. At very early times, the growth factor flattens as expected while the main departures occur at late times, where the Murnagham EoS results in a more efficient growth of perturbations. We discuss this deviation in view of current observations and conclude that our model is a suitable alternative to the standard cosmological paradigm, introducing the concept of a matter-like field with non-zero pressure.

Luminosity of accretion disks around rotating regular black holes

We consider thin accretion disks in the field of a class of rotating regular black holes. For this purpose, we obtain the radius of the innermost stable circular orbit, $r_{ISCO}$ and efficiency of accretion disk in converting matter into radiation $η$ with the aim of modeling the disk's emission spectrum. We consider a simple model for the disk's radiative flux, differential and spectral luminosity and compare the results with those expected from accretion disks around Kerr black holes. As a remarkable result, from our computations we find that both the luminosity of the accretion disk and the efficiency are larger in the geometry of rotating regular black holes for fixed and small values of the spin parameter $j$ with respect to those predicted with the Kerr metric for a black hole of the same mass. These results may have interesting implications for astrophysical black holes.

Constraints on the transition redshift from the calibrated Gamma-ray Burst $E_{\rm p}$-$E_{\rm iso}$ correlation

We constrain the deceleration-acceleration epoch, namely the transition redshift $z_{tr}$, adopting model-independent techniques that utilize a calibrated $E_{\rm p}$-$E_{\rm iso}$ correlation for gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). To do so, in addition to real data points, we employ up to $1000$ simulated observational Hubble data (OHD) points. We then calibrate the $E_{\rm p}$-$E_{\rm iso}$ correlation by means of the well-consolidate Bézier polynomial technique, interpolating OHD up to the second order. Once GRB data have been calibrated, we consider two strategies of cosmographic expansions, i.e., first we take a direct Hubble rate expansion around $z_{tr}$, and second the expansion of the deceleration parameter around the same redshift, but with a different order. Employing type Ia supernovae, baryonic acoustic oscillations and GRB data sets, from Monte Carlo analyses we infer tight constraints on $z_{tr}$ and the jerk parameters at $z=z_{tr}$, namely $j_{tr}$. Our results are extremely compatible with previous outcomes and confirm the $Λ$CDM predictions, being slightly different in terms of the jerk parameter. In this respect, we conjecture which extensions of the concordance paradigm are possible and we compare our findings with expectations provided by generic dark energy models.

Accretion disk in the Hartle-Thorne spacetime

We consider the circular motion of test particles in the gravitational field of a rotating deformed object described by the Hartle-Thorne metric. This metric represents an approximate solution to the vacuum Einstein field equations, accurate to second order in the angular momentum $J$ and to first order in the mass quadrupole moment $Q$. We calculate the orbital parameters of neutral test particles on circular orbits (in accretion disks) such as angular velocity, $Ω$, total energy, $E$, angular momentum, $L$, and radius of the innermost stable circular orbit, $R_{ISCO}$, as functions of the total mass, $M$, spin parameter, $j=J/M^2$ and quadrupole parameter, $q=Q/M^3$, of the source. We use the Novikov-Thorne-Page thin accretion disk model to investigate the characteristics of the disk. In particular, we analyze in detail the radiative flux, differential luminosity, and spectral luminosity of the accretion disk, which are the quantities that can be measured experimentally. We compare our results with those obtained in the literature for the Schwarzschild and Kerr metrics, and the $q$-metric. It turns out that the Hartle-Thorne metric and the Kerr metric lead to similar results for the predicted flux and the differential and spectral luminosities, whereas the q-metric predicts different values. We compare the predicted values of $M$, $j$, and $q$ with those of realistic neutron star models. Furthermore, we compare the values of $R_{ISCO}$ with the static and rotating radii of neutron stars.

Entanglement area law violation from field-curvature coupling

We investigate the entanglement entropy of a massive scalar field nonminimally coupled to spacetime curvature, assuming a static, spherically symmetric background. We discretize the field Hamiltonian by introducing a lattice of spherical shells and imposing a cutoff in the radial direction. We then study the ground state of the field and quantify deviations from area law due to nonminimal coupling, focusing in particular on Schwarzschild-de Sitter and Hayward spacetimes, also discussing de Sitter spacetime as a limiting case. We show that large positive coupling constants can significantly alter the entropy scaling with respect to the boundary area, even in case of small field mass. Our outcomes are interpreted in view of black hole entropy production and early universe scenarios.

Inflationary entanglement

We investigate the entanglement due to geometric corrections in particle creation during inflation. To do so, we propose a single-field inflationary scenario, nonminimally coupled to the scalar curvature of spacetime. We require particle production to be purely geometric, setting to zero the Bogolubov coefficients and computing the $S$ matrix associated to spacetime perturbations, which are traced back to inflaton fluctuations. The corresponding particle density leads to a nonzero entanglement entropy whose effects are investigated at primordial time of Universe evolution. The possibility of modeling our particle candidate in terms of dark matter is discussed. The classical back-reaction of inhomogeneities on the homogeneous dynamical background degrees of freedom is also studied and quantified in the slow-roll regime.

Geometrothermodynamic cosmology

We review the main aspects of geometrothermodynamics, a formalism that uses contact geometry and Riemannian geometry to describe the properties of thermodynamic systems. We show how to handle in a geometric way the invariance of classical thermodynamics with respect to Legendre transformations, which means that the properties of the systems do not depend on the choice of the thermodynamic potential. Moreover, we show that in geometrothermodynamics it is possible to apply a variational principle to generate thermodynamic fundamental equations, which can be used in the context of relativistic cosmology to generate cosmological models. As a particular example, we consider a fundamental equation that relates the entropy with the internal energy and the volume of the Universe, and construct cosmological models with arbitrary parameters, which can be fixed to reproduce the main aspects of the inflationary era and the standard cosmological paradigm.
