Five-Dimensional Beam Sigma Matrix Determination in Transport Lines with Differentiable Simulation

Precise measurement of the beam sigma matrix is essential for matching the optics in transport lines and ensuring reliable accelerator operation. In this work, we present a method for measuring and reconstructing the non-temporal five-dimensional beam sigma matrix using quadrupole scans performed in a dispersive transport region. The proposed approach enables characterization of the beam moments using only quadrupoles and beam transverse profile diagnostics, without requiring longitudinal diagnostics or a dedicated beamline section. To achieve robust and computationally efficient reconstruction, we formulate the problem within a differentiable simulation framework, allowing direct gradient-based optimization of the initial beam covariance matrix. We demonstrate the method experimentally in the Booster-to-Storage-ring (BTS) transport line at the Advanced Photon Source (APS), where it produces consistent reconstructions of the beam sigma matrix from measurements. We further show that the framework is flexible with respect to the number and placement of diagnostic screens, making it applicable to a broad range of existing transport-line configurations. These results establish the proposed 5D beam sigma matrix reconstruction method as a practical and broadly deployable approach for fast, efficient beam characterization during accelerator operation.

A Field-Enhanced Conduction-Cooled Superconducting Cavity for High-Repetition-Rate Ultrafast Electron Bunch Generation

High-repetition-rate sources of bright electron bunches have a wide range of applications. They can directly be employed as probes in electron-scattering setups, or serve as a backbone for the generation of radiation over a broad range of the electromagnetic spectrum. This paper describes the development of a compact sub-Mega-electronvolt (sub-MeV) electron-source setup capable of operating at MHz repetition rates and forming sub-picosecond electron bunches with transverse emittance below 20~nm. The setup relies on a conduction-cooled superconducting single-cell resonator with its geometry altered to enhance the field at the surface of the emitter. The system is designed to accommodate cooling using a model a $2$~W at 4.2 K pulse tube cryogen-free cryocooler. Although we focus on the case of a photoemitted electron bunch, the scheme could be adapted to other emission mechanisms.

Effect of heat treatment on the structural and microstructural properties of the Co2-Y hexaferrites

The effect of heat treatment on the structural and micro-structural properties of the Co2-Y (Ba2Co2Fe12O22) was investigated by means of X-ray diffraction and the Rietveld refinement. The samples were synthesized using high-energy ball milling technique. Phase identification and Rietveld refinement of the samples confirmed the presence of a single Y-type phase that is consistent with reported patterns. Analysis of the lattice constants obtained using the Rietveld refinement confirmed the presence of inner distortion, which was responsible for increasing the lattice constants. However, after the heat treatment, the lattice constants were in good agreement with the reported pattern. The structural analysis using quadratic elongation revealed distortions in the crystal structure. The structural analysis revealed some differences in the cation-anion distances in some sites, while in other sites, these distances remained the same. The use of the Rietveld refinement to obtain micro-structural information about the size and the strain was reported. Heat treatment induced diffusion between crystal domains leading to an increase in crystallite size.
